Joey Slaton (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 4-10.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Slaton scored a reversal with seven seconds left in the second period and then rode Fanthorpe for more than a minute in the third period to pick up a decisive riding-time point. Slaton handed Fanthorpe his first loss of the season.
Slaton, a sophomore transfer from Virginia Tech, is off to a 5-0 start this season. Slaton was one of four transfers from Virginia Tech to notch a victory for Iowa in the win over Iowa State. Transfers Dan LeClere (141), Brett Metcalf (149) and Jay Borschel (174) also picked up wins for the Hawkeyes.
Slaton was a two-time Iowa state high school champion for Cedar Rapids Kennedy. He placed second at Senior Nationals.
Slaton redshirted at Virginia Tech during the 2005-06 season before transferring to Iowa when Coach Tom Brands left Virginia Tech to take over the program at Iowa.
Slaton compiled an 18-4 record while competing unattached during the 2006-07 season after coming to Iowa.

Schwab Named Iowa's Interim Assistant Coach
IOWA CITY, IA -- Three-time all-American and former Hawkeye wrestler Doug Schwab has been named interim assistant wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. Schwab replaces Assistant Coach Dan Gable, who returned to his role as special assistant to the director of athletics earlier this month.
"We got the best young coach in the country whose role will now expand into off campus recruiting," said Head Coach Tom Brands. "He has been very valuable to the structure of this program. He kows how to make our student-athletes better people and better wrestlers."
Schwab served as Iowa's volunteer assistant coach last season and spent two seasons (2005-06) as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech University under Brands. During his tenure with the Hokies, the team won the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record five wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Virginia Tech also had five conference champions and two all-Americans, and senior heavyweight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year.
The Osage, IA, native was a three-time all-American and Big Ten champion for the Hawkeyes, lettering from 1998-2001. He won the 1999 NCAA title at 141 pounds and finished his collegiate career with 130 wins, which ranks 10th-best in school history.
Schwab has remained active in international competition. He won the 2007 U.S. Senior Freestyle title, earned a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and placed fifth at the 2007 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Schwab's other post-college national wrestling accomplishments include winning the 145.5-pound title at the 2003 Sunkist Kids International Open and earning Outstanding Wrestler honors in the freestyle event. In 2005, Schwab won the 145-pound division of Real Pro Wrestling, earning Outstanding Wrestler honors as part of the champion Iowa Stalkers team.
Schwab was born August 3, 1977. He earned a B.S. in communication studies from the University of Iowa in 2001, and is working toward a master's degree in kinesiology/sport management.
2007-08 Iowa Season Preview
Two things the University of Iowa wrestling team has strived for the past 35 years have been success and domination. Head Coach Tom Brands epitomized those characteristics as a Hawkeye wrestler. Brands and his staff plan to bring a youthful, but talented and deep, squad along to achieve success both individually and as a team in 2007-08.
Iowa returns one NCAA and Big Ten champion, three all-Americans and six NCAA qualifiers from the 2006-07 squad that went 14-5 in dual competition and placed third at the Big Ten and eighth at the NCAA Championships. Brands needs veteran leadership and sparks from new faces to improve numbers in all statistical categories.
Defending national and Big Ten 165-pound champion Mark Perry (Stillwater, OK) returns for his final season with the Hawkeyes. The three-time all-American ended the 2006-07 season on a 12-match winning streak. Perry wants to add to his 76-13 collegiate career mark. He led the Hawkeyes in pins the last three seasons, and scored the most dual meet team points the last two years.
All-Americans Alex Tsirtsis (Griffith, IN) and Charlie Falck (Strawberry Point, IA) also return. Both have had flashes of greatness, tempered by inconsistency. Brands and his staff need the pair to be reliable contributors the entire season. Tsirtsis, a senior at 141 pounds, has been a mainstay in the Iowa lineup since his true freshman year and earned all-America honors as a sophomore. Falck, a junior at 125 pounds, earned all-America honors last season. NCAA qualifiers Matt Fields (senior-heavyweight), Ryan Morningstar (sophomore-157) and Phillip Keddy (sophomore-184) also return.
The Hawkeyes will get a boost from a talented group of newcomers, including the five wrestlers who transferred from Virginia Tech when Brands left the head coaching position there for Iowa. All five transfers were forced to sit out the 2006-07 season after redshirting their freshman year at Virginia Tech. To say they are eager to start the season is an understatement. Sophomores Brent Metcalf (149), Jay Borschel (174), Joe Slaton (133), Dan LeClere (141) and T.H. Leet (165) comprise the transfer group, and will each be fighting for spots in the lineup. Metcalf, Borschel and LeClere were four-time high school state champions.
Brands anticipates Iowa’s 12 true freshmen will provide much-needed depth in the practice room. The group brings nine state titles to the mat and has a representative at nine of the 10 weight classes.
Iowa will send competitors to the Iowa Central Open (Nov. 10) and the Kaufman-Brand Open (Nov. 17) before opening the dual season against North Carolina State, Iowa Central, Findlay and Old Dominion at the St. Edward Duals in Lakewood, OH, on Nov. 24. The Hawkeyes host seven home duals at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Northern Iowa and Cornell College (Dec. 13), Oklahoma State (Jan. 5), Penn State (Jan. 20), Northwestern (Jan. 27), Indiana (Feb. 15) and Michigan (Feb. 17). The Hawkeyes will face intra-state rival Iowa State Dec. 9 in Ames, and will compete at the N.W.C.A./Cliff Keen National Duals Jan. 12-13 in Cedar Falls. The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for Mar. 8-9 in Minneapolis, and the NCAA meet is set for March 20-22 in St. Louis.
Here is a weight-by-weight look at the 2007-08 Hawkeyes:
125 Pounds
Falck’s 24-10 mark from 2006-07 included a 7-1 Big Ten dual mark and a nine-match winning streak during the dual meet season. He placed second at the Big Ten meet and eighth at nationals. This will be his third year in the lineup at 125. True freshman J.J. Krutsinger (Evansdale, IA) brings a prep career record of 124-11, including a 44-0 mark and state title his junior year. The three-time state finalist also won two conference titles. True freshman Tyler Halverson (Cherokee, IA) could wrestle 125 or 133. Halverson boasts a prep career record of 166-16 with one state and four conference titles.
133 Pounds
It will be a battle to replace two-time NCAA qualifier Mario Galanakis. Sophomores Daniel Dennis (Ingleside, IL) and Joe Slaton (Cedar Rapids, IA), and true freshman Montel Marion (Des Moines, IA) are the front runners. Dennis redshirted last season after posting a 20-18 mark at 133 his freshman season. He went 13-2 while competing unattached last season. Slaton won two high school state titles and posted an unattached mark of 18-4 at 133 and 141 last season. Marion was a two-time state champion and four-time state finalist with a prep record of 151-7 and 62 career pins. Sophomore Thomas Magnani (Long Island, NY) and Halverson will provide depth.
141 Pounds
Tsirtsis brings three years of lineup experience and a 69-32 career mark. He will be pushed by sophomore Dan LeClere (Coggon, IA), who was a four-time state champion at North-Linn High School. LeClere went 13-4 while competing unattached last season. He and his younger brother, Nick, who is a true freshman with the Hawkeyes, are the 35th set of brothers to compete for the Iowa wrestling team. Sophomore Derek Coorough (Hillsboro, WI) and freshman Ethan Sebert (Clarion, IA) will also be at this weight.
149 Pounds
Metcalf leads the charge to replace the graduated Alex Grunder. The four-time state champion from Davison, MI, posted an unblemished 228-0 prep record with 156 pins and brings a high school honors list a mile long. He went 14-0 while wrestling unattached last season, winning titles at the Kaufman-Brand, Northern Iowa and Glen Brand Opens. True freshman Stewart Gillmor (Donahue, IA) will provide depth, while redshirt freshman Matt Ballweg (Waverly, IA) and true freshman Nick LeClere (Coggon, IA) could compete here or at 157.
157 Pounds
Sophomore Ryan Morningstar went 26-12 here last season, placing fifth at the Big Ten meet and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. He showed signs of excellence, like his early season 3-2 upset over top-ranked Trent Paulson of Iowa State and his 6-2 record in Big Ten dual competition. Brands and his staff hope another year of experience and his title at the University Nationals over the summer will spur the Lisbon, IA, native to more consistent performances. Ballweg and Nick LeClere will provide backup talent, as will redshirt freshmen Nick Kolegraff (Milford, IA) and Brooks Kopsa (Gilman, IA).
165 Pounds
Perry returns for his senior season at Iowa. Iowa’s first conference and national individual champion since Cliff Moore in 2004, Perry has a shot to be Iowa’s 16th four-time all-American. Former Hawkeye Eric Juergens was the last to join the elite group in 2001. With 25 career pins, Perry needs 15 to break into Iowa’s all-time career top 10 in that category. Junior Mike Fahrer (New London, IA), sophomore T.H. Leet (Atlanta, GA), redshirt freshmen Aaron Janssen (Emmetsberg, IA) and Jake Kerr (Oskaloosa, IA) and true freshmen Ryan Kurovski (Belle Plaine, IA) and Weston Marling (Cedar Rapids, IA) will also compete. Kerr represented the United States last summer at the FILA Junior World Championships in Beijing, China.
174 Pounds
Replacing two-time all-American Eric Luedke will not be an easy task. He was a steady performer last year, going 33-4 in collegiate matches, 16-1 in duals and 7-1 in Big Ten duals. The sophomore trio of Chad Beatty (Wilton, IA), Jay Borschel (Marion, IA) and Rick Loera (Park Ridge, IL) will fight for the spot. Beatty was a two-time state champion with a career prep mark of 109-7. He went 7-1 while wrestling unattached as a true freshman and 4-2 last season. Borschel was a four-time state champion with a 163-1 career record. He posted a 28-5 unattached record at Virginia Tech his true freshman year and went 13-3, unattached, last season. Loera, who wrestled at 184 and 197 last year filling in for injured Hawkeye Dan Erekson, could compete here or at 184.
184 Pounds
Sophomore Phillip Keddy (Vernal, UT) posted a 14-16 mark, placed seventh at the Big Ten meet and qualified for the NCAA Championships last season. Loera, sophomore Luke Lofthouse (Avon, UT) and true freshmen Brodie Ambrose (Long Grove, IA) and Vinnie Wagner (Osage, IA) could challenge for mat time. Lofthouse just returned from a two-year Mormon mission to Africa. He posted an 8-17 mark for the Hawkeyes at 174 as a true freshman in 2004-05.
197 Pounds
The biggest question mark in the Iowa lineup is here. Junior two-year starter Dan Erekson (Eagle, ID) is listed here and at heavyweight. Erekson was injured for the entire Big Ten dual schedule last season, and went 16-19 as a true freshman. Junior Jordan McLaughlin (Belmond, IA), who is a fullback on the Hawkeye football team, is also listed here and heavyweight, but will not be able to compete until after Iowa’s football season is complete. Lofthouse could compete here. Also listed is junior transfer Derrick Mehmen (Denver, IA), who earned NJCAA all-America honors at Ellsworth Community College last season.

Iowa Wrestling Legends Selected for Hall of Fame
WATERLOO--Six new legends of wrestling will enter the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame on April 19, 2008. It will be the seventh class to go into the hall.
The group includes two men who each won a pair of NCAA championships (Mike Natvig of Army by way of Decorah and Tim Krieger of Iowa State), another NCAA champion who became a mixed martial arts star (Mike Van Arsdale of Iowa State), an NCAA champion who is now a Big Ten coach (Duane Goldman of Iowa) and two of the most respected coaches in Iowa history (Chuck Patten and Dan Mashek, both of UNI).
The inductions will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, in the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame inside the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo. It is part of a two-day weekend that includes the Dan Gable Coaching Clinic on Friday and Saturday, with some of the top coaches in the country holding sessions.
Mike Natvig won two NCAA championships for the West Point team, capturing titles at 147 pounds in both 1962 and Œ63. He graduated with an overall record of 47-7-1 and is considered the most successful wrestler in the history of West Point. He also attended the University of Iowa prior to attending West Point.
Though never a state champion in high school, Natvig was a star at Decorah High School, placing second in the 1958 state meet at 138 pounds. He retired from the Army in 1991 as a lieutenant colonel and today lives in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
Chuck Patten was the head coach at the University of Northern Iowa for 18 years, compiling a record of 217-87-8 and winning two Division II NCAA team titles. Along the way, he produced 16 national champions and 58 wrestlers who won All-American honors.
Patten wrestled at East Waterloo High School, placing fourth in the 1955 state meet, and for Bill Koll at UNI. He was president of both the Division I and Division II coaches associations and was chair of the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee from 1974-1978, the only Division II coach to receive this honor. He also served as a color commentator for Iowa Public Television broadcasts from 1983 to 1986. Today, he lives in Everett, Washington.
Dan Mashek did his wrestling at West Waterloo High School (for hall of famer Bob Siddens) and at UNI (for Patten), but earned his greatest fame by far as an Iowa high school coach. In fact, retiring this past season with a record of 519-105-5, he has the most dual meet wins of any coach in Iowa history. He started the program at Don Bosco of Gilbertville in 1970 and quickly made the Dons a perennial power. While there, he claimed four traditional team titles and one dual team title. He saw 20 of his wrestlers win a total of 24 individual state titles. He began coaching at North Scott in 2000 and compiled a record of 93-30. He currently lives in Eldridge.
Tim Kreiger was a three-time state champion at Mason City High School who became a four-time All-American at Iowa State University. He claimed two NCAA titles, in 1987 and ‚89, and won four Big Eight championships at 150 pounds. He was also second in 1988 and fifth in 1986 at the NCAA tournament. His overall record of 116-3-2 is one of the best in the history of Iowa colleges. He lives in Minneapolis, where he works in the financial industry.
Duane Goldman was a four-time Big Ten champion and four-time NCAA finalist at the University of Iowa, winning the 190-pound NCAA title in 1986. His overall record of 132-10 ranks tenth on the all-time Hawkeye career win percentage. A two-time state champion in Colorado, Goldman was an assistant coach under Joe McFarland at Indiana University before being named the head coach in 1992. His 2005 Hoosier team placed ninth in the NCAA race, his highest finish as head coach.
Mike Van Arsdale placed sixth, third and first at the NCAA meet while wearing the cardinal and gold for Iowa State. His individual title came at 167 pounds in 1988. He made several international freestyle teams and won a gold medal at the 1997 World Cup. He also posted a victory over a young Cyclone star named Cael Sanderson in the 2000 Olympic trials in Dallas.
A graduate of West Waterloo High School, he was state champion in 1982. Van Arsdale has earned fame as a mixed martial artist and today runs a kids wrestling program in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

University of Iowa Wrestling: Brands Announces Change In Gable's Title
IOWA CITY -- University of Iowa Assistant Wrestling Coach Dan Gable has decided to step down from that position. The announcement came today from Head Wrestling Coach Tom Brands.
Brands said Gable will remain fully engaged in the day-to-day operations of Iowa's wrestling program, but without the title or on-the-mat responsibilities that come with the title of assistant coach.
"Dan has been my coach and my mentor. What's important to me is that he's going to remain involved in the Hawkeye wrestling program and will continue to play a significant role as we continue to make progress toward the goal of domination," said Brands.
"My assistant coach's role was always temporary and I'm not going anywhere. I'll be directly involved in our wrestling program as much as NCAA rules allow me to be," said Gable.
Gable, arguably the state of Iowa's most successful student-athlete and coach and the architect of one of college athletics' longest running dynasties, will return to his role as special assistant to the director of athletics effective Oct. 1. Another full-time coach will be added to the wrestling staff.
"I'm very excited for everyone who loves the sport of wrestling and cares about wrestling at the University of Iowa and worldwide. I feel good about the direction of our program and the leadership and the young men who are involved in our program," he continued.
"What isn't temporary, and what will never be temporary, is the respect and appreciation I have for Tom, his drive and determination, and the love he has for wrestling. We're in very, very good hands and there is absolutely no doubt that we're headed in the right direction."
"The wrestling team is very lucky to have two great coaching minds like Coaches Brands and Gable available every day to help make us better," said senior Mark Perry, the defending Big Ten Conference and NCAA champion at 165 pounds.
"I look forward to working with both of them again this year in helping our team win championships." Perry added.
Brands said he has no timetable for the hiring of a full-time assistant coach.
"I have great guys around me including Coach Gable. They are all totally committed. At some point down the road, we'll get the position filled with someone who shares my commitment to developing young student-athletes to win championships," said Brands.
University of Iowa's Schwab, Zadick Earn Spots On World Team
IOWA CITY, IA -- University of Iowa assistant wrestling coaches Doug Schwab and Mike Zadick have earned spots on the 2007 United States World Freestyle Team. Schwab is the Hawkeye Volunteer Assistant Coach and Zadick is the Strength Training Coach.
Both won titles at the Senior Freestyle World Team Trials in Las Vegas, NV, in June, but Zadick had to post a win over 2007 U.S. National Champion Nate Gallick in a special best-of-three wrestle-off earlier today in Colorado Springs, CO, to earn the spot.
Zadick, who won a silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last month, defeated Gallick in two straight matches. He won the first match 0-1, 1-0, 4-2 and the second match 1-0, 0-1, 3-0. Gallick received special permission for the wrestle-off because he could not compete in the team trials earlier this summer due to injury.
At the world team trials, Schwab was the No. 6 seed at 66 kg entering the tournament, while Zadick was the top seed at 60 kg. Schwab upset the top three seeds during the challenge tournament on June 10, and beat defending U.S. National freestyle champion Chris Bono in the finals. Schwab was named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for his performance. Zadick beat Zach Roberson of Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club in the finals.
Schwab and Zadick, who are both competing for Gator Wrestling Club, are scheduled to compete at the World Championships, September 17-23 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Two Former Iowa Wrestling Greats to Enter Hall of Fame
NEWTON Former University of Iowa wrestling standouts Simon Roberts and Sherwyn Thorson are among seven men who will be inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa, class of 2007. The inductions will be held April 14 in Waterloo.
This will be the sixth class of individuals inducted in the hall of fame. The hall of fame honors those individuals who have achieved greatness in the sport of wrestling and competed in the state of Iowa during their careers.
At the 1956 NCAA tournament Simon Roberts broke new ground in the college wrestling world. As a junior, competing at the 147-pound weight class, the former Hawkeye became the first black wrestler to ever win an NCAA title. Entering the tournament seeded sixth, Roberts upset the second and fourth seeded wrestlers on his way to a hard-fought championship victory.
A native of Davenport, Roberts was also the first black wrestler to win an individual state title in Iowa. He was a state champion in 1954 at 133 pounds. He is retired from a long career in education and lives in Los Angeles.
Sherwyn Thorson was a two-time All-American wrestler, winning the NCAA title in 1962 at heavyweight after finishing runner-up in 1960. He opted not to wrestle the 1961 season as he spent considerable time in the weight room, working to improve his football skills. He was a three-year regular on the Hawkeye football team who went on to a ten-year career in the Canadian football league. He is a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Hall of Fame.
The wrestling museum will be moving from Newton to Waterloo later this year. In addition to the move, the facility will be renamed the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute & Museum. The wrestling museum expects to be up and running by early January of 2007.
The class of 2007 will be the first induction ceremony held at the new building located at 303 Jefferson Street. Festivities will take place on April 13-14, 2007.
In addition to the hall of fame inductions on Saturday, April 14, Championship Productions will be hosting their fourth annual Coaches' Clinic in conjunction with the wrestling museum during the weekend. The clinic is being held one block away from the museum at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.
For more information on the event you can call the museum at (641) 791-1517

Iowa Wrestling Lose at Oklahoma State, 21-11
STILLWATER, OK -- The Iowa wrestling team fell to 9-2 on the season with a 21-11 loss at Oklahoma State Friday night in Stillwater, OK. The Cowboys improved to 10-3 on the season with the win, and extended their winning streak in the series to eight matches. It was also Iowa's second loss to Oklahoma State in seven days, as the Cowboys scored a 22-13 win on January 13 at the N.W.C.A./Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, IA.
The Hawkeyes jumped out to a solid start behind decisions from sophomore Charlie Falck (125) and senior Alex Grunder (149), as both avenged last week's losses to their respective Cowboy opponents. Falck narrowly missed a major decision wit ha 9-2 win over redshirt freshman Tyler Shinn in the opening match, and Grunder defeated freshman Dakotah Simpson, 5-2. Oklahoma State picked up decisions at 133 and 141, making the team score 6-6 after the first four matches. That score put Iowa in a much better position than the 15-0 deficit they were in at the same point the previous week.

Hawkeye senior Eric Luedke scored a last second reversal to defeat Brandon Mason, 2-1 at 174, making the team score 12-9 in Oklahoma State's favor. Luedke improved to 18-1 in collegiate matches and 9-0 in dual competition with the win. He is currently on a 16-match winning streak.
But Iowa could not keep the momentum as Cowboy Jack Jensen scored a 3-2 decision over redshirt freshman Phillip Keddy at 184 and a team point was deducted from Iowa for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving Oklahoma State a 15-8 lead. Hawkeye sophomore 197-pounder Dan Erekson suffered a separated shoulder in his match with Jared Shelton and was forced to injury default, putting the team win out of reach for Iowa. Hawkeye junior Matt Fields ended the dual with a 6-4 decision in sudden victory over Jared Rosholt at heavyweight.
Iowa (9-2) will open the 2007 Big Ten season Sunday against Northwestern (10-4, 0-1 Big Ten) at Rolling Meadows High School in Rolling Meadows, IL. Start time for the dual is 2 p.m. (CT).

Ryan Morningstar Named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week
Ryan Morningstar (Lisbon, Iowa/University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 28-Dec. 4.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

University of Iowa Wrestlers Hold Annual Media Day
SEASON OPENER
Iowa will open the 2006-07 wrestling season Saturday at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, NE. Competition starts at 9 a.m. at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus. A total of 42 teams are
expected and approximately 650 wrestlers will compete in the meet. It's easily the country's largest single-day collegiate meet. The tournament will be wrestled in two divisons - an open division and 20 & under division.
2006 NWCA ALL-STAR CLASSIC
Junior Mark Perry will represent the Hawkeyes at the 41st annual NWCA All-Star Dual presented by the
United States Marine Corps. The dual will be held
Monday, November 20 at the Dallas Convention Center and Arena in Dallas, TX. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Perry, who is ranked second in the country, will face top-ranked Johny Hendricks of Oklahoma State at 165 pounds. Hendricks is a two-time NCAA champion and three-time all-American for the Cowboys. Perry is 0-3 against him, losing a 7-5 decision in sudden victory at the 2004 Kaufman-Brand Open, a 3-1 decision in the 2005 Iowa-Oklahoma State dual and a 5-2
decision in the 2005 NCAA Championship finals. The two did not meet last season because Perry wrestled at 174 pounds.
2006-07 SEASON PREVIEW
First-year Head Coach Tom Brands and his staff, which includes former Iowa skipper Dan Gable and former Hawkeye wrestlers Wes Hand, Doug Schwab and Mike Zadick hope to guide the 2006-07 Hawkeyes back to the
domination experienced in the 1980's and
90's.
Brands and the new staff will have ample bodies, and talent, to work with. The Hawkeyes return three all-Americans in senior Eric Luedke (174) and juniors Alex Tsirtsis (141) and Mark Perry (165), and an NCAA qualifier at six weights. The 2006-07 team has strong depth in the lower and middle weights.
A large group of newcomers will provide immediate depth. Joining Brands from Virginia Tech are transfers Joe Slaton (133), Dan
LeClere (141), Brent Metcalf (149), T.H. Leet (165) and Jay Borschel (174). The five redshirted last season with the Hokies, and are currently appealing a Virginia Tech ruling that prevents them from being eligible this year. If the appeal is lost, all five will have to sit out the 2006-07 season and lose a year of eligibility. If the ruling is overturned, all five would be
available to compete immediately. The group
brings a combined total of 17 state titles, including four-timers Borschel, LeClere and Metcalf. Borschel (Marion), LeClere (Coggon) and Slaton (Cedar Rapids) are all eastern Iowa natives.
Iowa's freshman class includes Matt Ballweg (149-Waverly, IA), Travis Blasco (141, Old Bridge, NJ), Aaron Janssen (157/165-Emmetsburg, IA), Jake Kerr (157-Oskaloosa, IA), Nick Kolegraff (157-Milford, IA), Brooks Kopsa (157-Gilman, IA), Billy Murphy (133-Hughson, CA)
and Dane Wilson (197-Oakland, IA).
