Competitive and Academic All-American re-joins Santoro.
Aug. 13, 2004
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Brad Dillon, an All-American on the mat and in the classroom at Lehigh, has been named as an assistant wrestling coach at the University of Maryland, head coach Pat Santoro announced today. Dillon, who wrestled under Santoro's direction while at Lehigh, joins former Terp Shane Mack on the wrestling coaching staff.
"I am excited for the opportunity to work with Pat," Dillon said. "He was instrumental in my accomplishments and I am familiar with his coaching system and philosophies. I am very confident in my ability to help the student-athletes at Maryland become better wrestlers and well-balanced individuals."
"I am extremely excited to have Brad join our staff," Santoro said. "He is an excellent technician and is committed to the development of our student-athletes on and off the mat. Brad's intensity will have an immediate impact in building our program."
A four-year starter for the Mountain Hawks, Dillon finished fourth at the NCAA Tournament as a senior and fifth as a junior at 174 pounds to earn All-America honors. In addition, he was a two-time team captain and captured a pair Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) titles. He finished his career with over 100 victories and set school records for career dual meet victories (67), season dual meet victories (24) and most takedowns in a season (145).
Off the mat, Dillon was named an Academic All-American and was a recipient of the Lehigh University Scholar Athlete Award as a senior.
Fear the Turtle
The Fear the Turtle campaign is still alive but there may not
be much time. Wrestling currently stands at 8.9 scholarships,
just one scholarship away from being fully funded. Tennis

Maryland
Wrestling Day
From Cornell Bass,
May 10, 2004
The Maryland State Wrestling Association, State Chapter of USA Wrestling, hosted its first annual "Maryland Wrestling Day over the weekend at Oregon Ridge Park in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The purpose of Maryland Wrestling Day is to strengthen the amateur wrestling community in the state by bringing together coaches, officials, wrestlers (past and present), administrators and fans to enrich all state programs in wrestling and celebrate the history of Maryland wrestling. The event replaced the annual MSWA Bullroast, which had been held for 14 years at Michael,s Eight Avenue in Glen Burnie. The reason for the creation of Maryland Wrestling Day is to hosts an event that would permit wrestlers and fans of all ages to attend. The event was well attended with over 300 wrestlers and fans in attendance throughout the day.
The day began with "Hall of Famer Dick Slutzky, former Syracuse wrestler and coach at Aberdeen High School putting on a workshop for high school coaches on "How to build and sustain a High School Program. Slutzky, a former NCAA runner-up, put together points that he used to build Aberdeen High School into a three-time state championship program. His presentation was very well received as the standing room only crowd agreed that the workshop was awesome.
Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a good friend of the MSWA, presented Chairman Haswell Franklin with a proclamation (attached) naming the day "Maryland Wrestling Day. In addressing the attendees, Governor Ehrlich, told the student-athlete of the importance of success in the classroom. He said that victories on the field and mats are great but if you did have the successes in the classroom it would be all for naught. The Governor posed for photos with Chairman Franklin, President of the NWCA-Mike Moyer, Olympic Silver Medallist Lloyd Keaser and others.
This year,s recipient of "The Johnny K. Eareckson Memorial Award was Maryland,s own Olympic Silver Medallist, Lloyd Keaser. The award is presented each year to the individual who has demonstrated those qualities of inspiration and distinguished service to the Maryland wrestling community as exemplified by Hall of Famer, Johnny Eareckson. Ed Peery, another Hall of Famer, who coached Keaser at The U.S. Naval Academy, presented the award to Keaser. Lloyd told those in attendance that of all the awards he has received this award hit him the hardest. He said that all of his previous awards, including The Hall of Fame, he received from his work and victories on the mat. But this is an honor by his friends and colleagues for services in the wrestling community. During his speak, he told of how he broke down in a river of tears on the way to Oregon Ridge thinking of having this honor bestowed upon him.
There were wrestling clinics by Todd Beckerman, Tom Reese and Lloyd Keaser throughout the day. Beckerman, a two-time All-American while at Nebraska and a four-time National Prep Champ while at DeMatha Catholic is now as Assistant Coach at Navy. Tom Reese was an All-American while at The University of Maryland and a Maryland State Champ while at North Carroll High in Hampstead.
The Maryland Wrestling Day Committee of Dennis Shifflett, Bill Filbert, Debbie Franklin, Cornell Bass, Ron Garvin, Keith Watson and Haswell Franklin would like to thank all those who came out to Oregon Ridge to enjoy our day of food, fun, and festivities. We would like to invite you back next year as Keith Watson has secured the commitment of the legendary Dan Gable as our guess clinician.

B-CC, Sonny Nucci, Chad Jeronimo, Eric Jeronimo help end streak
With a split of their two matches, Bethesda-Chevy Chase seniors Sonny Nucci and Eric and Chad Jeronimo helped the Class 4A-3A all-stars capture last Thursday's Haswell M. Franklin Senior All-Star Classic at River Hill High School (Howard County).
The team's 30-18 victory against the Private school all-stars and its 41-20 win over the 2A-1A all-stars ended the private school's three-year championship run.
All three seniors fell in their matches against the Private all-stars but were bailed out by double winners Doug West (Old Mill), Eli Black (Chopticon), Mark Esmont (Thomas Johnson) and Tyler Moyer (Broadneck).
Nucci, a two-time state champion, and Jeronimo brothers, who were state runner-ups this season, bounced back to win their matches against the 2A-1A all-stars. Nucci (135) and Chad Jeronimo (145) captured decisions while Eric Jeronimo (140) was awarded a forfeit victory.
Representing the Private all-stars were Bullis seniors Alan
Schwartzbeck (152), Jay Gorman (160) and Sean Thayer (171). All
three fell against the 4A-3A all-stars while Gorman and Thayer
dropped their matches against the 2A-1A squad. Schwartzbeck didn't
wrestle in that match, which the Private all-stars won 32-23.

Maryland's
40 Toughest Tournaments
Less than one year after the legendary Hammond Invitational died a bureaucratic death, it just didn't seem possible that Maryland could already have a worthy successor.
But it does - and then some.
If one so desired, one could rank the top 50 tournament teams that have, or will, appear in at least one Maryland tournament this season.
Awarding each tourney 50 points for the #1 ranked team (St. Marks, Del), 49 points for the #2 ranked team (MSJ) ... and 1 point for the #50 ranked team and totaling for each tourney produces the below rankings.
Clearly, Mount Mat Madness is far and away the toughest tournament of the year.
And with a score that surpasses even the 2003 Hammond Invitational by almost 70 points, it does not seem unreasonable to conclude that on January 16th and 17th, we'll all be watching the toughest tournament in Maryland wrestling history.

The Washington County wrestling tradition is strong, and the sport continues to grow. they have placed twenty-four individual state champions and approx. ninety place finishers as well as the county teams which have routinely qualified for the Regional duals, state duals, and placed in the state tournament in the past several years.
It's amazing what you can pick up from wrestling.
Take Emily Duckworth for example. Besides new holds, new friends,
the South River High School sophomore is now fluent in two very
distinct languages: Womanese and Manglish.
She was already born expert in the first, and she picked up the second during her two years as the only girl on the boys wrestling team.
Emily wrestles the 112-weight class for South River. shes a hand full of girls who brave the waters in maryland to come out for dominate boy sports. Emily doesnt like to fail the tougher it gets the more she takes in. She just digs in deeper. She doesnt give up.
She recently won all three of her matches in an All-Girls wrestling tournament. But shes only had two matches for the JV boys team this year. The problem is twofold: Not enough wrestlers in her weight class, and other teams' reluctance to put a boy against her in a match.
Emily is the fifth girl South Rivers coach
Klessinger has coached, so its nothing new to him. There were
two previous girl wrestlers at South River in years past. Emily
enjoys the sport of wrestling.
A lot of people tell her she's a pioneer.

A lot of great High School matches have taken place in the recent months with lots of upsets and surprises!
Five years ago when Bobby Bunting took over as wrestling coach at Bethesda Chevy Chase High school, there was little tradition on which to build. The team hadn't had a winning season in anyone's memory and when Bunting held his first tryout, just nine prospects showed up.
Last saturday the barons made a miraculous
comeback at home to defeat Magruder, 34-33, B-CC earned its first
ever berth in the region dual tournament.
This season has been a tale of close finishes, most of them successful
for the barons. B-CC was 4-10 last year, but the addition of talented
transfer Sonny Nucci and a year of experience for a few baron
wrestlers who took their lumps last season has tranformed a perennial
loser into a winner.
Nucci transfered from state wrestling powerhouse Northern and the fine talents of the Jeronimo brothers, Eric (130) and Chad (140) who have not been beated so far by a Montgomery County public school wrestler.
Chad Jeronimo is (23-0) won the Big "M" tournament and is the reigning county champ at 130 weight class. His brother Eric Jeronimo (20-3) finished third in the Big "M" tournament. If you were to watch Chad & Eric wrestle and you happened to blink to might miss the match they are speed of lighting fast so quick its almost like watching a Martial Arts wrestling match.
Coach Bunting said his guys never give up. They think they have a chance. Winning a few like beating Magruder gives you confidence you can do it.
B-CC (10-3) has 10 wrestlers with winning records.
Sophomore Andrew McNeill (275) is 14-7. Senior Ben Simon (215)
is 16-6.
Sophomore Patrick Genova has been a big key according to coach
Bunting.
last saturday he got Nucci into position to win with a pin at
135.
Great things happen when you work together, train hard, and have
the desire to win and B-CC wrestlers have shown that with alot
of heart.
B-cc has a moto of "It's not about liking to win, it's about hating to lose" and I think that says it all.
Kent Island Junior Varsity tournament
17 weight classes - 135 wrestlers - very well organized as always

After spending the last half-decade at or near the bottom half of the standings, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High wrestling team is enjoying a resurgence this season. The Barons, who went 4-10 last season, have already surpassed their win total of a year ago and are currently battling for a division title.
With wins over Springbrook (48-24) and crushing
St.Anselm's (76-6)
Coach Bobby Bunting said the key this year is the wrestlers attitudes.
They think they can go out and beat anybody and thats alot different
than in past years the kids are working harder and that is paying
off.
SPOTLIGHT: WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Tommy Priestly School: Northwestern High
Year: Senior
Highlights: two weeks after having a lymph node removed, Priestly
finished second in the 160-pound weight class at the Bowie tournament.
He won his first three matches (all by pin) before losing in the
final.
In two plus seasons on varsity, Priestly has never been pinned,
a streak of 62 matches.
He finished fourth at last season's Maryland 3A-4A South Regionals.
NOTABLE: last season, Priestly was 22-13, including winning the
171 class at the Severna Park tournament. He was named Northwestern's
most improved wrestler and helped the team earn a berth in the
3A-4A South Region tournament. This season he is one of three
Captains on the squad. last year he won the Jesse J. Warr leadership
award from the Prince Georges County School Board.
PERSONAL: Tommy is a member of the school "It's Academic"
team, and will appear on Channel 4 news quiz show. He's earned
a 4.0 grade point average the last three semesters. Is co-editor
of the schools yearbook and was elected class rep to the student
government association.
This past fall he became an Eagle Scout.
Burke Edwards, a senior at Sherwood High School
in Montgomery County
recently was awarded his "100 wins" award congrats Burke!
Burke is currently undefeated and his goal is to win a state championship.
Just one mistake cost teenager his life
C.J. Jett had made it.
Through hard work and hustle, in the classroom and on the wrestling
mat, and the guiding hands of coaches, teachers, and guardians,
the South River High senior was headed for college.
The Davidsonville teen-ager just made one mistake, and it cost
him everything.
On Dec.23 on Route 214 in Edgewater he lost control of his car
and his life. He was in top physical condition, bulking up his
slight 135 pound frame for wrestling and football. His dedication
drove him to always stay late after wrestling practice to get
more work in.
Last semester he made the honor roll. Finally confident he could
make it in college he was seeking scholarships and had a couple
good leads.
CJ's wrestling coach John Klessinger noticed
the 135-pound team leader had stepped it up a notch after getting
extra attention from four-time NCAA champion Cael Sanderson and
his Iowa State coach Bobby Douglas, at a wrestling camp last summer.
"This camp was serious. They worked six hours a day at the
camp. CJ event spent extra time after the camp with Cael Sanderson
on drilling and moves.
He was off to a good start this season, winning his weight class
at the Bowie tournament. C.J.'s energy and cheery disposition
will always be remembered C.J. would hit you with his smile, He
always had a kind word. personal to you. He was sincere, respectful,
concerned with others CJ had a maturity beyond his years.
At C.J's funeral his wrestling teammates served as pallbearers
the church was packed. Southern High School's wrestling team showed
up to pay respects, as did several wrestlers from all over the
state.
C.J.'s guardians hope area teens will take note of their loss, that they will stop and think inexperience and speeding are a dangerous combination C.J. will truly be missed in the Maryland Wrestling community we all send our prayers to his family, teammates and friends.
Frank Edwards is on a roll at the Naval Academy
he's won 8 straight.
Navy coach Bruce Burnett said Frank is a gifted wrestler. Frank
said his individual goal this season is to earn a All-American
honors, which go to the top eight finishers in each weight division
at the national tournament.
Edwards is superstitious when it comes to preparing for a match.
Whether it's a bagel and a banana following weigh-in or a certain
song on his walkman, Edwards relies on a pre-match routine to
reach a high level of concentration.
"When you think about it, wrestling is
all in your head," Edwards said. "You only spend seven
minutes out there, so you'd think any guy off the street who's
in condition could do that. So it all comes down to focus and
who wants it more."
Navy Coach Bruce Burnett says Edwards' physical attributes are
impressive, but that's not all Edwards brings to the table.
"He's a gifted athlete; He's quick, strong and flexible,
which are nice characteristics to have for the sport of wrestling."
when hes at his best, he's very intense. He's a fierce competitor.
Frank is capable of winning the national tournament said coach Burnett.
Maryland's own hometown guys products of Annapolis High School Daniel and Andrew Hemminger have their moments wrestling at the Naval Academy Daniel is 10-9 at 141 pounds while Andrew is 8-8 at 174 pounds.

Former Wrestler Helps Nation Grapple with Sniper
For three long weeks a pair of serial killers plagued the Maryland, Virginia and Washington,D.C. area gunning down random victims.
And for those weeks the nation was comforted,
informed and reassured by Montgomery County, MD., Police Chief
Charles A. Moose.
his picture was on the front pages of newspapers worldwide for
weeks, and he quickly became one of the most well-known faces
in Law enforcement.
Charles Moose was raised in Lexington, a small town in central North Carolina. "There were problably as many people in Lexington as there were at UNC (University of North Carolina) Moose said. Moose graduated from UNC in 1975. During his early years at UNC, Moose joined the Wrestling team and lived in Ehringhaus Residence Hall with other athletes.
Moose, who received his bachelor's degree in U.S.History, said he enjoyed the academic climate but found the adjustment to some classes rough. He said one of the best parts of his time at UNC was competing on the wrestling team. Moose said the being on the wrestling team was "Intense mental and tough".
UNC Coach Lam said Moose was impressed with Moose's ability to adjust to the program He was the glue that held the team together."
As he began to watch Moose address the world on television, Lam said, he was surprised to see Moose's same drive and determination intact.
He had the same type of character and demeanor
as a wrestler.
History Professor David Griffiths, who served as Moose's adviser
during college, said he also was impressed with Moose.
'He was a black student here when there were few, " Griffiths said. "He was able to pull himself up from difficult sutuations. He was really self-made."
Moose said many different people and experiences influenced him and shaped his value system.
"My Dad, who died when i was 20, was definitely a strong male influence in my life, " Moose said. "Being in wrestling and serving in the law enforcement field has also influenced me."
In addition to his law enforcement duties as Chief of Police of Montgomery County the largest Police Department in the State. Moose also serves as a major in the District of Columbia Air National Guard.
Moose said now that the main portions of the sniper case are wrapping up, He is getting a chance to take things a bit slowly. and things around the state are now trying to get back to normal.

Navy's biggest strengths this season is the
depth and experience in each weight class. Starters return in
eight of the 10 weight classes.
and several talented young wrestlers available.
Leading the way for the Naval Academy is senior and the Mids captain Steve kovach. Kovach has posted an 84-24 career record in the heavyweight division, including 38 wins during the 2000-2001 season, the third highest single-season win total in school history.
Kovach enters the 2002-2003 campaign ranked
in the top 10 nationally
after a third place finish at the EIWA Championship. He then advanced
to the NCAA Championship, where he dropped his first match of
the tournament. then responding with three-straight back to back
wins in the wrestlebacks before falling just one win shy of earning,
ALL-America honors. Coach Burnett points to Kovach's hard work
as his greatest attribute as a leader. "He's one the the
hardest workers i've ever been around. For him to be a heavyweight
and work as hard as he does, that is one of the key factors to
his success. He knows the things he has to do to be at the top
of his game."
Daniel Hemminger (annapolis, MD) and Nate Gulosh are top candidates to replace Mark Conley in the 141-pound weight class. Hemminger posted an 11-10 record last year, while Gulosh went 5-6 in his rookie season.
Navy will face a slew of quality teams this season, including perennial powerhouses Oklahoma and Lehigh. The Midshipmen will host the Navy Classic November 23.
See Ya'll on matside!
