Massachusetts Division II Preview
The following teams have been selected on the basis of the number of returning State placewinners and State qualifiers returning for the upcoming season.
Division II: School 2011 Finish
(Predicted finish in 2012)
1. Natick HS State 1st Dual-Meet
1. North Andover HS State 1st Individual
3. Central Catholic HS State 3rd
4. Dracut HS State 4th
North Andover HS won the MIAA Division-II Dual-Meet Championship in 2011. Natick meanwhile won the Massachusetts Division-II Individual Tournament State Championship. Congratulations to both teams on their outstanding performances.
Repeat Dual-Meet Champions North Andover HS will be co-favorites to win again in 2012. Congratulations to Coach Carl Cincotta for leading his squad during difficult and trying times. Seniors Jason Ricketts (State Champion at 140) and Dan Connelly (2nd State at 152) will head a deep and talented team. Other returning placewinners include junior Ryan Neals (3rd State at 189) and Danielle Coughlin (4th State at 103) and sophomore Brad Drover (3rd State at 130). Returning seniors Cody Alter (112) and John Pollard (hvywt) and sophomore Zane Melillo (125) also have state experience.
Natick HS graduated five state placewinners from last season’s team. What should not be overlooked however is that Natick brought their entire team to states, all fourteen wrestlers. So, although they lost a great deal of talent, Natick should still have enough firepower to edge out North Andover but it won’t be easy. Seniors James Smith (State and All-State Champion at 135) and Zach Thomas (2nd State at 119) will anchor an experienced group of returnees. Juniors Alexe Restivo-Lage (3rd State at 160), Peter Gutierrez (5th State at 112) and Mariano Restivo-Lage (6th State at 145) will lend their support for another strong campaign. Other experienced starters will include senior Will Sulser (130) junior Ethan Ziegler (125) and sophomore Mark Gutierrez (103).
Central Catholic HS is always near the top at the end of the season and 2012 will be no exception. Central Catholic will again return a nucleus of outstanding wrestlers. They are senior Ryan O’Boyle (State Champion at 112 and 2nd in All-States) and junior Pat Lacroix (3rd State at 112). Seniors Matt Kando (145), Dave Stryzkalski (160) and Manny Suarez (hvywt) will need to come through for Central Catholic in order to contend with Natick and North Andover.
Dracut HS returns four quality wrestlers for the upcoming season. Juniors Mike Stewart (3rd State at 125 and 3rd at All-States) and Jimmy Ryan (2nd State at 145 and 3rd at All-States) will provide quality leadership for Dracut HS in 2012. Also returning are freshman Jon Ryan (2nd State at 103) and senior Peter Salem (215).
Division II Teams to watch:
A dark horse in D-II will be Quabbin Regional HS. They return six wrestlers with State experience. Senior Marcello Cuci (3rd State at 171) will head a solid group of returning state qualifiers. They are seniors Kane Hardaker (140), Henry McKenna (145), Emmitt Zalneraitis (152) and Mike Kierman (160) and junior Dan Ludwig (103).
Winchester HS returns senior Nick Cashion (5th State at 119) and junior Quinn Gregory (6th State at 112) along with senior qualifier Steve Spry (125).
Junior State Champion Mark Carroll (103) will return for Needham HS in 2012. State qualifier Zach Goldman (112), a sophomore, also returns.
Massachusetts Division III Preview
The following teams have been selected on the basis of the number of State placewinners and State qualifiers returning for the upcoming season.
Division III: School 2011 Finish
(Predicted finish in 2012) 1. Norton HS State 2nd
2. Triton HS State 3rd
3. Tyngsboro HS State 1st
Tyngsboro repeated as the Massachusetts Division-III Individual Tournament State Champions in 2011. Triton took the MIAA Division-III Dual-Meet State Championship. Congratulations to both programs for your outstanding seasons.
Division III teams, because of the size of their schools usually have somewhat smaller squads and fewer returning state qualifiers than Division I and II schools. There are also more forfeits in D-III schools than in D-I or D-II. On the other hand some D-III schools have 7th and/or 8th grades in their high school thus giving them a definite advantage.
Norton HS is the team to beat in Division III. Although they will have a ‘good’ dual meet team, Norton should be the favorite to win the individual tournament championship. Norton returns five state placewinners from last year. Seniors Brett Gallagher (State Champion at 119), Scott Coleman (2nd State at 135), John Royle (2nd State at 145) and Cam Hale (6th State at 125) and junior Steve Hudson (4th State at 215) will provide the nucleus of a formidable team.
Triton HS is going to have another strong team in 2012. Triton returns juniors Victor Ramirez (2nd State at 103) and Mark Rosmarinofski (4th State at 119) and seniors Matt Mills (5th State at 125) and Bryan Giblin (6th State at 171) to make a run at the D-III crown in February. Other returning state qualifiers for Triton are freshman Luke Boyle (112) and sophomore Cody Nixon (130).
Although graduating three state placers would eliminate most teams from contention, Tyngsboro HS will look to re-re-repeat in 2012. Junior Ryan Nivens (State Champion and 3rd in All-State at 140) and seniors Steve Jacobs (3rd State at 215) and Nate Balakin (4th State at 145) will be the foundation for another successful season. Senior Shawn McCoy (130) is also returning.
There are other outstanding teams in Division III. They include:
Cohasset HS will be a dark horse in D-III. Seniors Derek Froio (4th State at 152) and Gus Helbock (5th State at 119) will anchor the Cohasset team. Senior Graden Foley (140) and junior Nick Tangherlini (145) will provide additional state tournament experience.
The West will be represented by South Hadley HS. A trio of wrestlers will provide experience for the South Hadley team. They are seniors Nick Rojas (6th State at 145) and Carter Levreault (152) and junior Travis Warren (112).
Although Wayland HS graduated eight state qualifiers (including five state placewinners) from their 2011 squad, junior Nick Coffin (5th State at 103) will return to lead the rebuilding process.
“This is fantastic,” explained a wrestling official, with more than thirty years of experience.
“This makes it so easy to know what’s going on,” commented a parent attending the state wrestling championships for the first time.
“This is the best run tournament that I’ve ever been at,” confided numerous coaches, wrestlers and officials throughout the weekend.
Going to a two-day, 32-man, double elimination, eight-mat tournament can be confusing, even for the most experienced of coaches, wrestlers and spectators. With tournament clerk Desi Kaplan and the Paperless TourneySM tournament program, you can find out in seconds exactly what’s going on. There are no bout sheets. There are no pencils and there are no mistakes. Each match is tied into a computer that updates the time and score as the match is going on. The table worker can’t ‘screw up’ because they can’t accidentally award points to the wrong wrestler.
Ten years ago, Desi’s partner and friend Doug Sikora wrote the computer software that would serve as the template for the Paperless TourneySM . Over the past decade Doug and Desi have worked together to perfect this breakthrough in clerking wrestling tournaments.
The MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) awarded Desi Kaplan the clerkship for all three state tournaments (held at three different venues at the same time and date) along with the Massachusetts All-State Tournament. Together with his father, Larry Kaplan and veteran tournament clerk Scotty Tremlett, all four tournaments went on without a hitch.
You can follow your favorite wrestler’s progress at the tournament on any computer from anywhere in the world in real time. You can pull up any bracket and immediately find out when and where that wrestler competes next. You can also find out who is wrestling on any mat in the gym, what the score is and how much time is left from any one of the many computer monitors set up around the gymnasium. The need for numerous incessant PA announcements is also diminished.
“It really is amazing, what Desi Kaplan has done for our sport,” explained longtime wrestling coach Carmine Colace. “Desi clerked a (MIAA) Sectional tournament last year and everyone was so pleased that the MIAA immediately signed him up for this year’s (MIAA) States and All-States. The parents, wrestlers and coaches were all ecstatic in their praise for the Paperless TourneySM program.”
Imagine that you are a parent who is traveling on a business trip in another part of the world. All you have to do is sign on to Kapwrestling.net and check out the brackets and scores whenever you want. You can follow the match as it is taking place while you check out the progress of your next opponent and how much time is left in his match.
Desi Kaplan is a Maryland wrestler, who graduated from Towson University with a BS in chemistry. After getting his PH. D. from North Carolina, Desi moved to Billerica Massachusetts as a research scientist for Bruker Daltonics. In his spare time Desi began clerking local wrestling tournaments and working on his wrestling tournament software program.
The Paperless TourneySM is the most impressive advancement in tournament wrestling in many years.
USA WRESTLING MAGAZINE: Massachusetts Division II Preview
The following teams have been selected on the basis of the number of returning State placewinners and State qualifiers returning for the upcoming season.
Division II: School 2010 Finish
(Predicted finish
in 2011) 1. Natick HS State 4th
2. Central Catholic HS State 1st
Burlington had a remarkable run over the past few years. Division II is always a balanced and deep division with many teams capable of placing in the top-10 in the Individual State Tournament. This year, however it looks as though Natick is going to claim the crown.
Natick HS has the depth of wrestlers to place first at both the dual-meet and the individual state tournaments. Seniors Glen Duffy (6th State at 171), Justin Szeto (135), Arthur Rose (189) and Nate Zeigler (215) will lead the charge to win a state championship for Natick. Also returning are juniors Zac Thomas (3rd State at 112), James Smith (3rd State at 140) and sophomore Peter Gutierrez (2nd State at 103).
Although Central Catholic lost five key seniors from their 2010 State Championship Team, they return a nucleus of outstanding wrestlers. They are seniors Matt Armano (3rd State at 125) and Simon Dullea (135), junior Ryan O’Boyle (State Champion at 112) and sophomore Pat Lacroix (3rd State at 103).
Division II Teams to watch:
Dual-meet Champions North Andover HS will be led by junior Dan Connelly (2nd State at 145) and seniors Adam Bates (5th State at 215) and Jake Mehlman (189).
Belmont HS continues to improve. Senior Julian Lockwood (5th State at 152) and junior Sam Bagdady (2nd State at 112) return for another year.
Winchester HS will be tough to beat in 2011. They return seniors Ryan MacDonald (135) and Brandon Newell (171) along with junior Nick Cashion (6th State at 112) and sophomore Quinn Gregory (103).
Milford HS’s fortunes are dependent upon the success of seniors Jake D’Allessandro (103), Kris Moutinho (112) and Richard Santiago (119).
Needham HS will rebuild around seniors James Carroll (2nd State at 130), Jason Hefter (135) and Rob Timmerman (285) along with sophomore Mark Carroll (103).
Masconomet HS will have juniors Justin Lawrence (5th State at 103), Julian Bandereck (140) and John Fitzsimmons (152) returning from last year’s team.

The following teams have been selected on the basis of the number of returning State placewinners and State qualifiers returning for the upcoming season.
Division III: School 2010 Finish
(Predicted finish
in 2011) 1. Holliston HS State 16th
2. Tyngsboro HS State 1st
3. Wayland HS State 4th
The team to beat in Division III is Holliston. They return their entire lineup and they have the talent to win both the dual-meet and individual State Tournaments. Tyngsboro and Wayland will push Holliston in February. Hudson, Pembroke and Mt. Greylock will also have strong seasons.
Holliston HS has the horses to be one of the top teams in Massachusetts. Holliston returns seniors Larry Enright (3rd State at 103), Tim Garry (3rd State at 112), Brad Losurdo (6th State at 145) and Harry Freudenberger (119). Juniors Bryce Moore (125) and Dave Dubin (160) bring veteran experience to this talented team.
After winning the Individual State Championship in 2010, Tyngsboro HS will look to repeat with veteran seniors Jacob Emond (5th State at 145), Dan LeBrecque (171), Jeff Storry (189) and Pat Ryan (185). Junior Shaun McCoy (6th State at 103) and sophomore Alex Golner (125) also competed at last year’s state tournament.
Wayland HS also returns six wrestlers who competed at ‘States’ last year. Seniors, Jean Mbudimbu (5th State at 171), Griffin McGrail (130), RJ Bolivar (135), Mike Maccini (140), Alex Gupta (152) and Jack McCullough (189) will bring experience in another run for a state championship.
There are many other outstanding teams in Division III. They include:
Hudson HS returns talented sophomores Patrick O’Connell (2nd State at 125), Vinny Bonina (4th State at 103), Tim Parker (119) and David Rogers (135).
Although Pembroke HS graduated six starters from last year’s team, they return seniors Mike McBurnie (140) and Pat Walsh (152), juniors Mike Bunszell (2nd State at 119), Rich Benoit (171) and sophomore Brad Wong (103).
Norton HS has juniors Brett Gallagher (State Champion at 119) and Scott Coleman (2nd State at 130) and senior Derek Hoyt (140) returning for another season.
The West is well represented again by Mt. Greylock. Senior Zach Larabee (135) and juniors Josh Hadley (130), Dylan Walker (140) and Zach Battle (171) should have the experience to place at ‘States.’

USA WRESTLING MAGAZINE: Massachusetts Division I Preview
The following teams have been selected on the basis of the number of returning State placewinners and State qualifiers returning for the upcoming season.
Division I: School 2010 Finish
(Predicted finish
in 2011) 1. Shawsheen HS State 3rd
2. Springfield Central HS State 8th
3. Lawrence HS State 2nd
Shawsheen HS is ready to break through in 2011 but it won’t be easy. There are three quality teams (Shawsheen, Lawrence and Springfield Central) vying for the Division I crown. On any given weekend, any one of these three teams can take it all. Shawsheen has seniors Anthony Pimentel (5th State at 171), Ryan Cassidy (6th State at 145), Anthony Finn (135) and Stephen Higgins (285) returning. Junior Jonathan Stearns (112) and sophomore Devonn Pratt (6th State at 103) will also be counted on at ‘States.’
The west is always well represented by Springfield Central HS. Seniors Anthony Brooks (4th State at 152), Dan Salgado (5th State at 112), Bennet Banks (5th State at 140) and Ruben Gonzalez (6th State at 145 in 2009/just moved back from NH) will make it interesting in February. Junior Tyrique Dowdell (103) will also help out.
You will have to go through Lawrence HS in order to win the D-I States. Senior Juan Rodriguez (2nd State at 160) leads a solid group of returnees. They include senior Shaquille Fuentes (6th State at 130) and Elvis Genao (112) and junior Edgardo Rios (6th State at 112).
There are many other outstanding teams in Division I. They include:
Methuen HS has four underclassmen who will anchor their team in 2011. They are juniors CJ Doherty (State Champion at 135), Sarith Has (3rd State at 103) and Scott Delrossi (160) and sophomore Paul Sughrue (4th State at 112).
Franklin HS brought ten wrestlers to ‘States’ in 2010 and eight of them placed. Unfortunately for Franklin, eight quality seniors graduated from last year’s squad. Although that would be the demise of most programs in our state, I am convinced that Franklin will sneak into the top five by the end of the season. Franklin returns senior Luke Cowper (189) and junior Chris Kelly (6th State at 112) from last year’s championship team.
Framingham HS returns sophomore Johnny Do (4th State at 102), senior Thomas Noah (171) and juniors Robert Coukos (145) and Gill Sa (119).
Lincoln-Sudbury HS has a trio of seniors who will create some noise at the end of the season. They are Eric Davis (6th State at 119), Nick Murphy (3rd State at 130) and Zach Smerlas (2nd State at 285).
Seniors, Andrew Gauthier (State Champion at 103), Brad Myers (2nd State at 112) and Musa Jamina (125) will lead a young Lowell HS team.
Although Bridgewater-Raynham HS graduated all of their upper weights, they will have seniors Matt Libby (3rd State at 125) and Adam Travaglione (145) returning.
