Dear Coaches and Fans,

It that time of year again, winter is still here but that warmth of spring is starting to show, its time for wrestling at the Metra, in Billings, MT.  Wrestling fans are excited to get back to Billings for the All-Class event that was split up last year due to damage on the Metra from a tornado, but wrestling fans are going to get the money’s worth from this year’s state tournament. 

The stage is set to make history as we have an opportunity to crown four individual 4-time state champions. Luke Zeiger, Luke Schlosser, Ben Stroh and Cole Mendenhall are on a collision course with history.  In the team races I believe I spoke to soon in the last newsletter.  The AA race is set Skyview looks to have the advantage going into the state tournament but Great Falls High and Glacier High are not going to go down with out a fight.  The team title will prove to be a real treat to watch in AA as the wrestlers from all three teams’ battle out not only in the semis and finals but through backdoor as the fight for each and every point they can gather for their respective teams.  The Class A favorite is Laurel but after the smoke cleared at the respective divisional tournaments it looks to be a battle with Havre bringing 19 wrestlers to the state tournament and Corvallis bringing 18 to battle Laurel’s 14 qualifiers.  This Class A race is shaping up to be a real “barnburner” with Laurel having its studs versus Corvallis’s and Havre’s depth.  Class B divisional set up the heavy favorites Forsyth with a great shot at the repeat, but Choteau won’t be far behind.

What would the week of state be without the young but ever growing rivalry between the UGF Argos and the MSU-Northern Lights?  The states two college programs match-up this week for their final dual of the year in Havre as they head into their post season.  The Argos are ranked 4^th and the Lights are ranked 9^th and it looks to be anybody’s dual.  For those wrestling fans headed to state this is a match-up to catch before making the trek to Billings.

Montana High School All-Class Wrestling Poll As of 1/24

The organizers of the 4th Annual Tournament of Champions (TOC) from the personal injury law firm of Hoyt and Blewett PLLC in Great Falls have released an updated All-Class High School Wrestling Poll. The poll, which was generated with input from high school wrestling coaches from around the state, combines the wrestlers in Class AA, A, and B-C to recognize the top wrestlers in each weight class in Montana. Class AA leads with 7 number one ranked wrestlers. Montana High School Class AA Duals

The seeds held at the Class AA duals in Bozeman Saturday. Western AA's top seed Kalispell Glacier and Eastern AA No. 1 seed Great Falls High met in the championship round. The Wolfpack defeated the Bison, 50-27.

Billings Skyview bounced back from a semifinal round loss to Glacier to beat Billings Senior 48-34 for third place.

Senior was in the consolation championship after earning a 35-34 win in the consolation semifinals over Bozeman High. Seth James (119 pounds), Silas Hopkins (125), Markus Kolp (130) and Butch Andersen (140) earned pins for the Hawks, but it wasn't enough to get past the Broncs.

In the fifth-place match, Bozeman was awarded the place because Missoula Sentinel forfeited the dual.

Bozeman fell to GFH in the semifinals, 41-30. Vito DeGidio (98), Hopkins, Kolp, Adam Wollant (152), Cole Gebhardt (160) and Keyten Andersen (189) all posted wins for the Hawks over the Bison.

In the seventh-place dual, Helena bested Billings West 51-26.

The organizers of the 4th Annual Tournament of Champions (TOC) from the personal injury law firm of Hoyt and Blewett PLLC in Great Falls have released an All-Class High School Wrestling Poll. Jim Zalesky Wrestling Camps will be offering a camp at The University of Great Falls on June 18th-22nd

We hope the collegiate season went well and you are enjoying just a little bit of down time. Many of you most likely have kids still competing in the spring, as they are looking to prepare for the future.

I wanted to let you know about a great opportunity for your wrestlers and team to get better this summer for a very economical fee. Jim Zalesky Wrestling Camps will be offering a camp at The University of Great Falls on June 18th-22nd. We are excited to come back to UGF for the third consecutive year and have had a great experience the past two summers.

Coaches from Oregon State University and UGF will be on hand as technicians and coaching the sessions. Also college wrestlers from both universities will be acting as councilors and going through the sessions with the campers. The ratio of staff to camper has been very high the past few summers and we plan to do the same thing again.

Please take the opportunity to attend a great camp for a great price. I can assure you that the staff at Jim Zalesky's Big Sky Wrestling Camp will work hard to help every camper get better during the week.

3rd Annual MontanaTournament of Champions

Class B/C showcased the depth of its wrestling talent by winning a tournament-high 9 titles at the 3rd Annual Tournament of Champions sponsored by the personal injury law firm of Hoyt and Blewett PLLC in Great Falls.  Class A followed with 4 titles while Class AA took home 2 titles.  The one-day, single elimination all-star wrestling tournament featured the top wrestlers in the state and took place on Saturday in Great Falls in front of a boisterous crowd of approximately 600.  The field of 61 wrestlers from classes AA, A, and B/C included a record-high 31 state champions from last week's all-class wrestling tournament in Billings, including a number of repeat champions.  Jade Rauser and Val Rauser of Broadwater both captured their third TOC titles to cap a decorated career which included seven state titles between them.  The event was marked by numerous competitive matches involving state champions from AA, A and B/C. “This is the most champs we’ve had yet,” said tournament sponsor and Great Falls attorney Zander Blewett. "The state champs went out and put on a real spectacle for the crowd. We tip our hats to every wrestler who showed up because they not only put their state title's on the line, they left their hearts on the mat," added Blewett. The Following wrestlers earned titles

Thoughts on the LeProwse Tournament 2011

One of the last major invitational tournaments of the year occurred over the weekend with the Bozeman Invitational.

As we approach state there are fewer of these invitational tourneys for the teams competing, with the Cowboy in Miles City and the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain in Missoula coming up. Yes, there are the Class A Duals and the AA Duals and they are fun but a dual tourney is not how a state tournament is scored.

The big news was that Class A Belgrade came up with the championship, 210.5-173.5 over Billings Senior. Belgrade was second at the CMR tourney to Great Falls 195.5-189. Glacier was third there, Havre fourth and Senior fifth. At the Mining City Duals, Bozeman was first, Flathead second, Glacier third and Havre fourth.

Belgrade did not have an individual champion, but did have second-place finishers in Levi Cade at 189 and Austin Reyher at 215. Finishing third for the Panthers were Bryce Weatherston (119) and Jordan Malarchick (171). Fourth-place finishers were Keaton Sterling (135), Ethan Sterling (140) and Bryce Akers (145). Those grapplers formed enough of a pack to give Belgrade the team title.

And Billings Senior showed its mettle and proved it was more than worthy of being ranked fourth in the latest Class AA coaches poll. The Broncs of coach Lonnie Robertson had an impressive showing with champions in Tanner Sprenkle (135) and Ben Sulser (152). They also had second-place finishers in Tayte Wegner (98), C.J. Ness (105) and Cree Minkoff (112).

Sprenkle defeated Josh Morin of Great Falls 1-0 in the title match to get a little payback over his rival. Morin defeated Sprenkle 3-2 at the Holiday to earn the Outstanding Wrestler award and snap Sprenkle's -- a three-time AA state champion -- winning streak at 90 matches. Sprenkle had not lost since the Eastern AA seeding tourney as a freshman.

Also at 105 pounds for the Broncs, Ness improved from a match earlier in the week against Butte's Zak Harney and wrestled to a 6-point loss in the championship. So, that's another good sign for Senior as the road to state gets a little shorter. At this time of the year, coaches tend to look for wrestlers closing the gap on common opponents in their weight division.
"It all came from over Christmas break," Minkoff said of the Broncs impressive showing against Butte in a 52-26 win last Thursday. "We worked our butts off. When you work that hard it's tough to get beat."

After the Butte dual, coach Robertson said he has been stressing to his wrestlers to battle until the end of every match no matter the score.
"You not only give yourself a chance to win, you give your team a chance to win," he said.
Winning the OW in Bozeman was Cole Mendenhall of Great Falls. All Mendenhall did was hand Val Rauser of Townsend a pin in 1:51. Rauser, a senior, is a two-time state champion with only five losses  in his prep career. Rauser had beaten Mendenhall 10-8 in OT at the CMR Holiday.
Val's twin brother Jade won his 151st consecutive match and won the title at 119 to remain undefeated in his prep career. Jade had wrestled at 125 at the CMR tourney.

Not to be forgotten was the performances of Laurel's Tommy Cooper (140) and Dylan Kramer (160), both of whom won titles in Bozeman.

The organizers of the 3rd Annual Tournament of Champions (TOC) from the personal injury law firm of Hoyt and Blewett PLLC in Great Falls have released an All-Class High School Wrestling Poll. The poll, which was generated with input from high school wrestling coaches from around the state, combines the wrestlers in Class AA, A, and B-C to recognize the top wrestlers in each weight class in Montana. Gillette looks ready to rumble

After Billings Senior's Ben Sulser defeated Gillette's Trevor O'Dowd for the 152-pound Billings Invitational wrestling title Saturday night he felt pretty good about himself.

And rightfully so. Gillette's Campbell County Camels are the eight-time defending Wyoming state champions and have won the team title in the Billings Invite four times in the past five years.
"It felt good because as a team coming into the Billings Invite, Gillette is here every year and has a bunch of skilled wrestlers," said the junior, who was state AA runner-up last year at 140. "It feels good to be at that level."

Gillette coach Tom Seamans said the Camels have more than 70 kids out for wrestling this year (the three Billings public high schools average 51). He attributed that number to a large freshman class that features 30 athletes.

Despite their performance in Billings -- Gillette had five champions and all 12 wrestlers placed in the top four -- Seamans said the Camels still have work to do.

"We found some things we need to work on," he said. "We knew coming into the season we'd have a solid team."

The Camels provided a good measuring stick for the Billings schools, a fact that was not lost on Skyview 98-pound freshman champion Jace Holman.

"Gillette looked really tough out there," Holman said. "They have a lot of kids come out every year. Coach (Rich Malia) tells us to get ready for Gillette; they have a great team and great wrestlers and we knew this weekend would be tough."

Skyview finished second with 210 points to Gillette's 279.5. The Falcons, last year's State AA runner-up, had three individual champions in Holman, Brock Miller (119) and Clay Cathey (125), who also won the Outstanding Wrestler.

Skyview placed 11 wrestlers, including runner-up Sam Shelton at 145. The Falcons have placed second at the past three state tournaments to Kalispell Flathead, and Cathey figures if the Falcons continue to improve they should have a good chance to knock the Braves off come February.
"We are going to be solid this year and should have a good shot at state," Cathey said. "Some of our big guys are banged up but we'll get them back. Our goal, like always, is a team state title."

The Falcons weren't the only Billings school feeling good about themselves when the dust settled at the West High gym.

With 12 placers, the Bears finished third with 190.5 points. The Bears are hoping to build on that performance.

"Now that you have done well at a tournament you are almost expected to do well," said West's Dan Gordon, who won the title at 140. "It mak
es you go that much more to meet expectations."
Senior finished fourth with 186 points.
All three Billings schools will be in action this Friday and Saturday at the pestigious Mining City Duals in Butte.

"I am expecting us to battle and be competitive at the Mining City Duals," Sulser said.
Havre romps to Blue Pony championship

HAVRE — The power Havre Blue Ponies flexed their muscles Saturday as they dominated their own invitational wresting tournament.

Coach Scott Filius' defending state Class A champions tallied 334.5 points to win the one-day event by scoring more than twice as many points as runner-up Lewistown.
The Blue Ponies won six individual titles, while Lewistown and Class C Chinook took two apiece.

The teams also conducted a non-counting seeding tourney here on Friday.
Wolverines win own Invitational

CASCADE — The host Cascade-Simms Wolverines scored 186.5 points to win their own Badger Invitational wrestling tournament. The two-day event ended Saturday at Cascade High.
Choteau was second with 176 points and Townsend was third at 145, followed by the Great Falls High junior varsity squad at 143.

Cole Rice of Arlee, who won the title at 152 pounds, was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

The Rauser brothers of Townsend, Val and Jade, both won championships, as expected.
The tournament attracted 20 teams, mostly Class B-C squad and a few Class AA junior varsity outfits.

3rd Annual Montana Tournament of Champions

Yet another exciting high school wrestling season is upon us. As such, I wanted to remind you that the law firm of Hoyt and Blewett PLLC will again be sponsoring the 3rd Annual Tournament of Champions in Great Falls on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Great Falls High School Old Gym. The last two years were a rousing success. Wrestling fans across Montana got the opportunity to watch the best wrestlers in the state, regardless of class, square off against each other. Each year, the TOC continues to attract more champions. Last year's TOC featured 28 champions, up from 23 the year before.

Given the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received the last two years, we fully intend to make the Tournament of Champions an annual event. As word of the tourney spreads throughout the state, we anticipate more champions wanting to make the trip to Great Falls to compete against the best in their respective weight classes.

As you know, for the first time in nearly two decades, the AA, A, and BC state tournaments will be held in separate locations throughout the state. This means wrestling fans will not have the opportunity to see the best wrestlers from all three classifications. At the same time, it makes the TOC even more meaningful because our event will provide fans the one chance to watch those champions compete.

Like last year, anyone who finishes in the top 3 at his weight class at the state tournament will be considered for a spot in the competition. Of course, all 45 state champions will be given the first invitation to compete in the event. However, should a state champion choose not to compete, coaches will at least be on notice that any wrestler who places in the top 3 at the state tournament is a potential selection.

Like last year, we will contact you within 24 hours of the finals to let you know who has been invited. If you could please tell us within 48 hours which of your champions intend to wrestle in the tourney and which of your 2nd and 3rd place wrestlers wish to wrestle, it would certainly help us with our administration of the tournament.

As was the case the last two years, all wrestlers and coaches will be put up at the Town House Inn free of charge on Friday night. In addition, any vehicle used to transport a wrestler will be compensated for its gas mileage.
