FOUR-TIME
CHAMPIONS LEAD FIRST NEBRASKA WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED ULTIMATE
CHAMPIONS TEAM
GRETNA, Neb. -- Four-time champions Chris Oliver of Creighton
Prep and Jason
Katusin of Platteview lead the list of the first Nebraska Wrestling
Illustrated Ultimate Champions team that was announced Wednesday.
Michael Carnes, E-Publisher for Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated,
said the
team was put together as a best-of-the-best concept to honor the
state's
outstanding wrestlers.
"We don't have a Champion of Champions tournament as other
states do, and
this is an opportunity to maybe settle an argument, or start one,
as to who
the best wrestlers in each weight class are," he said.
Only the four wrestlers who were state champions at each weight
class were
eligible for selection to the team. Criteria used for selecting
the first
and second teams included a combination of season record, head-to-head
matchups among state champions and past tournament medal finishes.
"We had a number of weights where there was a clear first
choice, but that
second choice was tough," Carnes said. "Head-to-head
settled a couple of the
debates and past finishes took care of others, but there were
a few where
two guys were being left out that were as worthy of inclusion
as the two who
got in."
The 2004 NWI Ultimate Champions team is as follows:

103- Josh Pyzdek, Louisville

Hochstrasser
Brings home 4th region title and 4th OutstandingWrestler award
in 4 weeks
The Tooele Buffaloes turned in another good performance placing
third at
region 11 this weekend. Andrew Hochstrasser turned in another
outstanding
performance pinning all of his opponents in the first period of
each match.
He also earned his 3rd OW wrestler award in three years. Giving
him his 4th
consecutive Region Title in his 4 year career at Tooele High School.
But
even more sensational may be that in his last four tournaments
Hochstrasser
has received 4 Outstanding Wrestler awards all voted on by the
coaches at
each tournament Uintah TOC, Tiger Griz, High Country Classic,
Region Eleven
Championships. Coach Miller stated that " Andrew has been
on a roll this
whole season in fact pretty much his entire career, but these
last four
tournaments he has been something special. I am glad that the
other coaches
have giving him the recognition he deserves he has worked hard
for it and
the results show it.
Tooele also had 2 other Region Eleven champions AT Cisco battled
to a gold
in the 140 weight division over teammate Ray Trujillo who received
a silver
medal for his performance this weekend and Spencer Arsalanian
garnered a
Gold in the 215 lb division.
Nick Trujillo at 112 brought home a bronze third place finish.
Marco Liebert
also took third at 119. Brad Gufstason also brought home a bronze
medal at
125. Bryce Jensen at 135 also garnered a third place medal. Matt
Goode took
home a Silver medal finish at 145. Trevor Buhl also brought home
a Silver
medal at 160. Courtney Sanberg at 189 qualified for state at 189.
Coach Miller stated that the team did well considering all that
has gone on
this year considering the lack of depth on the team we did fair
We can do
better but this is what we have to take to the state tournament.
With the
next three days being very important lots of hard work and a little
luck we
could be in the top five this year at State.
**The top 4 placers at the region tournament qualify for the

Tiger-Grizzly
Inviational in Idaho Falls, including seven Utah teams
Thirty-two teams from four states traveled recently to the
Tiger-Grizzly
Inviational in Idaho Falls, including seven Utah teams. Wrestling
powerhouse
Wasatch High School came out with the 1st place trophy, but Utah
rounded out
the top three with Box Elder High School coming in third. In addition,
Utah
superstar Andrew Hochstrasser of Tooele High School came out with
the
Outstanding Wrestler trophy for the lower weights.
Wasatch won top honors by a healthy 75 points over 2nd-place Eagle
High
School (Idaho), with wrestlers in the finals in eight of the 13
weights, and
half of those closing with wins. Second-place Eagle had four wrestlers
in
championship matches, with two coming away with wins. Third-place
Box Elder
had one wrestler in the finals, illustrating what great depth
their team
really has.
Among Wasatch's champions was Casey Smith (103 lbs.), Cyler Sanderson
(135
lbs.), Colton Salazar (152 lbs.) and Jordan Smith (160 lbs.).
Other Utah
wrestlers coming out on top included Hochstrasser (130 lbs.) and

SECOND-ANNUAL NEBRASKA WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED
"BEST OF WRESTLING" AWARDS
ANNOUNCED
GRETNA, Neb. -- Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated
honored a fallen wrestler and
a rising program in its second-annual Best of Wrestling Awards,
announced
Wednesday.
Weeping Water standout Kyle Sorensen, who died
in an auto accident in June,
was honored as the Wrestler of the Year. He was a four-time finalist
and
three-time champion for the Indians and was deserving of the award,
according to E-publisher Michael Carnes.
Madison's wrestling program picked up two awards.
The team was named Team of
the Year and their coach, Kenny Loosvelt, picked up Coach of the
Year
honors.
"It's tough to try and pick the best of
the best each year, and for every
one you select, there are at least 4-5 more who are just as deserving,"
Carnes said.

NEBRASKA WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED'S AWARDS ANNOUNCED
GRETNA, Neb. -- Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated
e-magazine announced its
first winners in the Best of Wrestling awards for the 2001-2002
season.
Lincoln East had a hand in two awards, as coach
Marty McCurdy was named High
School Coach of the Year and his Class A champion Spartans were
tabbed as
Team of the Year.
"I think many people, myself included,
thought Lincoln East was a year away
from achieving the state championship that they earned this past
season, but
Marty and his boys certainly did a super job and are deserving
of both
awards," Michael Carnes, E-Publisher of NWI, said in announcing
the awards.
Four-time state champions Todd Meneely of Omaha
Skutt and Brett Allgood of
Bennington were named as Co-Wrestlers of the Year as the two joined
an elite
list of 10 wrestlers in state high school history to win four
straight state
titles. Allgood joined Brad Metzler of Omaha Westside as the only
four-time
undefeated wrestlers in history.
Other awards in the NWI Best of Wrestling honors went to:

ASSISTANT COACH - Marty Smith, David City Aquinas

NEBRASKA WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED GOES OVER 200,000 DOWNLOADS
GRETNA, Neb. -- The summer wrestling season
is coming to a close in
Nebraska, and the state's top wrestling publication surpassed
another
milestone this summer.
Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated, the only statewide
wrestling publication
(found on the internet at www.nwimag.com) recently had its 200,000th
download for the 2001-2002 season, marking an 800 percent increase
over its
25,000 downloads experienced during its first season.
"We've had detractors, from day one, tell
us that there is not enough
interest in the state of Nebraska to justify coverage of our sport
on the
level we have established," Michael Carnes, E-Publisher of
NWI, said in
announcing the achievement. "And this year, we have not only
proven those
initial predictions wrong, but have raised the bar for other statewide
media
outlets to a point that they are unable to match. And we're not
done raising
that bar yet, not by a long shot."
The e-magazine got its start in the spring
of 2000 when the efforts of the
first Nebraska all-star team to compete in the Dapper Dan Classic
went
ignored by the state's media outlets.
During its first full year, NWI's interest
grew to the point where the
magazine was downloaded over 25,000 times, averaging about 1,600
downloads
per issue.
This year, with its 20th and final issue of
the season recently posted to
the website, the magazine crossed the 200,000 mark to average
10,000
downloads per issue for the season.
And the downloads aren't limited to within the state's borders, Carnes said.
"I've received e-mails from over half
of the 50 states and from as far away
as England and New Zealand," he said. "I've even been
asked to be a guest
host for a radio program in New Zealand after the host saw our
magazine and
was impressed by what's going on with wrestling in our state."
During its second full year, NWI introduced
worked with Huskermat.com
webmaster Ross Halford to produce the state's first and only media-based
rankings for teams and individuals.
"The Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches
Association (NSWCA) has had
coaches rank teams and individuals for years, but no media outlet
took it
upon themselves to do the same thing they do for sports like soccer
and
softball, both of which have significantly fewer teams competing
at the high
school level than wrestling does," Carnes said. "NWI
and Huskermat.com took
that ball and ran with it and challenged the statewide media outlets
to
follow suit."
NWI also provided the fastest coverage of the
state high school wrestling
tournament, updating brackets within minutes of their completion.
As a
result, over 50,000 visitors combed through the site during each
of the
three days of competition.
Carnes, who was one of eight people inducted
into the NSWCA's Hall of Fame
this summer, wouldn't say what plans NWI has for its third full
season,
which will begin with its College Preview issue in early November.
"All I can say is this -- we're not done raising the bar."
"Needing
a Wrestling Win" (Blake Hurtst of The American EnterPrise)
Syracuse, Nebraska-
We drove the 60 miles home with tears of frustration running down Ben's face. He'd just lost two wrestling matches, and he was mad and disappointed and embarrassed. Ben is 15, a high school freshman, and a delightful kid, but his freshman season of wrestling has been difficult. No, it's been awful.
There are only 4 kids on his team, all underclassmen, so Julie and I, along with a contingent of about 4 other parents, one coach, one cheerleader (the others quit!), have been traveling around Iowa and Missouri and Nebraska this winter, watching our sons spend most of their season on their backs.
I think it was Grantland Rice who said, and
I'm paraphrasing here, that "the race doesn't always go to
the swift, or the battle to the strong, but that's the way to
bet".
In adolescent wrestling, bet on the kid with hair on his legs.
While the cool kids all play basketball, Ben decided his future lay in wrestling. So he'll never know the excitement that surrounds high school hoops: No packed gyms with a full coterie of cheerleaders and pep band. No high school chorus starting contests with the national anthem. No big spread in the local paper (especially since the son of the guy who owns our newspaper shows every sign of being an outstanding shooting guard). For local wrestlers it's just sweat and empty gyms on Saturday afternoons, and trips home bearing the sting of another defeat at the hands of someone older, more experienced, and more athletic.
We suffer through 4 hour tournaments, hoping the halt and lame of RockPort, Stanberry, and Hopkins will be wrestling in the 152-pound class. Instead, every kid who shakes hands with Ben at the start of each match looks like he just stepped out of a commercial for home exercise equipment. Sometimes they pin Ben in seconds, sometimes he lasts a full 6 minutes, and a few times he's won, but every match is exhausting.
Nobody ever told me that being a parent was so much work, and so confusing. How do you deal with the disappointment of your only son, who lifts weights 3 times per week, who practices 2 hours every night, who studies tapes of each of his matches, who hasn't eaten a full meal in over 2 months in order to make his weight class? The truth is, we would really like him to pin some sucker from a neighboring town and spend a drive home with a happy kid.
Say what you will about the benefits of competition, the preparation for life that comes with difficulties, that satisfaction that comes from working hard toward a goal, the honor that comes from playing by the rules. When you are 15, none of these things can substitute for winning.
Parents of young athletes have been much in the news lately, and the stories always paint us in a bad light. It's said we're too wrapped up in our kids, too focused on winning, all suburban Mike Tysons ready to explode at any affront from opposing players, parents, coaches, or referees. I don't see that at all. What I see is parents so nervous they can hardly sit, so dedicated they drive hundreds of miles a week to practices and games, concerned about winning only because they want what their kids want.
I personally don't particularly care about my son's won-lost record, or his wrestling future, or whether his team ever wins a meet. But he is working so hard, and wants to win so much, that I'd trade about anything to get him just a few successful outings.
I'll never confront a referee, although I've yelled at a few. And I'm sure Ben will always conduct himself honorably, because we demand it.
Having said all that, please forgive me for hoping that one of his future opponents sprains his ankle, or breaks up with his girlfriend the night before, or just has a bad day. Because Ben really, really, needs a win.

Media Day for all-star teams set
The Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association's
annual All-Star
Classic will be held Saturday, June 8 at 1 p.m. at Norfolk Catholic
High
School's Burns Hall.
The NSWCA is giving all the media outlets in
the state a chance to preview
both teams in advance of the all-star event. Media days will be
held for
both teams at their respective training sites in North Bend and
Lexington.
The East team will have their media day on
Monday, June 3, at 3 p.m. at
North Bend High School. The West team's media day will be Tuesday,
June 4 at
1:30 p.m. at Lexington High School. Information on all the wrestlers
will be
available at each media site.
I'm coordinating both media days, so if you
could reply back to me and let
me know whether or not you plan on attending or having a representative
of
your staff attend, I would appreciate it.
Thanks and hope to see you at the media days and the All-Star Classic.
Yours in Wrestling,

NWI
Media Availability Prior to State Tournament
I've talked with several of you during the
course of the 2001-2002 wrestling
season, and just wanted to give you a heads-up on my availability
during the
week leading up to the state tournament.
I will be available for phone interviews Sunday
from Noon to 6 p.m. and all
day Wednesday. I will be bogged down with NWI and Gretna Guide
responsibilities all day Monday and Tuesday, but will be free
Sunday and
Wednesday if you are needing a pre-tournament interview.
Look forward to seeing all of you in Lincoln.
If you can't make it for the
tournament, make sure you keep track of it through the NWI website
at
http://www.nwimag.com.
Thanks again for all your support this season.
Yours in Wrestling,
Michael J. Carnes, E-Publisher

NEBRASKA
WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED TO SURPASS 100,000 DOWNLOADS NEXT WEEK
GRETNA, Neb. -- Two years ago, wrestlers, coaches
and fans in the state of
Nebraska were looking for a place they could go to get the kind
of wrestling
news and information they were looking for.
It was from that need that Nebraska Wrestling
Illustrated was born in the
spring of 2000. Now, less than two years later, NWI is about to
surpass a
rather dubious milestone as its 100,000th download is expected
to happen
next week.
As of Thursday afternoon, the magazine had
surpassed 90,000 downloads for
the season, which began with its college preview issue in early
November.
Not bad for a magazine that had just over 20,000 downloads all
of last year.
Michael Carnes, E-Publisher of NWI, said the
numbers are no longer a
surprise to him.
"When this first started taking off this
season, I had to rub my eyes and
look at the computer a second time, because I wasn't believing
what I was
seeing," he said. "But in the course of traveling all
over the state and
hearing from fans both in Nebraska and all over the world, the
numbers just
helped drive home the point that there is a need for wrestling
news and
information in Nebraska that we're providing in a fresh and unique
way."
Wrestling fans can access the NWI website at
http://www.nwimag.com. Each
issue is a .pdf (Portable Document Format) file that can be downloaded
off
the website. To read the magazine, users need to have Adobe Acrobat
Reader
installed on their computer or as a plug-in in their web browsers.
With the 2002 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament
on the horizon, Carnes
said the numbers on the website are expected to hit their peak
for the year.
"Last year, we had approximately 5,000
visitors per day during our
bracket-to-bracket coverage," he said. "If this year's
downloads are any
indicator, we should have well over 25,000 per day hitting the
site."
NEBRASKA WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED BREAKING RECORDS
GRETNA, Neb. -- Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated
broke new ground last week by
cracking the 10,000 mark in the weekly number of downloads of
its
e-magazine.
The 11,404 downloads of last week, however,
could pale in comparison to this
week's numbers, which are buoyed by a record-setting day of over
4,000
downloads of this week's issue.
Michael Carnes, E-publisher of the free electronic
magazine
(http://www.nwimag.com) said he's no longer surprised by the numbers
he sees
each week.
"After a while, you see the interest continue
to swell and it finally hits
you over the head and makes you realize just how much interest
there is in
wrestling in the state of Nebraska," he said. "There's
always a bit of a
skeptic in me that has come with my years in the journalism business,
but
the wrestling community has shown that they love this magazine
and can't
wait for the next issue to come out."
Through its first nine issues, NWI has been
downloaded over 60,000 times by
wrestling fans all over the world. Carnes said wrestling fans
as far away as
Austrailia have checked out the website and downloaded each issue
this
season.
"Unless there's a sudden breakdown of
the Internet, I see this magazine
being downloaded over 100 thousand times by the end of the summer,"
he said.
"I'm really pleased with the response this magazine has had
in its second
season and can't wait for the state tournament when the interest
really
kicks in."
Carnes said the magazine plans on expanding
its unique bracket-to-bracket
coverage of the tournament this year, with faster updates and
more news and
information on the tournament as it happens.
"We broke some unique ground on the Internet
last year with this coverage,
and this year we plan on adding more to it and getting the brackets
updated
even quicker than we did before," he said.
For more information about the magazine, go
to the NWI website at
http://www.nwimag.com or e-mail Carnes at mikeyc@nwimag.com.
NEBRASKA
WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED FLIES PAST 50,000 DOWNLOADS
GRETNA, Neb. - Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated's
growth as the state's best
source of wrestling news and information has helped it reach a
milestone
this week.
The magazine experienced its 50,000th download
on Thursday, just 1 1/2 years
after coming into existence as the state's first electronic magazine
covering high school, college and club wrestling in the Cornhusker
state.
"I'm very proud of what we have been able
to do for the wrestling community,
and the wrestling fans of this state continue to impress me with
their
support for this publication," said Michael Carnes, E-Publisher
of the
magazine. "If you'd have told me last year at this time that
we'd have
50,000 downloads before the halfway point in our second season,
I'd have
laughed. It's a great accomplishment and the wreslting community
should be
congratulated."
The magazine is a downloadable .pdf file that
can be read using Adobe
Acrobat Reader software, which is already installed on most computers.
From
there, fans can read up on the latest stories, get the state's
most
comprehensive list of dual and tournament results, and get the
state's only
media-based rankings with the NWI-Huskermat ratings.
The magazine is also on track to record its
first-ever week of 10,000
downloads, Carnes said. And there is more in store for the wrestling
community.
"We're going to do our state tournament
coverage again, and there are many
more surprises on the way," he said. "This is the kind
of coverage wrestling
fans have been asking for, and we're happy to be the ones giving
it to
them."

NWI-Huskermat Rankings
By Mike Carnes
Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated, in conjunction
with Huskermat.com, is
ranking the top teams and individuals in the four high school
classifications this year.
This is the first time a statewide media outlet
has ranked the top teams and
individuals in high school wrestling in Nebraska, and NWI-Huskermat
joins
the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association as the only
outlets to
rank high school wrestling in Nebraska.
I'd encourage you to go to our website at http://www.nwimag.com and use
our
rankings as a way to publicize the high school wrestlers in your
area, as
well as those of the NSWCA if you already receive them. My only
request is
that you credit NWI-Huskermat for these rankings so that your
readers will
be able to see the difference in those rankings and the NSWCA's.
If you have any questions or comments, please
e-mail me here or call

NEBRASKA
WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED BLOWING OUT LAST YEAR'S DOWNLOAD TOTAL
Contact: Michael J. Carnes, E-Publisher
mikeyc@nwimag.com
402-660-9682
GRETNA, Neb. - Last year, Nebraska Wrestling
Illustrated
(http://www.nwimag.com) made
its debut as the first statewide wrestling
publication on the Internet.
Through word of mouth and limited media coverage,
the magazine picked up
enough interest to translate into a little over 20,000 downlaods.
Michael Carnes, E-Publisher of NWI, said those
numbers have been dwarfed by
the download totals already established in the magazine's first
four issues
of the 2001-2002 season.
"I'm still in a sense of disbelief,"
he said. "The first day I looked at the
numbers on the statistics server, I thought that had to be wrong.
There
can't be that many people downloading this magazine, can there?"
As it turns out, there are.
>From Dec. 4 through the first day since
the fourth issue was posted on the
website, the magazine has been downloaded 13,155 times. The Dec.
5 issue has
been downloaded over 6,000 times in one week and the current issue
(Dec. 12)
has experienced over 2,500 downloads in less than 24 hours.
Carnes said he is positive the actual total
is closer to 25,000, as
technical problems prevented the magazine from accurately tracking
the
college and preview issue downloads during the month of November.
Those
issues were posted to the website on November 7 and November 28,
respectively.
"I have talked and read e-mails from many
wrestling fans in the state who
downloaded those issues back when they went up and were impressed
by them,
so I know that those numbers are higher. I just wish I knew EXACTLY
how high
they were," he said.
Carnes is projecting that the magazine will
experience well over 100,000
downloads during the season, and expects the total to be closer
to 200,000
by the end of the publication year next summer.
The magazine has added several items to its
agenda this year, including the
first media-based statewide rankings of teams and individuals.
Working with
Ross Halford of Huskermat.com, the first NWI-Huskermat rankings
were
published in this week's edition.
Carnes attributed the success of the magazine
to the wrestling community,
"which has been behind NWI from day one."
"The wrestlers, coaches and fans of this
state have been looking for a
statewide outlet for stories, results and photos, and I'm just
thrilled that
they are holding Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated in such high regard,"
he
said. "My hope is that we can continue providing the state's
best coverage
of high school, college and club wrestling now and in the future."
The magazine, downloaded as a .pdf file from
the website, is free to any and
all interested in the sport of wrestling. The magazine can be
downloaded
from the NWI website at http://www.nwimag.com.
Nebraska
Wrestling Illustrated Preseason Top 10
GRETNA - Nebraska Wrestling Illustrated,
(http://www.nwimag.com) has
announced its Preseason Top 10 for the 2001-2002 high school wrestling
season.
Three of the four defending state champions
- Omaha Skutt in Class B,
Aquinas in Class C and Rushville in Class D - start the year in
the top
spot. Papillion-LaVista, the 2001 Class A champion, is third behind
Millard
North and Lincoln East.
NWI is in its second full year of publication
and is publishing statewide
rankings for the first time this year, according to E-publisher
Michael
Carnes.
"For a number of years there has been
a lot of discussion about a statewide
media entity ranking teams each week during the season, much the
way it is
done in sports like football, basketball and soccer," Carnes
said. "We
decided this was a good time to do it, and it's a great discussion
piece for
wrestling fans all over the state."
The magazine is distributed as a .pdf (Portable
Document Format) on the
Internet and can be downloaded from the NWI website at
http://www.nwimag.com. For more information or to schedule an
interview,
call Michael Carnes, E-Publisher, at 402-660-9682 or e-mail
