I. National Prep Review: Blair won for the 25th year in a row finishing 174 points ahead of the second place team, Bishop Lynch, from Texas. Loomis placed 10th to lead the NE schools. Other top NE school places were Brunswick (15), TP (18), Brooks (22), and Tabor 25 in the 121 team field. Individual placers from NE were:

2nd Boyle Loomis 103
Mancuso TP 275

3rd Bilodeau Brooks 140

4th Powers Loomis 152

II. New England Championships Preview:

1. Team title - look for defending champ TP to battle with Loomis for the team title. Loomis would seem to have the edge based on the late season medical clearance of Bernstein at 215. Belmont Hill and host Brooks have an outside shot at the team title. Loomis won in 02-03-04

III. Scuttlebutt: Congrats to 4 X All American Mike Powers of Loomis he placed 4-6-2-3. NE had 133 of the 521 entries at the nationals. 4 NE wrestlers who were seeded 8th or better failed to place. Of the 13 NE wrestlers seeded 9-12 one, Bernstein of Loomis, ended up placing.

I. A Tourney - Congrats to Loomis on their championship. They placed 12 to cruise to their title. Their 259.5 points were a little shy of the mark they reached in 04 of 267.5 and short of the league record of 272 which is held by Exeter but they were in control after the first round. The battle for second and 4th places went back and forth with Exeter taking 2nd by 1.5 over NMH and Andover taking 4th by 1.5 over Tabor - both of those races came down to the place bouts at 275 ! Congrats also to Mike Powers for becoming a 4 X champ ! Hyde did a good job in hosting the event with only a slight scoring glitch which was corrected in a timely fashion. Next year's host is Exeter

II Other Leagues: Trinity Pawling and Belmont Hill won their league tourneys as expected.

1. TP 263 1. Belmont Hill 232.5
2. Brunswick 220 2. Roxbury Latin 211
3. Avon 178 3. Milton 185

III Nationals - The new qualifying and double elimination format will be interesting. Since NE has many more entries than other zones I expect we will see a lot of NE wrestlers meeting each other during the tournament. Lehigh has promised to separate our three champs as much as possible. Returning NE placers are: Bilodeau ( Brooks) 3rd last year and 2nd in 04. Powers (Loomis) 6th last year (injury), 2nd in 04, 3rd in 03, and Mancuso (TP) 7th in 05. Two transfers from NE Cournoyer and Mocco both now at Blair placed last year. In 05 NE had a tough tourney placing only 12 with Canterbury placing 18th and Loomis 20 to lead our team scores.

V Scuttlebutt: Congrats to Andover on their NNE tourney championship. In the NNE 1/2 of the schools entered had at least one champ. Loomis prevailed in the super quad with the only close match of the six that day being the LC-PEA match. Hard to believe but the dual meet season is over and it's TOURNAMENT TIME !! Loomis the clear favorite to win the 45th annual Class A Tournament. They look to have 4 easy champs and shots at 3 others. Exeter, Tabor, NMH, and Andover will battle for the 2-5 slots. Mike Powers of Loomis looks to win his 4th title and thus become the 5th four time champ and the first to do that since 2000. 171 is clearly the deepest weight class in the tourney. Since the turn of the century Loomis has won in 02,04, Exeter in 00,03, and NMH 01,05. Exeter leads the way in team titles with 16, Tabor has 10 with the last being in 1990, and NMH 6. Loomis joined the league in 1997 and has two titles.

V Scuttlebutt: Exeter makes the big jump in the standings by virtue of
their win over Tabor. NMH moves ahead of Andover because of their win
over the Blue. Some truisms in wrestling: got to make weight, individual
matchups are the keys in duals, never been a horse that couldn't be rode
nor a rider that couldn't be throwed, and you got to dance with the ones
you bring to the party ! Correction department - McFadden was 1-2 at the
Beast not 0-2. This week's quad at Exeter has been dubbed the Class A
super quad for years since it usually brings together 4 ranked teams and
this year is no different with #1,2,4,6 competing. Up to last year the
school that dominated the quad usually didn't win the A's but NMH
changed that last year. NNE tourney also turning into a good tuneup for
the A's. This year's NNE is at Tilton - look for Andover to take the
championship

VI: wrestlers competing in college: Exeter has Sheehan, Dolan, and
Ojukwu at Williams, Parziale at Hofstra, Sheehan at Nebraska and
Campbell at Wesleyan. Loomis has Moyet at NYU, Hern at Trinity, Glotzer
at UNH Club team, DeCampo at Muhlenberg, Lawrence at Washington & Lee,
Kreitman at WPI and Roddy - not sure what college. NMH has Kenny at
Wesleyan. Andover has Shvartsman at Duke. Choate has Marvin Smith at
Wesleyan and Williston has Uheyra there also.
Non league schools haas Featherstone from Salisbury at Oklahoma.

V Scuttlebutt: For the second year in a row Andover and SPS went to the tiebreaker to decide the match and this year Andover was the winner. Big matches this week involve league matches Tabor-Exeter, Andover-NMH, and non league matches Exeter-Milton, Exeter-RL, and Tabor-RL. Right now it looks like the NE champions will break down this way:
T-P (4), Loomis (4), Brooks(1) and the other 5 up for grabs. 171 looks to be the deepest weight class with at least 5 top quality guys from just the A's and Ct league. NE wrestlers currently competing in college: Stolpinski (Exeter - Navy), Chowdhury (Loomis-Wesleyean), Abell ( NMH-ODU), Wildes (Pomfret-Wesleyean). Coaches send me any additional ones you know about.

VI. Scuttlebutt: Loomis had a big week posting big wins over Andover ,
Belmont Hill, and Roxbury Latin. They have clearly showed they are the
team to beat in both the A's and the NE's and now that their lineup is
intact they are impressive.
My error last week in saying Loomis got revenge on TP. Loomis's only
loss was to St Benedict's not TP. Checking the certification sheets I
find that Stuer (PA - 189) is just a 9th grader - pretty impressive.
Blair #1 blew out St Ed's # 2 last week - I don't have the score but it
wasn't close. NMH has won 11 in a row with a big quad at WNH this
weekend with TP , Canterbury, and WNH. Exeter has 9 in a row. Tabor
regrouping after a long break and Andover licking it's wounds from last
week's losses to LC and BH. Individual rankings not perfect but getting
closer. Rankings will be affected by big duals that are left:
LC-PEA-DA-NMH quad, PEA-TA, PA-NMH, PA-PEA, WNH-CRH, WNH -LC and DA-WA

IV Scuttlebutt: Loomis beat TP to avenge their early season loss. Powers in the lineup for that match but no other matches that day. Big quad this Sat when # 1 Loomis and # 3 Andover join # 1 & 2 from the ISL league. The Andover-Deerfield match a real barn burner - the first 5 weights had two OT's and two one pointers with Andover winning 4 of 5 plus the great comeback win at 130. NMH & Exeter swapped rankings based on NMH's thumping of SPS who had defeated Exeter earlier in the year. Nice win for Worcester over Pomfret. I saw a great wrestling tattoo this week: it showed the 10 ' inner circle and the rectangle for the referees position - simple but sharp!

VI Scuttlebutt - Biggest news is Mocco leaving Exeter - tough break for
both parties. Coach Murphy started X mas early as he waived .3 lb and let
the WMA wrestler compete which ended up costing Hyde the match - WMA was
grateful. Loomis had a great dual with Brunswick - came down to the last
weight.
Tabor off to another great start - their win over BH raised some eyebrows
from the DA and NMH coach who were in the quad - Peddie cancelled due to
the weather. The number of Class A returning NE placewinners has to be an
all time low even though the A's had 4 teams in the top 10 last year tying
Ct. The A's also had 8 in the top 20 to lead all leagues. Must be we were
an "old" league last year !

IV Scuttlebutt: Powers and Mocco gunning for their 4th Class A title
(4 others have done it previously). Loomis is loaded and hopes, unlike last
year, to stay healthy for the entire season. In the last decade four
teams have won the league with NMH (4), Exeter (3), Loomis (2) and
Andover
(1). Loomis looking to keep their even number streak alive in the
2000's as they won the league in 02 and 04 and they are the preseason
favorite in 06. Andover or Tabor appear to be the most likely to step in if
Loomis falters while NMH hopes to make the top 3. Exeter's 6th last year, an
aberration for the 15 time team champ in the league's 43 year history,
was their worst finish since 1982 when they were 7th - look for them to
move into the the top 4 this year. Defending NE champ T-P is also
reportedly loaded and both teams will be at the Canterbury Tourney this
Sat. Look for Brunswick and Canterbur to challenge TP in that league
and the usual group of Belmont Hill, Roxbury Latin, Brooks, and St Pauls to
fight it out in the IISL league.

Class A Wrestling News
2004-2005 March 1, 2005
# 12

I. National Review: Blair's 25th consecutive title. NE represented by 30 schools and 135 wrestlers. All Class A schools were represented. NE's number of placers down from previous years which was a disappointment. Powers having to default after winning his _ final bout was probably our biggest disappointment.
Top NE teams: Canterbury (18), Loomis (20), TP (123) and Brooks (24)

II. Wrestlers of the Week: Chowdhury (LC), Powers (LC), Mocco (PEA)), and Adedokun (PA) for gaining All-American status at the Nationals.

III. NMH JV Tourney: 32 teams, 403 entries, 45 weight classes. Belmont Hill led the way with 5 champs while NMH, ConVal, and Farmington had 4, and Exeter, Andover, Deerfield, Nobles, and Pomfret each had three.

IV. New England Outlook: Hard tournament to figure. It looks like Canterbury a slight favorite. Loomis a question mark with Baker and Powers questionable. If Powers is there, will he be at 140 or 145? Brooks, BH, and TP should make a run at the title. Many schools have a few very good wrestlers who could win their weight class. Where will Roddy go152, 160, 171? Will we get the Mocco-Lapham matchup we hoped for at the Nationals? How about a Chowhury-Naczi matchup? Will Lee stay down at 171 or bump back up? Lots of questions - that's why we decide it on the mats and not on paper!

V. Returning NE Placewinners:

III. Wrestler of the Week: Moseley (Ti -135) ranked # 3 beat Shvartsman # 2, 9 6. Shvartsman 3rd in the A's last year and 4th in NE's.

IV. Scuttlebutt: Tilton's trio of Sawicki, Tsiaris, and Moseley seem to be feeding off each other and just getting tougher each week. Andover lost by criteria to SPS (greater number of 6 pt team wins) after Shvartsman tied the dual in the last weight wrestled. Brooks may have used a wrestler up two weight classes from weigh-ins vs Andover which would then make Andover the winner. SPS beat Brooks in an ISL showdown, but don't forget Belmont Hill. TP beat Canterbury 39-36 and NMH 36-34. Canterbury then beat NMH 47-27! Loomis lineup starting to get settled with tournament time approaching. Deerfield, Worcester, and Andover have quietly put together a very good season and appear to be peaking at the right time. Tabor in a long hiatus between matches, while Exeter and NMH still looking for some consistency.

CLASS A WRESTLING NEWS

2003-2004 February 25, 2004
#11

I. League Tourney Recap: Congrats to Loomis for their overwhelming team championship! Their wrestlers went 9/9 in the semi's and 8/9 in two finals, including 9 pins, 1 TF, and 3 MD! Loomis also won the team title in 2002. Their 8 champions are the most ever by a team followed by 6 which was done by Exeter teams of '64 and '90 and the Tabor squad of '76. Loomis team score of 267.50 is second to Exeter's winning total of 272 set in '00. Five of Loomis' champs were top seeds with two seeded 2nd, one seeded 4th.. The 86 point difference between 1st and 2nd place teams was close to the record 100 point spread in '00.

Choate challenged for three rounds and was only 2 points behind Loomis going into the semi finals, but they won only one of ten semi final matches which ended their challenge. Of Choate's nine losses, three were 2nd seeds, three 3rds, one 4th , and two 5ths. All nine wrestled back to place third (3), fourth (4), fifth (1), sixth (6).

There were 13 top seeds, 11 seconds, 3 thirds, and one fourth seed in the finals. Eleven champs were top seeds, two were a second seed, and one a fourth.

Runnersup were seeded second 10 times with two first seeds placing 2nd and two 3rd seeds.

Third place had five 3rd seeds, three 2nd seeds, three 4th seeds, one 1st , 5th, and 6th seeds.

Nine of the champs were seniors, one junior, three sophs, and one 9th grader. Nine seniors placed second, 2 juniors, 2 sophs, and one frosh were runnersup. Nine seniors were third, 3 juniors, one soph, and one frosh placed third.

Loomis returns 4 champs, 11, 10, 10, 9 grades. Four champs repeated and three have a shot at either three or four titles in '05 or '06.

The tourney ran very smoothly which is a credit to the Loomis host.

II. Nationals: Blair again the favorite to win their 20th plus consecutive team title. Returning NE placewinners are:

Powers, LC 135 3rd
Harger, BR 145 3rd
Cournoyer, SA 103 4th
Featherstone, Sal 171 4th
Mocco, PEA 152 6th
Wildes, Pom 130 7th
Uyehara, WNH 130 7th
Richardson, LC 145 7th

III. Roxbury Latin won the ISL League Tournament with Belmont Hill second and Brooks third.

III. Wrestler of the Week: Derron Richardson (LC-145) dropped down to 145 and beat top ranked Yanni-Lazarus (CRH) 13-7 and 4th ranked Halperin (NMH) 10-1. As a result, he should be # 1 seed in the A tournament.

IV. Scuttlebutt: Congrats to Tabor on their undefeated season! Kudos to Choate for their team title at the NNE Tourney. Speaking of the NNE, it seemed to run true to form except at 103 where Archambault (PA) upset top seeded Jurcan (Hy-M).
Loomis dominated "Big Quad Saturday". This was the event's 8th year and every year one school has won 3 matches on the day. It should be noted that the team who won all three matches on that day has not won the Class A Tourney the following week since 1998. Each time a different team in the "Big Quad" has won the A's.
The clear favorite this week will be Loomis. They appear to have four champs (Chowdhury, Feeley, Powers, and Richardson) plus three others who could also win (DeCampo, Lawrence, and Kreitman) and four others who should place top four.
However, before the trophy is given out, it's important to remember that for the last two years there's also been a clear favorite (LC '03 and NMH '02) and neither met the expectations on that day.
Should Loomis falter, Choate and Hyde-M seem to be the only ones who could win and both would need a perfect day from all their wrestlers and Loomis to have a down day. Choate doesn't appear to have a champ, so would need the top nine guys placing in the 2-3 spots to really challenge. Hyde could easily have 3 champs (103, 140, 215) but would need that plus big performances at 152, 171, and 189 in order to offset the team balance of Loomis and Choate.
Andover and Tabor will do well, but probably don't have enough depth to seriously challenge. Andover has two favorites and several others who could place high and they could sneak into second place. Tabor, while a solid dual meet team is probably a year away from challenging for the tournament title. They should be in the top 5 this year.
Exeter and NMH will not be in the team title hunt this year. Exeter with two individual favorites to win will end up as high as their other placers can take them look for a 3-5 placing while NMH with no high seeds and a limited number of placers will be hard pressed to finish in the top half of teams in the tourney.
152 is still looking like the deepest weight class as McCarthy of Tabor will probably enter at the weight to go with Mocco, Lawrence, Marvin-smith, MacKenzie and Wolstein.

III. Wrestler of the Week: Pat Sheehan (PEA-171) moved up two weight classes and pinned Buzzell (Hyde-M 215). Both wrestlers are ranked # 1 in their respective weight classes. Sheehan, I believe, is a former NE public school champ.

IV. Scuttlebutt: Andover does it again ! Their great win over Brooks now gives them victories over the top ranked teams in the A's and the ISL !! Congratulations to them. Harbour out of Tilton lineup last weekend. Chowdhury still missing at LC so it must be something serious and now has to start affecting the seeds for the league tourney. LC bumped several guys up a weight class or two last weekend as did Exeter which serves as a reminder about keeping the lowest weight certification - you can weigh in one class above your certified weight and then wrestle two classes above the certified weight class, but if you weigh in two classes above you automatically lose the lower certification and move up one weight class for certification. Looks like NMH may have lost two starters, injuries, for the season. Jurcan out of Hyde-M lineup last weekend. Next week shaping up as a big one relative to seeding with Tabor-Exeter, Loomis-Exeter, Choate-Loomis duals plus the NNE tourney at Tilton.

III. Wrestler of the Week: This week's winner is Ben Yanni-Lazarus (CRH-145). He picked up 7 individual wins last week for the hard charging Wild Boars. Included in his victories were a 7-5 win over Mathis (Hy-M) who was 3rd in NE last year and a 4-3 win over Halperin (NMH) who was a Class A runnerup. Ben placed 3rd in A's at 160 last year.

IV. Scuttlebutt: Loomis is definitely showing the effects of being without key people. In their criteria loss to Pomfret they were missing Chowdhury and Feeley and in their loss to Andover they were without Chowdhury and Kreitman. Chowdhury has been out for at least two weeks. Bottom line is you gotta dance with the ones you bring, not the ones you left behind!!
Mocco of Exeter another big name who has been absent for a long time. Exeter took a skeleton crew to the Timberlane Tourney with no notable performances.
Look out for Choate! They are a solid, veteran team with high expectations. They return 5 league placewinners, 3 NE placewinnners and one All American. Their schedule doesn't show Exeter, Loomis or Tabor but others schedules indicate they will wrestle those schools - hope so since it would be difficult to seed the Class A Tourney without head to head matches.

Tabor continues to quietly stay undefeated as their young squad stays focused. Their matches with PEA, LC, and CRH will tell us more about them.
Hyde-M experiencing some shifting of personnel and some medical situations, so it's hard to figure them out on a weekly basis. With their best lineup in place they are a solid dual meet and tournament team.
Andover another team hard to figure out. Their win over Loomis but their loss to Tabor - matchups probably.
PCD has a full lineup which is very good news. NMH continues to win with a very thin lineup (one guy per weight for first 5 weights) and they look like a pretty good dual meet team, but their tournament abilities are questionable at this point.
Lastly, having missed just three matches in 40 previous seasons of coaching, it felt odd to be away last Saturday. I hope it's something I don't get used to !!
