NE Wrestling Tournament Results
New England Wrestling WrapThe Dirigo wrestler reached the pinnacle by adcvancing to the 145-pound finals at the New England championships in Massachusetts on Saturday night. The dream season came up short, however, Smith and the Maine wrestlers definitely proved they belonged on the upper stage.
The competition is always intense and the crowded brick-made Lowell high Gymnasium provided a unique back drop for the unpredictable. Still, Maine advanced nine individuals in to the semi-finals Saturday morning and five finalists and 12 medalists was the most since the Pine Tree state rejoined NEs in 1999.
Smith’s quest had begun with a pair of wins the previous night which provided even greater confidence. In the first round, Smith recorded a 17-5 major decision and then pinned his opponent in the quarterfinals.
“Jon’s performance was outstanding,”Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said. “He completely dominated his first three opponents. In the first match those seven takedowns really helped show how (aggressive) he was on the mat.”
The following morning the Cougar three-time state champion again went on the offensive and utilized leg moves in the SF for a 19-3 technical fall against New Hampshire state champion Jarad Smith of Timberlane.
“After semi finals I was feeling very confident knowing that the Timberlane kid was a very good wrestler,”Smith said. “I went back to the hotel after and relaxed after a good meal. I tried not to think about the match very much because that was just going to make me more nervous. Of course it was hard not to think about being the New England finals, but I managed.”
In the finals, Smith encountered a different style was unable to gain control and eventually lost a 6-3 decision to Derek Fish of Connecticut. After the first period the score was 0-0. Fish chose neutral and executed the first takedown going out of bounds and Smith quickly escaped off the whistle. With five seconds left Smith tried a head and arm and it slipped, so Fish got a takedown to end the period at 4-1.The Cougar senior (46-1) finished his career with a school-record 153 wins.
“Jon was never able to get in to his game,”Gilbert said. “He wasn’t able to get in on the leg’s because (Fish) wrestled defensively. It forced Jon to try and push the issue and he ended up making mistakes that he hadn’t made all season long.”
The Canton resident had been challenged to earn a medal by former Dirigo All American Dan Waite (171) who placed fourth in the 2000 New England.
Maine champions were Carlin Dubay 103 of Caribou and Kote Aldus 160 of Belfast. Dubay is the first-ever by a Viking and Aldus is the first Lion since Dennis Sprague won NE in 1970. Josh Eon 171 Massabesic and Nate Lavallee 285 of Cape Elizabeth also were finalists. Eon lost a heart-breaking 5-4 decision.
Sam Webber of Mount Blue had won a match in the first round, but then lost twice. It was disappointing ending for Webber who had placed fifth in NE last year.
Forrest Cornell 103 of Lisbon had the hardest trek after having to win two matches on Friday night. The freshman pinned Massachusetts champion Nick Flannery in the first round.
In pigtails (non-team scoring) matches, Derek Daley of Dirigo and Marcus Bubar of Lisbon each lost decisions. Daley was out muscled 10-1 and eliminated from the tournament. Bubar had tied his bout, but lost 4-2 in overtime.
Other Maine medalists included third place by Jacob Berry 145 of Camden Hills and Travis Spencer 189 of Belfast; fourth by Chris Smith 119 of Deering and Joe Eon 140 of Massabesic; fifth by Matt DelGallo 112 of Gardiner; sixth by Cinjin Goeway 135 of Maine Central Institute and Raistlin Delisle 215 of Kennebunk.
Timberlane, NH scored 73 points to win the team championship for its second in three years over Mount Anthony, VT 64.5. Belfast nipped host Lowell for third place 48.5 to 48 and Massabesic was eighth with 38. The Lions is the best finish by a Maine team since Rumford was fourth in 1977. Trevor Deardon of Salem, NH and Robert Hamlin of Mount Mansfield, VT both won their third New England title. Both Deardon, was named outstanding wrestler and Hamlin were immediately inducted into the New England Wrestling Hall of Fame for their accomplishment.

2008 JV New England Wrestling Championships @ Tabor Academy
Feb. 23, 2008
Early Saturday morning, twenty-two Hyde wrestlers left for a three-and-a-half hour ride to Marion, Massachusetts. With the Hyde-CT campus bringing 23 grapplers, between the two schools we had just under a sixth of the over 300 competitors. Although no team scores were kept in this New England JV Championship, the Phoenix certainly had one of the more successful days; out of the 30 schools represented, we came home with eight place-winners: Champions Britt Irwin '09 and Alex Furth '09; 2nd Place Finalists Joel Isola '09 and Owen Bogart '09; 3rd Place Finisher Pat Forenza '08; and 4th Placers Chad Bolster '11, Alex Hencin '11, and Tim Cameron '09.
As coach, it has been rewarding to see the team finally come together with a sense of purpose for our final meet of the season. Our cause was helped by Varsity Seniors Dylan Gardner '08, Robert McCullohs '08, and Kyle Rieger '08; although their season had concluded, throughout this past week, they have used their combined 17 years of experience to serve as assistant coaches as well as mentors who shared how the sport had changed and shaped their lives. Though 4th-year wrestler Steve Schultheis '08 has been unable to compete all season, he has enthusiastically served as a knowledgeable student coach throughout the winter. Injury and illness prevented others from concluding their season on the mat; just the same, Matt Borish '09, Dave Hanzelik'09, Max Leiva '10, Matt Mirabella '08, and Stefan Wolff '09 were also there by their teammate's side. Bryan Kemp '09, although not a team member has distinguished himself by going above and beyond this season; for the past month, Bryan has practiced with the team when it did not conflict with swimming, just to learn a new sport, and all day Saturday he supported the wrestlers through taking pictures of them in action.
With wrestling on five mats, we often had more than one wrestler competing at the same time, requiring all the help of the senior leaders. First and foremost, Mark Green '08 made the decision in December to return to the JV team; throughout these three months, his steady voice and consistent effort earned him the respect of the team. A senior who changed from skiing to wrestling this year as a personal challenge, Patrick Forenza '08 led Saturday with his ever-present heart. Over the final weeks of the season, three wrestlers exhibited the dedicated work ethic to lower their body weight to a more healthy and competitive class: Trevor Castor '08, Mark Green '08, and Chip Wohlstetter '11, while heavyweights Tim Cameron '09 and SJ Lee '08 significantly improved their weight mass and skill but could not quite get down to the 215-pound class. Showing true potential as wrestlers to watch in the future, Owen Bogart '09 and Alex Furth '09 maintained a positive momentum from their excellent work ethic in practice to place highly on Saturday. Though he could not compete over the last three weeks due to a persistent cough, Dave Hanzelik '09 has a significant upside on the mat and never stopped supporting his team.
Although they came to the team in January, we also observed noticeable growth and winning attitudes in Joe Balzano '09, Kevin Bligh '09, Nic Hartley '09, and Max Leiva '10. Zoe Dorian '10 and Henry Zhu '10 each displayed a mental toughness which cannot be coached and which will serve them well as lightweights of the future. The freshman class of 2011 has several tough competitors who will be heard from in the coming three years: Chad Bolster, Alex Hencin, Mac McGuire (FLC this weekend), and Chip Wohlstetter. Joe Phillips '08 and Derek Corey '09 showed up with a willingness to learn every day. Although inconsistent in effort and attitude, Braxton Billings '09, Austin Doyle '09, Pierce Maguire '09, and Matt Waly '10 have the athletic prowess if not the discipline to become solid wrestlers. When Stephen Kakouris '09 is at his best, he can be a handful for his opponent due to his wiry body and tough spirit.
And when it seemed the day could not be more special, the entire bus of 31 wrestlers, 2 coaches, and the driver was hosted by Bill Barrett, Kathy & Kevin Bligh (Kevin '09) for a multi-course buffet ranging from roast beef to homemade casseroles. Kathy, whose house we descended upon, commented: "I cannot believe nearly 40 people were here, as the place was so clean." The Furth family of Linda Goodale, Tom, and brother Andrew (Alex '09) donated a huge cake celebrating the Phoenix season. In addition, the Furths were joined by Michelle Champoux and Brian Bogart (Owen '09) both at the meet and at dinner. Lee Schultheis drove the long way so that Steve '08 could both finish the season with his team and participate in the final and 8th FLC. Finally, Greg, Leslie & brother Matthew Bolster (Chad '11) drove the furthest to complete their season-long support.

Hyde-ME Team Report from a Teammate's Perspective
While it was difficult to not be able to participate in his final tourney due to illness,
Senior Matt Mirabella '08 voluntarily followed individual stories throughout the day. This is his report,
the majority of which is in his own words, with some editing by Coach Barron.
Joe Balzano '09 - 145 pounds
1st Match: Roxbury Latin School (W. Roxbury, MA)
Joe let his opponent score a quick takedown, sending him to his back on the mat. After a valiant struggle, he was pinned.
2nd Match:
While Joe has shown promise as a wrestler this season, this was not his day to demonstrate all that he has learned. A team man, Joe stayed supportive of his teammates after his day as a competitor had ended.
Kevin Bligh '09 - 171 pounds
1st Match: Phillips Andover Academy (Andover, MA)
Intensity, strategy, and tact all headlined Kevin's match. Using grace and speed to throw reversals while waiting for subtle opportunities describes Kevin's wrestling style perfectly. Kevin is full of heart and always tangles for control. His first match ended in a loss, but the team was anxious to see more.
2nd Match:
Kevin's second match spoke to who he is and his attitude towards wrestling. He fought hard, scoring points from a near pin victory left Kevin up on the scoreboard. He then scored again after taking his opponent to the mat in another close effort to pin. In the middle of the second period, mid-move, he was reversed and taken to his back. He lost by pin in his second upset after an intense match.
Owen Bogart '09 - 135 pounds
1st Match: BYE (advancement to semi-finals)
2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals: Loomis Chaffee (Windsor, CT)
In an amazing display of speed and determination, Owen's match was a pleasure to watch. He beat his opponent by a score of 11 to 8 at the end of the third period. His match was a constant battle for control on the mat, with Owen setting the tone with two first-period takedowns, maintaining the attack in the second period, with Owen eventually outlasting his opponent.
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Northfield Mt. Hermon School (Northfield, MA) - 2nd Place
With both wrestlers scoring reversals and takedowns, it was a tight match. Everyone watching was on the edge of their seat, cheering on Owen, watching as he fought to gain control. Owen began the scoring with a single leg takedown, then his opponent reversed to tie the score at 2-all. In the second stanza, the NMH man earned another reversal but could not score further. The match went to the third period, Owen refusing to be pinned, earning an escape but giving up a takedown, suffering a loss by points (6-3) after an amazing, intense match. He came away with a 2nd-place medal and a sense of well-earned pride.
Chad Bolster '11 - 125 pounds
1st Match: Roxbury Latin School (W. Roxbury, MA)
Chad wrestled hard, never stopping or giving the other wrestler a break to catch his breath. Fighting his way out of near fall pins, turning off his back with a great deal of effort describes how Chad's season has been defined by his "you-can't-pin-me" attitude. In the end, Chad suffered a loss by points, after a hard and well-balanced match.
[Bolster > Continued] Consolation Semi-Finals: Hyde-CT
This match presented a challenge both to Chad - as well as to Coach Kemp, as his daughter Morgan '08 was the CT opponent! Chad came out aggressively, securing a 35-second first period pin.
3rd Match, Consolation Finals: Pembroke School (public school in MA) - 4th Place
Chad's match was amazing, and his "you-can't-pin-me" attitude reared its head once again. He was constantly moving, and fighting his opponent for control. At the end of the last two rounds, Chad found himself about to win by pin, his opponent's back on the mat, only to be cut off by the clock twice. In the end, the scoreboard read 8 to 7, Chad taking a disappointing loss.
Tim Cameron '09 - 285 pounds
1st Match: Loomis Chaffee School (Windsor, CT)
Tim fought hard in a heavyweight match against a very large opponent. Control was back and forth, but Tim would not be bested. The action went to the ground and Tim walked away victoriously after a first [Cameron > continued] period pin. After watching the match, Dylan Gardner stated, "Tim has optimized what it means to be a coachable athlete this season." Not to mention this was Tim's first victory!
2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals: St. Paul's School (Concord, NH)
Wrestling in the 215-285 pound class means not all opponents come in the same size and shape. Tim, who weighed in at 227 lbs., encountered one of his larger foes and succumbed to the St. Paul's grappler's first period body lock.
3rd Match, Consolation Semi-Finals: Loomis Chaffee School (Windsor, CT)
Tim continued to inspire through his newfound belief in himself, securing a takedown and a near fall before clinching the win with a first period pin.
4th Match, Consolation Finals: Phillips Andover Academy (Andover, MA) - 4th Place
One of the few to compete four times on the day, Tim fell behind 5-0 in the 1st, but unlike earlier in the season, he refused to be pinned. In the second, however, he could not hold off the Andover attack.
Trevor Castor '08 - 171 pounds
1st Match: St. Paul's School (Concord, NH)
Trevor came out wrestling with heart. His match was great and fun to watch, and the cheering never stopped. While control was always back and forth, Trevor threw plenty of reversals, twists and spins. It was disappointing to see Trevor suffer a loss by pin.
2nd Match: Hyde-CT (Woodstock, CT)
Entering the match ready to do battle, Trevor earned the first points, but his CT opponent reversed to tie it up at 2 going into the second period. CT chose neutral, earned a quick takedown and put Trevor's shoulders to the mat. One of Trevor's successes this season was getting closer to his natural weight.
Derek Corey '09 - 152 pounds
1st Match: Hyde-CT
Derek wrestled timidly, scoring a few escapes and turnovers. He lost by pin, but his technique has constantly improved throughout the season. With more intensity on the mat, Derek can better some tough opponents.
2nd Match: Pembroke School (Pembroke, MA)
Giving up a quick takedown to his opponent resulted in Derek being at a disadvantage. Struggling hard to get off his back unsuccessfully, Derek walked off the mat with a loss by pin in the first period after his opponent's well-executed Peterson roll.
Zoe Dorian '10 - 103 pounds
1st Match: Forfeit by St. Sebastian's School (Needham, MA)
Zoe walked off the mat earning the victory in a unique way. She came out ready to wrestle, all 97 pounds strong, with our entire team around the mat cheering her on. We were surprised when her opponent forfeited, as his all-male school does not let their athletes wrestle females. [Note: The New England Independent School Constitution has an amendment authored by Coach Barron in 2003 mandating that schools allow females to compete. Formerly, if the school objected to competing against a woman, their wrestler would win by forfeit. Only a few all-male schools now refuse to compete head-to-head.]
2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals: Roxbury Latin School (W. Roxbury, MA)
Zoe came out prepared to fight, flouting heart and intensity. Her unique spirit on the mat contributed to the atmosphere, along with our team cheering her on. The match was a privilege to watch, as her opponent matched her in skill and speed. He held control for a majority of the match, although Zoe threw some impressive reversals. In the end, she took a loss by points, but never gave up.
3rd Match, Consolation Semi-Finals: Milton Academy (Milton, MA)
After a valiant struggle in a back-and-forth match, Zoe lost by points once again. She and her opponent both fought hard, each seeking victory. At the end of the match, the scoreboard read 3 to 4 in a close but disappointing loss. Despite the loss, Zoe was one of a few Hyde grapplers to not lose by pin today.
Pat Forenza '08 - 160 pounds
1st Match: Deerfield Academy (Deerfield, MA)
Pat took a quick victory, coming out with heart and intensity. He scored a fast takedown on his unsuspecting opponent. After rolling his opponent to his back, Pat won by pin in about 20 seconds.
2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals: Governor's Academy (Byfield, MA)
Pat's match was an intense back and forth struggle between him and his opponent. Both were matched evenly; it was hard to watch his opponent walk away with a 6-4 win. Had there been another second on the clock, Pat's final takedown would have sent the match into overtime.
3rd Match, Consolation Semi-Finals: Williston Northampton School (Easthampton, MA)
Pat stepped on the mat with fire and intensity, ready to battle. He quickly took control, dominating his opponent with speed and skill. His well poised and perfectly executed moves led to Pat running a perfect half and winning by pin.
4th Match, Consolation Finals: Deerfield Academy (Deerfield, MA) - 3rd Place
Pat earned the first takedown, but could score no further in the opening frame. In the second period, Pat threw his opponent into a headlock which he squeezed relentlessly until his opponent gave in. Amazingly, today's 3 victories were Pat's only ones this season, after an 0-12 record at 145 and 152.
Alex Furth '09 - 215 pounds
1st Match: Middlesex School (Concord, MA)
Intensity, skill and speed describe Alex's wrestling style, and he brought all three to his match. He ended it quickly, taking down his opponent and pinning him in approximately 20 seconds.
2nd Match: Belmont Hill School (Belmont, MA)
Alex fought an amazing battle against a hard opponent. After being down by 5, he came back last minute with his signature pancake. After thoroughly tossing his opponent, he took another win by pin.
[Furth] CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: St. Sebastian's School (Needham, MA) - 1st Place Champion
The first period kicked off with intensity, both wrestlers fighting for control. As the period continued, Furth dominated with strength and poise. After rolling his opponent into a standing cradle, he quickly kicked out. Alex continued to run a reverse half and got chest-to-chest to win by pin in the first period.
Captain Mark Green '08 - 189 pounds
1st: Moses Brown School (Providence, RI)
Heart and intensity were the two defining words for Mark's first match. Mark threw his opponent around and dominated to the very end. After a quick reversal that left Mark fighting from his back, he fell by pin with one second left on the clock.
2nd Match, Consolation Semi-Finals: St. Paul's School (Concord, NH)
Mark came to the mat and fought hard. The first round was a real test, and Mark was ready for it, scoring amazing reversals and performing perfect bridges. He controlled the second period, executing some great moves. The third period also was Mark's, and the intense battle helped Mark recover from being 9 points behind to tie it at 14 to 14 at the end of the third period. The match went into an intense overtime, with the entire team crowded around, cheering loudly. After getting points to tie the match and recovering from 3 very close pins, Mark lost, giving up back points. The match ended with both teams complimenting each other on great effort and sportsmanship. As captain, Mark could not have left a better example on the mat.
Nic Hartley '09 - 130 pounds
1st Match: Phillips Exeter Academy (Exeter, NH)
Nic battled hard against a fierce opponent. The opposing grappler quickly took control, dominating Nic on the mat. The fight went to the ground, and his opponent maintained control, executing moves well enough to pin Nic in the second period.
2nd Match: Loomis Chaffee School (Windsor, CT)
Despite entering the match with a positive attitude, Nic fell behind quickly and fell in the first period. For a wrestler who joined the team late in the season, Nic steadily improved in effort and technique.
Alex Hencin '11 - 130 Pounds
1st Match: BYE
2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals: Hyde-CT (Woodstock, CT)
Not prepared for his opponent's aggressiveness, Alex gave up an early takedown, falling quickly to the attack from his Hyde brethren.
3rd Match, Consolation Semi-Finals: Tabor Academy (Marion, MA)
Alex walked out more ready to wrestle. His shift in attitude and mental preparation enabled him to score. He took a win in his second match by points, the scoreboard reading 7 to 2 at the end of the third period.
4th Match, Consolation Finals: St. Mark's School (Southborough, MA) - 4th Place
Alex showed impressive concentration in his warm-up. He gave up a takedown in each period; still he was behind only 6-0 before allowing a pin near the end of the match. Two wins today for this freshman!
Britt Irwin '09 - 130 pounds
1st Match: St. Sebastian's School (Needham, MA)
Dominating, controlling, and poised are 3 key words to describe Britt's first match. He owned his opponent and the pace of the wrestling, walking off the mat victoriously, pinning his opponent in the first period.
[Irwin > continued] 2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals: Tabor Academy (Marion, MA)
Both wrestlers came out with the fire and heart, looking for the win. The competition was hard, and the match quickly came to a deadlock. Both wrestlers displayed amazing skill and speed, but Britt overtook his opponent and walked away with victory.
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Deerfield Academy (Deerfield, MA) - 1st Place Champion
Britt and his opponent walked out ready to battle it out for victory. Intensity flared throughout the ring, control constantly switching between the wrestlers. At the very end of the first period, Britt was on top of his opponent, a second away from winning by pin, but the clock struck first. The match continued, and Britt took clear control throughout the second period, wrestling with confidence. At the end of the second period, Britt found himself in the same position, his opponent's back to the mat once again, with the period ending seconds before the pin. By the end of the third period in this well-fought match, Britt came out with gold, the scoreboard rightfully reading Britt 12, his opponent 0. Hyde-ME's first champion on this afternoon!
Joel Isola '09 - 112 pounds
1st Match: BYE (advancement due to less than 8 participants in the bracket)
2nd Match: Buckingham Browne and Nichols (Cambridge, MA)
Joel had a dominating first match, never losing control. There was not a single second throughout the match where he questioned his ability to win, throwing his opponent around with style and ease. His skill and endurance helped him walk off the mat with a win.
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Belmont Hill (Belmont, MA) - 2nd Place
It was an amazing back and forth match between Joel and his opponent. Joel maintained control with takedowns and poise, displaying control and skill. Unfortunately, Joel eventually lost control of the match, losing by pin in the second period.
Steve Kakouris '09 - 135 pounds
1st Match: Pembroke School (Pembroke, MA)
Steve earned the initial takedown before his man reversed him. Each traded reversals and, with the opponent on top, Steve fell to a pinning combination in the first period.
2nd Match: St. Sebastian's School (Needham, MA)
Facing an equally matched opponent, Steve hung in there for 3 periods. After Steve scored first, his man reversed him and scored a 3-point near fall. In the ensuing two period, both traded reversals, with Steve scoring in the 2nd period to close the score to a 5-4 deficit; the St. Seb wrestler's final points resulted in a disappointing 7-4 finale to Steve's up-and-down season.
SJ Lee '08 - 285 pounds
1st Match: St. Sebastian's School (Needham, MA)
Like Tim, SJ was also underweight for the heavyweight class. Nonetheless, SJ wrestled with solid technique, hitting the mat hard. He struggled from the mat against an opponent who was evenly skilled as him. SJ ended up losing after being put on his back for a pin.
2nd Match: Loomis Chaffee School (Windsor, CT)
SJ fell by pin to a heavyweight from Loomis Chaffee, taking him out of the tournament. SJ stepped onto the mat with confidence, sound technique, and courage, but was put on the mat once more. His heart was not overshadowed by his loss, and he walked off the mat prepared to support his team.
Pierce Maguire '09 - 189 pounds
1st Match: Williston Northampton School (Easthampton, MA)
Slow but steady describes Pierce's wrestling style. He scored a few takedowns, and kept control throughout the match, running up the score. After taking control on the scoreboard and on the mat, Pierce won by points, walking away with his first victory of the season.
2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals
Despite his early success, Pierce could not sustain his winning ways, falling by first period pin.
3rd Match: St. Mark's School (Southborough, MA)
Pierce has a good attitude toward wrestling, which will help going into next season, but today he was overmatched in strength and skill by his third opponent.
Joe Phillips '08 - 140 pounds
1st Match, Pigtail (wrestle into 8-man bracket): St. Sebastian's (Needham, MA)
While taking a loss in the opening match of the tournament, Joe really showed the team something special. The spirit of a Hyde wrestler came out, and he fought through the hardest match he had all season. Unfortunately, the match was a pigtails match (a win is needed to qualify to compete in the actual tournament), and we didn't think we'd get to see Joe wrestle again. A positive attitude and "unbeatable" outlook have defined Joe lately, and he has been carrying the team with his spirit in practice.
2nd Match: Hyde-CT (Woodstock, CT)
To our surprise, Joe got another shot, as by mistake he was listed in two of the 140-pound weight classes! This time he wrestled a Hyde-CT grappler; coming out with a fighting spirit and AMAZING intensity, Joe controlled his match. Throwing well-executed moves with poise and confidence led to an excellent first period pin, with Joe the victor. Score one for perseverance.
3rd Match, Championship Semi-Finals:
Joe gave it his best shot, but he fell short to a more skilled opponent.
4th Match, Consolation Semi-Finals: Pembroke School (Pembroke, MA)
Joe faced a fierce opponent who wasted no time in throwing him face first into the mat. Joe wrestled with confidence, but was left at a disadvantage when his opponent rolled him. Battling off his back with pride eventually led to a crushing loss for Joe, but he was a pleasure to watch throughout the tournament.
Matt Waly '10 - 171 pounds
1st Match: Governor's Academy (Byfield, MA)
Coming in with intensity and spirit helped Matt take control of his match. He immediately sent his opponent to the mat, and dominated him with strength and skill. Matt maintained control and performed well-executed moves to walk away with a win.
2nd Match, Championship Semi-Finals:
Matt's focus failed him, as he was not as prepared as his opponent for this winner's bout.
3rd Match, Consolation Semi-Finals: Match: Roxbury Latin School (W. Roxbury, MA)
In an intense and evenly balanced match, Waly and his opponent were constantly fighting for control. Waly came out with fire, attacking hard to score the first takedown, then trading reversals, but his opponent was a match for him. In a display of skill and a great series of moves, his opponent took control and Matt suffered a third period loss by pin.
Chip Wohlstetter '11 - 189 pounds
1st Match: Phillips Exeter Academy (Exeter, NH)
Chip came out poised and ready to wrestle, after rehearsing diligently what his first move would be. He was wrestling in the 189 weight class after working hard to drop weight for the tournament. His match was intense; after dropping to the mat, his opponent nearly pinned him. In the third period, the action instantly hit the ground once again. His opponent maintained control on the top. Chip fought hard, reversing every near pin, but to the entire team's loss, he couldn't take home the win.
2nd Match, Pembroke School (Pembroke, MA)
After a scoreless first frame, his opponent scored 3 near falls for a 9-0 advantage, but could not put Chip's proud shoulders to the mat. As a freshman, Chip has a promising future on the mat.
Henry Zhu '10 - 119 pounds
1st Match: Belmont Hill School (Belmont, MA)
Henry is a fighter on the mat. Since joining our team, he has always been a force to be reckoned with and a tough opponent. Even if he doesn't know what move to run in a situation, he never stops moving. Although he suffered a loss, his opponent definitely had to work hard for the victory.
2nd Match: Williston Northampton School (Easthampton, MA)
Henry faced another skilled opponent and, while he fought off his back in the first period, he succumbed to another attack in the second period.

Class A Tourney Recap: Great hosting job by Andover. NMH's title was their 7th in school history. The seeding committee was very accurate: First seeds won the championship 10 times; 4 second seeds won the title. 27 of the 28 finalists were seeded either # 1 or 2. One 4 seed (Parish) made the finals. 7 third placers were seeded 3rd while 3 four seeds and 2 five seeds placed 3rd. Highest place by a non seed was 3rd by Langton (NMH215). As forecasted last week Tabor moved up considerably from last year (8th to 4th) but Choate showed the biggest improvement (10th to 5th) while Exeter and Hyde-Me slipped the most (1st-7th) and (7th to 13th). Andover and Loomis 2nd and 3rd for the second year in a row. Andover returns 12 of their 13 entries (Cintron a senior) so they are the early favorites for 2009. Loomis returns 9 of 14 with 5 of those being 9th graders so they will remain strong in the near future. NMH graduates 9 as does Tabor. 5 champs will return next year. 8 different schools had at least one champ.

Nationals Preview: Blair as usual the favorite - they have won the team title 27 years in a row! There are actually two team titles with Blair's all being for the overall team with PG's and when that happens there is also a team title for non PG teams. I'm not sure who won the HS title last year (might have been Blair with no PG's) but Bishop Lynch from Tex won it in in 05 and 06. Along with those two look for Wyoming Seminary, Germantown, McDonough, and St. Benedict's to be the top teams this year. The top NE returner is Palmer (TP-140) who was 6th; LaBeef (130-Pomfret) and Napoleon (RL 189) were both 8th. LaBeef is a 2 X 8th place. Last year Brooks (14th), BH ( 22nd), Pomfret (22nd), NMH (25th) and TP (25th) led the NE teams. NE was represented by 34 schools and 131 wrestlers in the field of 123 schools and 534 wrestlers. NE had 12 All Americans (one champ). -Frank Millard, NMH

V. Scuttlebutt: In the NNE tourney the only surprise champ was Calandra
(LCA) over Lovely (HM). WA won with 2 champs and 4 runnerups while PA
had 4 champs and 1 runnerup. PA met WA in the finals from 171-215 and
swept those matches. Making weight ramifications: boy misses weight this
past Sat by 1.4 lbs - using that weight and the descent plan of 1.5 % a
week he is ineligible to wrestle his lowest weight on Wed by .05 - I
predict mid week matches will continue to disappear. This past Sat was a
nice day of highlighting wrestling and coach Millard's last dual meets
of his 45 year career. The visiting teams were gracious as were their
coaches - great school dinner afterwards for 175 former wrestlers,
current wrestlers and many parents. Final dual meet record for Millard
718 - 204-3 Look for Brunswick and TP to do their annual battle in WNE
with Brunswick the favorite. Belmont Hill should win the Graves Kelsey
but Roxbury and Nobles have an outside shot.
VI Class A Tournament. This event started in 1962 with 8 schools and
grew to 17 schools in 1991 and seems to finally have settled at 14. 24
different schools have been members at one time or another. Exeter has
won the event a league leading 17 times including 5 straight from 85-89.
From 85-96 they won 5, lost one, won 3 lost one won 2. Exeter's last
championship was in 2007. Tabor is second with team wins with 9
including a 5 year run from 72-76. Tabor's last title was in 1990. NMH
is next with 6 team titles with their last championship being in 2005.
Eight different schools have won at least one championship - in addition
to the three previously mentioned : Hyde - M (4), Loomis (3), Andover
(3), GDA (2), and Deerfield (1). There have been four 4 X champs
(Pritchett -PEA), Roche (DA), Greenberg (HM) and Stolpinski (PEA).
Stolpinski was the last in 2000 - he is currently # 7 in the NCAA D-1
for Navy. There have been twelve 3 X champs. The top 3 placers in each
weight class qualify to enter the nationals - some 4th placers may get
in via the wild card route. Top 4 placers qualify to the New England's.
Looking at the last 10 years to find the 6 most consistent teams (6 pts
for 1st, 1 pt for 6th place:
1. PEA 42 4. PA 31
NMH 42 5. WMA 14
3. LC 35 6. DA 10

6. HC 128 13. PCD 15.5
7. HM 123.5 14. WMA 3

IV Scuttlebutt: This will be the 11th year of the Class A Super Quad
(NMH, LC, PEA, DA) and in every year but one the Class A Champion has
come out of this group. The NNE tourney will be at Hyde in Maine and it
should be an interesting team race between Andover, the favorite, and
Worcester. New prominent names joining the down to weight class group
are Merlo (140-LC) and Parish (160-TA). Responding to last week's
comment about Loomis's trip to the Gilman duals coach Reap points out
that if they had been at full strength they would have gone 2-1 on the
trip. In his opinion there are a few very good teams in the preps
(Blair, Wyoming, McDonough, Germantown and the others that usually
finish in the top 10 at the nationals but the rest are mostly like the
NE preps with some very talented guys and the rest of the team made up
of hard working wrestlers. If you look at the rankings it's interesting
to note the places where the top guys are close in weight and feed off
each other in the practice room: Andover (Cintron- Steur- Mosquera;
Elder-Sanderson), Loomis (Mesrobian-Merlo), NMH (Ponte-Bey;
Coutoumas-Patterson-Tarantino; Strunk--Roddy-Wright), Hyde-C
(Morris-Welch-Cunniff), Tabor (Anza-Zonfrelli-Ingram), Hyde-M
(Lovely-Waters) and Choate (Franlin-Thigpen-Duffy) - that type of
competition day in day out goes a long way in getting ready for the
season ending tournaments. Interesting to note that Exeter probably has
the #1 and #2 man at 285 but of course can only enter one man. This
week's top individual matches are: 135 1- 2, 140 2-3 and 1- 4, 145 1-

Roxbury Latins big win over Tabor raised some eyebrows and it looks like

IV Scuttlebutt: Big match of the week is # 1 (NMH) vs # 2 (Andover) with both being undefeated in league action and with one loss each overall. The NMH-PA match will feature two 1 vs 2 individual rankings along with a 1-3 and a 3-4. Exeter-Tabor another good match this week as Tabor gets back in action after a prolonged time from competition. Loomis made a trip to the Gilman Duals and one of their opponents was Wyoming Seminary who is either # 2 or #3 in the national prep world - while Loomis isn't as strong as they been in recent years they are still in the top 10 in NE and their Wyoming match shows how far we need to go to compete with the "big boys". Wrestlers are starting to settle into their tournament weight classes with the most noteable being NE Champs Van Lang (Bru) 103, LaBeef (Pom) 130, and Palmer (TP) 135 plus Class A champ Cunniff down to 140. Several schools on mid winter weekend break so not as many matches on Sat as usual. Looking at the individual rankings the two deepest weights appear to be 160, 140, and 171 in that order. IV scuttlebutt: Andover- Tabor a close one and hard to find a weight
class where either coach might think the results should have been
different (Tabor forfeited one which didn't help their cause).
Andover-Loomis basically the same except for one close match which if
the results were reversed the same team wins. In the PA-LC match PA
forfeited 2 while LC gave up one. Andover's 2 forfeits vs BH's zero a
big difference. In the Andover-RL match 8 weights went the distance -
not a typical NE prep school match where's it's usually pin or be pinned
! In the NMH quint they were 43-4 in actual matches wrestled plus were
given 11 forfeits. The Hoggers gave away 14 forfeits themselves. NMH
which hasn't put their regular lineup on the mat since Dec 8 may be back
at full strength on Feb 2. Having a full lineup is a great start to a sucessfull season.

the weekend. Big league match this week will be Andover-Worcester. Big

Hyde Wrestling Team Emerges a Winner in Tense Thriller
Hyde-ME 40 Landmark 39 January 16, 2008 @Phillips Exeter Academy
With a team evenly comprised of 7 less-experienced or alternate varsity starters and 7 of the best JV wrestlers at their weights, Hyde-Maine traveled to Exeter to take on a young varsity team from Landmark. The result was one of the more exciting meets I have had the opportunity to coach over 34 years. The team lead changed hands with every single match! Although the starting weight class is by random draw, the final match could not have been in better hands, for even a first-year Phoenix knows how to rise from the ashes, with a final victory which represented both a personal and team come-from-behind triumph. But more on that later …
Walking into the immense Exeter athletic facility and learning of its storied wrestling tradition could intimidate even the most experienced grappler, so the challenge conveyed to the team was: “Make this gym your own today.” Responding to the enthusiastic spirit led by the Captain of the Day, Dylan Ross ’08, the team did just that. (Those more familiar with Dylan’s history with the sport might have found his selection as captain an unusual one. He spent much of last season avoiding practice, never mind the mat, and he began this season seeking to participate in any sport but this one.) But just as Hyde believes that one should not be beholden to one’s past, wrestling provides the opportunity for an individual to come face-to-face with his or her hidden demons. For to fully confront the opponent means a wrestler must first learn to work through and accept how s/he withholds putting his or her best to the test. While the end product has yet to surface, Dylan has clearly embraced a process he would have never tested up until a few weeks ago.
As the weight class draw would have it, the match with the midnight blue team from Prides Crossing, Massachusetts began at 125 pounds: Bath’s Chad Bolster ’11 versus Jamie Toulan, with Chad’s mother Leslie our parent supporter. The first period ended in a 22 draw, with Toulan earning the initial points; then it was 4-3 Landmark heading into the 3rd section where, after an exchange of reversals, a near fall back exposure led to the final 95 score and 30 Viking team lead. Next at 130, returning wrestler Brittin Irwin ’09 sought his first victory of the season. After giving up a takedown to Mark Meszaros’ single leg attack, Brit escaped then scored a takedown of his own and followed it up with a torturous Mills half nelson, twisting his foe until he had no more elasticity and could do nothing but succumb to Brit’s will. Knowing he now had his man now, Brit tightened his grip into a place of no return, catapulting Bath into its first lead with a 6-point, 48-second fall. It was now 63 Bath.
The next three Bath wrestlers each jumped up one weight class to assist the Phoenix cause. Moving up to 135 lbs., 2nd-year grappler Steve Kakouris ’09 also sought his first varsity win. After fighting off the first attempts to turn him, Steve could not hold off Pat Graham’s offense. A pin by this Viking warrior put Landmark back into a 96 advantage. Next freshman Mac McGuire ’11 approached the 10-foot inner circle with characteristic determination (reminiscent of his father, Hyde-Connecticut faculty member Mickey). The first third ended with a 50 Mac lead. The 2nd period was more of a battle, with Mac earning not one, but two 2-point reversals. In the final frame, Mac worked hard to secure the pin, but 140-pounder Charles O’Conor successfully fought off his back. Still, Mac’s 123 victory a “major decision” is one where the margin of difference between scores is between 8 and 14 earned an important 4 points, pushing Hyde back to the forefront at 109. (Just how important the extra point would be we could not know until after the fourteenth match of the day.) Next up was Bath’s 3rd freshman, Justin Castor ’11, whose opening attack showed all the promise (and some of the unevenness) of his potential as a wrestler and insight into his adolescent spirit as well. Due credit for his feistiness given, Justin’s aggressive approach also made him vulnerable to redirection by the Viking’s 145-pound competitor, Andreo Bono, thus exposing Justin’s back to the mat just long enough for a fall at the 0:58 mark, moving the spear throwers back in front 15 10.
At 152 lbs., Pat Forenza ’08 openly admits to having become a wrestling convert after accepting the senior challenge to leave his comfort zone and take on a sport where he was not the superstar soccer player or fastest cross-country ski racer. Unfortunately, there was no bout against Landmark, although Pat fought admirably in an exhibition loss to Exeter’s varsity starter, Mike Yoo. However, the 6-point forfeit had the same impact as a pin, propelling the Phoenix to rise once again, now a slim 1615 lead. Dylan Ross ’09 wore his captain’s status proudly, as he literally ran onto the mat to face Robert Connelly at 160 pounds. Dylan’s desire to produce his best was evident, yet he was unable to hold off Landmark’s most experienced antagonist. With a first-period fall, the Vikings once again seized back the team race 2116.
Bath’s most experienced wrestler on the day, Robert McCullohs ’08, stepped next into the 28-foot circle of challenge, standing across from Chris Trumbo. Robert’s opening takedown was neutralized by Chris’ reversal, knotting the score at 22 heading into the 2nd round. The second frame featured 3 reversals, two by Robert. When he found himself on top for the 3rd time in the match, he made sure it was the last, securing a half and wrist, squarely holding the shoulders, so there would be no question that the Phoenix would one more time emerge on top, 2221. Bath’s 189 lb. contestant represented the senior half of the Castor clan, Justin ’08. Mirroring his brother’s attack mentality, Trevor rushed into battle, pushing the action until Brandon Lambert seized the initiative when Trevor overreached, ending Trevor’s effort to halt the back-and-forth team advantage. Now the team tally was back in the Landmark corner at 2722.
Weighing in at a solid 200 pounds, and ready to claim his 3rd victory in a row, but first in a varsity uniform, Bath’s Alex Furth ’09 now led the charge against Chris DeRonde at 215. Cinching up his favorite pancake throw, Alex wasted no time in halting any Viking celebration, finishing off his man in 31 seconds. Just as quickly as Bath fell behind, the team in bright yellow-striped, dark blue singlets regained the front by a 2827 differential. Not to be outdone by the flame-tinged birds, Landmark’s Stephen Darby went right to the task against Tim Cameron ’09, who was seeing his second match in his first week in the sport. Securing the 27-second fall made the team score once again change hands, 33 28 Vikings.
Rolling back to the lightweights, Zoe Dorian ’10 had her hand raised due to Landmark forfeit, turning around the team disadvantage, so the team score evolved to a 4th one-point margin, 34 33. Of course, to maintain the event’s symmetry, Bath had to also offer a forfeit of its own at 112 to Nicholas Merriam. Heading into the final bout, Landmark retained its 5th five-point edge, 39 33, meaning Bath needed a 5-point technical fall (15-point or greater victory margin) to tie or a pin to win. In a non-counting exhibition match, Zoe held her own despite the weight difference, before Nick could finally hold her shoulders to the mat for a 2nd-period fall.
All of which brings us back to 119 pounds, the balance of the match in first-year wrestler arms on both sides. Despite his inexperience, Austin Doyle ’09 knows how to prepare for a match; long before his name was called, Austin moved around behind the bench in his animated stance, feinting tie-ups while stepping in for imaginary attacks from neutral. Once on the mat, Austin’s mental rehearsal helped him establish a 2-point lead. But Reed Fraser fought right back with an escape and a takedown of his own. Now behind in match score, and knowing he represented Bath’s final chance to escape with a team victory, Austin caught his opponent high. Following the reversal, he dug under the arm to find a place for his hand on back of Reed’s neck. Running on his toes, exerting full pressure, Austin levered his man into the near fall position just as the first period neared its close. As his teammates all stood cheering on his efforts, the official slapped the mat with one second remaining. The Phoenix had recovered for the 7th and final time, 4039.
Hyde School Places 4th at the 18th Doug Parker Invitational Wrestling Tournament
The Doug Parker Invitational Wrestling tournament is a chaotic whirlwind of wrestling that takes place annually at Enfield High School in Enfield, CT. The tournament is run on six mats and brings together private and public school wrestlers in honor of Doug Parker, who was the longtime wrestling coach at Springfield College. This year's tournament featured entrants from 28 teams in 15 weight classes, including the unified Hyde School team.
Hyde School entered nine of our elite wrestlers in the tournament, with 7 from the Bath campus and 2 from the Woodstock campus. It was an incredible day for Hyde, and incredible to watch the team camaraderie develop amongst these wrestlers throughout the day. In many ways, our joint participation in this tournament defined synergy and will hopefully be the first of such events for our schools.
There were several outstanding moments during the course of the day which define character on the wrestling mat, and the character of a Hyde wrestler. Some of those notable moments include Rob McCullohs (PG, 171) pinning the second-seeded wrestler in the tournament in the first round; Mike Ingalls ('09, 189) scoring a dramatic takedown to win as time expired against an opponent who had pinned him in the first round; and Jarrett Morris ('09, 135) who had one of the best wrestlers in New England on his back four times in their finals match and never quit though he didn't win the match. When the dust settled, Hyde emerged an incredible fourth place behind defending tournament and New England champ Belmont Hill.
The individual results:
119 Taiga Koda (WS) wrestling up a weight class, did not place
119 Kyle Lovely (BA) 6th place
125 Ronnie Waters (BA) 1st place, Outstanding Wrestler - more on this below
135 Jarrett Morris (WS) 2nd place
160 Dylan Gardner (BA) did not place
171 Rob McCullohs (BA) did not place though he contributed outstanding effort
171 Justin Pratt (BA) 3rd place
189 Mike Ingalls (BA) 4th place, decided by criteria (only allowed 5 matches in one day)
215 Mike Ludeke (BA) 4th place, Fastest Pin (special recognition) 0:12
The match of the day goes without doubt to Ronnie Waters ('09, 125). Wrestling in the finals against another junior, Greg Karelitz of Belmont Hill, Ronnie found himself down by the score of 6-1 in this battle of defending New England prep champions (Greg 119, Ronnie 125). At one point during the second period, Ronnie was able to get past Karelitz' defense as they went out of bounds. Though no points were scored, Ronnie had found the answer. As wrestling resumed, he fired off 8 unanswered points before letting his opponent up as time expired to win the match by the score of 10 - 8. This was an incredible victory for many reasons. First, Ronnie remained focused and relentless though he was down early. He chipped away and chipped away before blowing the match open. Second, in many ways this match was a battle of grit and heart between two equally skilled and accomplished wrestlers. Ronnie's victory is a testament to his teammates and the work ethic they have all forged in the practice room. Third, Ronnie was wrestling for his 100th career win and earned it over one of New England's best wrestlers. For his victory, Ronnie was recognized as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler in the lighter weights (103 - 135). Congratulations.
For me, this has been an incredible start to what I hope will be an incredible season. Whether it has been the "arena rock - singing goofiness" of our road trips or the blood, sweat, and tears of practice, or the undeniable character of Hyde wrestlers on the mat; I believe we are on to something, maybe something big. More important than what I believe, the kids believe it too, and they believe in themselves and each other. We hope to make something incredible out of our belief when the season really starts in January.
Everyone ought to wrestle, and every wrestler ought to wrestle for Hyde School.
--Logan Kidwell, Head Coach - Varsity Wrestling
This is Joe Gauld's response to Logan Kidwell's outstanding write up on the Doug Parker Tournament held this past weekend in Enfield CT. To finish fourth against this strong field is indeed a fantastic achievement and we are very pleased that our Woodstock wrestlers could participate with their brothers from Bath this year! Thanks very much to Coach Kidwell and Truluck for their work this past weekend! Cheers, Woodstock Coach Dan Murphy
I am delighted! Wrestling has always been the sport that perhaps best reflects the Hyde concept, and the fact that the team reflected the joint effort of both schools (perhaps next year you will invite some Hyde-DC wrestlers) means something very special to me and many others. Maybe we are on the road to returning to the wrestling glories of Hyde in the past! The year (1981) that we won the Class A tourney going away ( it turned out we would have won against an all-star team of all the other schools), the Andover AD came up to me somewhat speechless and said in a complimentary way, " Joe, what do you all do to those kids up there?" Congratulations to you and the entire team. Joey Gauld, Hyde Founder
Congratulations to the team and coaches of both schools. There was a lot of "wrastlin' " goin' on in that small gym! Paul and I were glad to witness the commitment! Looking forward to a great season.
