Wrestling Movie VERITAS to Screen in New Jersey!

Island Gateway Films announces the much anticipated movie screening of the critically acclaimed feature documentary Veritas during the Red Bank Film Festival at 4:30pm on Sunday, October 7th, 2007 [Clearview Cinemas, 36 White Street, Red Bank, NJ, 07701]

Be a part of wrestling history!

Wrestling fans can now take advantage of the opportunity to watch Veritas on the big screen!

VERITAS means Righteousness, Truth and Integrity? For three time NCAA All American Wrestler, Jon Trenge, it?s a reminder for him to do the right thing. Veritas is a compelling movie that follows All-American wrestler Jon Trenge as he strives to achieve his childhood dream of becoming a National Champion for his hometown school, Lehigh University. After undergoing five eye surgeries, Jon ignores doctors? warnings and risks permanent blindness to pursue his dream of becoming a champion. Jon?s opponents attack his eyes causing him to lose his temper and fight to defend his vision. Consequently, Jon is ordered to undergo anger management therapy where he learns valuable lessons about himself and the meaning behind competing in athletics.

?I think it is very representative of what I went through,? Trenge says. ?There are some things that are in the movie that are very therapeutic for me to watch.?

Jon's trusted coach, former U.S. Olympic wrestling coach, Greg Strobel demonstrates not only what it means to be a great coach, but his positive approach and caring for his athletes makes him an amazing role model for coaches of any sport or any athletic administrator. ?The movie really captures the emotion, conflicts, adversity and struggles Jon experienced,? Strobel says. ?It is very accurate. We are not actors playing out scenes?this is the real deal.?

The NCAA News' Greg Johnson writes, ?You don?t have to be a wrestling aficionado to appreciate Veritas, you just have to appreciate a student-athlete?s resolve. Johnson raves, ?Above all, the compelling movie captures how a young man evolves as a person and learns lessons that he can apply in other aspects of his life.? The NCAA review concludes, ?The message is that the film shows how a person can grow through competing in intercollegiate athletics.

Veritas' director, Howie Miller, a former college athlete himself, believes, ?The most important message in the film is that we are not only remembered by our achievements, instead our success is measured by our relationships and the people who care about us.?

Veritas screened at the 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships to a standing ovation, but this movie is not only for wrestling fans, it is for fans of any sport. Gary Blockus of The Morning Call writes, ?For anyone who loves wrestling, it's a five-star must-see documentary. For anyone who ever dared to compete in any sport, it's a compelling account of a young man's journey to reach his boyhood dream. Anyone who thinks they know what any athlete goes through needs to see ''Veritas.''

The film also screened at the Southside Film Festival in Pennsylvania and will showcase in select film festivals across the county. Look out for the film at a film festival near you!

Executive Producer of the National High School Coaches Association Productions, Henry K. Priest, believes that this inspirational film should be a mandatory purchase for every school and every team. ?Any athletic director who wants to encourage leadership and character development should present this movie to all his coaches and athletes.?

Blair Academy Wrestlers to Aid Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Buc Grapplers to Pin Down Diabetes

The Blair Academy Wrestling Team is headed to Lehigh University this weekend, February 23-24, where it will defend its National Prep Wrestling Title....its 27th in-a-row. That's correct, the Bucs have won 26 consecutive National Prep Wrestling Titles, but the student-athletes at Blair are wrestling with another opponent this weekend-Juvenile Diabetes.

The Blair coaches want to "Pin Down Diabetes." They didn't choose this worthwhile cause randomly---this cause hits close to home at Blair as the team's star 215 lb. wrestler Jared Platt has it (and manages it daily).

"I brought it up to Jared and he liked the idea. Monitoring his diabetes is a daily battle for him as he has to watch what he eats; monitor his sugar levels; get enough sleep; get enough insulin, to name a few quotidian monitoring activities. People who know him know how careful he must be; however juvenile diabetes hasn't stopped Jared from being a one-man wrecking machine," Clavel added.

Platt is one of the top-10 recruits in the nation is headed to The Pennsylvania State University on a scholarship and should be a multiple-time All-American and possible NCAA Champion. He is a National Prep Wrestling Champion and placed second at the Asics/Vaughn Junior National Wrestling Championships this past summer.

"I was diagnosed in 1998. I didn't know what it was at first. I lost a lot of weight and was drinking a lot of water. The problem was that my doctors first misdiagnosed me," Platt said. "The key for me to this point has been not denying it or hiding it....taking care of myself enough to be successful. Not to use a cliché but "a sound mind is a sound body. The trainers at Blair know...the training staff at Penn State is aware of my condition. In fact, PSU has a diabetes research foundation and I'll be working closely with them on research; and who knows, we may find the cure. I think we are close," Platt said. "I may have to do a little bit extra everyday (like take my blood levels) but so that's okay."

There's another nationally-renowned wrestler, one who competed for The Univ. of Nebraska, who has juvenile diabetes, and we asked him to chime in on the subject.
His name: Travis Pascoe. Pascoe was an All-America for the Univ. of Nebraska and a High School All-American where he was a three-time state champion for Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Wash. Pascoe is now training for the 2008 Olympic Games and is an assistant coach at Oregon State University.

"You can do anything you want as long as you give yourself a chance. Don't make {having juvenile diabetes} an excuse....don't give yourself an out." Pascoe said. "A lot of kids struggle with their blood sugars because they're not taking in enough fluids. Drink your eight cups of water a day--It will help keep your blood sugar up-more than you know," he added. "Plus, it's not just the kids-it's the parents too. Parents have to be educated on this subject and willing to give their kids a chance to do what they want to do."

HOW THE MONIES ARE BEING RAISED:

Blair is raising money by collecting per pin pledges. Meaning the amount you pledge is multiplied by the total number team pins.

"I am looking for 40 pins this year," Clavel added. "With 14 weight classes we have a good shot at getting those 40 pins."

If you would like to pledge monies for the Blair Academy Wrestler "To Pin Down Diabetes"-please call Paul Clavel this week at 908-362-2009, or email him at clavep@blair.edu. Mike Caruso's a Unbeaten 4x State Champion 1960-1963

I have to object to putting Mike Caruso as a 4x "State" Champion in New
Jersey.

FYI, NJ has NEVER had a 4x "State" Champion.

In fact, one of the more interesting and re-occurring threads on the NJ
Wrestling Forum or the Best on Mat Message Board is which of NJ's 3x champs
came the closest to being a 4xer.

Some thing that it is Damion Hahn or Mike Frick who both lost in their 4th
state final by a single point. Mike in his sophomore year was leading 5-0
when his opponent escaped and took him down for a 5 point play to win 6-5.

The closest in my opinion is Harry Lanzi of Newwton who was a 3x heavyweight
champ in the late 40s but as a freshman at 168, he lost in OT on a ref's
decision (no criteria back then) at 168 pounds.

Anyway, no disrespect intended toward's the legendary Mr. Caruso. Mike was a
great wrestler in both high school and college but he wrestled for St.
Benedict's Prep, which back then, and now is not a member of the NJSIAA, thus
Mike did not compete in any NJ "State" Championship tourney.

Note, for a few years in the 80s and early 90s, St. Benedicts was a member of
the NJSIAA but ran afoul of the NJSIAA for recruiting violations for their
"national" champion soccer program and was suspended from state tourney
competition by the NJSIAA. Rather than accept the suspension, St. B's choose
to leave the NJSIAA and go with Blair Academy, Peddie, Hun, Lawrenceville,
etc and join the separate "Prep" group.

Much like Steve Mocco and Cory Cooperman, Mike won his "state" titles among
the dozen or so "prep" teams who compete in their own event and not against
the wrestlers from the nearly 300 schools (public and parochial) who compete
in the NJSIAA event.

Thus, I'm requesting that you remove Mike from your list of unbeaten 4x
"state" champs from NJ or at least move him and add Cooperman and Mocco to a
separate list of 4x "Prep" champs.
