Correction on the Disney Duals Memo

There is one correction to the Disney Duals memo I sent out. The website had Lawrence White and Corey Mock's records wrong. They had recorded the win as a loss for Lawrence White and vica-versa for Corey. It should be like this:
Lawrence White was 11-1, wrestled for Arrichion and is from Cary HS & rec'd a silver medal
Corey Mock was 9-3 wrestled for Team NC is from Chapel Hill and rec'd a copper medal
Thanks, Coach Winterton

Overview of The Cary Wrestling Program and It's Wrestlers and Coaches

Please find below a quick overview of The Cary Wrestling Program and it's wrestlers and coaches. Since the Mid-70's Cary has been a wrestling power in North Carolina. Later Cary found itself ranked among the tops in the Southeast and even in the top 25 of the Nation. In 1977 Coach John Sanderson took the Imps to their first title. John was an outstanding coach but moved on to another coaching position in NC. In 1981 Jerry Winterton was hired and has continued to build on what John started.
Please look at attached for more information on The Cary High School Wrestling History and Coach Jerry Winterton.

More recently the Cary Wrestlers won their seventh State Dual or Individual tournament out of a possible eight over the last four years. This makes a total of 18 for the program dating back to that first title under Sanderson in 1977. In this year's State Finals Cary had five Champions!!! That tied a record for number of champs in North Carolina. Cary also won the very prestigious Tiger Holiday Classic for the third year in a row this past season.

Wow!! Anthony Dunbar did a great job putting all of the below together!! Thanks, enjoy checking it out...We will try and get the rest of the guys stuff added to this soon.

There are several matches on flowrestling.org that have cary kids wrestling in them. All they have to do is go to the site and click on senior nationals then go to select state and pick NC. All the matches from kids from NC will be on there. They can do the same for freshman thru juniors. To find the brackets go to the site for either 9th, 10th etc and stroll down, way down past some hotel info looking for brackets. You have to look for it but it's there.

I want to emphasize I was in a hurry yesterday when I sent this stuff out. I didn't mention what a great tourney Matt Colvard had! He was top 12 in his weight, lost 6-4 in the round to be All American. His only losses were to All Americans!! Please check his matches out below.

Coach just found out a little info about that 4x champ that LW beat from Missouri. Thru this season he only gave up one reversal and a bunch of escapes for the season. They were saying he was the best kid by far at 130 in the state and prob the best at any weight. HE actually wrestled in the Miss. vs Kansas all star match where he won 12-2. Definitely a big win for Lawrence White

-defeated Zach Randall of VT 6-0. 2x finalist in VT
=defeated Tyler Kottas of NE. 7-2. 3x state champion and 3rd in Ne
Lost to Vince Ramos 4-2 of Ill. This match had some controversy and Brendan nearly had 2 take downs that could have tied it. One with time running out and one on a questionable call. Ramos finished 2nd in the tournament and is a Ill state champ and 4x place winner. All American in several large national tournaments.
-lost to Tyler Kampen of Iowa by fall. Kampen was a 2x place winner and state champion from Iowa. Will represent Team Iowa in this years Dream Team match against the USA. will wrestle Jon Burns. Kampen lost in the match to be All american.

Ronnie Winterton:

PALMERINO, DAN

130

Amsterdam High School
Class A district tournament Champion and was upset at sectionals and placed 5th.

Micheal Carpenter 130 of Montana beat Ronnie in his first consolation match and was a 6th place in Montana States
.Justin Koren Just Made All American by Placing 5th in the Country at the NHSCA Senior Nationals

Justin Koren just made All American by placing 5th in the country at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Koren's bracket is on the website at the NHSCA.com website. I believe he won 6 matches and lost 2. We just finished. Justin will walk tonight in the parade of champions and collect his statue and head back to NC.

Eloheim Palma lost in the finals after running through his side of the bracket. A controversal no call lead to the defeat in the double tie-breaker in his final match. I'm not sure but think you can view a couple of Eloheim's matches on flowrestling.com Eloheim went 5-1.

Cary was well represented as several underclassmen won matches and Cary may have been the only school to have a Junior in the finals and three seniors in the round of 16 at the end of Friday's matches.

Lawrence White won four hard fought matches beating a 4-time Missouri State Champ in the second round before being bumped out. Brendon Parker-Risk lost in the round of 16 to a finalist at the buzzer. Both Lawrence and Brendon were very close to the All American status.

Again, if you go to the website, you may be able to see what accomplishments the wrestlers had that we have wrestled this week, It's quite impressive.

I'll try and give you a better wrap up when I get back in town.

Nick Gregoris placed fourth at 160. Nick and Justin were the only two senior All-Americans for North Carolina and Eloheim Palma placed the highest of all Juniors with the second place finish. Corey Mock placed 7th at 125 Juniors. Both Gregoris and Mock wrestle for Chapel Hill HS.

Thanks, Coach Winterton

Selected as the 2007 National Coach of The Year-NHSCA

The 2006-2007 will long be remembered not only as one of Cary's best but one of North Carolina's best. Twelve seniors lead the way and will surely be missed. Luke Wallace, Casey Peterson, Shashant Shah, Chip Reap, and Jimmy O'Brien all made great contributions to the success of this year's run to both titles, duals and individuals. Luke worked out as Sophomore State Champion Eloheim Palma's personal workout partner, while the others all were very experienced technical wrestlers who helped groom our younger wrestlers. Peterson and Shah place 1st and 2nd respectively in the Westover tourney, while Luke defeated a ranked wrestler during the season. These seniors would've started for any other team and were a great assest to our underclassmen.

The season started out with tourney wins at Westover and Orange. These were followed by a trip to New York State to compete in the Tri-Valley Tournament. 25 teams from four different New York Sections would be there to try and win over a very tough field. Sections II (Queensbury, LaSalle, Ballston Spa), V (Wayne), IV (Tioga) and III (Mexico), all had teams in the tourney that would finish the season ranked in the top two of their section! In NY a section has approx. 80 schools in it so this was one of the premier tourneys in the State. Cary got on one of it's 07' patented rolls and bulldozed the consolation rounds to a 99 point victory. This was truly a trip the team will long remember and was still being talked about at New York States in early March.

From here the wrestlers went on to defend their title at The Tiger Classic, the toughest tourney in North Carolina again winning large over Ragsdale (3A Runner-up) and Jesuit, La. (#1 ranked in La.) plus 25 other strong teams. The wins in these two tourneys, NY and Tiger, pushed Cary into the #2 spot in the United States SE Region and #25 nationally as ranked by Wrestling USA Magazine.

January the schedule lightened up some with wins in the East Burke and Millbrook dual tourneys and then a victory at the Miller-Mott tourney was followed by some more duals with the meeting with Rival Riverside lurking ahead in the State Duals.

All 14 Cary Wrestlers were named All-Conference and even more amazingly all made the conference finals in the Tri-8 tournament. This feat was followed by the state duals where Cary met up with Riverside in the East Semi-Finals at Jack Britt High School on a Thursday in early Feb. A tense match up as this was #1 vs #2 in the 4A state of NC. going at it. Cary prevailed and followed with a pretty large win over Eastern Regional Champions Jack Britt. This set up the state final with West Forsyth who had eliminated the west competition of Mt. Tabor, Davie Co. etc. On Feb. 10th a near capacity Cary crowd witnessed the largest point total and margin of victory ever occurring in the history of NC State duals regardless of state classification. 53-9 was the final count thanks to three wrestlers coming from behind to pull off victories, Gabe Brotzman, Tommy Freeman, and Khang Nguyen. While Brotzman knocked off the #1 ranked (and 4A state champ) both Tommy and Khang kept the crowd buzzing as all three had unbelievable efforts to win in the final seconds. Lawrence White won again and with his 5-0 dual meet record for the week and beating a #1 wrestler and also a Riverside future 4A state champ he was awarded Co-MOW along with brotzman for the State Tourney Duals.

Next up..defending the Regional title for the 15th consecutive year. This is quite a record when you think about there are only four regions in the state and the ME regional is generally considered the toughest in the State. In recent years it's featured #1 and #2 Riverside or Cary in any order. This year Cary advanced 11 wrestlers to the State Individual tourney with a great effort at Chapel Hill HS, setting up a chance to run the table for the season.

North Carolina States were not a given as both Mt. Tabor and Riverside were in it after the 1st day. Cary would have to depend on the wrestle-backs and semis to pull out the win. The semis went fairly well with four of five winning and only Long Wang's tough fought bout with Sparrow (4-Time Champion) as the only set-back. The key now was the wrestle-backs. Cary copied the 06' format and burnt through the consolation brackets, in fact three wrestlers, Hoerdemann, Dixon and White all defeated wrestlers that had beaten them earlier on Friday! Everyone of the 11 wrestlers scored important points with Hoerdemann 5th, Wang and White 4th, and Dixon and Parker-Risk placing 3rd.

Amazingly, for the third time (98', 00' being the others) Cary had all four finalist win! Joey Farnsworth, Justin Koren, Thomas Ferguson and Eloheim Palma all went into the tourney ranked #1 in their weight classes and made sure to prove the prognosticators correct with big wins.

The teammates from this team will long remember what a truly special group of guys they were a part of. From the 1st year, 9th grade wrestler to the senior star everyone will remember the Joey's, Thomas's, Trevor's, Long's, Sam's, Tommy's and Khang's that made these seniors so different talent-wise as well as personality-wise. Some top individual performances were:

Joey's 63-0 record, never giving up a takedown, a reversal, a escape, back points, cautions, stallings, etc. An unbelievable record that you teammates got to witness first-hand. Also, Joey's pub-run of newspapers, Sports Illustrated, etc. being the #1 senior at 103 in the nation and being selected to the Dream team!

Thomas's 133-2 record in his last two years at Cary. His two Pre-Season National Championships, his super duck, winning two State Titles a earning a scholarship to North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sam's pinning. 43 pins tied him with Joey as the team's leader, he had four in the State tournament. It was always exciting watching Sam tear into his opponent.

Trevor's repeat of last years Saturday run. Placing 4th and 3rd in the state both years beating people who had beat him earlier. His inside trip...bar arm

Long's will to win and turning it up a notch at the end of the season. Being a 3X state qualifier and having his hard work pay off with a 4th place finish

Watching Tommy and Khang compete, Tommy always out-weighed throwing legs, Khang always battling and winning most, reaching the Orange finals and being robbed up in NY vs a NY state runner-up.

Underclassmen, Justin Koren, NHSCA All-American and now State Champ, Brendon Parker-Risk, two-time state placer, Gabe Brotzman, 2X qualifier and 6th place, Lawrence White, 4th placer and Eloheim Palma Cary's first Heavyweight Champion and Cary's first Sophomore State Champion all were fun to watch and sure to be in the mix of Cary's run for the title in 08'

Eric Sutton Named the Lee Carroll Award Winner
Two-time state medalist Eric Sutton of Tarboro High School will be presented the good sportsmanship award for scholastic wrestling in the Tri-Counties, of Edgecombe, Nash and Wilson, before kickoff of this Friday‚s home football game with North Lenoir. Lee Carroll and TakeDown Report Editor Martin Fleming will present the award to Eric. Last year the award was given to Zach Shearin and Paul Horner of Southern Nash.

Eric has been named on the TDR Tri-County ˆ First Team and on the TDR Top 12 rankings the past two years. The rankings recognize the Top 12 wrestlers in each weight in eastern North Carolina and are commemorated on distinctive TDR shirts. "Eric improved well over the years to record over 100 career wins. He has been competitive even when wrestling with much heavier opponents." Fleming stated.

Lee Carroll started wrestling his sophomore year when Tarboro High School restarted the sport in 1992 with Butch Sadler as his coach. Lee won 112 matches in just 3 years with the Vikings. Lee was state runner-up his junior year before becoming a record setting undefeated state champion in 1995 with a (50-0) record. Lee went on to start four years at North Carolina State qualifying for the Nationals 3 times. After graduation Lee has worked in the field of computer assisted graphics and architecture in Raleigh.

The TakeDown Report, an on-line publication that promotes amateur wrestling in eastern North Carolina, sponsors the Award. "The award has been named to recognize the best example of good sportsmanship by a scholastic wrestler in the Tri-Counties of Edgecombe-Nash-Wilson," Fleming noted,"It also encourages the young men from the teams in the area with another opportunity for others to realize the hard work, determination and discipline it takes to be a top notch wrestler,‰ he added. The TakeDown Report is in its 11th year of publication in North Carolina reporting wrestling results and encouraging media coverage of the sport. Tran finished his short scholastic career with three state medals and 140 wins. He was twice the Eastern Regional Champion and earned numerous tournament and conference titles. VMI Edges Gardner-Webb On The Mats, 22-20
Alvarenga, & Cunningham Post Pins In Dual Victory
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.-  The VMI wrestling team evened their record at 1-1 with a 22-20 dual victory over Gardner-Webb on Friday night in non-conference action at Paul Porter Arena. After the Bulldogs took the first two matches to take an 8-0 lead, the Keydets rallied back with three consecutive wins, two
by pin, to take a 15-8 lead at the halfway point.  But a GWU pin in the next bout and a decision to follow it up gave the Bulldogs 17-15 advantage with three matches to go, before VMI claimed two of the final three to clinch the victory. "It was a wild, back-and-forth kind of match," said VMI head coach John Trudgeon.  "By no means did we wrestle up to our potential, but a win's a win, and it's good to get one under our belt.  We had a couple of huge pins by Sam (Alvarenga) and Tommy (Cunningham), and Corry's (Murray) major decision at 184 turned out to be big.  It was a good way to wrap up the first semester, but we need to keep getting better and better and build from this." With the match beginning at 125, GWU's Cortney Roberts used a strong third period to post an 18-2 technical fall over VMI's Jeremy Adams.  At 133, VMI's Tyler Anthony scored an early two points on GWU's Rob Tate, but Tate pulled an escape move in the closing seconds of the first period to trail just 2-1 entering the second period.  Starting the second period in the down position, Tate used an escape move to tie the match with 1:25 left in the period. A two-point near fall
with 1:10 remaining in the match gave Tate a 4-2 lead he would not relinquish, and GWU moved ahead 8-0. The momentum shifted for the Keydets In the 141 lb. weight class, as VMI's Brandon Franklin did battle with Charles Franz.  Franklin scored two consecutive two-point near falls as time expired in the first period, while Franz recorded an escape in the second to make it 4-1. But Franklin countered with a two-point reversal for a 6-1 lead. Franz again scored an escape with 35 seconds left in the second to make it 6-2 in favor of Franklin. The Keydet tacked on a point in the third with an escape for the 7-2 win, putting the Keydets' first points on the board to cut the margin to 8-3. The Keydets moved ahead with pins at 149 and 157.  Keydet senior Sam Alvarenga, ranked 18th nationally by Intermat at 149, pinned GWU freshman Garmonyou Neplo at the 2:30 mark to give VMI a 9-8 advantage, extending his match winning streak to 13 and his overall record to 18-2.  Tommy Cunningham needed only 1:38 to do the same to David
Pelsang and Tommy Cunningham giving the Keydets a 15-8 lead. But the tide turned at 165, where Matthias Piasecki pinned VMI senior John Burton only 1:34 in, cutting the margin to a single point.  The 174-pound match then matched GWU's Chad Davis and VMI's Dustin McCabe.  Davis jumped out to a 2-0 advantage a minute into the dual thanks to a takedown. McCabe tallied a point with an escape to make it 2-1 at the
end of the first period. Davis garnered another point due to a hand violation on McCabe. He made the score 4-1 with an escape with just over a minute remaining in the second period. The two battled to a stalemate in the final period as Davis won 5-1 after riding time was factored in, handing the lead back over to the hosts at 17-15. But VMI senior Corry Murray stopped the bleeding with his major decision at 184.  Facing off with Brandon Beach, Murray recorded the first two points of the match as the seconds wound down in the first period, taking a 2-0 lead into the second. He added on two more for a 4-0 advantage 13 seconds into the second frame. Beach got on the board with an escape, trimming the deficit to three at 4-1. Murray gained a 5-1 lead due to a technical violation on Beach and went up 6-1 seconds into the third with an escape. Murray, who held a 9-2 lead with eight seconds remaining, scored two points in the
closing seconds to gain a major decision victory, 11-2. In the 197-pound match, GWU's Dustin Porter saw the Keydets send out Kyle Elgert, normally a competitor at 174.  Porter gained a 2-0 lead only to see Elgert score a point with an escape. However, Porter recorded two more points in the first for a 4-1 lead heading into the second frame. Starting in the down position, Porter made the score 5-1 with an escape of his own. Porter tacked on two more points with 10 seconds remaining in the second to hold a 7-1 lead going into the final period. A late escape by Elgert made the final score 8-2 in favor of Porter due to riding time, as Elgert, wrestling up two weight classes, held the Bulldogs to only a three-point victory, making the score 20-19 in favor of the hosts. In the final bout of the night, GWU's Nick Roehrick took on VMI senior Scott Buhman at heavyweight. An escape by Buhman to start the third period and two more points gave him a 3-0 cushion with just 49 seconds remaining. Roehrick cut the deficit to 3-1 with an escape, but only 32 seconds remained in the match. Roehrick could not overcome the deficit and with riding time factored in, fell 5-1. The Keydets will now break for exams before returning to the mats for the Southern Scuffle, to be held Dec. 29 & 30

Eastern Wayne Escapes Pam Pack

As submitted by Bruce A. Burridge, Eastern Wayne High School Asst Wrestling Coach
Freshman Drew Tesar notched a second-period pin and Eastern Wayne slipped past Washington 45-33 in non-conference action Tuesday evening at New Hope. åÊThe Warriors built a 21-point lead on individual victories from Jordan Harris (112 pounds), Chris Tesar (119), James Knight (130), A.J. Washington (135), Detori Mitchell (140) and Brian Lincoln (152). åÊWashington collected three consecutive wins, beginning at 160 and closed the overall match score to 33-27. The teams traded six points until Drew Tesar and Daniel Garcia headed to the mat for the final bout of the evening. åÊEach grappler spent considerable time on his back, but raised either his left or right shoulder to avoid getting pinned. Garcia put Tesar on his back early in the second period, but Tesar scored a reverse and pinned Garcia at the 3-minute, 5-second mark.
It was Tesar's fifth pin of the season. åÊEastern Wayne returns to action Saturday in the Pierce-Davis Memorial at SouthWest Edgecombe in Pinetops.

Local wrestling teams off to good startåÊ By The Daily ReflectoråÊ Thurs., Nov. 30th, 2006
Coming off the best season in the short history of the school, South Central's wrestling team seems to be picking up where it left off.åÊ The Falcons are off to a 4-0 start with wins over Edenton-Holmes, Pasquotank, Greene Central and most recently Wilson Beddingfield under their belt. With three state qualifers from last year's squad back, coach Dennis Marshall is thinking SC can make a run at accomplishing its goals of a Coastal 3-A/4-A Conference championship and a berth in the state dual team tournament.åÊ "Right now it looks like we might be on the right track to do that," Marshall said. "We've got some young guys who are only in their first or second year wrestling that are starting for us, but as they get more experience we're just going to get better."åÊ The three state qualifers from a season ago who are returning for the Falcons are Timmy Cowan in the 119-pound class, Calvin Barnes with the 160 pounders and Quinton Godley in the 171-pound class. They are joined by six freshmen on the varsity squad.åÊ Making the future look even brighter for the Falcons is the addition of a junior varsity squad this season. According to Marshall, that plays a huge role in keeping guys involved with the sport.åÊ "That's the way you get guys to hang around is by getting them matches," Marshall said. "And with the JV team, we're able to get more guys matches."åÊ SC returns to the mats on Saturday when it travels to Pinetops to compete in SouthWest Edgecombe's Pierce Davis Memorial tournament.

Belmont-Abbey Falls To Campbell, Defeats Spartanburg Methodist In Home Opener
BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey wrestling team went 1-1 this evening in a tri-meet with Campbell and Spartanburg Methodist at the Wheeler Center. The Crusaders nearly upset the Division I Camels, falling 24-21 before rallying to defeat Spartanburg Methodist 24-20.åÊ In the Campbell match, the Crusaders lost the first match (165 lbs) before freshman David Hoggard gave the Abbey the lead with a 10-8 win, scoring a takedown in the first overtime. After a Campbell forfeit, the Camels responded by winning the next two matches on decisions before Chris Neidermeier won his match 13-8 to give the Abbey the lead. åÊThe Crusaders upset bid took a serious blow when Riemark Neidermeier, who had led his match throughout, suffered a two-point takedown with three seconds left in the third round as he lost 4-3. Campbell won the next match, (141 lbs) before freshman Appolon Jean-Paul tied the match with an 8-3 win in the 149 pound class. That set up a winner take all in the final match, the 157 lbs. match, where Campbell won on a fall 2:11 into the second round, allowing them to escape with a victory.åÊ In the nightcap, the Abbey jumped out to a big lead, as Phil Bates won the opening match (165 lbs.) in dominating fashion, posting a 20-8 score. Hoggard followed with another buzzer-beating victory, posting a two-point takedown with less than five seconds left to post an 11-10 win. åÊFreshman Will Cruz kept the winning streak going with an 18-10 win, but the Pioneers won the next two matches to break the Abbey‰¥ús string. Chris Neidermeier got the Crusaders back on track with a dominating 11-2 win, posting two near falls and a pair of takedowns, and older brother Reimark avenged his earlier loss with a 6-1 win. Freshman David Sledz gave the Abbey an insurmountable lead when he pinned his opponent in the third round. The Pioneers won the final two matches to end the scoring, but the Abbey held the lead as it won the match, 24-20.

Davidson Grapplers Place Eighth at Navy; Boyd Finishes in Third at 174

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Davidson wrestling squad scored 42.5 points at the Navy Classic on Saturday, good enough for eighth out of 13 teams, and senior Marcus Boyd had the best finish for the Wildcats placing third at 174 pounds. Freshman Ben Altman scored a fifth-place finish at 125 and sophomore Sam O'Hair came in sixth for 184-pounders.åÊ Seeded fourth for the meet, Boyd got off to a fine start by pinning Duquesne's Ryan Sula in 1:31, but faltered against Bucknell's Shane Riccio in the next bout, 10-3. In the consolation bracket, Boyd could not be beaten, winning by decisions of 11-6, 12-8 and 10-6 before the battle for third place. His opponent was Joe Clutter of West Virginia, who ended up getting disqualified, making Boyd the third-place finisher.åÊ Like Boyd, Altman got off to a fine start, topping Bucknell's Greg Hart, 7-4. He did not fare as well the next match, dropping a 15-7 decision to Jason Guffey of Bloomsburg. But in the wrestlebacks, Altman ripped off four consecutive victories before falling to Navy's Alex Usztics. So Altman was pitted against Guffey again, and judging by Altman's 8-4 victory, he learned something from the first battle.åÊ O'Hair began with a difficult task as he was paired up with the fifth-seeded Chance Litton of West Virginia. Despite a valiant effort, O'Hair dropped a 4-2 decision, sending him to the consolation bracket. He battled back, however, with 7-0 and 3-1 decisions, then a victory by fall in 1:04 over Bloomsburg's Eric Shaw. But fourth-seeded Matthew Parsons of Navy defeated O'Hair by a major decision, 10-1, and second-seeded Jared Ricotta of Duquesne won the fifth-place bout.åÊ At 141, senior Jim Avola was seeded fifth, but suffered a 5-2 loss in the first round. In the consolation bracket, he picked up a pair of pins before being pinned himself, keeping him from placing for the Wildcats.åÊ Junior Trebor Clavette was the top seed at 165, and after three consecutive victories by decision, was paired up against Andrew Rendos of Bucknell for the championship bout. Unfortunately, Clavette was disqualified and was not awarded a place.åÊ Freshman Mike Waters opened the tournament seeded sixth, only to falter in his first bout to fall into the consolation bracket. Following a medical default and a 14-3 triumph, Waters came up just short of placing due to a 3-2 loss.åÊ

Five Duke Wrestlers Place at UPenn Invitational, Barone Takes Third at 174 pounds
Duke (2-1) placed sixth out of ten competing teams at the UPenn Invitational on Sunday, making it the highest finish the Blue Devils have ever had at the meet. Five Duke wrestlers placed in the top six of their weight classes, with redshirt freshman John Barone leading the way with a third place finish at the 174 pound weight class. This was Duke‰¥ús fourth meet of the season, and did not count towards their record because it was an open meet with multiple teams competing in a tournament format. åÊBarone only lost to eventual tournament champion Doug Umbehauer of Rider University on the way to his team-best third place finish. He tied for the tournament high with two pins, and is now 11-1 on the year. åÊåÊRedshirt junior captain Bryan Gibson took home fourth place in the 133 pound weight class, which was the deepest class in the tournament. Gibson missed out on third place by one point, as he lost an 8-7 decision to Columbia‰¥ús Matt Delorenzo, the number one seed in the tournament at 133 pounds. åÊåÊFreshman Voris Tejada had a strong showing, finishing in fifth place at 133 pounds. Tejada lost twice in one point decisions to top-seeded Mike Kessler of Rider University, and then defeated fifth-seeded Damien Sweitlik of American University to clinch fifth place. åÊåÊRedshirt sophomore Dan Fox also placed fifth, in the 184 pound weight class, and junior captain Kellan McKeon finished sixth as a 125 pound competitor. McKeon won three close matches after losing a close contest with eventual champion and number one seed Matt Eveleth of the University of Pennsylvania. åÊåÊJunior Wes Kuser (141 lbs.), sophomore Addison Nuding (157 lbs.), redshirt freshman Ben Wales (157 lbs.), freshman Mat Koelling (165 lbs.), redshirt sophomore Aaron Glover (165 lbs.), redshirt sophomore Dan Tulley (184 lbs.), and Patrick Keenum (197 lbs.) all competed in the meet as well. ‰¥þWe should have done even better at the tournament,‰¥ÿ said Coach Clar Anderson. ‰¥þDan Tulley, Wes Kuser, and Addison Nuding all had challenging draws. They competed very well, but came up a little short.åÊAll three were capable of placing and I thought they would.åÊBoth Tulley and Kuser placed last year.åÊThey will use this to motivate themselves for our next competition.

Long Day for ASU at Hoosier DualsåÊ by ASU Sports Information

Nov. 25, 2006 - BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--Appalachian State came into the Hoosier Duals looking to build on its good start to the season, but suffered only setbacks as the Mountaineers went 0-5 on Saturday.åÊ The lone bright spot for ASU on the day was 133-pounder Terreyl Williams' continuance of his undefeated season. Williams went 5-0, including scoring a major decision and a technical fall, to go to 10-0 overall on the season. The day began with a rout on Mat 1 against eventual tournament champ Indiana, which finished 5-0 in team standings. Williams and heavyweight Dave Hazell scored the only victories for ASU against the Hoosiers, Hazell by pin, as IU took a 38-9 victory.åÊåÊ ASU then dropped a heartbreaker to Cumberland, 22-20. A 2-0 decision by Eric Flinchum over Hazell clinched it for Cumberland as the Mountaineers saw their day start 0-2.åÊ Against Ohio in the third match, Terreyl Williams posted the only victory in a 34-3 loss. The long day continued as Bucknell downed ASU, 32-12.åÊåÊ Oregon bested the Apps in the last match of the day, 31-10. Decisions by Tommy Hutchinson and Neal Martin in addition to a Williams major decision wasn't enough for the Mountaineers to overcome the Ducks.
