Here are some stats for you: There are 267,378 h.s. wrestlers in the US, ranking the sport #6 among boys nationwide. This # has increased for 5 straight years. There are 10,311 h.s. teams.
For those of you in N.C., here are two good opportunities to see a college match:
1) On February 13 NC State will host Virginia at 11:00 and then Virginia Tech at 1:00 at Reynolds Coliseum on campus. They usually don't charge admission, so you get two for the price of none! Hopefully NCAA champ Darion Caldwell will be in the line-up for State. He's really something to watch.
2) State will host the ACC Tournament on March 6th.
- I was interviewed recently by Scott Casber of Intermatwrestle.com/TakedownRadio.com regarding my novel and the importance of the sport of wrestling. It's available at either website. Apparently it will also play on about 20 radio stations in places like Iowa where there's enough people who want to listen to a wrestling radio show.

Four-time state champion David Taylor (135) of St. Paris (Ohio) Graham High was named to the First Team for the third consecutive year and junior Logan Stieber (125) of Monroeville (Ohio) High also earned a repeat selection to the 14-member First Team as the 24th annual ASICS All-America Wrestling Team was announced today.
- The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible. ASICS is a title sponsor of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Fargo Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels.
- “This team represents the best of the best in our schools today,” said Neil Duncan and Nick Gallo of ASICS and TW Promotions, Inc. “We are proud to have these young men, with their talent and work ethic, representing us. They are clearly the World and Olympic champions of the future.”
- Members of the First Team, as well as the ASICS Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior National Freestyle Championships in July at Fargo, N.D.
- The ASICS All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes – the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. Wrestlers are considered at the weight class at which they competed in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year.
- This year’s First Team includes a record eight underclassmen – seven juniors and one sophomore. Stieber, a three-time Ohio Division 3 state champion, could join Taylor as a three-time First Team member next member.
- Also named were two-time National Prep champion Chris Villalonga (130) of Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy, whose senior teammate, National Prep champion Edward Ruth, also was named to the team at 171; two-time state champions Devin Carter (112) of Christiansburg (Va.) High, Jamie Clark (119) of Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward High, Dylan Alton (145) of Mill Hall (Pa.) Central Mountain High and Marshall Peppelman (152) of Harrisburg (Pa.) Central Dauphin High; Andrew Alton (140), twin brother of Dylan, who won his first state title this year; and sophomore state champion Nick Brascetta (103) of Graham.
- Chris Perry (189) of Stillwater (Okla.) High joined Taylor as four-time state champions on the First Team. Seniors Jake Kemerer (160) of Greensburg (Pa.) Hempfield High 2X Champ and Eloheim Palma (285) of Cary (N.C.) High (State Champion 3X) and Tony Nelson (215) of Cambridge (Minn.) Cambridge-Isanti High won his first state title this year.
- Blair Academy led all schools with seven overall selections, including two First Team and two Third Team selections. Graham and Central Mountain had two First Team members each, and Graham was second to Blair Academy with four overall selections. Monroeville had three selections. Seven other schools had two: Central Dauphin, St. Edward, Eureka (Mo.) High, Perry (Okla.) High, Rio Rancho (N.M.) and Troy (N.Y.) LaSalle Institute each had two wrestlers selected. The team also includes three brother combinations. In addition to the Altons, Logan Stieber was joined by sophomore brother Hunter (119), along with senior twins Nick (152) and Matt Lester (160) of Eureka.
- The 14 First Team members combined to post 29 state high school or National Prep championships, along with six Junior National and six Cadet National titles. The Second and Third Teams rival the First Team. The Second Team combined for 36 state or National Prep titles, including a five-time champion, two four-time champions and three three-time champions, to go with three Junior National and seven Cadet National titles. The Third Team boasts 24 combined state titles, two Junior National and three Cadet National crowns.
- Pennsylvania and Ohio each had four First Team selections. Pennsylvania placed 19 wrestlers on the squad, including eight on the top three teams. Ohio’s 10 top-three selections topped all states, and Ohio and New Jersey each had 14 overall selections. New York was next with eight selections, followed by California (seven), Missouri (six), Oklahoma (five) and Illinois (four). The 112 wrestlers selected come from 29 states.

North Carolina Wrestling Coach Jerry Winterton 2007-08 NHSCA "Coach of the Year"
Coach Jerry Winterton's wrestling career started in 1961 as a fifth grader in a small town about 35 miles outside of Syracuse, NY on the advice of his older brother Jim. (Jim Winterton is presently in the National Hall of Fame in Houston, Texas for the sport of Racquetball, having coached the USA Racquetball team for over 10 years).
- This 10 year old was not a star or a natural, but soon understood that wrestling was a sport he could compete in if he was willing to handle the anguish the daily beatings and setbacks. Soon after these elementary intramural programs Jerry was starting as a 9th grader in the smallest of weight classes, 95 lbs for Rod Little and Ed Patrica's VVS High School a team in central New York. The wrestling that he was exposed to in these high school years and under coaches Bob Guzzo (at a junior college on the Canadian border) and Don Murray at Brockport State also in New York laid the foundation of the philosophies and skills to be passed on later.
- After college Jerry would teach and coach at his former high school with Rod Little and then was fortunate to land a position as a assistant coach with the Wolfpack of North Carolina State University. Bob Guzzo, who had coached Jerry in NY, was a new coach at the school and building what would soon be one of the best programs on the East Coast.
- Although Jerry had planned to return to New York and coach in college he continued his career at the high school level and after a few years at a nearby school began a long coaching stint at Cary High School where he is presently in his 25th season.
- Some of Jerry's accomplishments include, 18 State championships, 26 consecutive district titles, 16 consecutive regional titles, and a overall career record which sits at 572-33 at this time. His 153 individual tournament titles is the most in the nation all-time for high school coaches as acknowledged by Wrestling USA magazine. Another accomplishment is the National Runner-Up for Wrestling USA's Coach of the year that occurred in 1987.
- Jerry was recently elected to the State Chapter of "The National Hall of Fame" located in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Coach Winterton credits his success to his experiences on a dairy farm as a youngster.. Jerry's parents, Margaret and Stewart raised four boys, Jim, Joe, Jerry, Jack and one girl Kathy on this farm all of whom would graduate from college and be leaders in their respective fields. Jerry also credits a strong coaching staff with Nathanial Scott, Randy Scussel, and former assistant club coach of the year (USA Wrestling Magazine) Stan Chambers being some past assistants. Present assistants Nick Ivkovich, Matt Warden, Tom Barry, Aaron Tecklenburg, Brad Kreiner, are also praised for the success of the Cary Wrestling Program, which was ranked in the top five in the southeast and won both State Championships in 2007 and 2008.
- When asked about career highlights Jerry is quick to point to his eldest son Logan who won a State Championship with his dad in the corner in 2004. Logan wrestled at Appalachian State University and is now serving his country as a United States Marine in Iraq. Daughter Amber was a varsity 3-sport athlete at Cary High School and now attends NC State, while the youngest of Jerry's children, Ronnie is currently 32-5 as a varsity wrestler for his dad.

This is the best magazine for covering High School Wrestling. In this latest addition Eloheim Palma is ranked as the fifth best HWY senior in the nation and Gabe Brotzman is #30 at 152.. As many of you know Eloheim was ranked overall for all classes 9-12, 3rd by another great magazine, Win Magazine. Ranking kids is tough and in Eloheim's case, he didn't go to Fargo so that may explain the fifth ranking. At any rate to be in the top 50 in the country is unbelievable and a great honor. Many times there is not much difference in the top 30 kids, with kids beating up on each other making it tough to rank. Last year in all the major rankings Justin Koren who was an All-American for us (fifth in senior nationals and 7th? in sophomores, in 06') had beaten the numbers 4th,7th,8th ranked kids plus the national runner-up during the season and another wrestling mag.(AWN) ranked him 10th. Gabe's big wins in the summer over a PA. State champ and national greco runner-up no doubt helped him. Also, he lost to nail biters to the #4 ranked kid at 145 lbs. Ben Creed 103,soph. and Matt Colvard 145 lb. junior will be ranked in issues coming up soon.
The kids on our recent teams have to feel honored as do the coaches, to have wrestled (and coached) on the same teams with the likes of: Thomas Ferguson, nationally ranked and pre-season national champion defeating Brandon's 3-tome Fla. State Champ, Nick Koren All-American and like Thomas a two-time State Champ. Joey Farnsworth, who was ranked in the top three several times, was the only kid in recent times to wrestle over 60 matches in a season and not give up a point of wrestling. Only one point on a bogus figure four to the head call. Joey was on the dream team as the #1 USA true 103 lber in the country. Brendon Parker-Risk, and Lawrence White both State Champs and who each took out State Champs at Nationals, including Lawrence beating a 3-time and nationally ranked Missouri State Champ. Brendon lost on a bad call 6-4 to the #4 ranked kid or would've been in the quarters. This is not to mention the Dixon's, Hoerdemanns, Wangs, Harrichaks, Logans, Brownlee's, Jahads, Jainor's, etc that have wrestled in college and for us since 2003, plus Finneran, Fryer, who both won States. As I said the wrestlers lately are working harder and it's paying off.
Right now we have 7 guys wrestling in college and as far as I know one All-Southern Conference Baseball player in Cory Harrilchak (Elon) and one playing FB at Duke that being Trevor Dixon.
My point of all of this is that this is a great magazine to put themselves out there ranking kids across state lines. There are many interesting wrestling articles in there along with technique and on and on.
I know most of my wrestlers have subscriptions but just wanted to make the rest of you aware of this opportunity before the season kicks up and you get too busy and miss out.
Thanks and congrats to Gabe and Eloheim. They will be ranking 9th,10th,11th graders soon.
Thanks, Coach Winterton
PS: Matt, Ben, Cordale, Ronnie, Harrison, send in some results and maybe you can improve your ranking......Or send it to me and I'll send it in. thanks, Coach
Correction on the Disney Duals Memo
- There is one correction to the Disney Duals memo I sent out. The website had Lawrence White and Corey Mock's records wrong. They had recorded the win as a loss for Lawrence White and vica-versa for Corey. It should be like this:
-
- Lawrence White was 11-1, wrestled for Arrichion and is from Cary HS & rec'd a silver medal
- Corey Mock was 9-3 wrestled for Team NC is from Chapel Hill and rec'd a copper medal
-
- Thanks, Coach Winterton

- Wow!! Anthony Dunbar did a great job putting all of the below together!! Thanks, enjoy checking it out...We will try and get the rest of the guys stuff added to this soon.
There are several matches on flowrestling.org that have cary kids wrestling in them. All they have to do is go to the site and click on senior nationals then go to select state and pick NC. All the matches from kids from NC will be on there. They can do the same for freshman thru juniors. To find the brackets go to the site for either 9th, 10th etc and stroll down, way down past some hotel info looking for brackets. You have to look for it but it's there.
I want to emphasize I was in a hurry yesterday when I sent this stuff out. I didn't mention what a great tourney Matt Colvard had! He was top 12 in his weight, lost 6-4 in the round to be All American. His only losses were to All Americans!! Please check his matches out below.

Justin Koren Just Made All American by Placing 5th in the Country at the NHSCA Senior Nationals
- Justin Koren just made All American by placing 5th in the country at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Koren's bracket is on the website at the NHSCA.com website. I believe he won 6 matches and lost 2. We just finished. Justin will walk tonight in the parade of champions and collect his statue and head back to NC.
Eloheim Palma lost in the finals after running through his side of the bracket. A controversal no call lead to the defeat in the double tie-breaker in his final match. I'm not sure but think you can view a couple of Eloheim's matches on flowrestling.com Eloheim went 5-1.
Cary was well represented as several underclassmen won matches and Cary may have been the only school to have a Junior in the finals and three seniors in the round of 16 at the end of Friday's matches.
Lawrence White won four hard fought matches beating a 4-time Missouri State Champ in the second round before being bumped out. Brendon Parker-Risk lost in the round of 16 to a finalist at the buzzer. Both Lawrence and Brendon were very close to the All American status.
Again, if you go to the website, you may be able to see what accomplishments the wrestlers had that we have wrestled this week, It's quite impressive.
I'll try and give you a better wrap up when I get back in town.
Nick Gregoris placed fourth at 160. Nick and Justin were the only two senior All-Americans for North Carolina and Eloheim Palma placed the highest of all Juniors with the second place finish. Corey Mock placed 7th at 125 Juniors. Both Gregoris and Mock wrestle for Chapel Hill HS.
Thanks, Coach Winterton

Selected as the 2007 National Coach of The Year-NHSCA
The 2006-2007 will long be remembered not only as one of Cary's best but one of North Carolina's best. Twelve seniors lead the way and will surely be missed. Luke Wallace, Casey Peterson, Shashant Shah, Chip Reap, and Jimmy O'Brien all made great contributions to the success of this year's run to both titles, duals and individuals. Luke worked out as Sophomore State Champion Eloheim Palma's personal workout partner, while the others all were very experienced technical wrestlers who helped groom our younger wrestlers. Peterson and Shah place 1st and 2nd respectively in the Westover tourney, while Luke defeated a ranked wrestler during the season. These seniors would've started for any other team and were a great assest to our underclassmen.
The season started out with tourney wins at Westover and Orange. These were followed by a trip to New York State to compete in the Tri-Valley Tournament. 25 teams from four different New York Sections would be there to try and win over a very tough field. Sections II (Queensbury, LaSalle, Ballston Spa), V (Wayne), IV (Tioga) and III (Mexico), all had teams in the tourney that would finish the season ranked in the top two of their section! In NY a section has approx. 80 schools in it so this was one of the premier tourneys in the State. Cary got on one of it's 07' patented rolls and bulldozed the consolation rounds to a 99 point victory. This was truly a trip the team will long remember and was still being talked about at New York States in early March.
From here the wrestlers went on to defend their title at The Tiger Classic, the toughest tourney in North Carolina again winning large over Ragsdale (3A Runner-up) and Jesuit, La. (#1 ranked in La.) plus 25 other strong teams. The wins in these two tourneys, NY and Tiger, pushed Cary into the #2 spot in the United States SE Region and #25 nationally as ranked by Wrestling USA Magazine.
January the schedule lightened up some with wins in the East Burke and Millbrook dual tourneys and then a victory at the Miller-Mott tourney was followed by some more duals with the meeting with Rival Riverside lurking ahead in the State Duals.
All 14 Cary Wrestlers were named All-Conference and even more amazingly all made the conference finals in the Tri-8 tournament. This feat was followed by the state duals where Cary met up with Riverside in the East Semi-Finals at Jack Britt High School on a Thursday in early Feb. A tense match up as this was #1 vs #2 in the 4A state of NC. going at it. Cary prevailed and followed with a pretty large win over Eastern Regional Champions Jack Britt. This set up the state final with West Forsyth who had eliminated the west competition of Mt. Tabor, Davie Co. etc. On Feb. 10th a near capacity Cary crowd witnessed the largest point total and margin of victory ever occurring in the history of NC State duals regardless of state classification. 53-9 was the final count thanks to three wrestlers coming from behind to pull off victories, Gabe Brotzman, Tommy Freeman, and Khang Nguyen. While Brotzman knocked off the #1 ranked (and 4A state champ) both Tommy and Khang kept the crowd buzzing as all three had unbelievable efforts to win in the final seconds. Lawrence White won again and with his 5-0 dual meet record for the week and beating a #1 wrestler and also a Riverside future 4A state champ he was awarded Co-MOW along with brotzman for the State Tourney Duals.
Next up..defending the Regional title for the 15th consecutive year. This is quite a record when you think about there are only four regions in the state and the ME regional is generally considered the toughest in the State. In recent years it's featured #1 and #2 Riverside or Cary in any order. This year Cary advanced 11 wrestlers to the State Individual tourney with a great effort at Chapel Hill HS, setting up a chance to run the table for the season.
North Carolina States were not a given as both Mt. Tabor and Riverside were in it after the 1st day. Cary would have to depend on the wrestle-backs and semis to pull out the win. The semis went fairly well with four of five winning and only Long Wang's tough fought bout with Sparrow (4-Time Champion) as the only set-back. The key now was the wrestle-backs. Cary copied the 06' format and burnt through the consolation brackets, in fact three wrestlers, Hoerdemann, Dixon and White all defeated wrestlers that had beaten them earlier on Friday! Everyone of the 11 wrestlers scored important points with Hoerdemann 5th, Wang and White 4th, and Dixon and Parker-Risk placing 3rd.
Amazingly, for the third time (98', 00' being the others) Cary had all four finalist win! Joey Farnsworth, Justin Koren, Thomas Ferguson and Eloheim Palma all went into the tourney ranked #1 in their weight classes and made sure to prove the prognosticators correct with big wins.
The teammates from this team will long remember what a truly special group of guys they were a part of. From the 1st year, 9th grade wrestler to the senior star everyone will remember the Joey's, Thomas's, Trevor's, Long's, Sam's, Tommy's and Khang's that made these seniors so different talent-wise as well as personality-wise. Some top individual performances were:
Joey's 63-0 record, never giving up a takedown, a reversal, a escape, back points, cautions, stallings, etc. An unbelievable record that you teammates got to witness first-hand. Also, Joey's pub-run of newspapers, Sports Illustrated, etc. being the #1 senior at 103 in the nation and being selected to the Dream team!
Thomas's 133-2 record in his last two years at Cary. His two Pre-Season National Championships, his super duck, winning two State Titles a earning a scholarship to North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Sam's pinning. 43 pins tied him with Joey as the team's leader, he had four in the State tournament. It was always exciting watching Sam tear into his opponent.
Trevor's repeat of last years Saturday run. Placing 4th and 3rd in the state both years beating people who had beat him earlier. His inside trip...bar arm
Long's will to win and turning it up a notch at the end of the season. Being a 3X state qualifier and having his hard work pay off with a 4th place finish
Watching Tommy and Khang compete, Tommy always out-weighed throwing legs, Khang always battling and winning most, reaching the Orange finals and being robbed up in NY vs a NY state runner-up.
Underclassmen, Justin Koren, NHSCA All-American and now State Champ, Brendon Parker-Risk, two-time state placer, Gabe Brotzman, 2X qualifier and 6th place, Lawrence White, 4th placer and Eloheim Palma Cary's first Heavyweight Champion and Cary's first Sophomore State Champion all were fun to watch and sure to be in the mix of Cary's run for the title in 08'
