Jim Mason at <mailto:JMASON@echs.carteret.k12.nc.us>JMASON@echs.carteret.k12.nc.us Exciting news on the college front. A new team will be started at Saint Andrews Presbyterian in Laurinburg just west of UNC-Pembroke. They will enter NCAA D-II competition in the 2006-2007 season. The TDR has contacted other colleges in North Carolina to encourage them to re-start or start a team. Winston-Salem State Univ. and North Carolina Central Univ. are looking to move up to NCAA D-I in all sports and will need to add some. Why not wrestling? It would help if others contacted them and encouraged this.

TDR Editor,
I continue to receive your reports and newsletter and I am continually impressed with the information you provide. Your work appears to take a tremendous effort on your end and I'm not sure if you have young ones still wrestling but it wouldn't surprise me too discover you do this for the love of the sport.
I have included the remainder of our series schedule and a press release that you may find interesting for our sport. We have been fortunate to be picked up by a television giant, Altitude Sports Network. It will prove to the nation that wrestling belongs right along side the other major amateur sports like football, basketball and baseball. Hope you can find room in your schedule to allow RMN Events to be part of your newsletter. God Bless you and your family,

White Oak wrestlers win title for teammate Dec. 12,2005 BY <http://www.jacksonvilledailynews.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Stories.cfm&ByReporter=STAFF%20REPORTS&Section=SPORTS>STAFF REPORTS
STAFF REPORTS White Oak's wrestling team had more to compete for than just pride and prestige Saturday at the 10th annual Eagle Invitational Tournament at Rosewood High School at Goldsboro.
They were wrestling to help heal a teammate's broken heart. After learning that senior Kyle Askins' mother had passed away Thursday morning, the Vikings and coach Ray Bruno decided to dedicate this tournament to their standout at 136 pounds, who is taking some time off from wrestling. Askins placed at state a year ago. The decision paid off when the Vikings captured the team championship, scoring 198 points to finish ahead of Eastern Wayne 184 and Southern Wayne 171 . "There were a lot of kids close to Kyle wrestling with a heavy heart," said Bruno. "But they decided to make this a team effort and that was how we won it. "We didn't have an individual champion and we couldn't have won it without our kids who didn't place but won two or three matches and had pins to build up points. The kids really did a great job under the circumstances." It was the pins and consistency that brought the Vikings their championship. "I think we set a White Oak record for pins in a tournament," said Bruno. "That really helped us pointwise. We probably won 85 percent of our matches by pin. "We went up there to win the tournament. We thought we could do it and we wanted to do it for Kyle. We just wanted to show him how much we miss him." James Krueger was the only Viking in the finals, losing by pin to Eastern Wayne's Travis Turner, who was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler. "That was impressive for James, to wrestle like that in a loaded tournament," said Bruno. Earning third place for the Vikings were: Ryan Mosczienski, who decisioned Wilson Fike's Rafael Drake, 6-2, in the consolation finals; Aaron Johnston, who pinned Northern Pitt's Mark Harris in 1:35 at 125 pounds; Tyler Marva, who pinned South Central's Quentin Godley in 2:27 at 152 pounds and 160-pounder Maurice Moreese, who defeated South Central's Calvin Barnes, 12-9, in his consolation final. Johnston wrestled especially well for the Vikings, winning all four of his matches by pin and losing in the semifinals by only one point with two seconds left to the eventual champion. Bruno also had praise for Marva, a sophomore out for his first season. "He won all of his matches by pin and was really dominating," said Bruno. "He's very experienced but he wrestled very well." The Vikings also got fourth-place finishes from James Millar at 130 pounds and heavyweight James Fischer. "You got to mention kids at other weights who won us two and three matches," said Bruno, who had to go without a 146-pounder because of a late illness. "Larry Wingate at 119 had three wins; freshman Cody Noll was 2-2 and another first-year wrestler, Ben Culpepper, was also 2-2. "The kids just did a great job. They were very aggressive and that's how we got all those pins. They really came through for us." The Vikings will visit Hoggard Tuesday for a Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference match and then compete in the prestigious WRAL Tournament in Raleigh Saturday before the Christmas break.
Dixon wrestlers: Dixon also competed in the Rosewood tournament, placing 14th out of the 21 teams.
The Bulldogs were led by Tony Miller, who was the champion at 119 pounds.
Pirates compete: Swansboro had three wrestlers take third place in the annual Beast of the East Tournament at Croatan High. Brandon Foley defeated Jacksonville's Adam Justice, 6-4, in the 119-pound consolation final; Sean Waddell decisioned First Flight's Shaun Gregory, 14-0, at 130 pounds and Frankie Baker edged New Hanover's Anthony Caison at 171 pounds. The Pirates finished eighth out of the 18 teams. West Carteret won the championship with 207 points and Havelock was second at 183.6. Croatan was third with 177 points. <http://www.jacksonvilledailynews.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Details.cfm&StoryID=37238&Section=SPORTS>http://www.jacksonvilledailynews.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Details.cfm&StoryID=37238&Section=SPORTS

Richlands posted wins in all but two weight classes en route to a non-conference wrestling victory over Lejeune Monday aboard Camp Lejeune. The Wildcats recorded three pins in the victory, which upped their record to 2-0. "We had some tough matches," Richlands assistant coach David Pelsang said. "Coach (Tom) Childs always brings a good team." The Wildcats will wrestle at Dixon on Thursday.

West Craven remains winless after losing squeaker to S. Central
VANCEBORO - West Craven's wrestling team forfeited four matches in its dual meet with South Central and still almost came away with its first win of the season, but it came down to the final match and South Central (6-2 overall, 1-0 Coastal 8) squeaked by for its first conference win in the Coastal 8 Conference.
The Eagles (0-2, 0-1) led 39-30 with two matches remaining, but forfeited their final match at 130, meaning the Falcons' Kyle Gehn had to pin the Eagles' Mike Saul in the 125 weight class to win - and that's exactly what Gehn did in 3 minutes and 13 seconds to give the Falcons the 42-39 win. Initially, Saul had Gehn on the ropes in the early moments of the first period, but Gehn flipped Saul over and took over from there. Saul escaped, but was put on his back again, giving Gehn an 8-5 lead at the end of the first period. Early into the second period, Gehn out-muscled Saul, this time getting the pin and giving his team the win. Falcons head coach Dennis Marshall credited Gehn for his composure, especially since Gehn is a freshman. Marshall noted his team's youth as the Falcons have six freshman in the starting lineup. "It was kind of nerve wracking because you've got a freshman in a spot (to win)," Marshall said. Down 24-9 in the match, the Eagles battled back with five pins in six matches to give them the 39-30 lead with the help of Jeremy Brown (189), Jamaine Moore (215), Keenan Johnson (103), Jeremy Bryce (112) and Daniel Reich (119). Reich's pin was the quickest of the match as he finished off Jerrod Wood in 18 seconds, setting the score at 39-30. The Eagles' Drew Stephens pinned Bryon Jenkins in 1:31 in the 135 weight class and Willis McCaw won 19-14 over Alex Brickman at 145. Eagles coach Mike Matlock said Wednesday's match was the best thus far and said his team will win when it cuts down on technical mistakes. Unfortunately, Matlock said, that happens frequently with a young squad - and that's what the Eagles have. "Every competition that we go to, you can see improvement in the guys," Matlock said. "The people that won fought hard and the people that lost fought hard. I'm very pleased with their effort and their fight." Marshall credited the Matlock for his work with the Eagles. "He's got a good program. He always has," Marshall said.

Eagles young and inexperienced November 26,2005 BY <http://www.newbernsunjournal.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Stories.cfm&ByReporter=Jeremy%20Slayton&Section=Sports>Jeremy Slayton Sun Journal
VANCEBORO - As West Craven wrestling coach Mike Matlock studies his team, he sees a very young one. "We're very much a freshman team," Matlock said. Of the 15 players that came out for the team, only three are returning - Bryan Small (215), Jamaine Moore (189) and Dan Reich (119). Matlock said it was going to take Moore some time to get down to 189 from his football playing weight. The biggest holes the Eagles need to fill are the departures of Jon Fulcher and Rusty Nobles, a pair of state qualifiers that graduated in the spring. Despite the youth of the team, Matlock has been impressed with what he's seen from his team during early season practices. "The biggest strength is they have a lot of heart and are willing to learn," Matlock said. "It's like I told them last week, I can live with rookie mistakes. They are trying to grasp the new stuff â? and be better next year." Some of the freshmen are already showing signs of promise, as Matlock indicated Drew Stephens (135) and Mike Saul as newcomers that will help the team. Saul will either wrestle in the 119 or 125 weight class. Matlock isn't setting the bar high for his young wrestlers, only wanting to make sure the grapplers continue to get better. "Not make mistakes and get themselves beat," Matlock said. "If they keep making good progress, I'll be happy." The Eagles don't have an easy task in the newly-formed Coastal 8 4-A/3-A Conference which has powerful teams like Havelock, West Carteret and New Bern. Matlock said D.H. Conley is supposedly loaded and is a dark horse to win the league title. "It should be a four-team dogfight between those schools," Matlock said. For now though, Matlock is expecting his Eagles to maybe surprise some teams they face throughout the season. "Fight for respectability," he said. "By that, I mean for them to have progressed enough that they believe they can do something."

Rams eyeing conference title Nov. 26,2005 BY <http://www.newbernsunjournal.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Stories.cfm&ByReporter=Jeremy%20Slayton&Section=Sports>Jeremy Slayton Sun Journal
HAVELOCK - The Havelock wrestling team has a tradition of being one of the top programs in the state.
In order to live up to that this year, the Rams need some of the younger wrestlers to step up. Havelock boasts only three returning state qualifiers in Nathan Fennell (112), Melvin Whitehurst (135) and Lennis Frazier (heavyweight). Whitehurst and Fennell have both moved up a weight class from a year ago, while a slimmed down Frazier remains the same. In addition to the trio of returning qualifiers, Havelock head coach Ed Cruz expects seniors K.C. Falls and Ken Roberts to step up. "They'll provide a lot of leadership and wins on the mat too," Cruz said. Cruz went on to say the 119, 130 and 140-pound weight classes are question marks early in the season. "What I see happening is maybe struggling a little bit at the beginning of the season, and as those kids learn â? they'll be picking it up by mid-season," Cruz said. Other wrestlers that Cruz expects good seasons from are Stuart Griffiths (125) and Henry Steinman (152). The Rams won both the Big East regular season title and tournament title last year, but fell in the dual team tournament to Cary for the third year in a row. This year, Havelock won't have to worry about facing the Imps, because the Rams dropped down to the 3-A classification and compete in the Coastal 8 4-A/3-A Conference. Havelock is still aiming for a conference title. "Our first goal is to always win the conference. On paper, that looks like us, West Carteret and New Bern," Cruz said. West Carteret and Havelock have waged some close battles in the last two years, with the Rams holding a 2-1 advantage in 2003-04, while the Patriots had the 2-1 edge in the 2004-05 season. In the Fall Beach Brawl at West Carteret, the Patriots won the tournament with Havelock in second place. "Neither one of us can dominate the other team," Cruz said. "So, it's going to be a real close match with them. They're replacing some key people also." Beyond the dual team tournament, Cruz said he is looking to qualify eight or nine wrestlers for the state tournament in February. Cruz said the strength of the Rams line up comes in the heavier weight classes, with Whitehurst and Fennell anchoring the lower classes. "This year, from 152 and up, everybody is returning except for one kid," Cruz said. "We're still very experienced up there." opportunities to be engaged in campus activities and participate
in intercollegiate athletics, added St. Andrews President John

of athletes, both on the mat and in the classroom, and at St.
Andrews we celebrate scholar-athletes. This latest addition to
our athletics program is one more step in the process of growing
our College in the right direction." Wrestling will add
approximately 30 student-athletes to St. Andrews, who will compete

Indians secure one for the record book defeating Limestone 27-11
NEWBERRY, S.C. The Newberry wrestling team earned their first dual meet win of its inaugural season defeating the Saints of Limestone College. Winning seven of the ten match ups the Indians came away with a score of 27-11. Several solid performances were the key to Newberry,s victory. Riddled with injuries at the lower weights, many freshmen were asked to step up for the team. With great expectations for this season, hard work and resilience are a must and that is what was displayed tonight. "We have been able to overcome injuries by asking others to step up," stated head coach <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=425>Jason Valek. "The guys have been working hard in practice and it shows in the way that they wrestled tonight. This was our first win as a Division II program and there will be many more to come. Limestone came out to an early lead with a 16-0, 6:36, technical fall during the 125 lb weight class. <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=787>Alvin Simmons (133) answered the Saints win with one of his own, beating Matt Ross of Limestone 6-1 to pick up his first win of the season. At the 141 lb weight class <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=773>Chris Allen took on Robby Miskelly of Limestone. Allen,s early dominance proved not to be enough when plagued with injury. Miskelly went on to control the third period finishing the match with a score of 10-5. As with Allen, <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=786>Clay Gray (149) started the match with great force early on, accumulating a significant amount of riding in the first period, but the second belonged to Limestone,s Joey Federspiel. Down 2-5 entering the third period with riding time no longer in his favor, the match began to heat up once again. With a takedown, Gray brought the match within grasps, but with an escape, penalty point, and riding time Federspiel put three more points on the board for Limestone. Coming off a great weekend against NC State and The Citadel, <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=772>Brandon Kelly (157) was ready to improve his ready to 3-0, which he did beating Greg Satterfield of Limestone 20-6. Kelly came out firing with a takedown in the first ten seconds. He followed that up with four more, along with two sets of near-fall points in the first period alone. With three more takedowns and a riding time point coming his way, Kelly finished the match strong putting four more team points on the board for Newberry. A close match at 165 lbs inched Newberry to within one point of Limestone. <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=794>Alonso Azumendi battled to a 7-5 decision over the Saints' Joby Shreckhise. Azumendi improved his record to 2-1 on the season, with 174 lb Indian wrestler <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=417>Quinn Tolbert doing the same. Aggressive from the start, Tolbert dominated the entire match. Accumulating almost four minutes of riding time, he defeated Miles Carey of Limestone with a 16-6 major decision. Taking note from their teammates, <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=767>Leighton Ellis (184) and <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=770>Dave Bush (197) picked up their first wins of the season. Ellis controlled his match against Mike Walsh of Limestone College to pick up a major decision with a score of 14-6. In the 197lb bout it was the Saints' Rob Sater who was the first to score. Bush, however, took the lead at the start of the second, and led the action in the third to come away with a 7-3 decision. With Newberry leading 21-11 going into the heavyweight match the Indians had the win secured. This did not affect <http://newberryindians.athleticsite.com/profile.asp?playerID=760>Kelly Anundson,s performance though, as he initiated the action through the first two periods. With Anundson up 15-4 the match was called due to stalling penalties, forty-two seconds into the third period. The disqualification put six more points on the board for the Indians in their 27-11 victory over the Saints of Limestone College.

Croatan wins annual Swiss Bear tournament Dec. 04,2005 BY <http://www.newbernsunjournal.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Stories.cfm&ByReporter=Jeremy%20Slayton&Section=Sports>Jeremy Slayton Sun Journal
Heading into the final two weight classes, the Havelock Rams were in a position to win the 19th annual Swiss Bear wrestling tournament at New Bern High School Saturday. Rams head coach Ed Cruz said his team needed two pins at 215 and heavyweight in order to win the title, but things didn't work out that way.
Havelock 215-pounder Ryan George was leading Croatan's Tyler Brownlow, 2-0, heading into the third period, but Brownlow took control in the final period to win the match by a 9-4 decision.
The match was critical as the Cougars won the tournament with 170 points, while Havelock finished second with 158.5, edging Coastal 8 Conference foe West Carteret by five points. D.H. Conley claimed fourth, followed by New Bern in fifth in the 11-team field. "We were real happy with our ending performance. In the middle, we were a little shaky," Croatan head coach David Perry said. "It's always nice to win a good tournament like this against good competition." The Rams had five wrestlers in the championship finals with 112-pounder Nathan Fennell and heavyweight Lennis Frazier emerging victorious. Fennell was in control in his entire match against Southern Wayne's Doogie Niemond before registering the pin in the first period. Frazier went the distance in his match against Southern Wayne's Josh Robinson, prevailing 6-2, after scoring four points in the third to break a tie. "We wrestled very well, overall. Like always, at this point in the season, we found stuff we can work on." The Bears placed two wrestlers in the championship finals, coming away with a pair of second-place finishes. Clay Foret was pinned by Greenville Rose's Blake Goodall as time was winding down in the first period in the 160-pound class. In the 140-pound championship final, Croatan's Jake O'Laker won a 17-2 technical fall over New Bern's Donald Castelow. "I really can't complain. Of course, I'd like to have done better â? but as a young team, we probably did as well as we could do," New Bern head coach Tom Marsh said. Melvin Whitehurst took part in the one of the better championship matches of the day, battling D.H. Conley Corey Sly into overtime in the 135-pound class. However, Whitehurst made one mistake in the extra period, leading to a Sly takedown and the 7-5 win.
Cruz said Whitehurst is able to learn from that match, helping him down the road. In the 145-pound weight class, Havelock's Loren Boone faced off with West Carteret's Victor Hojilla, falling 9-1. Havelock claimed several third-place finishes, with David Henniger winning the 103 consolations and Brian Norris pinning Lee Rouse at 171 in the only finals match up between Havelock and New Bern. Daniel Castelow won third place in the 152-pound class for the Bears. In the 145 consolation finals, New Bern's Ryan Lansche and Roberto Roasrio were both awarded wins because Rosario had wrestled the allotted five matches in one day.
Havelock's Stuart Griffiths and New Bern's T.J. Banks finished fourth. The tournament afford Havelock and New Bern a look at possible match ups in the Coastal 8 Conference, with five teams from the league competing. "It's going to be real close. Everyone was missing people today. â? It's going to be a dogfight, no doubt about it," Cruz said.

Pirates finish 9th at wrestling tourney Dec. 04,2005 BY <http://www.jacksonvilledailynews.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Stories.cfm&ByReporter=STAFF%20REPORTS&Section=Sports>STAFF REPORTS
staff reportsNEW BERN - Swansboro finished with 53 points to finish in ninth place Saturday afternoon in the 11-team Swiss Bear wrestling tournament at New Bern High School. Croatan emerged as the champion with 170 points, followed by Havelock (158.5), West Carteret (153.5), DH Conley (114.5), New Bern (95), Topsail (77), Southern Wayne (69), JH Rose (59), Swansboro, Jacksonville (49) and Northside (47.5). The Pirates had a pair of second-place finishers. Brandon Foley was the runner-up in the 119-pound weight class. He ended the event with a record of 2-1, losing to Philip Cartwright of DH Conley in the final via a pin in 1 minute, 14 seconds. Emmanuel Del' Castillo was second at 125, winning two of his three matches. He fell to West Carteret's Paul D'elia, 11-6. Despite the ninth-place finish, Swansboro first-year head coach Joe Blackwell was pleased with his squad's effort. "I am really not disappointed because we didn't field a full team and we had to pull up a couple of J.V. kids to fill in spots," he said. "The flu season is killing the team."
Blackwell highlighted one particular outing by a freshman. "Travis Wyke at 112 wrestled real well," said Blackwell. "He will be an asset to our program for the next few years."

REPORTS
Staff reportPINETOPS - Finishing a close third in a 20-team wrestling tournament is usually enough to make White Oak head coach Ray Bruno enjoy his weekend. But unexpected results from two of his team leaders at the Pierce Davis Invitational at Southwest Edgecombe High School Friday was even more pleasing than the overall results. Aaron Johnston at 125 pounds and Jimmy Millar at 135 pounds both came away as individual champions out of tough weight classes. Each senior won all four of his matches. "I was pleased with our team but I was even happier with the how the two captains did," said Bruno Sunday. "Those two in particular really raised their level of expectations and now have really contributed to their records. "With the new draw in the Regional, wins like these could be very big down the road." Johnston also had the satisfaction of beating an old rival, besting Derek Lancaster of team champion C.B. Aycock, 5-3, in overtime. "This was probably his best performance of the year and he beat two quality wrestlers," said Bruno of the third-seeded Johnston. "He had to beat the No. 2 seed and then come right back to beat his old nemesis from Aycock. It was a solid performance." Millar also beat the top seed in the championship match at 135, stopping Washington's Sean Ward. "He had to beat a kid who placed at state last year," said Bruno. "It was a nice effort." White Oak also got a second place finish from junior Ryan Moszcienski at 105 pounds. The Vikings also picked up third place efforts from James Krueger at 171 pounds and Joe Foster at 215. James Fisher, a senior heavyweight, was fourth. Krueger had to wrestle five matches to earn his place. The Vikings finished only one point behind Eastern Wayne for third in the field. "It was pretty tough to do that on a long day of wrestling like that," said Bruno. "It was a good effort by the kids." White Oak will wrestle Swansboro in a dual match at home Weds. & then compete in the Rosewood Eagle Tournament Sat.

Warriors endure road loss
NEW BERN -- Eastern Wayne claimed five individual matches, including two pins, during a 54-24 non-conference loss Tuesday evening at perennial Class 4-A power New Bern. Sophomore 119-pounder Chris Tesar remained unbeaten in four outings with a 6-5 decision against Cameron Carter. Brian Lincoln pulled out a one-point decision at 160 pounds, while senior Travis Turner and heavyweight Brandon Johnson each pinned their respective opponent. Foy Coley earned a forfeit at 215 pounds. The Warriors (1-1) had seven first-year wrestlers in the lineup. New Bern benefited from youthful mistakes and raced to a 48-3 lead before Eastern Wayne claimed four of the evening's final five matches. The Warriors return to action Saturday in the Tarboro Turkey Invitational at Tarboro High.

Wayne County Area outlook By <http://www.newsargus.com/staff/rcoggins>Rudy Coggins, Published in Sports on Nov. 18, 2005 02:05 PM
During the offseason, it's not unusual to find wrestlers from Eastern Wayne and Charles B. Aycock competing for the same team, or rooting for each other on the mat. They joke around with each other and help scout respective opponents. Don't expect to see that during the high school season. These two teams have developed a highly-spirited rivalry that should reach a new pinnacle this season. The Warriors have their most-experienced team returning, including a trio of state qualifiers -- Chris Tesar, Travis Turner and x.
Meanwhile, the Golden Falcons have simply reloaded after reaching the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A dual-team eastern final a year ago. Coach Kevin Smith has eight starters back, including state placer Ngu Tran. "Somebody came up to me and said you might contend for the (Eastern Carolina) conference (title)," said eighth-year Warrior head coach Mike Brown. "I still don't think we have anything for Aycock. But, if the boys continue to work hard and get better, we should be able to wrestle with them this year. "I don't know if we can beat them or not. Last year, it was kind of a wash and I was hoping not to get skunked -- just win one or two matches. "This year, he's (Smith) going to have to think about us when we come (over)."
Eastern Wayne : Even with experienced starters in the mix and a full lineup, Brown remains cautiously optimistic. The Warriors opened their season with a 51-22 victory over Erwin Triton, which had eight freshmen in the starting lineup. "I'm looking for some good things from our young kids and the three returning state qualifiers," said Brown. "(There) are no big kids, but there are a lot of kids I can move around and maybe win one or two (matches) that way." Brown shuffled his lineup Tuesday due to wrestlers not making weight. While the change didn't prove critical against the inexperienced Hawks, Brown doesn't want it to become a habit. Senior Travis Turner posted a 44-win campaign last season and advanced to the NCHSAA Championships. Fellow senior Joey Burridge emerged a state qualifier as a sophomore, but suffered an injury-riddled junior season. He ran cross country during the fall to improve his endurance, and notched a 24-second pin Tuesday against Triton. Brown is also depending on contributions from junior Brian Lincoln, senior Brandon Johnson, senior Decarlos Jones, junior Detori Mitchell and sophomore Tyler Wicks. "I just hope the boys will keep working hard," said Brown.
C.B. Aycock : PIKEVILLE -- State-placers John Robertson and four-time ECC champion Turner Wood are gone. Most coaches would breathe a huge sigh of relief when they don't see that duo warm up this season. But opponents will still have their hands full. Five returning state qualifiers and eight returnees overall will be spaced throughout the Golden Falcon lineup. Ngu Tran placed fourth in the state a year ago. Also back are Drake Gurley, Derek Lancaster, Josh Overton, Ronald Lynn, Bryant Lancaster, Tim Harrison and Jason Steed. "All of these kids are experienced and know what it is going to take for them to meet our goals," said Smith, who enters the season with 94 career victories. "My expectations are for all of my returning starters to place (at state) and I'm sure they expect the same. "I don't expect us to come out of the gates quite as fast as we did last year." Smith and his staff are spending considerable time concentrating on technique in the wrestling room. While that takes away from physical conditioning, one of Aycock's many strengths on the mat, Smith is aware that countering moves is just as crucial to succeeding. A mixture of underclassmen could fill the voids left by Robertson, Wood and Randy Meisenheimer. Smith is hoping to see Steve Bentley, Jarrett Covar, senior Shane Lozier, Khiry Reid and several sophomores produce during each dual-team match. "Our expectations are always high," said Smith. "We are still wanting a state title over here pretty bad. We have a lot of work to do to get there, but we certainly have the ability to do so if every one does his part to improve to entire season."
Rosewood : The cupboard has never been bare during Bill Edmundson's career at Rosewood, but he says the "season will be very lean" for the Eagles. Just two state qualifiers -- Jim Bish and Matt Davis -- return off last year's team that claimed the Carolina/Tar-Roanoke Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
"Our goal is to improve the wrestlers we have, and take the new wrestlers and stress the basics," said Edmundson, who has a career record of 244-98. "Without the full team, it is difficult to predict how we will fair as a team, but I expect us to compete individually." Rosewood recorded six top-5 finishes in regular-season tournament competition. The Eagles ended up second overall in the NCHSAA 1-A/2-A Eastern Regional. Edmundson's squad is a perennial fixture in the dual-team playoffs and has been eliminated each of the past two seasons by the eventual state champion.
Southern Wayne : DUDLEY -- First-year coach Andy Sullivan is relying on a solid crew of starters to turn in another good season for the Saints. "We expect big things from our returning wrestlers," said Sullivan. "This year at 103 we have Dustin Richards and at 140 we have Raymond Valasquez, a tough freshman with a lot of potential." Sullivan anticipates Doogie Niemond and Josh Richards to have good seasons. Also expected to return are Eric Futrell, Vic Darden, Josh Robinson, Tristan Bass, Preston Grantham and Rick Coley. Grantham and Coley saw limited time last season. "We are going to be tough all around, but we still have a few gaps at the end with 189 and 215," said Sullivan. "Apart from those two, we should be just as good as anyone once we have all our wrestlers back from football."
Spring Creek : SEVEN SPRINGS -- Head coach Dwight Glenn might need to store some name tags in his bag for each match. Several new faces dot the Gators' lineup, but a familiar face -- Wes Denham -- returns for his senior season. Denham posted 32 wins last season and qualified for the state championships. Also returning are Darin Straub (119 pounds), Paul Richter (140) and Daquan Wright (160). "We expect to finish a strong second behind Rosewood," said Glenn. "We have just four returning starters and the rest of the team is young and inexperienced."

High expectations
By <http://www.newsargus.com/staff/rcoggins>Rudy
Coggins
Chris Tesar and eighth-year Eastern Wayne wrestling coach Mike
Brown haven't discussed setting goals this season. No need. Tesar
has it all figured out. "My main goal is to go undefeated
until I get to states," said Tesar, a sophomore. "I'm
confident, but I'm not too cocky because I know that have a target
on my back and everyone is looking to beat me." Tesar's freshman
credentials back up his assurance. A former Alaska middle school
state champion, Tesar compiled an impressive resume a year ago.
He claimed the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference and eastern
regional titles, and placed fourth overall in the N.C. High School
Athletic Association Championships. Tesar became just the third
Eastern Wayne grappler -- and first freshman in county history
-- to place in the state finals at 103 pounds. He just missed
his bid for the program's first individual title since 1987 when
Nick Smith claimed the 4-A gold medal at 119 pounds. Former Warrior
standout Philip Ramirez earned the bronze at 119 in 2001. Tesar
also tied the single-season school record for victories by a freshman
(45), set by Vincent Ramirez in 2000-01. "I just wasn't sure
about North Carolina wrestling," said Tesar, who recalled
riding six hours -- one way -- to matches in Alaska. "Once
I got into the season, I got more confident and I wrestled my
hardest each match. States was pretty challenging. "This
year I'll be preparing much sooner after finding out how hard
the competition is going to be." That preparation began in
the offseason. Tesar attended camp at Duke and worked with a daily
training regimen that included running for stamina/endurance,
and weight training to build muscle mass.
"I needed to get stronger and faster," said Tesar. "It's easy to last three and four minutes, but that last period is really hard. Wrestling five matches in a day is really tough." Tesar learned that lesson first-hand at the state meet last year, and then just recently in the preseason Super 32 Challenge. He competed with 108 other grapplers in the 112-pound class and received a big blow in the opening round. Tesar lost to a wrestler ranked lower and knew his task of placing had just gotten harder. He rebounded with victories against Chris Stanley (Eden Morehead), Justin Biddle (Liberty Center) and David Goforth (A.C. Reynolds). Mike Garofalo eliminated Tesar in the next round. "I expected the competition to be extremely high and it was," said Tesar, who finshed 16th overall. "There are so many wrestlers there from different states that you don't much about each person (you wrestle). "The last match ... I could have beaten him, but I was tired. I learned you need to wrestle the whole match and try to keep the lead. As soon as you get the lead, you need to go defensive." Tesar prefers getting an early two- or three-point lead and then making the opponent work. That strategy should prove useful again this season since Tesar will see familiar faces at 112 pounds.
He doesn't expect a big difference. "It's not going to be much of a change and still the same challenge," said Tesar, who doesn't want to settle for fourth place in the state finals this season. "We're just going to be a little heavier. I know how to execute my moves ... be strong, especially with the basics. "I think it will be a little easier than last year because I know my competition and what to do." That's confidence.

Whitford takes helm of Pamlico wrestling Nov. 26,2005 BY <http://www.newbernsunjournal.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Stories.cfm&ByReporter=Jeremy%20Slayton&Section=Sports>Jeremy Slayton Sun Journal
BAYBORO - For the fourth time in the last four years, the Pamlico wrestling team begins a season with a new head coach. Pat Whitford leads the Hurricanes this year, and said his team is very young this year.
"We're going to spend more time on the practice than in competition," Whitford said of his team, which consists of mainly first-year wrestlers. Despite the overall youth of the team, the Hurricanes do have some experience. Whitford said sophomore Logan Morris (145) and seniors Alan Krelie (140), Sam Foreman (160) and Dylan Caroon (135) are the most experienced of the grapplers and is the nucleus of the team.
For those four wrestlers, Whitford said he is working with them on fine-tuning their abilities instead of trying to change what they are doing. He also expects them to qualify for the state tournament in February.
The wrestling team got off to a late start, as Whitford split his time between wrestling and football as the Hurricanes advanced to the second round of the 1-AA state playoffs, before falling to Wallace-Rose Hill last week. Of the newcomers, Whitford said he expects good things out of freshman Vinnie Falcone.
Fourteen wrestlers came out for the team, and Whitford said every weight class will be filled except for 215 and heavyweight. Whitford added that he was in a similar situation while coaching at West Craven and ended the season with 29 wins as a team. "Giving up two forfeits in our conference won't hurt as much as if we were in the 4-A or 3-A," Whitford said. Even though the Hurricanes are inexperienced, expectations are high for the team. "What we want to do is qualify for the state dual team tournament," Whitford said. "To do that, we need to finish at or near the top of the conference." That won't be an easy task with schools like Topsail and Dixon in the Coastal Plains Conference. "They are going to be tough," Whitford said.
The coach added that East Carteret has some strong wrestlers. As individuals, Whitford said his goal for his first-year wrestlers is to medal in the conference tournament and have a chance to qualify for states.

Charles B. Aycock in a familiar position -- first place -- upon
completion of the fourth annual Falcon Invitational late Saturday
evening.
The Golden Falcons placed 11 of 13 competitors in either the championship or consolation finals, and successfully defended their crown for the third consecutive year. Derek Lancaster and Ronald Lynn each claimed a gold medal, while eight teammates seized either silver or bronze medals en route to 202.5 team points. Senior Travis Turner collected career win No. 100 and helped Eastern Wayne, a three-time Invitational participant, record its best showing with 133 points. J.H. RALEIGH, N.C. - Continuing a recent trend, NC State
wrestling coach <http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/jordan_carter00.html>Carter
Jordan signed quality over quantity in the November signing period.
Jordan signed just two prospective student-athletes to national
letters of intent during the early signing period, but both are
nationally heralded recruits: 135-pounder Darrion Caldwell of
Rahway High School in Rahway, N.J., and 119-pounder Ray Ward of
Nazareth High School in Nazareth, Pa. "We feel very fortunate
to sign two kids with the national reputations of Darrion Caldwell
and Ray Ward," Jordan said. "They're quality kids from
great high school wrestling programs." Caldwell, who finished
the 2004-05 season ranked No. 10 nationally by TheMat.com, earned
honorable-mention All-America honors from Asics after winning
the New Jersey state championship at 130 pounds as a junior. Caldwell

News, and is the fifth-ranked 135-pound senior in the nation and
the 34th-ranked high school wrestler in the country regardless
of weight class, according to preseason rankings by TheMat.com.
He is ranked fifth at 135 by intermatwrestle.com. Caldwell is
a two-time state champion heading into his senior season, having
won the New Jersey state title at 119 pounds as a sophomore in
2003-04. He has lost just one match since his sophomore season.
Ward, a high school teammate of current Wolfpack freshman <http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/caramanica_joe00.html>Joe
Caramanica, finished fourth at 112 pounds in the Pennsylvania
Class AAA PIAA Championships as a junior a year ago, and enters
the 2005-06 season ranked as the No. 8 senior in the country at

10/28/2005 3:22:00 PM From Al Bevilacqua/MWA
Our Journey Begins.special thanks to the Dollamur Mat Company
for providing 7 new wrestling mats that have been delivered to
7 new Middle School Programs in New York City under the sponsorship
and leadership of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association "Beat
the Streets initiative. Dollamur Mat Company, based in Dallas,
Texas, in conjunction with the Beat the Streets Program is one
of the many wrestling companies who have joined becoming a "Proud
Sponsor of the Beat the Streets Program providing wrestling mats
at below market rates to help develop wrestling in the large urban
centers of the United States. The mats will provide opportunities
to thousands of kids to use and feel the "magic of a wrestling
in a physical education unit and an after school intramural activity.
Each participating school will receive a two-year grant from the
MWA providing a mat, equipment and coaching stipend. The new coaches
will become certified on Oct. 30 participating in a USA Wrestling
Bronze Level Certification Program at Hunter College in Manhattan.
The program begins Dec. 1, 2005 with 10 teams and Feb. 1, with
10 additional teams participating in an after school intramural
program designed to introduce and teach the 7 Basic Skills of
wrestling. They will meet twice on Saturdays for intramural competition
among their peers. MWA Chairman Al Bevilacqua states " without
the help of Dollamur and other manufacturers stretching our private
sponsorship dollars we will be unable to provide these grants
to the massive number of students in the New York City Public
Schools. Our goal is very simple, we want to place a mat in every
one of the 275 middle schools and have every child experience
the "wrestling magic through as 5 week Physical Education
unit followed by a 10 week after school program. For more information
regarding the Beat the Streets Program go to www.mwausa.org and
if interested in helping kids getting involved in wrestling by
