History of the Super32 (Part 2 of 4)     By Jaime Rutherford
It is hard to imagine the small preseason tournament that took place at Moorehead High School in 1999 would eventually turn into the nations most talked about a preseason event. The growth of the Super32 Challenge has been remarkable. The first tournament used three mats in one high school gym, but come Saturday, October 29 the event will be run on 20 mats at one of the largest venues in North Carolina, the Special Events Center at the Greensboro Coliseum. All that growth has taken place over the last seven years. A growth of this magnitude does not occur by happenstance. It takes countless hours of planning, promotion and coordination over the years. The success of the Super32 Challenge can be summed up in five words, Dave Barker and Sara Koenig. Dave Baker has been the driving force behind the success of the Super32 Challenge. Part of that success is because Dave has become a master promoter. He has had the

ideas and innovation to make the Super32 bigger and better with each passing year. Where as Dave has been the promoter, Sara Koenig has been the so-called nuts and bolts of the operation. Sara is the co-director of the Super32 tournament. She also is the one that oversees the online registrations and up keeps all the information on the Super32 website. If someone looks at the history of this tournament there are certain key turning points that have led to the success of the event. The first turning point in the event was after the very first tournament in 1999. In the very first year, the tournament was not even called the Super32. It was just a preseason tournament at Moorehead High School in Eden, NC with 107 wrestlers entered in it. The following year (2000) was when the tournament officially took the name the Super32 Challenge. Dave Barker was quoted in an article written by Jason Bryant of intermatwrestling.com as saying,

"The year it was 107 kids, it wasn't actually the Super 32,' it was a Morehead preseason tournament."

"When Joe Lareau (founder of ncmat.com and themat.com) left (North Carolina), I took over the Super 32 rankings and put the name on (the tournament) because I thought it would be a good way to get exposure." You may ask yourselves why was this an important turning point? The answer is quite simple. By lending the Super32 name from his rankings on ncmat.com, Dave was able to draw some of the top North Carolina wrestlers to the tournament in 2000. This increased the numbers of participants to 207. The tournament had almost doubled the amount of entries from the 2001 tournament. It also started to draw some more out of state competition. The following year could be called the major turning point for the tournament. One reason for this was the arrival of Great Bridge High School to the Super32 Challenge. Great Bridge has been and still is a perennial national power on the high school wrestling scene. The reason for Great Bridge arrival could be contributed to a couple of things. First of all, Dave added a customized three-inch Super32 Challenge Medal for the winners of each weight class. The word about these medals started to spread and all the top North Carolina Wrestler wanted a chance to be the Super32 champion. This in turn provided Great Bridge with an incentive to come to the tournament because they are all about seeking out tough competition. It also didn't hurt that Dave had emailed some of the Great Bridge wrestlers and coaches inviting them to the tournament. After the arrival of Great Bridge to the tournament in 2001, a change started to take place about how Dave thought about the Super32. The following year, you could see Dave at every off season tournament and all the major in season tournaments in the state. He was networking and making contacts. When the 2002 Super32 Challenge rolled around, Dave started an aggressive promotion of the tournament on a national scale. He started to seek out more national level wrestlers for the tournament. He did this by posting on wrestling forums nationwide. He also added a personal touch, as any good promoter would, by emailing and calling these wrestlers' coaches. Dave also traveled out of state to some of the top preseason tournament, such as Loch Haven, networking and handing out fliers about the upcoming Super32. In 2002, the Super32 added a middle school division. These also helped to bring in more out of state wrestlers. All of Dave's hard work paid off in 2002. The tournament grew to 555 wrestlers with 484 of those in the high school division. The tournament that year became the best preseason tournament in the Southeast. The 2003 Super32 Challenge could be classified as another major turning point for the tournament. That year Dave came up with a great idea and one often used by many promoters. What I mean by this is to offer something that no one else has done before. What could someone offer high school wrestlers in a tournament that they had never received or won before? Dave's idea was to offer a customized championship belt to each winner in the high school division. The idea became an instant success. Patrick Bond one of Great Bridge's star wrestlers commented to Dave after the tournament that the belt was the coolest award he had ever won. The news of the belt traveled fast. A lot of this was due to Sara Koenig creating flashy banners with a great catch phrase promoting the tournament on the internet. The banner and catch phrase are still used today to help promote the tournament. One of the banners included a picture of the actual championship belt with the slogan "Super32 Challenge BATTLE FOR THE BELT." With the addition of the championship belt the number of state champion entries more than doubled. Everyone wanted the belt. This greatly increased the level of competition for the tournament in 2003 and started the tournament to national prominence. As in any tournament you can experience mishaps. One such incident happened in the 2003 tournament. The 2003 tournament moved for the first time from Moorehead High School to East Wake High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. The tournament was spread out between three gyms. Everything was setup to start the tournament when the unthinkable happened. The computer running the tournament software went down and all the brackets were lost. This was a major setback for the start of the tournament. You can tell a lot about people when they are put under pressure. Both Dave and Sara handled this in a cool and calm manner. They made an announcement of what happen then jumped right in getting the brackets back up so the tournament could start. The tournament started several hours late but it ran smooth after it got started. In 2004, the tournament was going to move to the UNC Greensboro campus. This was going to give a bigger venue to hold the tournament, but some problems arose in the contract with the university and Dave was forced to move the tournament back to the Moorehead High School. The site of the first first four tournaments. This also forced the tournament to be split into two days. The middle school would have their tournament Friday night while the high school tournamet would be held on Saturday. The 2004 Super32 saw an increase in wrestlers and the talent of these wrestlers also increased. This brings us to this year's Super32 Challenge. Dave and Sara realized that a high school could not support the number of wrestlers that wanted to compete in the Super32. So, they sought out a bigger place to hold the tournament. Their searches finally lead to the procurement of the Special Events at the Greensboro Coliseum.  This also allowed them to increase the size of the tournament by to 1250 wrestlers for this year. Club wrestling underway at BGSU  <http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v?TARGET=profile&id=rautullo>By Ryan Autullo  ASST. SPORTS EDITOR Oct. 03,

Dan Mundrick breathed extremely heavily and pleaded for a drink of water. He even contemplated vomiting. And he couldn,t have been happier. Mundrick, a junior at BGSU, was one of 12 students at the club wrestling team,s first optional practice on Tuesday at Bowling Green High School. After months of tedious paper work, Mundrick, the team,s president, finally witnessed his plan of forming the school,s first club wrestling team coming to fruition. The team had its first official practice last night and will continue to do so four nights a week throughout the season. "The big thing is going to be when that first tournament comes around and everybody gets to wrestle in it, Mundrick said. "That,s probably going to be the best feeling. Mundrick, a two-time state qualifier at Anthony Wayne High School, passed up several opportunities to wrestle at NCAA programs so he could be closer to his family in the Toledo area. But instead of retiring from the sport he took up at age 4, Mundrick inquired about forming a club team at BG, which cut its varsity program in the early 1980,s to satisfy Title IX regulations. Mundrick,s proposal was initially turned down because of inadequate space for wrestling mats on campus. Not to be discouraged, he met with Ken White, the father of high school teammate, Jamie White, and formulated a plan. They made arrangements for the team to hold practices at Bowling Green High School and BG,s head coach Andrew Webb and assistant Matt Jacobs agreed to coach the club team in addition to their normal duties. Webb and Jacobs will be joined on staff by White, alumni advisor Jim Kettinger and Mundrick,s father, Terry. "At that time I thought it was a pipe dream, Webb said of his first conversation with the club leaders earlier this year. "I thought they were just kind of talking out of their rear ends. It,s still uncertain how many wrestlers will be members of the team, as Mundrick is still actively recruiting around campus. The talent level of the team, though, is much more clear. As many as four Falcons competed at the high school state tournament and the remaining team members qualified for the district meet. The team will compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association and will be in a conference with teams like Toledo and Cincinnati. "I,d say there,s a lot of talent in here, said Justin Slauterbeck, a 2004 state placer at Oak Harbor. "I,m pretty sure almost every single one of these people who came out for this club could definitely make it to a couple smaller schools, if not big schools. I know for myself, I took a year off. Getting back into that physical and mental shape is going to be a big task. Webb, a four-year varsity wrestler at the University of Findlay, welcomes the thought of coaching at the high school and collegiate level despite having a 3-year-old and 1-year-old at home. His wife is the girl,s soccer coach at Perrysburg and understands and backs her husband,s passion for coaching. "I,ll be really busy, he said. "I won,t have a lot of time at home. The Falcons will kick off their season Nov. 5 at the Eastern Michigan Open. Other highlighted dates on the tentative schedule include a pair of matches with Toledo " away Dec. 3 and home Jan. 21. Webb said the freshmen on the team will have a significant advantage over their teammates who have been away from the sport for several years. Jamie White didn,t exactly agree with his coach,s thoughts, though, noting that he will have to work hard to get into optimal physical condition. "It feels good to get out of the classroom and actually moving around and getting back into shape, said White, a two-time district qualifier. "It,s still like varsity. We just don,t get that much recognition and support, money-wise. We hope to keep the involvement up so we can get money from the university. To receive funding from the University, the club must be in existence for two semesters and field a full team. Mundrick said the wrestlers have club dues of $250 each in addition to buying their own uniforms. But monetary figures are merely an afterthought to Mundrick, who is just happy to be part of a wrestling team once again. "It feels good to finally get back on the mat and see how out of shape I am, he said. "We,re ready to get the ball rolling and we,re waiting for that first tournament to show everybody what,s up. <http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v/ART/43429585a7edc>http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v/ART/43429585a7edc

A resurrection for Mesa State wrestling
By By PATTI ARNOLD The Daily Sentinel <mailto:parnold@gjds.com>parnold@gjds.com.
Thursday, October 13, 2005

When wrestling was dropped at Mesa State College after the 1991 season, it created a rift between the wrestling community on the Western Slope and the college that never quite healed. Let the healing begin. The Mavericks will send a wrestling team back onto the mat for the 2006-07 season, the first men,s sport added at the college in years. "It just makes sense for us to have a wrestling program, Mesa State Athletic Director Nick Adams said Wednesday. The topic has been on the front burner for several months, with a group of people from the college and the wrestling community discussing the feasibility. After a campus interest survey last spring, women,s track was added for this indoor and outdoor season, women,s swimming has its first official practice next week, and now it,s time for wrestling. There are several men on campus who want to wrestle, Adams said, and they,re being encouraged to start getting into wrestling shape. "I had two young men stop by my office today, he said. By adding women,s track and swimming, Adams said the school has taken steps to meet Title IX requirements to afford equal opportunity for women, and can justify adding a men,s sport. The Mavericks will be the 40th wrestling program competing in NCAA Division II, and will bring the number of teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to nine. New Mexico Highlands is adding wrestling this season. That gives the Mavs four home conference dual meets next season, and there are several early-season tournaments they can enter. San Francisco State University is an affiliate member of the RMAC, as Fort Hays State will be when it leaves the RMAC after this school year for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which does not sponsor wrestling. Mesa State will immediately start a national search to hire a full-time coach, and Adams hopes to have someone hired by January to start recruiting. He has sent letters to high school wrestling coaches across the Western Slope and has invited them and their families to attend the Mavs, football game and tailgate party Oct. 22, where wrestling will be the topic of the day. "We,ll draw kids from all over. High school wrestling programs stayed and college programs started disappearing, Adams said. "It,ll be a well-staffed team. We,ve got a lot of kids interested. Funding the program will be a challenge. The college has $100,000 allocated by the student government to start new athletic programs. Adams estimated that startup costs for wrestling, which include buying new mats, scales, uniforms, headgear, etc., will run about $50,000. That doesn,t include an operating budget, the biggest portion of which will go to scholarships and travel, like every other sport at Mesa State. The community group that met with college officials not only offered its support to revive the program, but also its help to keep it around. "They,ve offered everything from financial support to grunt work to whatever we needed done, Adams said. "They,ve stepped forward financially, with their time, and they,re committed to seeing this program not only through the startup, but to staying here. That,s exciting. There,s still a lot to be done, though, with finances at the top of the list. To help that cause, the Mavericks have pulled off an impressive feat " former NCAA and Olympic champion and 15-time national championship coach Dan Gable is coming to campus Nov. 12 for a dinner to benefit the program. Gable, who coached the University of Iowa to 15 national championships, will speak about his career at the dinner at Liff Auditorium. The National Wrestling Coaches Association is covering Gable,s travel costs, so all the proceeds from the tickets, $75 each, go to the program. Liff Auditorium seats approximately 300 people. Tickets are available by calling the athletic department at 248-1503. Gable will conduct a wrestling clinic at 11 a.m. on Nov. 13 at Brownson Arena. The entry fee is $20 and registration forms are available at Saunders Fieldhouse, B&H Sports, Big O Tires or through Western Slope AAU wrestling representatives. "When you think about wrestling, it,s impossible to think of college or Olympic wrestling and not think about Dan Gable, Adams said. "To have him come in and speak, I,m almost speechless. He,s a legend. "To have him say (he,s) excited that Mesa State College is starting wrestling and (he wants) to be a part of it and help is really cool. <http://www.gjsentinel.com/sports/content/sports/stories/2005/10/13/10_13_pa_mesa_wrestling_WWW.html>http://www.gjsentinel.com/sports/content/sports/stories/2005/10/13/10_13_pa_mesa_wrestling_WWW.html

USA Wrestling set membership records in four major categories in 2004-05 year 10/12/2005 By Gary Abbott/USA Wrestling
USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, is proud to report that the organization,s membership set records in four major categories during the 2004-05 year. The 2004-05 membership year, which ended on August 31, 2005, set annual records for athletes, coaches, clubs and sanctioned events. During the 2004-2005 year, USA Wrestling registered 142,624 athlete members, topping the record of 135,519 athletes set during the 2003-04 year. The number of registered coaches climbed to 19,813 from the previous record set one year ago at 19,362 coach members. USA Wrestling chartered clubs reached a new record level, with 3,117 club programs, up from record of 2,927 clubs set during the 2002-03 season. Sanctioned events were also at a new level, with 1,741 USA Wrestling events during the 2004-05 season, breaking the previous year,s record of 1,682 events. The membership records were possible through the efforts of USA Wrestling,s volunteer leaders on the regional, state and local levels, who provided the most comprehensive program of wrestling activities in the nation. "USA Wrestling has again set all-time records for athletes, coaches, clubs and sanction events during its 2005 membership year. This outstanding accomplishment is directly related to the hard work of so many great USA Wrestling volunteers, said Mark Scott, Director of State Services. "USA Wrestling State Leaders were superlative in attracting new members to the organization as is evidenced by our new membership records. USA Wrestling's State Leaders are a unique group of people who are so dedicated to the ideals that wrestling brings to individuals that they make it a priority to grow the base, said Scott. For the membership year ending August 31, 2005, USA Wrestling is proud to announce that 33 states increased their athlete membership. Those state organizations and their leaders should be commended for their hard work and effort. The states with athlete growth this year were: Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming. A total of 28 states experienced growth in the coach membership category: Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wyoming. NDSU wrestling coach accuses Mankato of "poaching"

FARGO, N.D. (AP) " North Dakota State head wrestling coach Bucky Maughan is accusing Minnesota State, Mankato of "poaching" athletes from his team, a charge the Minnesota school rejects. Four Bison starters have transferred to Mankato in the last two years, and Maughan said another NDSU wrestler intends to transfer next semester. "I'm very upset with Mankato," Maughan said. "They're poaching on us. I've had open talks with their coach. This is ridiculous." Mankato head coach Jim Makovsky denied he is violating NCAA rules by actively recruiting athletes from another school. He said the decision of the NDSU wrestlers revolves around NDSU's move to NCAA Division I, and that all five Bison wrestlers contacted him first. "I would aggressively deny they were aggressively recruited," Makovsky said. IOC Executive Board rejects wrestling,s request for seven women,s weight classes in the Olympic Games 10/27/2005 By Gary Abbott/USA Wrestling
The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced its decisions on a number of requests for changes in the program of the Summer Olympic Games during meetings in Lausanne, Swit., Oct. 27. Among the requests denied was a proposal by FILA, the international wrestling federation, to increase the number of women,s weight classes in the Olympic Games from four to seven. In a press release, the IOC made the following announcement: "Requests by International Federations NOT accepted by the EB for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing
FILA Wrestling : Request: inclusion of three additional weight categories of women,s wrestling, leading to a total of seven categories. The Federation was encouraged to find a solution within its existing quota. Wrestling currently has seven weight classes in the Olympics in men,s freestyle and men,s Greco-Roman wrestling and four weight classes in women,s freestyle wrestling, for a total of 21 weight classes. In the World Championships, there are seven weight classes for women wrestlers. The four weight classes that were contested in the 2004 Olympic Games were 48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg and 72 kg. The three weight classes that are in the World Championships but not the Olympic Games are 51 kg, 59 kg and 67 kg. Men,s wrestling changed from 10 weight classes per style (20 total medal events) in the 1996 Olympic Games to eight weight classes per style (16 total medal events) in the 2000 Olympics to seven weight classes per style (14 medals for men, but a total of 21 medals including women) at the 2004 Olympic Games. Wrestling,s request for an increase in participants and medals was one of nine requests for increases that were denied. Other sports that had requests denied for changes were boxing, basketball, gymnastics, aquatics, softball, tennis, weightlifting and taekwondo. Including in this decision was the denial of the request for the addition of women,s boxing to the Olympic Games. The IOC did accept a number of proposals from other sports, which included three new medal events and an expansion of the number of women athletes in a three sports. In addition, the IOC will increase the number of female athletes in the Olympic Games by approximately 80 athletes, without adding additional athletes to the total of 10,500 competitors in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Editor,s Notes& Announcements:  The Super 32 Pre-Season Tournament this past weekend was the biggest ever. We are glad to be able to help out and hope to assist next year in making the event even better. The Greensboro Coliseum Complex had 20 mats for over 1,200 registered wrestlers. We had some growing pains but overall the tournament progressed well. It was one of the biggest wrestling events we have seen. That event and other news have stretched our weekly issue to 10 pages.

This week the TDR will announce our Pre-Season Carolinas College Rankings as the first rankings will be announced twice a month. We are looking to expand our rankings exposure in more newspapers for both the college rankings and the TDR Top 12 in eastern North Carolina.

The next chance to prepare for the season in an open multi-state competition will be the NHSCA Pre-Season Nationals in Winston-Salem. Check out the details listed below. We hope to see many students taking advantage of these opportunities as the practice whistles this week as high schools in North Carolina start their regular season practices.

Send news, results, & articles on-line to us. Until later, Martin Fleming, Editor

"Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory."

------------------------------------- High School Wrestling -----------------------------------

Season just around the Corner and the Super32 (Part 1 of 3)     By Jaime Rutherford
As the leaves start to fall and the temperatures start to drop many thoughts go through one's head. For a lot of people those thoughts are a signal that the wrestling season is just around the corner. Starting Monday, wrestlers will be rolling on the mats because Monday, October 31st is the official opening date for high school wrestling in North Carolina. For many wrestlers it is a chance to see if all their hard work over the summer and off-season has paid off. It has been an annual duty for these wrestlers to go to camps and clinics during the summer and to hit the spring and fall tournaments to try and give themselves an advantage for the upcoming season over their fellow competitors. Year after year a person can see the progress of these wrestlers. They are usually the ones standing on the podium at the end of February. On October 29th, two days before the official start date of the season we will have a good indication of who will be some of the top wrestlers in North Carolina, and for that matter, who will be some of the best wrestlers in the country. October 29th is the date for North Carolina's own Super32 Challenge wrestling tournament. This tournament is sponsored by NcMat.com and ran by tournament directors Dave Barker and Sara Koenig. >From it's humble beginnings in a gym in Eden Moorehead High School it has grown to become the nation's top pre-season wrestling tournament. The tournament this year features wrestlers from several of the nation's best high school wrestling programs. These wrestlers are from such powerhouses as Great Bridge High School in Virginia, Davison High School in Michigan, Brandon High School in Florida, Bishop Lynch High School in Texas and Christianburg High School in Virginia. These are just a few of those who have entered the event. This year the tournament will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. One thousand and sixty-two wrestlers in the high school division will lay all on the line for the chance at the coveted Super32 Belt. This belt is a special customized award for the winner of each weight class. Hence, the motto for the tournament is "Super32 BATTLE FOR THE BELT".
The tournament will feature wrestlers from twenty-three states. Of these wrestlers eighty-three are previous state champions, forty-six previous runners-up, and one hundred twenty-eight third through eighth place finishers. In addition to this, the tournament has two hundred previous state qualifiers entered in it. This gives a good example of the type of talent and competition that will be present at the event, and why this event is the premier pre-season wrestling tournament in the nation. Several of the top senior wrestlers entered in this event have already committed to wrestle in college next year. Come Saturday a person will be able to see college coaches or their representatives setting in the stands looking for their next recruit. This tournament gives these coaches a great opportunity to see wrestlers that they may not have seen before in action. It also gives a chance for upcoming wrestlers that have not made a name for themselves a chance to put their name on a coaches radar screen for the future.

Eddie Sawyer Awarded the Roy Heverly Trophy at Currituck game

Two Time State Champion Eddie Sawyer of Currituck County High School will be presented the award for the top underclassman scholastic wrestler in eastern North Carolina, at halftime of this Friday,s home football game with Northeastern High School. Eddie was a three-time state finalist last year as a junior and has compiled 87 wins so far in high school. He was also the top wrestler at his weight in eastern North Carolina last year at 145 lbs. He will be awarded a TDR Top Wrestler Placque individualized with his name at the top along with Jonathan Sutton of Northeastern at 125lbs. The TakeDown Report Editor Martin Fleming will present the awards to Eddie & Jonathan.

The award is named in honor of former state champion Roy Heverly of West Carteret. Heverly was a 4 time state medallist at West Carteret before earning All-American medals at The University of North Carolina-Pembroke. The TakeDown Report, an on-line publication that promotes amateur wrestling in eastern North Carolina, sponsors the Award. "The award has been named to recognize the most successful underclassman wrestler in the eastern North Carolina Fleming noted, "This encourages the young men from the teams in the area with another opportunity for recognition and for them to realize the hard work, determination and discipline it takes to be a top notch wrestler, he added. A picture of the type of trophy to be awarded Eddie can be seen at <http://www.pittsburghtrophy.com/wrestlingpage/guillotine.htm>http://www.pittsburghtrophy.com/wrestlingpage/guillotine.htm

NHSCA Pre-Season Nationals

The National High School Coaches Association is hosting the National Open Pre-Season Wrestling Championships at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, NC this November 12th-13th. This promises to be the finest pre-season wrestling tournament in the nation. The experience will be unparalleled. The NHSCA is offering all 4 divisions for this event: elementary, middle school, high school and college/open. The 2004 National Open Pre-Season Championships featured top competition from over 25 different states. The High School Division alone had wrestlers who had made over 60 state finals appearances between them in the 14 weight classes. The Middle School and Elementary Divisions were full of future stars and the College / Open Division grows every year. The top 6 place-winners will receive beautiful awards and will qualify for the prestigious 2006 National Open Wrestling Championships. Model League Websites:
PAC-10 Football (<http://www.PAC10football.net>www.PAC10football.net) & PAC-10 Wrestling (<http://www.PAC10wrestling.com>www.PAC10wrestling.com)
The PAC-10 (in District 1, Pennsylvania) is serving as the model league websites for both football and wrestling. All leagues will be given standard NHSCA Sports Network sites. However, if the teams in the league would like to purchase the optional features including limited custom designing, the PAC-10 site is just an example of what is possible. An example of an NHSCA Sports Network standard league can be found at:
<http://www.nhscasportsnetwork.com/wrestling/highschool/pa/leagues/berks/standings.htm>http://www.nhscasportsnetwork.com/wrestling/highschool/pa/leagues/berks/standings.htm
One of the items of concern for many coaches and athletic directors is forums/message boards. Forums (when that feature is available in the future) will only be available for those teams/leagues who specifically request and purchase them. When they are purchased, they will be strictly monitored for offensive material which will be promptly deleted and offenders will be banned from posting. Abuse of these forums in any form will not be tolerated as the purpose of the NHSCA Sports Network is to promote these sports and give positive recognition of the athletes and coaches who put forth a lot of time and effort into their sport.

Spartans receive votes in team Top 25
CONTACT MIKE HIRSCHMAN (Cell 336-202-5331) DATE: October 27, 2005
MANHEIM, PA - UNC Greensboro received votes as a team and had three wrestlers ranked in the individual Top 20 rankings of their respective weight classes when the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and InterMat released their pre-season rankings on Thursday. UNCG received 29 points to rank 31st in the pre-season team poll. Oklahoma State was a unanimous No. 1 selection among the 12 coaches from the various conferences around the country, assuming the position that it finished last season in. Oklahoma was second, followed by Michigan, Illinois and Iowa rounding out the Top 5. Fellow SoCon member Chattanooga was 22nd in the pre-season poll. Joe Kemmerer at 125 lbs. and Darren Burns at 197 lbs. each ranked eighth in their respective weight classes. Tyler Shovlin ranked 14th in the 285 lbs. class. Burns, a junior from Catawba, NC, was an NCAA qualifier last season and earned All-SoCon honors. He reached the quarterfinal round at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis last season, finishing the year with a 30-6 record. Kemmerer, a sophomore from Mountain Top, PA, led the team with a school-record 31 wins last season. After winning the Southern Conference championship at 125, he qualified for the NCAA Tournament and reached the fourth round of the consolation bracket. He went 37-26 during his career with the Big Red, including a 21-14 mark last season wrestling at 285 lbs. A Goodman For The Jobs

The Wolfpack received a boost on both the football field and the wrestling mat when Ryan Goodman transferred to NC State from Nebraska Oct. 26, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C. - Like most college kids, <http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/goodman_ryan00.html>Ryan Goodman has dreams. While the two-sport standout from New Jersey set multiple high school records in wrestling, his dreams were huddled elsewhere. That's because Goodman, who started at quarterback for his high school, aspires to play under center in the NFL. Goodman thought he had the dream within his grasp when he signed with Nebraska out of high school. The Cornhuskers agreed to let Ryan continue his wrestling career while also giving him the opportunity to play football. Goodman quickly made his presence known in both sports. As a redshirt freshman at Nebraska, Goodman posted a 6-0 record in unattached matches in wrestling, while working himself up to the No. 2 quarterback on the gridiron. Just when everything seemed to be falling into place for Goodman, the Nebraska coaches told him that he would be moving to safety. Goodman, was hurt by the decision, and said the decision to transfer first formulated when he heard the word safety. "I just couldn't accept it in my mind how a No. 2 quarterback could be moved to safety," Goodman said. Wanting to continue playing quarterback as well as continue wrestling, Goodman decided to reopen his recruitment. After taking a second look at schools like Iowa, Virginia, and Maryland, Goodman was told to take a look at NC State by an assistant wrestling coach from his high school. When NC State wrestling coach <http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/jordan_carter00.html>Carter Jordan first got wind of Goodman's interest in his wrestling program, he knew he had an advantage on most other schools vying for Goodman's talents -- Chuck Amato. The Wolfpack's head football coach had wrestled two undefeated seasons for the Pack in 1966 and 1968, and frequently attended the Pack's home meets. Knowing Goodman's desire to play both sports, Jordan said the Amato factor helped out "big time" in landing Goodman's services. "The fact that Chuck wrestled was what got us in the ball game [with Ryan]," Jordan said. "Chuck is a big fan of the sport and there's a good synergy there -- we love him; he's great for our sport." After two recruiting trips to Raleigh, Goodman signed with NC State. Although Goodman is on scholarship for wrestling this year, Jordan said he realized Ryan's dream was to play football. "The biggest thing we tried to impart to Ryan was that we were going to honor his desire to play football, whether that would be detrimental to us or not," Jordan said. "I think, sometimes, it sounds corny, but we all have dreams. Ryan's dream is to be an NFL quarterback, and I don't think there are many people that have their chance to have their cake and eat it too." Goodman, who must sit out the 2005 football season because of NCAA transfer rules, is on a wrestling scholarship for the 2005-06 school year, and has been working out part-time with the wrestling team since practice began in mid-October. Jordan hopes to have Goodman, who will be on football scholarship once he becomes eligible to play a year from now, full-time with the wrestling team when football season concludes. Goodman figures to be the Wolfpack's starter at 197, which became vacant when <http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/garren_zach00.html>Zach Garren transferred to Rowan University, ironically, to play football. Jordan said that although Goodman would have to make the transition from football shape to wrestling shape, that Amato's wrestling background causes him to train and condition players with wrestling techniques. Goodman agreed that being a wrestler has helped him on the football field. "I think wrestling helps with any sport," Goodman said. "You've got to be smart, you've got to strategize, and you've got to stay on your toes." Though Goodman may joke with Jordan about his commitment to wrestling, his determination on the mat is no laughing matter. Goodman was a two-time New Jersey state champion at 189 pounds and compiled a 72-match win streak - good enough to earn him All-America honors. When asked what his goals were as a Wolfpack wrestler, Goodman immediately responded "a national championship" without blinking an eye. "That's not shooting high, that's shooting where everyone should be shooting," Goodman said. "I'm not just shooting for a win, because I want to win everything." Goodman, who rooms with fellow Wolfpack grapplers <http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/colbert_jeremy00.html>Jeremy Colbert and <http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/dozier_jalil00.html>Jalil Dozier, also has high aspirations for his new team. He said the team has their sites set on an ACC championship. "We're a young team, and the younger you are, the more imaginative you are," Goodman said. "We have a great group of kids, and their dreams are just as big as mine." Jordan is thrilled to have Goodman suiting up for the Pack this year -- not just because of his talent, but because of the attitude he's instilling in the wrestlers around him. "[Goodman] has already changed, and will continue to change the mentality of everyone around him," Jordan said. "Enthusiasm will saturate everywhere around you." Jordan said that in order to be the best, you have to first believe it to be possible. In Goodman, he has a wrestler who's making others believe in themselves. "We've got very talented kids," Jordan said. "They've just got to give themselves permission to competitive with the other guys. It's one thing for the coaches to try and do that, but when your peers adopt that mentality, and buy into to what the coaches are saying, and then work as hard as you possibly can, then you really do have a chance to compete with anybody."

Pniewski Garners Preseason No. 18 Ranking  By Seth Mikel, Assistant SID Oct. 17th,

NEWTON, Iowa Wrestling International News Magazine recently announced its NCAA Division I preseason individual and team rankings, naming Gardner-Webb,s Josh Pniewski as the No. 18 wrestler in the nation at 133 pounds. Pniewski missed the first half of Gardner-Webb,s 2004-2005 campaign while recovering from injury but bounced back to post a 16-9 record and become the school,s first-ever, two-time National Qualifier on the Division I level. Despite the shortened season, the Spencer, Ohio, native still managed to lead the Bulldogs with five major decision victories, while ending second with 46 takedowns and third with 41 points and 16 wins. Pniewski also finished among Gardner-Webb,s top five with nine reversals and 11 victories via near fall. Pniewski closed the year by winning 13 of his final 18 matches, including 10 straight en route to claiming his second NCAA East Regional Championship in as many years and cementing his place as one of the top grapplers in the region. While competing at the NCAA National Championships in St. Louis, Mo., Pniewski suffered a first-round loss before upsetting T.J. Enright of Ohio State. Pniewski earned a come from behind, 7-6, victory over then No. 18 ranked Enright after scoring a takedown with 15 seconds left in the match. The national ranking for Pniewski is the second such honor for the Gardner-Webb program this preseason, as Daniel Elliott was also touted as the No. 18 ranked wrestler in the nation in the 149-pound division by Amateur News Wrestling. Gardner-Webb will open up the 2005-2006 campaign with a quad match at UNC Greensboro on Nov. 12.

Wolfpack Wrestling Clinic To Feature Cael Sanderson

Former Olympian, Four-Time NCAA Champion Ranks Among Legends Of The Sport

RALEIGH, N.C. - This year's NC State Fall Wrestling Clinic and Red-White scrimmage will feature a little added sizzle with four-time national champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Cael Sanderson slated to serve as one of the clinic's instructors. The clinic will be held on Sunday, November 13, at Reynolds Coliseum. Registration will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the clinic running from 1-4 p.m. The day's events will wrap up with the annual Red-White scrimmage from 4 o'clock until 5:30. The wrestling clinic will be geared towards club, middle school and high school wrestlers of all abilities and experience. Coaches are invited to attend free of charge. The clinic should give wrestlers and coaches an opportunity to receive instruction on technique, while meeting and interacting with the NC State wrestlers and Sanderson, one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the sport. His popularity has grown world-wide since winning a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. As a collegiate competitor, he became the first wrestler in history to win four NCAA titles while also completing an undefeated career (159-0) from 1998-99 through 2001-02 at Iowa State University. In 2001 and 2002, he also earned spots on the U.S. Men's Freestyle World teams. However, in 2001 he was unable to compete when the September 11 attacks on New York City postponed the event to a date that conflicted with his college schedule. USA Wrestling decided not to attend the 2002 World Championships in Tehran, Iran, due to a credible threat placed against the team. Sanderson was vindicated in 2003, when he won a silver medal at the World Championships held in New York City's Madison Square Garden before achieving wrestling greatness with his gold medal in 2004. Currently, Cael resides in Ames, Iowa with his wife Kelly where he is an assistant wrestling coach at Iowa State University.

Originally from Heber City, Utah, Sanderson was coached by his father Steve with great support from his mother Debbie. His two older brothers, Cody and Cole, both excelled as wrestlers at Iowa State as well. Cael's younger brother Cyler is a freshman at Iowa State and will wrestle for the Cyclones beginning with the 2005-06 school year. <http://gopack.collegesports.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/100305aab.html>http://gopack.collegesports.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/100305aab.html

Things seemed to be getting better for Delaware State,s wrestling program. Traditionally a doormat amongst teams in the East, Darren Archangelo seemed to have the Hornets moving towards gaining confidence and winning. Archangelo, a NCAA Division III runner-up at York College in 1993, resigned as head coach on October 18, citing personal and family reasons.

The Takedown Report # 13-14   Week of October 17th, 2005 8 pages

Editor,s Notes& Announcements:  The Super 32 Pre-Season Tournament next weekend is full with over 1,250 registered wrestlers. Could be the largest pre-season event anywhere with wrestlers from 23 states. Other signs of growth in our sport is the gradual growth of new and restarted college programs. New varsity teams have been announced at Mesa State in Colorado & Sioux Falls University in South Dakota. Competitive club teams are starting this fall at University of South Carolina and Bowling Green State University in Ohio. This in addition to earlier announced teams at Belmont-Abbey, Newberry, Liberty Univ. and others. On a lighter note we are accepting nominations for the sport with most over saturation of coverage in relation to interest. Such as how in the world is poker a sport, with TV coverage?

Send news, results, & articles on-line to us. Until later, Martin Fleming, Editor

Marine loses life in bomb explosion                 By JAY PRICE, Staff Writer
A former captain of Cary High School's powerhouse wrestling team was killed in Iraq on Saturday while on patrol with his Marine unit. Sgt. Mark P. Adams, 24, who grew up in Morrisville, died near Ramadi, west of Baghdad, after a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee. Adams, whom the Pentagon identified Monday, was the sixth Triangle serviceman to be killed in Iraq since the war began in 2003.
