COACHING THOUGHTS
Athletes and coaches, please know that the training youÌÐre taking part in
is very systematic. We are training the student-wrestler to have the
greatest opportunity for success. We are taping each session so we know
exactly what was covered and how well the students performed in rehearsal.
One of our primary goals is that the student never beats him or herself.
We also stress understanding every position, forwards and backwards. We
want the student to know not only what they can do, but what their
opponent can do from each position. This art of wrestling must be built on
a foundation of mental and emotional ruggedness. The will of the athlete
must be stronger than the will of their opponent. So as you train the
body, you also train the heart. Literally, the athlete never loses, but
they may run out of time. With this attitude and a willingness to
constantly strive to improve, the impossible becomes possible. A wrestler
who buys into this concept will be an inspiration to those around him. So
those individuals will take their team to a new level. We really
appreciate the support of the coaches and families who understand this
approach and put their support behind it. When a student buys into this
approach, the results take care of themselves.

===========================================
SUPPORT SYSTEM OF STUDENT-ATHLETE
Every student, coach, parent or anyone else who wants to help the sport of
wrestling needs to bookmark the National Wrestling Coaches Association
website ̱ www.nwcaonline.com. Once on that website, go to the Optimal
Performance Calculator (OPC). 35 of 49 states that have wrestling are now
using this system to determine desired weights for each student and how to
get to those weights. This effort will, in the next decade, move wrestling
into 1st place as the number one fitness sport in the United States of
America. I want to encourage every family member to buy into this. We all
need to eat right, live right and stay fit. Learn as much as you can about
body composition, proper nutrition, consistent exercise, and rest and
recovery. When a student is on this program, they will not be allowed to
lose more than 1.5 % of their body weight in any 7-day period. This is
based on the scientific fact that no daily diet should have more than a
1,000-calorie deficit. Over a 7-day period, this would equal 7,000
calories. To lose one pound, a person must have a 3,500-calorie deficit.
This program also stresses all of us staying fully hydrated. We all need
to drink more water. Please concentrate on the positive goals of this
effort. I have chosen to stress that if we all buy into this not only the
athlete will be more fit, but so will the coaches and the individuals who
make up the support system for every wrestler. I never want to hear that
the wrestler was eating one way and everyone else was eating another way.

DONÌÐT FORGET TO VOTE
Dan Gable is still in second place for ESPNÌÐs Best Coach of all time. As
of this writing, John Wooden was holding on to first place with 40% of the
votes, while Dan Gable had 28% and Pat Summit had 23.2%. Dan needs your
vote to move into first place. Wrestling needs this type of recognition.
The winner will be announced Monday, September 25 at 10 p.m. on ESPN
Classic.

2006-2007 MAT-TOWN USA MEMBERSHIP & FUNDRAISING
Mat-Town USA needs every family and every booster club to support the
efforts to train wrestlers. The market value of group training is at least
$10 per session. In the near future, we will be sending out reminders and
also contacting coaches and booster clubs. We are in our 4th year of
operation and our #1 limiting factor right now is financial. We need every
one receiving this to ask how they might help.

===========================================
2007 GRADUATES
ItÌÐs never too early to begin planning for college. Be sure youÌÐve taken
your SATs and registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. I would recommend
you meet with your guidance contact and begin to get everything in order
for college now. Mat-Town USA and Turner Wrestling Training will gladly
offer our encouragement and advice if a student has any questions or
concerns. We strongly recommend that the student be very pro-active. Do
not wait to be recruited. Seek out the school that you would like to
attend. The single most important factor in your decision should be the
people you are going to be coached by and wrestle with.

===========================================
GUIDE TO NCAA RULES FOR ALUMNI, FACULTY & FRIENDS
Penn State University publishes a brochure for individuals that are
associated with prospective student-athletes and enrolled
student-athletes. I would encourage everyone to write to them and ask for

100 returning wrestlers, Tom's Top 50 tournament teams, rules, committees,
hall of famers, and much more! To reserve your copy, please send a check
or money order for $18.99 ($17 + $1.99 S&H) to Tom EllingÌÐs PA Wrestling

Until the next time, I hope each one of you does one of or all of the
following: train hard to improve; enjoy the challenge of competition;
coach wrestlers to be better citizens as well as competitors; encourage
everyone to either follow, participate in, or support the great sport of
wrestling. I do not want anyone on the sidelines. I want everyone who
receives this email to be involved in some way in introducing students to
wrestling and helping others to understand what it is to talk about the
education of wrestling. Meanwhile, please support our sponsors.

COACHING THOUGHTS
WE, not they. IÌÐm sure youÌÐve all heard the statement, ÌÂWe won!̨ or ÌÂThey
lost!̨ ItÌÐs amazing how WE always wins and THEY always loses. This is an
example of failure to accept responsibility. Each of us needs to have a
sense of responsibility in our area of wrestling. Now when it comes to
teams, I feel a sense of responsibility for each individual that trains
with me, either through Mat-Town USA or Turner Wrestling Training. I feel
a sense of responsibility for helping each individual to improve so they
in turn can help their team to do better. So when it comes to individual
teams, I am somewhat neutral because I may have coached athletes on both
teams. So IÌÐm just looking for improved performances. However, I would
expect the athletes, the coaches and the support system of any individual
team to accept responsibility for the teamÌÐs performance. Now when we go
to the state level, I, too, have to be somewhat careful because I work
with athletes from many states through Turner Wrestling Training. I would
encourage each of you to accept a share of the responsibility for how your
state does when there is state vs. state competition. What brought me to
write these comments was the Pennsylvania performance in the USA Wrestling
championships held in Fargo, ND in July. This competition is for Cadets
and Juniors in freestyle and Greco-Roman and Girls in freestyle. You can
go to the PAWF web page ̱ www.usapawf.com -- and see the results for
yourself. The high point team-wise was the Pennsylvania Cadet freestyle
team finished first. Quite an honor, one the competitors and everyone
should be very proud of. As I started out, WE did very well. But you will
notice in the junior division and the girls division, we did not do too
well. I, for one, as a Pennsylvania resident and as a person very involved
with many Pennsylvania wrestlers, accept some responsibility for that. I
want to ask myself what can I do to help change that? But I also want all
of you who are reading this to ask yourself what can you do? We are all
quick to point to the Division I NCAA wrestling championships when
Pennsylvania has the most All-Americans. Please examine how you can be
more proactive to make sure we do better next year. But next year always
starts the day after this year. Now to try to keep all of you focused on
WE and THEY, letÌÐs turn to USA Wrestling at the senior level, where men
wrestling in freestyle and Greco and women wrestle in freestyle. I, for
one, am very patriotic and I want to see us do better. I want to see the
United States as the most powerful nation in the world in wrestling. This
would help every person whoÌÐs in the sport of wrestling. WE need to do
anything we can in our position and our sphere of influence to help us
move in that direction. To me, wrestling is the ultimate team sport. The
contribution of every individual is very measurable. The importance of
good training partners can never be overstated. The need for adequate
funding is absolutely critical. The impossible becomes possible if no one
cares who gets the credit. I will leave you with that thought.

positive way. When you think only of yourself, you have the wrong focus.

There are two coachesÌÐ conventions this fall ̱ the National Wrestling
Coaches Association Convention, www.nwcaonline.com/convention.cfm,
September 19-21 in Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches
Association Convention, www.brute.com/pwca, October 13-15 in Grantville,
PA. For more information on these, go to their websites. I would encourage
every wrestling coach at every level in Pennsylvania to attend the PWCA
Convention. I would also encourage every state to begin having a state
convention. In turn, I would encourage every district in the state of
Pennsylvania, or whatever your breakdown is in other states, to be sure
you are represented at the National Wrestling Coaches Convention. The more
organized wrestling is the more powerful voice wrestling will have. In the
world of athletic education always be looking for ways to expand your
numbers at every level.

Wrestling Training has a long history of success. Coach Turner directed
his first week of training at Lock Haven University in the summer of 1980.
He directed the training there for 11 summers. Coach Turner said, ÌÂI was

training could grow. I am deeply grateful to Lock Haven University and

COACHING THOUGHTS
Mental Training. Everything starts in the mind. Mat-Town USA has been
working with Brad Williams. You can go to his web page by clicking on
ÌÂMental Training̨ on the Mat-Town USA web page, www.mattownusa.com. He is
available for individual and group sessions. Attitude is everything, both
in training and in competition. We must each frame our minds to maximize
each training session and each competition bout. For me personally, my
mental attitude rests on the foundation of my Christian faith. I discuss
this more on my Turner Wrestling Training website, www.ntwrestle.com.
Click on ÌÂCoach Turner Discusses His Faith̨ and then click on ÌÂCoach
TurnerÌÐs Corner.̨ This will help you to see how I approach life and
coaching. I try to focus totally on becoming a better teacher of wrestling
every day. And I desire the same for every student to have a passion to
improve every training session. I want every student to train to defeat
opponents that they are not supposed to be able to defeat. You train to
defeat the best wrestlers in your weight class. Every training session is
a rehearsal and every bout is a main event. As we look to Tuesday,
September 12 and all the training after that, letÌÐs all report with a
desire for maximum concentration and intensity. Help me to get good
partner match-ups and letÌÐs maximize our time together.

===========================================
SUPPORT SYSTEM OF STUDENT-ATHLETE
I have changed the title of this segment because it is more than just the
family, although the family is the most important support group, but it
also includes grandparents, relatives, friends, teachers and, of course,
coaches. It really includes anyone who can influence the student wrestler
to make right choices in life, school and wrestling. All of us will have
an influence on those we are around. If you want that to be positive you
must realize that first and foremost is modeling. I need to ask myself and
so do you, if a student wrestler followed me around would I influence them
in a positive way? Words wonÌÐt do it if my life cancels out the words. Let
ÌÐs all work very hard to provide a very positive support system for our
wrestlers. Mat-Town USA has received many compliments for the wrestlers,
families and friends when we have been at competitions together. LetÌÐs
continue this in 2006-2007. Mat-Town USA, the mats are always down.

WRESTLING EDUCATION

2006-2007 MAT-TOWN USA MEMBERSHIP
We have had a good response to our membership drive. New members for
2006-2007 are listed on the website under ÌÂmembers̨. If you are interested
in supporting Mat-Town USA by becoming a member there is information on
how to do so under ÌÂMembership̨ on the website. Many are choosing to make
donations greater than the initial membership fee. The board of directors
would like everyone to know how appreciative they are for the support we
have received for the past 3 years. 2006-2007 represents our 4th year of
offering wrestling training and education. This would be impossible
without the tangible giving from individuals and businesses. Mat-Town USA
is like a mighty army. If you are not part of this army, consider joining
up today.

===========================================
CALENDAR
We have added a calendar of events to the Mat-Town website. If you have
any events you would like to have listed, just send us an email with the
details. Please be sure to give a website if there is one available for
more information. We have been gathering dates for PIAA States,
Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling, Middle Atlantic Wrestling, etc., so if you
like to plan ahead, be sure to take a look. We have listed the teams
participating in the 2006 Conestoga Valley Holiday Wrestling Classic on
December 29 and 30. Just click on the event and this gives you more
details. We are willing to do this for other events. Mat-Town USA is very
focused on wrestling promotion.

===========================================
NEW WRESTLING LINKS ADDED
Under ÌÂWrestling Links̨ on the Mat-Town website, we have created a new
category for equipment sources. Always keep in mind these businesses have
been very loyal for the support of the sport of wrestling. The greatest
thing we can do for them is increase the number of wrestlers in the United
States of America.

===========================================

===========================================
Until the next time, I hope each one of you does one of or all of the
following: train hard to improve; enjoy the challenge of competition;
coach wrestlers to be better citizens as well as competitors; encourage
everyone to either follow, participate in, or support the great sport of
wrestling. I do not want anyone on the sidelines. I want everyone who
receives this email to be involved in some way in introducing students to
wrestling and helping others to understand what it is to talk about the
education of wrestling.

===========================================
COACHING THOUGHTS
IÌÐm enjoying working with several individuals during this time. It really
gives me the opportunity to focus on units of movement and position. The
student must master certain units of movement to respond correctly in
given situations. Since wrestling is a very dynamic athletic activity,
there is almost no end to the possibility of different positions and the
correct movement in those positions. This requires a prioritization of
movements and positions that you rehearse. I have to make a decision on
this based on a couple factors, the first of which, what is happening in
the sport in this time in history and second, what is the athlete IÌÐm
working with most adept at doing. By studying the sport as a whole, you
are able to come up with required units that must be mastered by every
athlete. By studying the individual, you come up with units that that
individual must master. I really enjoy doing this and I hope to create
excitement in each athlete about doing the same thing. I will just give
one example. When getting off the bottom and the conditions for a switch
are present, the student-athlete must have mastered the ability to scoot
to the inside hip. Then using leverage, do a cross-understep and attack
the opponent. This would be a necessary required unit. An example of the s
pecial unit might be the inside leg trip from the neutral position when in
an over-and-under position. Some persons are going to be able to master
this with very little difficulty and then use it in competition. This is
how I want Mat-Town students to understand the art of wrestling.

===========================================
PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS
Many of the Mat-Town USA students are presently involved in a fall sport.
I would encourage the support system of each student to emphasize to the
student the importance of commitment and loyalty to that activity and to
the leadership of that activity during the period of time that activity is
in progress. These are character traits that need to be a way of life for
every student, both in and out of the classroom. Just remember, ÌÂshow up
on time and work hard̨.

===========================================
COACHING THOUGHTS
Having just finished working with students 7th grade and under, I canÌÐt
emphasize enough the importance of positional instruction. Every technique
must be broken into the individual units that make it up, then each unit
must be mastered until there is muscle memory. Then put all the units
together, just like gymnastics. When you do this, you will find there are
many similar units and these are the ones that must be rehearsed the most.
You can reinforce this with positional competition. The goal is the
student will never be in a position that they donÌÐt know what to do.
Successful coaching has not occurred until the student is responding
correctly in competition. Students, remember you do not have competitive
mastery of any technique until you use that particular technique in
competition when the correct position occurs. Correct positions are
created by your initiative or your opponentÌÐs response to your initiative.
You score when you have a superior position, so you must know how to put
yourself in a superior position. This change of units is never-ending. You
must know how to wrestle in a way that is to your advantage, so study
yourself very closely. This approach to mastering the art of wrestling
will make every training session a rewarding and fulfilling time of
preparation. If you just keep getting better, winning will take care of
itself.

===========================================
PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS
The support staff of each competitive wrestler must understand what I have
just written above. Just because a student wins doesnÌÐt mean they are a
good wrestler. They are a good wrestler if they are in the process of
mastering the art of wrestling in each and every situation. With this
approach you will see consistent improvement. Every training session
should be focusing on being able to defeat wrestlers that you could not
defeat previously. A very famous football coach said, ÌÂIf youÌÐre not
getting better, youÌÐre really getting worse because the other guy is
getting better.̨ This same formula will make you a better student and a
better worker, no matter what the task.

COACHING THOUGHTS
When I was running on the treadmill this morning, I was watching the tape
from Championship Productions titled ÌÂDan Gable: Coaching Mental Toughness
on the Mat.̨ I would encourage every coach, parent and wrestler to get a
copy of this and watch it. Then, more importantly, put these lessons into
practice. Go to www.championshipproductions.com to order. No matter what
we are doing, we should have a passion to do it better. Do not place any
limits on your improvement.

===========================================
PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS
Please be sure the wrestler in your family knows that if they need to
train or want to train they must contact us several days in advance of
each training session and we will try to help them to have a training
partner and coaching. It is never the number of individuals training. It
is having good partner match-ups and wrestlers with a passion to improve.

If you are not part of this army, consider joining
up today.

===========================================

===========================================
Until the next time, I hope each one of you does one of or all of the
following: train hard to improve; enjoy the challenge of competition;
coach wrestlers to be better citizens as well as competitors; encourage
everyone to either follow, participate in, or support the great sport of
wrestling. I do not want anyone on the sidelines. I want everyone who

COACHING THOUGHTS
Communication
As I prepare to go to Messiah College for a training session with over 400
student-athletes, as we get closer to this event, the importance of
communication between coaches, student-athletes and families becomes very
important. I would encourage all coaches to have complete contact
information on all of the students in your program, from youth, middle
school and junior high and high school. We try very hard at Mat-Town USA
to have everyoneÌÐs address, all phone numbers, including cell phones, and
emails. It is important to have this information on the family as well as
the student. We are living in an age when communication is a way of life,
so I would encourage every student and family be sure your coach has all
your contact information. If you are a part of Mat-Town USA, be sure you
keep us up to date on all your contact information. In Mat-Town USAÌÐs
case, this would be the family, the student and the coaches in your
district, as we try to work in concert with all of your coaches. WeÌÐre
living in a time when we all need to check our email on a daily basis,
just like we check for the mail and phone mail messages. Technology has
brought us all closer together. Mat-Town USA feels this is a great
advantage and we would encourage you all to take advantage of it in a
positive way.

services. All other monies go right back into doing everything possible to
enhance the training and development of the student wrestlers. If you like

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Training sessions will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Lock Haven University
Thomas Fieldhouse Wrestling Room. The USA Pennsylvania series is the
current focus of training. The road to Fargo starts at Mat-Town USA. We
are now preparing for the state championship June 16, 17 and 18 to be held
at Clarion University. We work on the integration of all 3 styles of
wrestling. If I did not believe strongly that learning to wrestle
freestyle and Greco will make the student a better folkstyle wrestler,
trust me, we would not be doing it. I am very focused on helping every
student improve for 2006-2007. Please join us.

===========================================
COACHING THOUGHTS
These thoughts are for coaches, athletes and family members.
* Maximizing every training session carries with it certain
responsibilities for the coach and certain responsibilities for the
student.
* The coach needs to show up early, be well-prepared and, to the best of
his or her ability, try to meet the needs of the students in attendance.
* The student needs to show up on time, place total trust in the
leadership of the training session and strive to do exactly what you are
asked to do.
* Both coach and student need to realize that just putting in the time
will produce very little results. There has to be a unity of effort and
commitment.

Please keep these thoughts in mind as you take advantage of different
training opportunities in the weeks ahead.

===========================================
PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS
* Be selective about competitions and know what your goals are.
* Be sure you have your wrestler signed up for summer training.
* Be very supportive of sports performance training. Physical fitness,
nutrition and overall wellness should be a priority for the whole family.
We used to say weight training, but thatís not enough in the 21st century.
Now we want to look at it as total fitness and sports specific training.
It is a lifestyle, not a seasonal thing.

===========================================
COMPETITION OPPORTUNITIES
* PAWF States at Clarion, June 16, 17 and 18 ñ www.usapawf.com. Please be
reminded that all of you who attended the April 2 training day are
eligible to compete in this event.

COACHING THOUGHTS
As we did in 2005, Mat-Town USA is very focused on the PAWF State
Championship, June 16,17 and 18 at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. If
you have qualified for this event, please join us on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. If you havenít qualified, you can still benefit from the
training, as every good wrestler needs excellent training partners.
Following the state tournament, we will continue to train hard to assist
those students who have qualified to go on to Fargo. Once again, we will
need more than those individuals to assure that we have good partner
match-ups. Great things can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the
credit.

===========================================
PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS
We would like to encourage all of you to make sure your wrestlers are
signed up for a week of summer camp. To see what options are available,
just go to the Mat-Town web page and click on ìOther Training
Opportunitiesî. We also have some of this information available at each
training session. If you were to ask me how to make the best choice, I
would answer you in the following manner: ìWhich training opportunity is
going to do the most to improve your competitive mastery of the art of
wrestling?î No training opportunity can guarantee you that youíre going to
be a champion and getting the autograph of some wrestling superstar will
not help you get off the bottom in less than 30 seconds.

===========================================
COMPETITION OPPORTUNITIES
Mat-Town USA will focus on the following PAWF Qualifier: the Northeast
Regional Championships, June 2 to 4 at Roger Williams University in
Bristol, RI. Entry forms for the regional championships can be downloaded
from www.themat.com. All midget, novice and schoolboy/girl wrestlers
participating in the freestyle and Greco-Roman regional tournament qualify
for the Kids National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships in Green
Bay, Wisconsin, June 28-July 1. All cadet wrestlers that place in the top
3 at this event qualify for the Cadet Nationals in Fargo, ND on July
22-29. You must still adhere to all state policies and you qualify only in
the style in which you place. Just go to www.usapawf.com for further
information on these events. A number of Mat-Town USA athletes are also
preparing for the Disney Duals, June 18 to 22. For information on this, go
to http://aausports.org/sprt_Wrestling.asp.

COMPETITION FOR GIRLS
See www.mattownusa.com under ìcompetitive opportunitiesî. There are
additional opportunities being offered by USA Pennsylvania. Contact person

MEDIA COVERAGE
Please check out our web page under ìWrestling Linksî for The Pennsylvania
Wrestling News. You may want to get a copy of the May issue. There is a
very good article regarding Pennsylvaniaís performance in all three NCAA
divisions. Pennsylvania had more All Americans in Division I and II than
any other state. I would like to encourage more coaches in Pennsylvania to
also have their athletes consider attending the Pennsylvania Division III
schools. I believe if that were to happen, Pennsylvania could lead all
three divisions. Please encourage your athletes to take a look at the
following schools: Gettysburg College, Muhlenburg College, Ursinus
College, York College, Albright College, Delaware Valley College,
Elizabethtown College, Kingís College, Lycoming College, Messiah College,
University of Scranton, Wilkes University, Thiel College, Washington &
Jefferson College and Waynesburg College. I personally believe there are
enough good wrestlers in Pennsylvania to continue to be a dominant power
in Division I and Division II, while moving up in Division III, so please
encourage your athletes to wrestle in college.

===========================================
Until the next time, I hope each one of you does one of or all of the
following: train hard to improve; enjoy the challenge of competition;
coach wrestlers to be better citizens as well as competitors; encourage
everyone to either follow, participate in, or support the great sport of
wrestling. I do not want anyone on the sidelines. I want everyone who
receives this email to be involved in some way in introducing students to
wrestling and helping others to understand what it is to talk about the
education of wrestling.

===========================================
COACHING THOUGHTS
My first coaching thoughts will be attributed to Mike Rogers, assistant
wrestling coach at Lock Haven University. In a tutoring session with a
student-athlete, Coach Rogers emphasized 3 very important points:
* Your opponentís body will go where the head goes.
* Control the head and control the body.
* Control the pace of the bout.
These 3 points emphasize the importance of having an attitude that is
reflected in action.

Discipline is a WINNING word. Discipline applied to life, training and
competition will make you more successful. Discipline is not having to do
something. Discipline is doing something in a certain way because I desire
the best results possible, both in the short and long term. Discipline
starts in the head, is applied by the heart, is manifest in action. This
will be evident in my life and my words. Decide what result you want and
discipline yourself to put yourself in a position to achieve the desired
result. Even if the desired result falls short, you will be a more mature
and trustworthy person -- a person others can respect and trust. Respect
and trust is far more important than being liked.

===========================================
PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS
Encouragement and support. That is what each wrestler needs. It is up to
the support system to provide the opportunities. It is up to the student
wrestler to take advantage of these opportunities. Parents, please stay
positive and I appreciate all your help. And I know the wrestlers do too.

western Pennsylvania: Waynesburg, May 20; Northeast, May 21 and Edinboro,
May 27. Just go to www.usapawf.com for further information on these
events.

Last chance qualifier for PAWF States ñ Tentatively Mat-Town USA will host
a training day Sunday, June 11. This will be 4 hours of training with
competition in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Attendance at this event will
qualify the wrestler for States June 16, 17 and 18. The fee will be $25
with a USA card. We will have more information next week on this. Mat-Town
USA is committed to working with PAWF to make certain that no
student-athlete who desires to be on the Pennsylvania team is left out.
Please send us an email if you can help out at this event. We will need
volunteers to help out with concessions, registration and the door. It
would also be good to hear from coaches and athletes who wil
