Cary's 11th State Championship in the Tournament
Some facts about our recent successes:
On Feb. 9th our wrestlers who the school's seventh Dual Team State Championship making it 3 in the last 4 years. Cary finished undefeated for the second year in a row and now has a record of 139-1 over these present seniors last four years. Justin Koren one of the senior captains was named the State Duals Outstanding Wrestler for the 4A.
The wrestlers followed that up by winning the State 4A Individual Championships on Feb. 23rd scoring a whopping 174 points which ranks second all-time in the 4A history. Five Cary wrestlers won State titles in their weight classes which tied a record. No team has placed at least four champions on three different occassions. Cary had four champions in the years 2000, 2007 and of course the five this year. In 1988 Cary had three champs.
This was Cary's 11th State Championship in the tournament: (Coach Winterton's 10th)
77,87,88,89,97,00,03,05,06,07,08
This was Cary's 7th State Dual Championship:
93,96,97,98,05,07,08
Coach Winterton has been at Cary since 1981.
Cary's State placers were:
5th place-Matt Colvard 10th grade wt. 135 57-8 record
2nd place-Gabe Brotzman 11th grade wt. 152 52-4 record
1st place-Ben Creed 9th grade wt. 103 record 55-6
1st place-Lawrence White 12th grade wt. 130 record 59-1
1st place-Justin Koren 12th grade wt. 140 record 58-0
1st place-Brendon Parker-Risk 12th grade record 55-1
1st place-Eloheim Palma 11th grade record 59-0
Justin Koren, Gabe Brotzman and Eloheim Palma are all NHSCA All-Americans from previous years. Brendon Parker-Risk and Justin Koren placed in the very tough nationally Super 32 tournament this past fall. Each kid could tell you more facts if you wish to contact them. Thanks

18X!!! Imps Take State With Five Individual Champs!
- Flash! Attention Mr and Mrs America, all the ships at sea, and Cary Imp fans from around the globe:
Cary grapplers have taken team State Championship number 18 at the NCHSAA Individual State championships in Winston-Salem!  All 9 Imps advancing to State by virtue of placing in the Regional tournament contributed wins to Championship #18, with 7 of the 9 placing (top 6). Josh (Lionheart) Cobb at 160# contributed a pin to the team tally, and a game but sore Cordale Risk at 119# came within one match of placing with 3 wins in an extremely stacked bracket. Matt Colvard at 135# wrestled a particularly challenging bracket as well, defeating some tough competition on the way to a fifth place finish. The Imps advanced 6 wrestlers to the State Championship finals, with a Cary record 5 taking the Individual Championship. Champion runner-up Gabe Brotzman at 152# showed guts and fire in facing 3X state champion Nick Gregoris of Chapel Hill,  frustrating Gregoris‚s best efforts with a tenacious and unrelenting aggression before finally falling in a minor decision. Returning State Champion and Junior Eloheim Palma added Individual State Championship #2 as a cap to his undefeated season by defeating also undefeated (up until he faced the E-train) Tyler Shately in the Heaeyweight final. Team Captain and returning State Champion Justin Koren also capped an undefeated season with another cool and efficient pin that was over in the time it took this author to look away and wave to a friend. By this author‚s unoffical count, the Lehigh-bound captain set the example for his team by going unscored upon during the tourney (making counting his opponent‚s points extremely easy). Senior Lawrence White capped an outstanding Cary career of his own with a solid State Championship victory at 130# over highly-touted J.C. Wagner of Laney. Sushi for you, Lawrence. Senior Brendan Parker-Risk again thrilled the crowd with a come-from-behind State Championship pin over Savva Kostis of Wautauga in the highly contested 145# bracket, repeating his stirring win in the finals of the Tiger. Brendan caps a high school career that includes placing as a Sophomore in Washington before moving to Cary and a third place finish a year ago with a convincing and dominant performance in a highly-competitive weight class stacked with top wrestlers. The out of nowhere award goes to Freshman Ben Creed at 103#, earning a State Championship against all non-Cary prognostications with a focused and controlled performance throughout the tourney. Ranked sixth by the critics going into the tourney, the 14 year-old showed poise, heart, and grit beyond his years in wrestling his way to becoming the first Freshman State Champion in the long and illustrious history of Cary Wrestling.

Wrestler
Dan McCollum, killed in Pakistan air crash
- By Mark W. E. Buford
-
- Dan McCollum, the co-pilot of the plane that crashed in Pakistan
yesterday was an Irmo H.S. wrestler in Columbia, SC graduating
in 1992. He then walked onto the Clemson wrestling program. He
was close to his high school wrestling coach, B.D. LaPrad. One
of his best friends, Lexington wrestling coach Derek Strobel,
had received a call days before he left to tell his friends he
had been assigned to go to Pakistan. He wrestled under coach
Gil Sanchez at Clemson and was a red shirt during the final season
of the program. Clemson finished 7th in the nation that year.
- Dan also achieved his Eagle Scout in 1991.
-
- Dan graduated from Clemson University in 1997 with a degree
in Mechanical Engineering.
- Dan was married in May 2001 and his wife,s first name is
Jen. They had just bought a house in San Diego where he was stationed.
Dan,s mom lives in Columbia, SC and is flying to San Diego today
to be with Jen.
- I remember Dan as one of the greatest young men to coach.
He was one of the hardest workers on the team. Strong as an ox
and he never gave up with any pursuit he strived for. Dan was
a great role model for everyone around him and he will be missed
dearly in our community. A moment of silence is being observed
this week at most of the area wrestling matches to honor Dan
McCollum.
-
- If there is anything else I can provide, even contact information
for friends and family I,d be glad to help. I was a volunteer
wrestling coach at the high school where he wrestled. Thanks,
-

SCMAT.COM
has posted South Carolina high school Individual wrestling rankings
and we need your help.
The 3A and 2A-1A Individual Rankings are much less robust compared
with 4A. Please help us identify the wrestlers that are not listed
in a weight class yet, that are not wrestling, that are in the
wrong weight class, and where we can improve on the rankings ---
both by giving credit to wrestlers that have beaten higher ranked
wrestlers and making recommendations on wrestlers that should
be added based on outstanding performance.
4A Rankings - http://www.scmat.com/4A_Rankings.ASP
3A Rankings ñ http://www.scmat.com/3A_Rankings.ASP
2A-1A Rankings - http://www.scmat.com/2A-1A_Rankings.ASP
We are also planning a revised Team Rankings this weekend and
recent Dual scores and suggestions will help us finalize this
poll.
Enjoy the holidays,
