Luke Worsham
Tennessee lost a great coach and educator when Luther T. "Luke"
Worsham passed away May 15, 2002 after succumbing to cancer. Luke,
also nicknamed "Maj", taught and coached at Baylor School
from 1949 until his retirement in 1991. He developed numerous
individual state and national wrestling champions winning the
team title at the Lehigh National Prep Tournament in 1970. Though
he also coached football and track, Major Worsham was most recognized
for his success and dedication to wrestling and previously had
been inducted into the Tennessee chapter of the National Wrestling
Hall of Fame for "life time service to wrestling." Not
limited to coaching, he gained further recognition by the Tennessee
Association of Independent Schools for his "distinguished
teaching and dedicated service". Even more fitting and indicative
of his influence on others were the words that former wrestlers,
students, and colleagues stated in describing traits that Major
Worsham exemplified and tried to instill in those around him:
honor, courage, sacrifice, pride, character, perseverance, fidelity,
love, and respect. On behalf of the Tennessee wrestling community:
"Thanks, Luke"
In preparation for the Junior Nationals, Team Tennessee took
dramatic strides to increase the level of success. Under the direction
of Team Leader Louise Davis who served as the brains and organizer
of the team, the wrestlers participated in an intensive three-day
training camp prior to their departure for Fargo. Kudos to Jon
Hill (Franklin), Shane Turner (Soddy) and Rick Campbell (Clarksville)
for their outstanding work as the team coaches and Joe Blair for
his work in hosting Team Tennessee Training Camp at Brentwood
High School. Additional assistance was provided by Rob Sherrill,
who also provided an incredible 20 hours of broadcasting directly
from Fargo over www.tennwrestling.com.
And speaking of Fargo:
After a phenomenal career at Bradley Central under head coach
Steve Logsdon
and assistant coach Heath Eslinger, Matt Keller heads to Nebraska
with hopes of a successful college career as a Cornhusker. One
of the most successful high school wrestlers to come from Tennessee,
Matt repeatedly proved his power on the wrestling mat as a four-time
state champion and two-time All-American place-finisher at the
Junior Nationals in Fargo. At this year's tournament, Keller defeated
five reigning state champions.
In addition to Keller, Brad Felix, Jordan Leen, and Jimmy Hiller
did very well at Fargo. Kyle James, Tim Manson, Bond Davis, Ryan
Scott, Charlie Warfield, Will Carson, Brandon Campbell, Ben Sharp,
and Matt Clark also represented Tennessee.
Amateur Wrestling News tagged Army wrestling sensation,
Phillip Simpson, as "the best 141-pound freshman in the NCAA."
Concluding a phenomenal season with 37 victories, 20 by fall,
Simpson continued to demonstrate his fireball type of aggressive
wrestling at West Point that we in Tennessee saw for years as
he grew and developed under the watchful eye of his father and
MBA head coach, Frank Simpson. Three-time state champion, Patrick,
also a son of Frank and Margaret Simpson, also will join the West
Point wrestling team.
Waylon Lowe, wrestling for The University of Findlay, Ohio
became that school's first Division II national champion winning
in the 149 lb. class at Wisconsin-Parkside last March. Lowe wrestled
at Jefferson County High School under Jeff Price, current head
coach at Science Hill.
Danny Micka, former Red Bank wrestler coached by Dickie Brown,
continued his wrestling success representing Georgia Tech at the
184 lb class winning the National Collegiate Wrestling Association
Championship at Lafayette College.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (formerly The University
of Chattanooga) has had only six head wrestling coaches in its
previous 51 years of competition. The advantage of being lucky
number seven goes to Terry Brands, who replaces Mark Leen. Brands
wrestled for Dan Gable at Iowa where he won two individual NCAA
championships after which he spent five years as Gable's assistant
coach. Brands went on to become a two-time World Champion and
Olympic Bronze medallist. He comes to Chattanooga highly regarded
as a competitor and as a coach. The UTC Mocs have a long and successful
wrestling history dominating their Southern Conference with 19
team championships, including four of the last five. The team
returns four individual conference champions: Austin David, Quantel
Langford, Matt Pitts and Jared Sullivan. A challenge eagerly accepted
by Brands is to move the team past the conference championships
and on to national prominence. Not since 1992 when Guy Harris
and Howard Langford each finished 8th has a U. T. C. wrestler
placed in the NCAA. Lee Fullhart and Heath Eslinger will ably
assist Brands. Regional wrestling fans are very excited about
the commitment demonstrated by the administration and the athletic
department in bringing such an outstanding coach and staff to
lead the "Mocs".
Speaking of Lee Fullhart, he demonstrated his prowess on the
mat winning the Challenge Tournament at the World Team Trials
recently held in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fullerton scored a 5-1 decision
over Charles Burton in the finals that gave him the opportunity
to challenge Cael Sanderson in a best-of-three competition. After
a first-match win, Fullerton lost the next two matches as Sanderson
went on to win the 84 kg spot on the USA World Team.
Another participant at the Minnesota tournament was former Antioch
standout, Kenny Owens. At present, Owens is ranked third on the
National Greco-Roman Team at 84 kg by virtue of his runner-up
finish to Brad Vering in the Challenge Tournament at the World
Team Trials. For the past nine years, Owens has placed in at least
15 international tournaments and almost twice that many national
tournaments including five championships in the U.S. Armed Forces
Tournament.
The Junior World Team Trials for the 20 and under age group held
their National Championships in East Ridge, Tennessee last May.
In freestyle, the "Most Falls" award went to Sean
Stender and the "Outstanding Wrestler" award went to
Zach Esposito. In Greco-Roman competition, Marco Lara won the
"Most Falls' award and Matt Nagel won the "Outstanding
Wrestler" award. As an indication of the success of this
tournament, the Championships will return to the Chattanooga area
in April of 2003 and in 2004.
Obviously a lot has happened in Tennessee Wrestling since last season. We take time to appreciate the accomplishments of the many who have contributed to the improvement of wrestling in our state, but we know this is a process. Now is the time for the next step. Bring on the 2002-2003 season.
