BL OPEN
Coaches, Wrestlers, and Supporters....please forward and get the work out!
The BL OPEN is still alive! I apologize for the huge delay. I have been in scramble for a place to host this meet again. Eastfield and BL were both in conflicts. So, I found a City Rec Center down the street and have worked everything out. I did not want to give up on this Open meet because of the interest and the need to keep alive that weekend. Having returned from the Super 32...we need to really start a National event in the Midwest/Texas area.
So, to all...I encourage all of your wrestlers to take part in such and keep this pre season, open meet going. There is nothing else to get your kids tested this weekend than mat time and evaluation. The BL Open is a great tester of where you kids stand. The flyer has all the information and do email or call for any questions. I do need ALL entries NLT: Nov 8th. I need the following:
Name
WT
School
NOTE: If he does not make weight, he will not compete. Mat side weigh in. This meet will be a round robin of wrestling up to 14 wrestlers in each wt class. After that, 16 man brackets...then, at some point this meet could and should be a "Super 32" down the road. This is an Open/Pre Season meet for all. Have a great season and see you next week!

Possible
NWCA All Star Classic in Texas this November
Just a quick note to let everyone know we are looking at the possibility of hosting the NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Assn) All Star Classic in Texas. This event brings together the NCAA Division I preseason top ranked wrestlers in the country to wrestle in an exhibition match (it doesn't count against their records). That means there would be 10 matches and usually a couple exhibition matches. It was held at Oklahoma State last November and Tervel Dlagnev wrestled one of the exhibitions (and won). I have posted an article below with the results of the competition and the results from the 2004 event as well. It is notable that a number of National Champions got beat in these matches. The quality of the wrestling is as good as the NCAA DI Championship Finals.
If you read the article, you will notice that they had nearly 5000 people attend. Obviously, the numbers were high because the event was held in Stillwater, but we would need lots of advertising to fill the stands. We would also need sponsors for each of the weight classes and the programs. There may be a possibility for a fundraiser through progrm ads or ticket sales. This event is only a success if we fill the stands. That means getting the Texas wrestling community behind us in this effort. The event will be televised by CSTV so full stands are important. The US Marines are a big sponsor and letting servicemen come for a reduced ticket price is a possibility. Intermat will cover this event because they are the NWCA site and the other wrestling press will be a part as well, but we need to get the word out in the state so we get the wrestling community to show up to support the event.
The date would be Nov 20th, a Monday night. We would use the Hilton as the host hotel and we would have to work to promote the event and fill the seats. We are looking at a venue size of 3,000-3,500 seats. I am not worried about physically running the event; we have the Befour clock with riding time and the Resilite mat, and we ran the Dream Team well as far as hosting and operation. We do it every year at the Lone Star Duals as well.
We need help in promotion and marketing. If you are interested, I am looking for input. We need to commit very soon, so email me with your thoughts. I am off to London tonight and will be back on Friday. The article is below.
Thanks,
Barry

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State hosted the 40th annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps on Monday night, but its wrestlers struggled in front of the home crowd of 4,854 inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The key to success was being an underdog as the lower ranked wrestler won seven of the ten matches. Of the six matches involving the top-ranked wrestler at their weight class, Jake Rosholt was the only one to come out victorious when he defeated Joel Flaggert at 197.
The night started with a heavyweight exhibition match involving two Division II wrestlers. Tervel Dlagnev of Nebraska-Kearney scored a 6-3 decision over Central Oklahoma,s Josh Leadingfox.
Then the All-Stars took the mat starting with Oklahoma,s third-ranked Sam Hazewinkel and Michigan State,s fourth-ranked Nick Simmons. Hazewinkel scored twice on shots initiated by Simmons and used it to propel him to a 6-3 victory.
The round of upsets started at 133 where fourth-ranked Darrell Vasquez of Cal Poly, who sat out all of last season with an illness, used two first period takedowns to stun Minnesota,s third-ranked Mack Reiter.
Second-ranked Nate Gallick of Iowa State defeated Oklahoma,s top-ranked Teyon Ware for the fifth time in his career. Ware,s only victory over Gallick came in the NCAA finals last season.
Zack Esposito was the first Cowboy to take the mat at 149. Esposito scored the first points over Michigan,s Eric Tannenbaum with a reversal in the second period. However, in the third period Tannenbaum got a reverse of his own that put Esposito on his back for a four-point move and a 5-3 lead in the match. Tannenbaum added a takedown and finished off the upset with a 7-3 decision over No. 1 Esposito.
Illinois, Alex Tirapelle showed why he was a two-time All-American before last season as he defeated Iowa,s top-ranked Joe Johnston.
Johny Hendricks was OSU,s second top-ranked wrestler to hit the mat when he faced Minnesota,s Matt Nagel at 165. The bout was the first overtime match of the night. Neither wrestler could score in the first sudden victory period, and both wrestlers added escapes in the tiebreaker period. Hendricks had the riding time advantage heading into the second round of overtimes, but it did not matter as Nagel scored a takedown with four seconds left in the second sudden victory period and won 5-3.
Third-ranked Jake Herbert of Northwestern was one of the few matches that held to form as he controlled Nebraska,s Jacob Klein from the beginning and earned an 8-5 decision.
Illinois, Pete Friedl scored the first takedown on Iowa,s Paul Bradley. Bradley eventually tied the match, but Friedl took the lead with an escape with 35 seconds remaining and No. 4 defeated No. 2 at 184.
It was Bedlam at 197 with the top two wrestler being from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. OSU,s Rosholt jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and a reversal and coasted over OU,s Flaggert..
"My match was ok, Rosholt said. "I did not stay focused for the whole seven minutes. That is something I identified that I need to work on.
OSU,s Steve Mocco and Minnesota,s Cole Konrad went at it at heavyweight in the last match of the night. The two wrestlers went into a tiebreaker, but this time the result was different then the past few times. Konrad took a one point lead when Mocco was called for locked hands, and Konrad iced it when he scored a reversal to earn a 4-1 overtime decision over top-ranked Mocco.
"Tonight, OSU wrestlers had trained hard for this and did everything we could, but we didn,t do it hard enough, Oklahoma State 165-pounder Hendricks said afterward. "We did not do the extras, like myself. I thought I was doing what I needed to do, but tonight showed me that even if you work hard, it doesn,t mean anything. You have to work smart too. Tonight, we did not do what we needed to, but we have time to change and that,s the main thing.

Just a quick note to keep everyone up to date:
1. There is a new file number for airfares posted on the website. Delta is the Official Airline and has special fares for the Lone Star Duals. They will also allow you to change the names on the tickets for your competitors in the event of a change. Call Delta at (800) 241-6760 and mention file number 206490A to get the rates. This is also posted on the website www.lonestarduals.com.
2. The invoices will be mailed over the next couple of days. If you have a special address or want it emailed, please email me asap.
3. The HS competition will have a couple of changes this year that should help us ensure the best teams are represented on the award stand. We will be bringing 12 teams forward on saturday morning instead of 8. The first session will be the #3 teams versus the #2 teams from different pools so that in the event of a pool being much stronger, there is a chance for the teams to settle t on the mat. The winners will meet the #1 teams in the 8-team bracket starting in session 2. We will also wait until Dec 15th to post the HS brackets. That way, we will have some results from this year's competition that should allow us to ensure that the pools are as close to equal in strength as we are able to make them. The advancement of the #3 teams should equalize any errors.
4.If you have not contacted the hotels, please do so. The links are on the website and the numbers are: Hilton - Cory Ruelas (817) 640-4715, Hawthorn Suites - Peggy Kahler (817) 640-1188. Again, the rates are $53 competitors, $67 fan rate.
5. I will be sending a letter to all teams shortly with additional instructions regarding the program, weigh-ins, transportation, workouts, computer information needs, coaches meetings, hospitality rooms, etc.
6. South Grand Prairie HS will be conducting classes on Friday, Jan 7th while the first day of high school competition is being held. As in the past, we will need the cooperation of all coaches to ensure that we respect the needs of the school and do not allow anyone to travel beyond the competition areas (the Coliseum, JV Gym, and Freshman Gym). We will address this again and it has not been a problem in the past, but I wanted to pass on a reminder.
7. Finally, please pass out the address of the website (www.lonestarduals.com) to all of your booster clubs and anyone else interested in attending the event. All information for the event will be posted over the next month, from competition schedules, travel information, transportation, program information, links, and ticket sales. We will again be selling general admission all-session tickets for: $20 adult, $15 high school students, $10 Jr High and younger. These tickets will get fans into all 14 sessions ( 7 sessions each day) and allow them to come and go as they wish. There will be 60 HS boys team duals on friday along with girls competition all day, and saturday will feature 38 college team duals, 18 HS Boys team duals, and the girls invitational medal matches for 1st-4th places.
I will send more information out shortly, call or email if you have questions.
Thanks,
Barry

4. Ben Ashmore
5. James Aston
6. Jack Kitchen
7. Keegan Mueller
8. Will "The Thrill" Rowe
Important note: The difference between number one and number
eight is so slim that they all might as well be tied for the top.
In my scoring system it's less than .5 point between top and bottom.
Zach Trammel is 40-0 with 26 pins and several wins over ranked
wrestlers here and in Oklahoma. He has also scored a fall to give
Martin the team title at Ark City Invite. He has been a team leader
this year. He has zoomed in the national rankings all the way
to 11th in the country. He is what we call a "money"
wrestler.
Luke Silver is 59-0. Enough said. He goes up to the brutal Oklahoma
Open, the Rio Rancho, Derby Kansas and El Reno and through all
those meets he has yet to lose. He also beat Texas top-ranked
112-pounder (UIL) Parker Ryan.
Ben Ashmore is 61-2. His two losses have come to the number four
and the number eight-ranked 112-pounders in America. My guess
is that if Ben were to wrestle either guy again he would win.
He dismantled Oklahoma's top 4-A 112-pounder 6-0 and manhandled
the number-three ranked 112-pounder the next day, during the El
Reno duals last week.
James Aston is back from gaining 2300 yards as a running back
for state champion Katy High School. So far he is 13-0 with all
but one match being a pin or a tech-fall. He has 67 takedowns
and has yet to yield a single point to an opponent other than
letting someone up so that he can take them down again.
Jack Kitchen is 28-0 in Texas and 34-1 overall. His only loss
is to the number-two ranked 171-pounder (David Craig of Brandon,
FL) in America and that was a tight match. Jack has beaten Keegan
Mueller in a very, very close match and has wins over five nationally
ranked wrestlers (Mueller, Caponi, Caputo, Chris Jones, Luke Feist).
Keegan Mueller has three losses. All of these are to nationally
ranked wrestlers (Jack Kitchen, Rocky Cozart and Brandon Mason).
Otherwise he has ran roughshod over everybody this season even
moving up to 171, even though he only weights 163. He could go
at 152 and be unstoppable.
Will Rowe. Nobody talks much about Will. He just goes out there
and demolishes everyone he wrestles and scores 8-10 takedowns
every match. His only losses this year are also to only nationally-ranked
wrestlers (Keegan Mueller, Brandon Mason and Shane Vernon) even
though Will has also moved up in weight one or two classes. Let's
not forget that this is a 145-pounder competing in higher weights
for more competition. Look for Will to place at the Senior Nationals
and at Fargo in the top 3 or 4 this year. Bank on it.
Wrestlers closing in on "elite" status: Matt Hobar,
Luke Ashmore (who was bumped for Jake), Matt Tiffin, Sean Glassel,
Kenny Halloran, Parker Ryan, Matt Sansone, Devin Velasquez, Fred
Rowsey, and a few others.
Thanks,

InsideTexasWrestling.com
Today
one of the coolest, hippest and most innovative wrestling websites
ever designed has gone live
You will find this site at:
www.insidetexaswrestling.com
Several weeks ago, I left my position as state media director
for Texas USA Wrestling to join a partnership with several other
people including nationally-recognized web designer Chris Drake,
and ranking analyst Shaun Shaikh (known as "The Observer")
to launch this site.
We have been joined by the dean of Texas High School officiating,
Mike McQueen in our venture.
What makes our site different? Speaking frankly, the big idea
around this site was to expand on my extremely popular column
on Texas USA Wrestling.com called "Inside Texas Wrestling."
We also wanted to capitalize on the popularity of "The Observer"
as a recognized authority on Texas High School wrestling rankings
and opinions. And, of course, Mike McQueen has always been known
as a blunt, "tell it like it is" kind of guy.
The last thing we wanted to do was just another "same-old"
website with the "same-old" lame content saying the
"same-old" lines. We want to provide our readers with
well-written and well-researched information that they can't get
anywhere else. To do that means we have to break boundaries and
to push tolerance to its greatest extreme. We will also update
the site on a frequent basis!
As for my former affiliation with TexasUSA Wrestling, our site
is not intended to be the one you pick over their site. Go to
both! We do things they don't do, and they do things we don't
do!
Our guiding principal: to always tell the truth and let the chips
fall where they may.
How do we do that?
Our main thrust is on crisply written and well thought out content.
We have spend the past several weeks writing over 17,000 words
of copy on a wide variety of topics that primarily interests fans
of amateur wrestling in Texas or with Texas angles. Again, this
is content you can not find anywhere else.
That said, people from all walks of the wrestling life will peruse
this site. You don't have to be from Texas or be a Texan to appreciate
this site!
We also do not shy away from topics or people that we think need
writing about. We have a column called "Clown of the Week"
where we expose people who we think act stupidly or act recklessly,
hiding within the bounds of this great sport. This week's clown
is indeed a clown and not a funny one either.
In our launch version, we dismantle the false phony facade of
a group of questionable individuals who are attempting to start
a new youth wrestling organization to compete with Texas USA Wrestling
and who have a companion website that borders on the absurd. We
expose these people for what they are - sore losers.
To us, there are now sacred cows. Nothing is off-limits.
Here is the editorial content of our launch edition:
*Jake Jackson, Keegan Mueller and Will Rowe, Unplugged
We talk turkey with this talented Texas Trio of top-ranked recruits
*The Lunatic Fringe Column
Allan Rodger, TKWA and txwrestle.com fiasco, deaths of wrestlers
from drugs, wrestling cheerleaders, Texas youth wrestling stars,
ten things I'd rather do than watch wrestling, and much, much
more
*The Dallas Report
We preview Highland Park and Bishop Lynch
*Texans in College Wrestling
Ben Heizer, Alejandro Alvarez, Keith Clifton, J.J. Holmes, Clay
Kehrer, Joe Comparin, Brad Medchill, Nathan Fox and others
*The Observer's Corner by Shaun Shaikh
Individual H.S. rankings
Team Rankings
The Houston Report
*The Third Man by Mike McQueen
*Wrestling Cheerleaders - your time has come!
And much, much more!
And, just for you, a forum where you can share your thoughts and
opinions on what you read on the new website:
Warning: Do not go to this site if you are expecting the same
old song and dance!
Here's to the launch!
On behalf of Chris Drake, Shaun Shaikh, Mike McQueen and the others
involved in InsideTexasWrestling we thank you.

We
lost Larry Aust, a great friend and an institution in Texas wrestling
Just a sad note to let everyone know that we lost a great friend and an institution in Texas wrestling yesterday with the passing of Larry Aust. He died of the complications from cancer treatment.
While it was Stephen Ross and Poly America that financed TAWA, it was Larry's heart and energy that created the giant that it became. Many of you only saw him in the last few years as a tournament director for the high school competition at the Lone Star Duals, but if not for Larry, they never would have come about.
There are many people who have given time and energy to the sport in Texas, but I can't think of anyone who comes close to Larry in having a positive impact on the thousands of kids he worked with over the years. The Cotton Bowl Classic, TAWA, and the Lone Star Duals would never have come about without his leadership, hard work, and support. Larry was gruff on the outside, but he loved every kid he worked with and they all knew it. We will all miss him.
I will let everyone know the details as I get them. Please pass this on to any kids you have who were involved in Poly America wrestling or TAWA.
Thanks,
Barry

Hilton
Arlington Lone Star Duals 2002
By Barry Boustead
What do Brown, Cornell, Central Oklahoma, Missouri Baptist, Neosho, Princeton, Oklahoma, Stanford, and Wyoming all have in common? They all have, or have had, Texas wrestlers competing for them. What else do they have in common? They are all competing in the Hilton Arlington Lone Star Duals 2002 in Grand Prairie, Texas on January 5th. (Grand Prairie is located between Dallas and Ft. Worth).
This year's competition will have the greatest number of Texas wrestlers ever to compete in the state as college wrestlers. While Texas has no NCAA or NAIA sanctioned collegiate programs, the number of wrestlers from the Lone Star State competing for teams nationwide has increased dramatically. Although Olympic Champion Brandon Slay is certainly the most well known, programs from all over the country are recruiting from a dramatically increasing talent pool. With the adoption of wrestling as a UIL sanctioned high school sport just a few years ago, the numbers have skyrocketed in both boys and girls programs throughout the state.
Since the first Lone Star Duals competition occurred on January 3, 1998 between Brown, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Wisconsin, the event has grown in size to a field of 18 colleges, 24 high school boys teams, and a girls invitational with 16 competitors per weight class. This is a great opportunity for Texas wrestlers to be exposed to high level collegiate wrestling. It also allows college coaches from around the nation to watch Texas wrestlers from all over the state during the high school competition. In a state the size of Texas, that is a big help. The colleges competing this year are: Brown, Cal Poly, Central Oklahoma, Cornell, Embry-Riddle, Harvard, Missouri Baptist, Navy, Nebraska, Nebraska-Kearney, Neosho, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Princeton, Stanford, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. With Oklahoma and Oklahoma State ranked in the top 5 nationally and Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Cornell ranked in the top 25, the field is once again very strong and should provide for some very exciting matches.
The weather is usually relatively good during January and the location is great with many other activities and sightseeing opportunities available in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex. Information regarding individual match-ups, competition times, and ticket availability is posted on the web site at: www.lonestarduals.com.
