NHSCA Summer Wrestling Update

Greetings from the NHSCA staff! The past few months have been filled with outstanding wrestling competition.

The National Duals in Salisbury, MD in May was a huge success featuring 77 teams (over 1,100 wrestlers) from around the country. The Southeast PA team ran away with the High School Division championship; the New Jersey Eagles clinched the Middle School Division Title; the Virginia Thunder Elementary team was the victor in that division.

Sunny Virginia Beach hosted the 8th Annual National Open in June. Twenty-nine states were represented by 1,069 wrestlers. Congratulations to all of the Outstanding Wrestlers: Jimmy Gulibon, Elementary Division at 65#; Hunter Meys, Middle School Division at 140#; Braden Bice, High School Division at 275#; Mark Delesdernier, Open Division. The state of Pennsylvania scored a total of 679.5 points, securing the all-division state team title. PA was led by Rob Waller's All-American Club, which crowned 17 All-Americans. Georgia came in second place, followed by New York, Virginia, then Florida.

The National Open Pre-Season Wrestling Championship is sure to be the next big event for wrestlers and fans! Join us November 12-13, 2005 in Winston-Salem, NC at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Last year, outstanding wrestlers from 25 states competed, perfecting their skills in preparation for their upcoming season. The NHSCA is offering all 4 divisions for this event: elementary, middle school, high school and college/open.  In 2004, the high school division alone had over 55 state finalists competing. The top 6 place-winners will receive beautiful awards and will qualify for the prestigious 2006 National Open Wrestling Championships.

For more information on any of these events, visit our website <http://www.NHSCA.com>www.NHSCA.com. As always, thank you for your continued support of the NHSCA!

High school athletics participation breaks 7 million mark

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 1, 2005) - The number of participants in high school athletics increased for the 16th consecutive year in 2004-05 and topped 7 million for the first time in history.

Based on figures from the 50 state high school athletic/activity associations, plus the District of Columbia, that are members of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), participation for the 2004-05 school year rose by 115,157 students, to 7,018,709, according to the 2004-05 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS. The survey also determined that nearly 53 percent of students enrolled in high schools participate in athletics.

"We are thrilled to have more than 7 million students in our nation's high schools participating in athletic programs," said Robert F. Kanaby, NFHS executive director. "The consistent increase in participation among the youth of our country and the fact that well over half of all enrolled students are competing in high school activities are true testaments to the impact these activities have on millions of lives across the country."

In addition to overall numbers, the girls participation total of 2,908,390 set an all-time record. The boys total also increased, reaching 4,110,319, the highest participation in the past 27 years. This year's boys participation figure is second only to the record 4,367,442 in 1977-78.
Track and field gained the most female participants in 2004-05 with 9,212, followed by soccer with 7,072, indoor track and field with 5,237, and cross country with 4,163, which moved that sport from seventh to sixth in popularity.

Eleven-player football gained the most participants among boys sports in 2004-05 with 12,812, followed by outdoor track and field with 11,902 additional participants, swimming and diving (7,192), lacrosse (6,557) and cross country (5,291).

Some of the emerging sports had the largest percentage increases in participants. Bowling registered the largest percentage increase among boys sports with a 14 percent jump (from 17,654 to 20,534), followed closely by lacrosse with an 11 percent increase (from 53,436 to 59,993). Among girls sports, bowling (13 percent), lacrosse (10 percent), and indoor track and field (10 percent) registered the largest percentage increases.

Thanks to the start of snowboarding programs in California, that sport registered the largest percentage gains in the number of schools sponsoring programs at 85 percent for boys and 89 percent for girls.

Basketball remained the most popular sport for girls with 456,543 participants, followed by outdoor track and field (428,198), volleyball (386,022), fast pitch softball (364,759), soccer (316,104), cross country (170,450), tennis (169,292), swimming and diving (148,154), competitive spirit squads (84,416) and golf (64,245).

On the boys' side, 11-player football was again the most popular sport with 1,045,494 participants, followed by basketball (545,497), outdoor track and field (516,703), baseball (459,717), soccer (354,587), wrestling (243,009), cross country (201,719), golf (161,025), tennis (148,530), and swimming and diving (103,754).

Texas remained the state with the most participants with 740,052, followed by California (678,019), New York (350,349), Michigan (311,814), Illinois (310,791), Ohio (310,585), Pennsylvania (262,859), Minnesota (233,070) New Jersey (228,388) and Florida (219,040).

The participation survey has been compiled since 1971 by the NFHS through numbers it receives from its member associations. The complete 2004-05 Participation Survey will be available soon on the NFHS Web site <www.nfhs.org>.

IT COULD BE WORSE

An Autobiography by Bob McPhee

It Could Be Worse, chronicles the authors life, including the day that he was paralyzed while playing in a high school football scrimmage in Maine in 1976.The book contains events beginning three weeks prior to the unfortunate incident. The writings continue with details of the hospital emergency room, a life-saving operation and a coma lasting 17 days.

During nearly three years of rehabilitation, McPhee was advised to move out of state in order to receive a college education. He ignored these words, eventually enrolling in a Maine college. He transferred to University of Maine in 1981, graduating in 1984 with a B.A. in Journalism.

Readers have commented that IT COULD BE WORSE, is "Powerful," "Devastating to Truimphant," "Inspirational," and "A Good Read."

Sumo Wrestling in Las Vegas - Tickets On Sale

TICKETS FOR GRAND SUMO CHAMPIONSHIP

AT MANDALAY BAY EVENTS CENTER IN LAS VEGAS

OCTOBER 7, 8 & 9 NOW ON SALE

SUMO WRESTLING COMES TO LAS VEGAS
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE SPORT'S 1,500-YEAR HISTORY

LAS VEGAS (July 27, 2005) Tickets are now on sale for the three-day Grand Sumo Championship tournament Oct. 7-9, 2005, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. The Japan Sumo Association, the supreme governing body of the sport, will bring 40 of the highest-ranked professional sumo athletes in the world to compete in the tournament.

Tickets for this exciting weekend of sport and culture are priced at $175, $125 and $75 per session and can be purchased at the Mandalay Bay Box Office and all TicketMaster outlets. To order tickets by phone, call (702) 632-7580 or toll-free 877-632-7400.

Heading the field will be Asashoryu, the current Yokozuna (grand champion) of sumo. While there can be more than one Yokozuna, Asashoryu currently stands alone at the pinnacle of the sport. At only 24 years old, the native Mongolian has conquered Japan with his prowess. He is immensely popular and is poised to hold the traditional belt for years to come.

Event organizers will ensure a truly authentic experience by having a special crew construct the dohyo (sumo ring) that meets all the requirements of the sport, including the proper mixture of clay and sand as well as the correct deployment of the tawara (rice-straw bales). Further, a traditional yakata (the roof over the sumo ring) will be imported from Japan for this tournament.

Grand Sumo Las Vegas is being produced by Hakuhodo DY Media Partners, Inc. of Japan, in association with Mandalay Bay and is sponsored in part by Toshiba and Japan Airlines. The producer, Dan Yoshida, who also promoted the 1985 Grand Sumo event in New York, brought the Las Vegas icons Siegfried & Roy to Japan for one year, as well as tours by Cirque de Soleil and other artists.  Yoshida has been doing the Cirque de Soleil show in Japan for 15 years.

As 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of the city of Las Vegas, Mandalay Bay has delivered many world championship boxing bouts and now brings the Grand Sumo Championship to help commemorate a truly unique town.

This year's sumo events will take place Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Grand Sumo Invades Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Oct. 7-9

Friday, Oct. 7 - Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005

Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada

LAS VEGAS (July 21, 2005) - The Japan Sumo Association, the supreme governing body of the sport, will bring sumo to Las Vegas for the first time in the sport's 1,500-year history for the three-day Grand Sumo Championship tournament Oct. 7-9, 2005, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

The highest level sumo athletes (Makunouchi Rikishi) will compete in the Grand Sumo Championship. A champion will be determined each day of the tournament with a Grand Champion crowned Sunday after the final match. The last Grand Sumo three-day tournament in the United States took place in June 1985 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Bill Hornbuckle, president and chief operating officer for Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, said, "The Grand Sumo Championship is a unique sports and cultural event for Las Vegas. We look forward to hosting the spectacular tournament at the Events Center in October."

"After our incredible experience in New York, it was just a matter of finding the perfect situation before we brought sumo back to America," Yoshida said. "Mandalay Bay has provided us with just that circumstance."

Sumo transcends sport in Japan as it is interwoven with the culture. Each portion of the bout, including every move and the construction of the dohyo, is governed by rules coded over centuries. Although forms of sumo can be traced back 1,500 years, the traditions and rituals of the Japanese Edo period (1603-1867) are the basis for today's competitions.

The Japan Sumo Association, the governing body of the sport, was formed in 1925. The association operates and controls all aspects of professional sumo wrestling in Japan from the rules of the dohyo to the training of new sumo wrestlers.

Toshimitsu Kitanoumi, chairman of the Japan Sumo Association, said, "Our Association works to preserve Grand Sumo's traditional culture valuing the courtesies and rituals cultivated over its long history built up by ceaseless efforts of our predecessors."

As 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of the city of Las Vegas, Mandalay Bay has delivered many world championship boxing bouts and now brings the Grand Sumo Tournament to help commemorate a truly unique town.

This year's sumo events will take place Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

2005 Beach Championships

WRESTLING FAN ALERT

It is not too many times that wrestling gets an opportunity to receive pre-meet coverage of any of its major events in the nation's largest newspaper, USA Today. The Metropolitan Wrestling Association and its partners USA Wrestling and NYC2012 hosted the 2003 World Freestyle Championships that attracted 12,500 fans to the finals never received one inch of pre event publicity in any major newspaper let alone the New York Times or NY Daily news.

For some of you who may not have seen the article that appeared Tuesday in USA Today is simply quite amazing. There was a front page listing, a banner with a photoin the Sports Section and a 3/4 second page story on page 3 with  additional 3 photo's about the 2005 Asics Beach Wrestling Championships being held at Long Beach, Long Island on Aug. 13th, 2005. If you missed it, click the link and save it as it maybe the only one of its kind for a while.

As Neil Duncan, a partner in TW Promotions for Asics stated eloquently when asked what does Asics get out of this being that the competitors do not wear shoes. His answer was, " I am in wrestling and anything that helps wrestling is good for Asics and lets give it a shot."

Wrestling needs to be in front of people as we do not have enough people involved either as competitors or as fans.

If we build the fan base, the competitors will come and we know we have millions of potential wrestlers and fans in the largest urban centers of America who wouldn't know real wrestling from Smackdown if they tripped over it.

Please support the effort by either attending, telling others to attend and if you can, send a contribution to the beneficiary of the entire event, the USAW/MWA Beat the Streets Program.

Go to <http://www.mwausa.org/>www.mwausa.org for more information about the tournament and the Beat the Streets Program and how you can help building the base of wrestling in the largest city in the United States. There are well over 1.2 million kids in the schools today who would love to wrestle. Your small donation would go a long way to building wrestling in the United States.

Please resend to your special friends and associates.

Kolat and Sharpie Offer Free Clinics, Collecting Autographs in Santa Fe At AAU Grand Nationals

AMATEUR WRESTLING CHAMPION CARY KOLAT BRINGS NATIONWIDE SHARPIE RETRACTABLE "AUTOGRAPHS FOR EDUCATION" PROGRAM TO SANTA FE

Kolat offers free wrestling clinics at Santa Fe "AAU Grand Nationals" and collects autographs from youth wrestlers, coaches and parents to support education

SANTA FE, NM, JULY 13, 2005 - Former Olympian Cary Kolat has signed his share of autographs, respected by many experts as one of the best amateur wrestlers of all time. Kolat is now visiting the Santa Fe AAU Grand Nationals July 13-16, offering free wrestling clinics and collecting signatures to benefit education. The effort supports the nationwide Sharpie Retractable "Autographs for Education" program.

Sharpie is asking for one million autographs from everyday people in exchange for $1 million in supplies and funds to schools through its Sharpie Retractable "Autographs for Education" program in 2005.

Well-known as the autograph pen of choice, Sharpie is enlisting the support of celebrities and athletes like Cary Kolat to appeal to communities across the country. As the Sharpie Retractable "Autographs for Education" tour stops in Santa Fe, Kolat is inviting students, coaches, parents and the community in general to put their autograph on education. The Kolat Wrestling clinics will be held from 7:30 to 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 13 - Saturday, July 16 at the Toby Roybal Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Santa Fe High School.

"We are asking for autographs from everyday people - not just celebrities," said Kolat. "It's fun to turn the tables a bit and collect autographs. It's also a great way to give back to youth wrestling."

Sharpie is elevating its pledge to the nation's schools throughout 2005, recognizing essential needs resulting from funding challenges schools face.

"This year's program is the most comprehensive community effort in the brand's more than 40-year history," said Rory Leyden, president of Sharpie. "Although we have executed this program on a local level since 2003, we've broadened its reach this year in terms of the dollar amount donated and the addition of college scholarships. We're certain we'll reach the million mark for autographs because of partners like Cary Kolat and passionate wrestling fans."

Sharpie Retractable's commitment to Autographs for Education also includes online resources for teachers and fun for students, including free lesson plans and a virtual autograph wall. In the community, Sharpie's Autographs for Education tour will criss-cross the country in a fleet of Sharpie-branded all-terrain vehicles throughout 2005, stopping at local festivals and special events. The vehicles feature interactive games, product sampling opportunities, and official entry forms for the signature collection effort. Complete entry methods for the signature collection effort can be found at retailers nationwide and at www.sharpie.com.

Inspired after a Sharpie marker was featured in a high-profile and somewhat controversial professional touchdown celebration in 2002, the Sharpie Retractable Autographs for Education program has been bringing motivation, funds and school supplies to students, teachers and schools for two years. Since its inception, Sharpie Autographs for Education personalities have included NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Champion Kurt Busch, PGA TOUR player Chad Campbell, NFL Hall of Famer and broadcaster Howie Long, Philadelphia's Terrell Owens, Pittsburgh's Hines Ward, Green Bay's Donald Driver, Denver's Rod Smith, Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez, Seattle's Grant Wistrom, and Minnesota's Brad Johnson and amateur wrestling's Cary Kolat among others.

About Sharpie Retractable
With a retractable writing tip and no caps to lose, Sharpie markers are now easier and more convenient to use. Sharpie Retractable is available in eight colors: black, red, blue, green, orange, berry, lime and turquoise. The suggested retail price for 2-, 3-, 4-, and 8-packs are $4.89, $7.33, $9.78, and $19.56, respectively. Available at office supply stores and other retailers nationwide, Sharpie Retractable joins other significant writing innovations that target a wide range of enthusiasts from the hobbyist to the do-it-yourselfer.

most effective practice activities to use to ingrain the instinctive
actions and reactions essential for wrestling success.

The THE WRESTLING DRILL BOOK features match-tested drills, carefully
chosen by coaches who are experts in the specific techniques and tactics
they cover. Each drill is described in detail with illustrations,

Paris or New York City to be host city for the Games of the XXX Olympiad

6 June 2005 significant date in American History..the Landing in France by American Forces in 1944 . if we didn't they would now be talking German]
On 6 July 2005, the International Olympic Committee will elect the host city for the Games of the XXX Olympiad. The voting members will all receive a copy of the IOC Evaluation Commission,s report ahead of this decision, which will provide them with a technical analysis of the five Candidate Cities. Below is some background information on the make-up of the IOC membership and on who will be eligible to vote on 6 July.

Composition of the IOC membership
The IOC is currently composed of 116 members, including the President, Jacques Rogge. Members are elected either as independent individuals, as active athletes, or as presidents or persons holding an executive or senior leadership position within an International Federation (IF) or a National Olympic Committee (NOC). There is, in addition to the 116 members, an Honorary President for Life, 20 honorary members, and three honour members, none of whom have the right to vote.

At the moment, 22 members are presidents of an NOC, six have the role of vice-president, and four are secretaries general.
Fourteen members are presidents or secretaries general of an Olympic IF and nine are vice-presidents.
Nineteen IOC members are also members of the Athletes, Commission, the majority of whom were elected by the athletes themselves: 12 members were elected by the athletes taking part in the Olympic Games, and seven members were appointed by the IOC President to ensure a fair balance of gender, sports and geographical regions.

Role of the members
Members of the IOC represent and promote the interests of the IOC and the Olympic Movement in their countries and in the organisations of the Olympic Movement in which they serve. (N.B. they do not represent their country in the IOC, as is often wrongly believed.) They meet each year for the IOC Session in order to make decisions on the institution and the Olympic Games, such as the election of the host cities for the Olympic Games, changes to the Olympic Charter, the election of the IOC president, vice-presidents and Executive Board members, as well as the co-option of new members.

A sporting past
Over a third of IOC members have competed in the Olympic Games, with 25 winning medals. In all, 69 medals have been won by the IOC members: 32 gold, 23 silver and 14 bronze. IOC President Jacques Rogge participated in three editions of the Olympic Games in sailing (Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976). Many more IOC members have competed in a sport at world championship level.

Who will vote on 6 July?
In the first round of the election for the host city of the 2012 Olympic Games, 16 of the 116 members will not vote: President Jacques Rogge, who elects not to vote, the members from countries who have candidate cities: France (Jean-Claude Killy, Guy Drut and Henri Serandour), the USA (Anita L. DeFrantz, James L. Easton and Robert Ctvrtlik), Russian Federation (Vitaly Smirnov, Shamil Tarpishev and Alexander Popov), Great Britain (HRH The Princess Royal, Craig Reedie and Phil Craven) and Spain (Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón and Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr), and one member, Ivan Slavkov, who has been deprived of his rights, prerogatives and functions. This leaves 100 members who will have the right to vote in the first round (assuming all are present in Singapore). In the second, the members from the country that has been eliminated (for having received the least votes) will be able to join in the vote.

Another closer look at Paris or New York City... let them know by contacting the IOC by phone or fax. There is absolutely no comparison in any way to the value of New York City over Paris. Simply look at the comparison in wrestling alone, as we all know, is not the media's best friend and we were able to produce a major event for a minor sport of the IOC...not minor to us!

Kassandra Jo Krumrie, the daughter of The Wrestling Mall Senior Editor Matt Krumrie, needs your support. A benefit is being held for Kassy Saturday, June 25th at the Red Barn VFW in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. While most of the wrestling community cannot make the benefit, read on below to find out how you can help out and about Kassy's fight.

Kassy is a 4 12 year old girl who has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and global developmental delays. Kassy is not able to talk, stand up, crawl, walk, feed herself, or care for herself without the assistance of others.

But she is a very happy little girl that lights up a room with her beautiful smile and determination. She has the physical abilities to do these things, but right now the light bulb connecting her cognitive ability to that physical ability has not gone off. But the light is flickering, and that is the purpose of this benefit.

In her short but sweet life she has been treated by doctors at St. Paul Children's Hospital, Gillette Children's Hospital, the University of Minnesota Hospitals, and Mayo Clinic.

However, there has been no actual diagnosis to why Kassy was born with these conditions, and she remains a mystery to those in the medical community.

She is currently involved in the special education program at Hilltop Elementary in Inver Grove Heights, where she goes to school five days a week. Since she was six months old she has also been going to regular physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy sessions

The support received from the benefit will be able to help provide the necessary adaptive equipment, continue to allow her to attend current and new forms of therapy sessions, and continued medical appointments that gives Kassy hope for the present and the future.

Now is the time for the wrestling community to come together, and support Kassy. Time is short, but if you feel you can donate something for a raffle or silent auction let us know. Or, if you would like to contribute in other ways, information on the Kassandra Jo Krumrie benefit fund is listed below. For more information please contact Matt at benefitforkassy@yahoo.com, or call him at 651-238-1290.

Let's come together and help Kassy in the biggest match of her life. Let's do what the wrestling community does take care of our own. Attached is a flyer with information about the benefit for those who can attend.

Beach Wrestling in NY in August

A first for the world's newest sport!!!!

ASICS 2005 East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships to be held on Long Island, N.Y. on Saturday, August 13

ASICS America Corporation of Irvine, CA is proud to announce its support and sponsorship of the world's newest sport:  Beach Wrestling.

During last summer's Olympic Games in Athens Greece, FILA, the international wrestling federation, announced that Beach Wrestling would be added as a new international wrestling style.

The first truly national-level event in the United States, the ASICS 2005 East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships, will be held in the city of Long Beach, N.Y., which is on Long Island, on Saturday, August 13. The competition will be sanctioned by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling.

When announcing the new sport, FILA expressed its intention to create an opportunity for economically disadvantaged countries to compete in the World's Oldest Sport. Many countries have hosted ethnic forms of this style for thousands of years.  Athletes around the world will now be able to compete for World medals in both men's and women's divisions, as the sport develops as planned. It is also a recreational sport that will interest new people about wrestling.

The ASICS 2005 East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships will be held where thousands of people go to relax, exercise and enjoy a beautiful environment. It is hoped that this venue will enhance the general public's interest, understanding and appreciation of amateur wrestling.

All excess revenues generated from this competition will be donated to the Metropolitan Wrestling Association's [MWA] Beat The Streets program. The MWA's long term goal is to establish folkstyle wrestling in all 150 NYC high schools, while creating a model to introduce and develop the sport in the nation's urban areas. There are currently 25 high schools with wrestling in New York City.

With train access to and from New York City, an elevated two mile Coney Island-style boardwalk, dozens of local eateries, and miles of surf and sand, Long Beach is an ideal site to introduce the general public to wrestling. Long Beach HS has won numerous state and Nassau County honors in folkstyle wrestling, and the local community is very supportive of the sport.

"The City of Long Beach is proud to be hosting the ASICS 2005 East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships," said City Council President James P. Hennessy. "Long Beach has a storied wrestling tradition, having produced many county and state champions and six NCAA Div. I All-Americans. Our community is very familiar with wrestling and has a great appreciation for the sport. We welcome everyone to visit our City by the Sea, and discover for themselves why Long Beach is such a popular destination of visit or to live."

The event will have four divisions: High School, College, Open and Women. The high school athletes will compete is four weight classes, each of which will be determined after registration based on the size of the contestants. The other divisions will have two weight classes each.

The rules for Beach Wrestling are simple. Men wear athletic swimming trunks and women wear a one or two piece bathing suit. Athletes wrestle on a sand surface, with a 20-foot diameter circle marked in the sand. Matches start in the standing position and last three minutes. Athletes may not kick or punch or attack the face or hair.

To win a Beach Wrestling match, an athlete must do one of the following:

·       Score a fall by forcing the opponents shoulders to the sand
·       Score two takedowns
·       Score two throws
·       When the opponent is penalized twice for fleeing the competition area
·       Scoring one takedown and having one fleeing call against the opponent
·       After the three-minute period ends, the match is determined by these criteria: 1. First takedown or throw; 2. First wrestler penalized for fleeing; 3. penalties; 4. Officials decision

ASICS America Corporation has been the offical equipment supplier of USA Wrestling since 1984. ASICS is internationally recognized for consistently creating some of the world's most technologically advanced athletic footwear and apparel.

Specific information on registration, entry fees and schedule will be announced shortly.

Additional information on the ASICS East Coast Beach Wrestling Nationals can be obtained by calling Sally Schmitt of TW Promotions, Inc. at 631-588-4343 x104, or by e-mailing Sallytwp@aol.com

Media inquiries concerning the event should be made to Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling at 719-598-8181 or via e-mail at gabbott@usawrestling.org

Weight-management Program Headlines High School Wrestling Rules Revisions

By Jerry Diehl

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 22, 2005) - Rules addressing weight-management headlined the 15 rules approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee April 10-11 at its annual meeting in Indianapolis. The rules subsequently were approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

The most significant rule change is the complete rewriting of Rule 1-3, which outlines a weight-management program. Under the revised rule, beginning in 2006-07, stronger guidelines discouraging rapid weight loss will take effect. The revised rule includes a hydration level not to exceed 1.025, a body fat assessment no lower than 7 percent (males)/12 percent (females) and a monitored, weekly weight loss plan not to exceed 1.5 percent a week.

"The weight management rule change effective 2006-07 is certainly monumental," said Dave Carlsrud, assistant to executive secretary of the North Dakota High School Activities Association and chairperson of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee. "While weight management has been researched for many years and may have been passed earlier, a number of our states needed time to prepare for an effective implementation."

Another rule revision that involves the weight issue is Rule 4-5-5, which decreases the amount of weight a wrestler is able to acquire during days of consecutive competition. In the past, wrestlers could gain a pound for each day of consecutive competition. However, under the new rule, a maximum of two pounds will be allowed, regardless of how many consecutive days are spent in competition.

"In the spirit of good weight management, the committee addressed the issue of the additional pound allowance for consecutive days of competition," Carlsrud said. "Now there will be a maximum of two pounds allowed regardless of the number of consecutive days teams may be competing."

Other rules that address the issue of risk minimization are Rules 4-3-3 and 7-1-2. Under the change to 4-3-3, all pads worn by wrestlers must fit snugly against the wrestler's body, in order to prevent a hand getting between the pad and the wrestler. This rule would include equipment that has lost its elasticity, as well as new products that leave a gap. Rule 7-1-2 addresses two moves that will be made illegal - the straight-back suplay and the straight-back salto to the head. Although the moves are seldom used, they present a high level of risk when performed, either standing or on the mat.

The remaining 11 rules changes are indicated in the attached listing of 2005-06 NFHS wrestling rules changes.

Lastly, the major Point of Emphasis for 2005-06 is communicable skin conditions, which was a Point of Emphasis in 2002-03 as well. Among the suggested practices that coaches and athletes should take are the daily disinfecting of all mats, immediate showering and washing of clothes and towels after practice, use of antibacterial or deodorant soap when showering, use of detergent with bleach or drying clothes on "high" setting, use of clean practice and match wear which should be separated from dirty clothing when taken to and from school, consistent trimming of fingernails, and daily disinfecting of all gear including head gear, shoes and neoprene sleeves.

Wrestling is the sixth-most popular sport for boys at the high school level, with 238,700 participants, according to the 2003-04 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS. It also ranks eighth in school sponsorship for boys with 9,526 high schools offering the sport.

NFHS 2005-06 Rules Changes

1-1-2 When multi-dual meet competition is held, the first weight class to be competed in for the subsequent dual shall be one greater than the starting weight class from the previous round.

1-3
Beginning in 2006-07, each state association shall develop and utilize a weight-management program that includes a specific gravity not to exceed 1.025; a body fat assessment no lower than 7% males/12% females and a monitored weekly weight loss plan not to exceed 1.5% a week.

3-1-1
Tournament administration may provide a common shirt for officials that must be worn at this particular event.

4-1-1a
The definition of a shirt worn under the sleeveless uniform shirt has been more clearly defined by adding that the shirt must be tight-fitting and short-sleeved.

4-1-1c
The language requiring a suitable undergarment if no tights are worn has been deleted.

4-3-3
When a pad(s) is worn, it shall fit snugly against the wrestler's body.

4-5-5
Competitors are now restricted to a maximum of 2 pounds for consecutive days of competition.

Rule 5
The definitions for a Bye, Caution and Stalling, has been duplicated and placed in Rule 5.

5-1-4
The definition for Bad Time has been expanded to include any errors in match scoring.

7-1-2
A full, straight-back suplay and the straight-back salto to the head are illegal.

8-1-2c
An exception has been added indicating that the match will not be stopped when warning the offensive wrestler when the defensive wrestler has come to the standing position.

8-1-6
The penalty for flagrant misconduct has been increased from two team points to three.

8-2-1
During the Tiebreaker, the wrestler who has the choice of position following the opponent's second injury time-out is restricted to the offensive, defensive or defer choices.

Signal Chart
A signal has been added to indicate Coach's Misconduct.

Points of Emphasis
1. Communicable Skin Conditions
2. Pre-Meet Duties: Ear Guards and Other Special Equipment
3. Officiating the Tiebreaker
4. Mat Set-Up
5. Use of the Assistant Referee

Semifinals:
DeAnda (New York Outrage) decision over Schatzman (Chicago Groove), 16-1
Roberson (Iowa Stalkers) decision over Warren (Oklahoma Slam), 19-8

Finals (May 15th):
DeAnda (New York Outrage) vs. Roberson (Iowa Stalkers)

Teams
California Claw; Chicago Groove; Iowa Stalkers; Oklahoma Slam; Minnesota

On Sunday's installment of Real Pro Wrestling, which showed competition in the 132-pound weight class, it was an episode filled with drama, excitement, and dominating performances.  However, upsets seemed to tell the story, as the top four seeds failed to reach the semifinals.

When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, two unlikely finalists emerged in Tony DeAnda of the New York Outrage, the fifth seed, and Zach Roberson of the Iowa Stalkers, the seventh seed.  Both advanced to the Real Pro Wrestling finals, with dominating semifinal performances.  The finals match-up between DeAnda and Roberson will air in episode eight on May 15th.

DeAnda, a 2003 Pan American Silver Medalist, used a pair of takedowns and an ankle lace to pace him to an 8-4 quarterfinal victory over fourth-seeded Danny Felix of the Texas Shooters.

In the semifinals, DeAnda completely dominated eighth-seeded Scott Schatzman of the Chicago Groove in every position.  DeAnda wasted little time against Schatzman, scoring a takedown and three gut wrenches in the first forty-five seconds of the match to take an early 8-0 lead.  He cruised to an easy 16-1 technical victory to advance to the finals.
DeAnda, who came to the United States from Mexico (and is one of the few foreign-born wrestlers in RPW), was dominant in the par terre position, where he scored nearly half of his points.

"I knew that's what I had to do early," said DeAnda.  "If I waited too long, until the end of the match, he was going to be too sweaty.  There are no singlets here.  We're trying to show off the bodies, I'm ready to go.  I knew that if I got him down early, I was going to turn him, no problem."

Roberson, a 2004 NCAA Champion and three-time All-American for Iowa State, reached the finals by winning a 16-12 overtime thriller over second-seeded Ryan Lewis of the Minnesota Freeze in the quarterfinals.  It was a back and forth battle, as both wrestlers traded leads throughout the match.  In overtime, with the score tied at 12, Roberson shot a double leg and exposed Lewis' back in the process, giving him the victory.
The 24-year-old Roberson, who split matches with Lewis while in college, had high praise for his opponent after the match.

"I knew that it was going to be a tough match," said Roberson.  "Ryan Lewis is always coming after you, and he never stops wrestling."

In the semifinals, Roberson dominated sixth-seeded Joe Warren of the Oklahoma Slam, 19-8, to advance to the finals.

"I knew that he was going to be coming after me the whole time, so I had to counter with some leg attacks and stay away out of his upper body stuff," Roberson said after defeating Warren.

Throughout his first two matches, Roberson showed a diverse arsenal of attacks, scoring with excellent techniques both on his feet and in the par terre position.

Interestingly, the only two Olympians competing, Dennis Hall of the California Claw and James Gruenwald of the Pennsylvania Hammer, lost their opening round matches.

Hall, the top seed and a former Olympic Silver Medalist, sustained an injury to his head during his quarterfinal match against Schatzman, eventually dropping a 13-2 decision.  Hall had trouble defending his legs, as Schatzman got in on multiple shots throughout the match.

Gruenwald, the third seed, had the unfortunate draw of wrestling against his Olympic training partner, Warren, in the quarterfinals.  Last May, Gruenwald defeated Warren to qualify for the 2004 Olympic team in Greco-Roman.  This time, however, Warren was able to turn the tables, using a relentless, attacking style to earn a 16-6 decision over the 34-year-old Gruenwald.

Wade Schalles Resigned AAU

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Yesterday, after being a part of the AAU family for almost 8 years to the day, I submitted my resignation to President Dodd. As much as I really loved coming to work and being part of this organization it was time. My last day will be next Friday and Tony Staley mailto:tony@aausports.org has been assigned to sit in my chair and assume the lion's share of my duties. When you need help with AAU things that you use to come to me with, please email Tony instead now. He's very bright and capable but somewhat younger than I so be gentle.

For those who are curious, Deb and I are staying here in Orlando and I'll be on-call for the AAU to assist with the various programs that have shared space on my plate. Personally I know I'm going to do some writing and catch up on some long overlooked yard work while I think about what that next step might be. My new email address for non-business related correspondances is wschalles@cfl.rr.com.

On a personal note, I want to take this time to thank each and everyone of you for many things. For being there when my duties required us to interact . . . that made my job the most pleasant of all. For helping others when they needed help for that is what makes the AAU a family. For overlooking my impetuousness when we might have worked together and my focus was directed more towards achieving a goal. But most of all for being a team of professionals during those crazy times when each of our various responsibilities collided on the same week.

And for all of these things, and many more, I thank-you.

ASICS Signs a Bevy of New Wrestlers

Irvine, CA (March 30, 2005) ASICS America Corporation recently signed several key wrestlers to their already prestigious list of sponsored wrestlers.

ASICS is proud to announce the re-signing of the beloved Rulon Gardner.  Gardner wowed audiences around the world when he publicly retired from his prestigious wrestling career at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens by leaving his ASICS wrestling shoes alone on the mat symbolizing his retirement.  Rulon has been on a rollercoaster of highs and lows over the last few years.  After his inspiring gold medal win against Russian, Alexander Karelin at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Rulon survived a snowmobiling accident in 2002 that left him stranded in the backcountry of Wyoming, a motorcycle accident near the Olympic Training Center in Colorado in 2004 and a week before the US Championships in 2004 he broke his wrist during a game of basketball.  Through all this, Rulon continued his efforts to make it back in shape for the 2004 Olympics and ended his career with an emotional match to take the bronze medal.  Gardner's role with ASICS will be to preside on its Advisory board.  ASICS will also pay tribute to Gardner with a specially designed wrestling shoe, "Rulon" which will be available June 1, 2005.

Dremiel Byers has placed is almost every competition in both the US and International markets throughout his successful career in wrestling.  An alumni of North Carolina A&T, he is not only a dedicated wrestler but also holds the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and a member of U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program.  Byers won the World Championships in 2002 and in the same year placed second at the Pan American Championships.  Byers, also a long time friend and foe to Rulon Gardner, placed second behind Gardner in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.  Byers earned the title of U.S. National Outstanding Wrestler for 2004, and the 2002 U.S. Army Male Athlete of the Year.

Tommy Rowlands, a recent graduate of Ohio State University, was a two-time NCAA Champion (2002 and 2004) for the Buckeyes.  The Columbus, Ohio native placed fourth at the 2004 US Olympic Team Trials after finishing in the same spot earlier in the year at US Nationals.  Rowlands had a distinguished junior career, winning two Ohio State Championships and the 2000 FILA Junior Nationals in both Greco-Roman and freestyle.  In 1999, he was named to ASICS High School All-American first team.  He will continue training in Columbus and will compete for the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club.

Jesse Jantzen from Shoreham, NY was the 2004 NCAA Champion at 66kg/ 145.5 pounds for Tim Flynn's Harvard squad.  He placed third at the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Championships after qualifying for the 2001 meet as a freshman.  Jantzen put himself into the record books by becoming the first New York prep to win four state wrestling titles.  He also won two junior national championships and was named ASICS High School Wrestler of the Year in 2000.

ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes, technical active sports apparel and accessories.  ASICS wrestling product line includes footwear, apparel and accessories.  For more information, please visit www.asicamerica.com/wrestling.

Former Olympian and Amateur Wrestling Champion Has The "Write Stuff," Joins Forces With Sharpie® and Paper mate®

Cary Kolat heading up popular consumer brands' efforts to support the wrestling community

OAK BROOK, Ill., March 30, 2005 - Sharpie® and Paper Mate®, highly recognized brands of writing instruments, today announced that 2000 Olympic team wrestler and two-time NCAA champion Cary Kolat will spearhead the Sharpie and Paper Mate grassroots marketing effort in amateur wrestling as its National Marketing Manager, Wrestling. In this role, Kolat will manage advertising, public relations and event marketing activities targeting the fans of youth, high school and college wrestling.

By tapping Kolat's knowledge of the sport, Newell Rubbermaid can now leverage its Paper Mate and Sharpie products with the strong loyalty of wrestling fans. The company intends to expand upon its efforts in amateur wrestling, including sponsorship of major tournaments such as the Dapper Dan Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa., and intensify its focus with Kolat's help. Prior to his latest assignment, Kolat held several marketing positions with the company.

"I know it takes dedication to succeed in wrestling, and Paper Mate and Sharpie are committed to supporting wrestling," said Cary Kolat, national marketing manager, wrestling for Sharpie and Paper Mate. "I'm happy to take the lead in showing wrestling enthusiasts what these great brands have to offer."

Many wrestling experts believe Kolat is one of the all-time best amateur wrestling champions. In high school, Kolat was a four-time Pennsylvania State Champion with a 137 - 0 record from 1988 to 1992. He was also the 1990 World Champion for the under 18-age group. In college, he competed at the NCAA Division I level earning All-American status four times and twice winning individual NCAA National Champion titles.

Internationally, he represented the United States from 1997 through 2000. He won a bronze (1998) and silver medal (1997) at the World Championships and was a member of the 2000 Olympic Team that competed in Sydney, Australia. Since this time, Cary has served as coach at several colleges and universities. Cary's complete biography and wrestling accomplishments can be found at www.carykolat.com

"Cary brings solid knowledge of Sharpie and Paper Mate, combined with an understanding of wrestling that will be a powerful asset," said Charlie McCaffrey, vice president and general manager for Paper Mate. "From the classroom to the scorer's table at meets, Sharpie and Paper Mate products are part of wrestling now. With Cary's insider's perspective, we will continue to foster our relationship with students, teachers and families nationwide."

Paper Mate and Sharpie are planning to unveil a comprehensive wrestling plan later this year, including major sponsorships and promotions for 2005 and 2006 geared toward the athletes and their families.

Founded in 2002, RealProWrestling is based in Nashville, Tenn. and is
the creation of two former Northwestern collegiate wrestling teammates,
Toby Willis and Matt Case.

"Finally, the world's best wrestlers can earn a living at what they do
best," said Willis, co-founder and CEO. "Wrestling fans deserve to see
their heroes compete against the best in the world."

According to the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA), more
than one million wrestlers participated in collegiate and high school
programs in the United States in 2003 with an additional 20 million
individuals currently living in America having participated in the sport
of wrestling in the past. Studies by National Federation of High
Schools (NFHS) show that wrestling is the sixth highest participant
sport in America despite not having a professional league or marketing
efforts.

The league consists of eight teams from around the country made up of
seven different weight classes ranging from 55 kg/125 lbs. to 120 kg/250
lbs. Regional teams will include the New York Outrage, California Claw,
Chicago Groove, Iowa Stalkers, Oklahoma Slam, Minnesota Freeze,

Matches take place atop a specially designed elevated circular wrestling

RPW Featured in Sports Illustrated, March 21st Issue

This week, RealProWrestling is featured in the leading national sports magazine Sports Illustrated, through an exceptional full-page article written by journalist Bill Syken. Article excerpt:

For decades amateur wrestlers have resented the "professional" version of their sport -- not just for its choreographed action, bad acting and buxom ring valets but also because that being a part of that spectacle was the only way to make big money for doing anything even resembling wrestling. The amateurs, with their iron discipline and abs to match, remained true to their sport and spent their careers mostly grappling for medals. "Look at baseball, football or basketball players," says Jeff Prescott, a two-time NCAA champion who now coaches high school and club wrestling in South Florida. "I'm not taking anything away from those athletes, but I know how tough my sport is. I know not one of those guys could make it through my wrestling [training] room for one week."

For more of this article, see the March 21st issue of Sports llustrated at your local newsstand.

NCAAs & RPW Sneak Peak

As RealProWrestling continues the national marketing campaign leading up to the launch, we just want to point out a few cool things. Our new commercials are starting to run on FSN, PAX, ESPN, the Military Channel, and a few other stations on television. Also we are starting to run radio commercials too.

We are also continuing to promote RPW at tournaments around the nation. This weekend is the biggest one yet - in St. Louis for the NCAA Division 1 Championships. Look for us at the WIN memorabilia show and especially Friday at the World Premiere and Pre-Screening of RPW Episode One.

That's right, we have reserved the "big tent" right outside the Hard Rock Cafe to preview the first RPW episode on big televisions to the fans at the NCAA tournament. But we only have tickets for about 1600 people. Sessions are at 1:15 pm, 3:30 pm, and 9:30 pm.

You have to get a ticket to enter. While they last, tickets will be available at the RPW booth at the WIN memorabilia show or from one of RPW's employees.

If you can't make the NCAAs, at least watch them for the RPW commercials during the broadcast on ESPN 5pm EST. Also check out the action of the earlier rounds on the new ESPN U channel Thursday and Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (March 14, 2005) - The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has announced its NFHS Coaches Association state, sectional and national award recipients for 2004. These coaching awards are not "single season" achievement awards, but rather reward coaches for a cumulative career of accomplishments, not necessarily all of which take place on the court or field. They must have been active coaches during the year for which they received their award. The awards presented in 2005 recognize coaches selected in 2004 for the previous season.

The NFHS began recognizing coaches through an awards program in 1982. Over the years, the awards have changed in format, but the current system is to recognize coaches in the top 10 girls sports and the top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers) and in one "other" category that is not included in these other 20 categories.

The top 10 categories for girls are as follows: basketball, outdoor track and field, volleyball, softball (fast-pitch), soccer, tennis, cross country, swimming and diving, field hockey and golf. The top 10 boys' sports are football, basketball, outdoor track and field, baseball, soccer, wrestling, cross country, golf, tennis, and swimming and diving.

The NFHS has a contact person in each state who is responsible for selecting deserving coach award recipients in that state. Sometimes this contact person works in the state high school athletic/activities association, and in others the contact is someone who is active in the NFHS Coaches Association. This contact person often works with the state coaches' associations in their respective states. He/she contacts the potential state award recipients to complete a coach profile form that requests information regarding the coach's record, membership in and affiliation with coaching and other professional organizations, involvement with other school and community activities and programs, and coaching philosophy. To be approved as an award recipient and considered for sectional and national coach of the year consideration, this profile form must be completed by the coach or designee and then signed by the executive director (or designee) of the state athletic/activities association.

The next award level after state coach of the year is sectional coach of the year. The NFHS is divided into eight geographical sections. They are as follows: Section 1 Northeast (CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI and VT); Section 2 Mideast (DE, DC, KY, MD, OH, PA, VA,WV); Section 3 South (AL, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN); Section 4 Central (IL, IN, IA, MI, WI); Section 5 Midwest (KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD); Section 6 Southwest (AR, CO, NM, OK, TX); Section 7 West (AZ, CA, HI, NV, UT), and Section 8 Northwest (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY).
The NFHS Coaches Association has an advisory board with a chair and eight sectional representatives who consider the state award recipients from the states in their respective sections and select the best candidates for the sectional award in each sport category. They forward those recommendations to the NFHS national office in Indianapolis.

The national selection committee considers the sectional candidates in each sport, ranks them according to a point system, and determines a national winner for each of the 20 sport categories, plus the one "other" category.

This year, the NFHS recognized 362 state coaches, 121 sectional coaches, and 21 national coaches of the year. Since 1982, Michigan leads the states in national coach recipients with 20, followed by New Jersey with 19 and Kansas with 17. The complete listings of national, sectional and state award winners are available on the NFHS Web site <www.nfhs.org>. Attached is a listing of the 2004 national coaches of the year.
