Cliff Keen Athletic is Proud to Announce its Support of ABC TV? Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Premiere Sunday
Ann Arbor, MI -- Cliff Keen Athletic is proud to announce its support of ABC TV? Extreme Makeover: Home Edition premiere Sunday, September 24 at 7/6 c.
The season kickoff project, which must remain secret until the show airs, features the Rogers Family of North Pole, Alaska. The thirteen-member extended family lived in an un-insulated, 2-bedroom and 3/4 bath home that had no foundation and only enough hot water for one warm shower. The house was actually beginning to come down around them.
That?¥ús when the Extreme Makeover Team jumped into action and decided to help this very deserving family. Cliff Keen? part was to come. "I received a phone call from one of the field producers," says Tom Keen of Cliff Keen Athletic. "They communicated to me that the young boys in the family were heavily involved in the sport of wrestling and asked if we would be able to help." Cliff Keen Athletic jumped in with both feet. "It? actually quite ironic; my wife and I love this show and watch it every Sunday. It? one of those shows that brings out the good in people and demonstrates that communities can still pull together to help out their neighbor. So of course we said we would contribute in any way we could what do you need from us?" Not really being wrestling experts, the team at Extreme Makeover: Home Edition left it up to Cliff Keen Athletic to come up with what would really make a difference to help this family.
Everybody at Cliff Keen Athletic turned the place upside down to get all the items that were needed. "We weren given much time at all" says Jim Keen of Cliff Keen Athletic. "They needed product, and they needed it right away. Much of it was custom, which can take several weeks to produce. We only had a few days." True to the nature of the show, Cliff Keen Athletic delivered just in the nick of time.
Tune in Sunday, September 24 at 7/6 c to catch this episode that any wrestling family is sure to love.

Hydration for High School Wrestlers
High school wrestlers and their coaches should include Accelerade brand sports drink and Accel Gel energy gel as part of their hydration program and in preparation for, and recovery from, the rigors of competition.åÊ
åÊWhere all of the other sports drinks and energy gels consist strictly of carbohydrates, the Accelerade includes carbohydrates and protein ‰¥ã in a ratio of 4:1 - in all of their supplements. According to the Accelerade people, the inclusion of protein in these products speeds the movement of carbs into muscle tissue and as a result provides rapid hydration, provides much needed energy and help muscles to recover faster after exercise.
åÊAccelerade has rankled the big guy on the block ‰¥ã Gatorade ‰¥ã with the claim of having devised a better energy and recovery formula.åÊ As a matter of fact Gatorade, while evaluating whether or not to develop their own protein-added product, paid for a study to be done by researchers at Canada‰¥ús McMaster University to determine if claims that protein can serve to boost performance during exercise.
åÊThe researchers involved in the McMaster study concluded that protein doesn‰¥út have a direct effect on endurance performance, but concedes that protein should be consumed after exercise to aid the body‰¥ús recovery process.
åÊIt appears that Gatorade took this step since researchers at James Madison University found that the protein-added Accelerade out performed Gatorade with regard to both endurance and recovery.åÊ The Accelerade people are touting another study performed at the University of Texas that seems to back up the ‰¥þprotein-added is better‰¥ÿ claim.
åÊQuite frankly there is an awful lot of research out there on this subject that supports the claims of both sides of this argument.åÊ And there are an awful lot of people out there who still feel that all an athlete needs for energy and recovery is to drink water.åÊ And all of these folks have a point, to a point.åÊ
åÊBut since I‰¥úm not on anyone‰¥ús side and all I care about is helping athletes reach their potential, I‰¥úm here to give you a little does of common sense and to support the reasons for my recommendation to include Accelerade products as a part of a wrestler‰¥ús routine.
åÊAnd I think that you should know that I don‰¥út get paid by Accelerade, nor has Accelerade given me products in exchange for my recommendation.åÊ As a matter of fact I will take well over $100 out of my own pocket this year to buy these products for the high school football team that I coach and where I am the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.
åÊThe problem with a lot of these studies is that the subjects are basically cyclists and runners.åÊ Of the 16 studies that Accelerade provides as support for their claims half of them involve cyclists; the other seven involve swimming, running, skiing and soccer; and one involves hockey, the only contact sport in the group.åÊ The Gatorade/McMaster study involved cyclists as well.
åÊI don‰¥út need to tell you guys that wrestling and these other sports don‰¥út have all that much in common, especially cyclists.åÊ If you‰¥úre the type of person who wants to see proof from research, you can find plenty of it on either side of the issue and as a result will want to bang your head against a wall as a result of all of the conflicting data.
åÊSo here‰¥ús some common sense that may help you see your way through this issue.åÊ There is no arguing that protein is vital to the development and maintenance of muscle, and there has been a sizable amount of research that has been done to indicate that ingesting protein prior to and/or immediately following rigorous training or competition results in greater muscle protein balance for both resistance-based and endurance-based exercise.
åÊProtein is a building block of muscle tissue, so how could the Accelerade products that include carbohydrates and protein in an appropriate ratio NOT be valuable to wrestlers?åÊ Wrestlers place demands on their bodies that require both different means of preparation and different needs of recovery.åÊ Even if some of these other products are better for cyclists and distance runners and soccer players, this does not mean that they are better for wrestlers.åÊ But I‰¥úll bet you already figured that out.
åÊAnd if you are of the ‰¥þall you need is water‰¥ÿ school of thought, you need to update your thinking.åÊ Water is vital, and it must be the cornerstone of any hydration program.åÊ But as an energy source or as an aid to recovery after extreme bouts of training or competition, water needs some help and that help can come from Accelerade.åÊ We‰¥úre not replacing the effects of water with Accelerade, we‰¥úre assisting them.
At the same time Accelerade ‰¥ã or any other products of this kind ‰¥ã must be used in conjunction with water and food.åÊ These products are supplements and should be used as such.åÊ This is why coaches and athletic trainers need to develop and implement a hydration and nutrition program that incorporates the fundamentals of diet along with the advances that have been made in the field of sports nutrition.
The Structure of Real Pro Wrestling, Season Two
All professional sports league have their own unique format for its system of competition and ways of determining its champions. This article clearly explains how RPW will be unique in its format, pitting the best wrestlers in the world against each other in the upcoming 2006-07 season, otherwise known as ‰¥þSeason Two.‰¥ÿ

These eight wrestlers at each weight class then compete in a single-elimination bracket to determine the 2006-07 RPW Regional Champions.
Weight classifications: Olympic weights + 6 lbs. (2.7 kg) allowance - 121 (127) lbs., 132 (138) lbs., 145 (151) lbs., 163 (169) lbs., 185 (191) lbs., 211 (217) lbs., 264 (270) lbs.

The next step is for the four RPW Regional Champions at each weight class to compete in the 2006-07 RPW Super Qualifier. This will result in a maximum of eight wrestlers per weight class being entered into the 2006-07 Super Qualifier.
Weight classifications: Olympic weights + 5 lbs. (2.3 kg) allowance - 121 (126) lbs., 132 (137) lbs., 145 (150) lbs., 163 (168) lbs., 185 (190) lbs., 211 (216) lbs., 264 (269) lbs.

Roster Selection

Teams will be the same as Season One. Those teams in order of their Season One finish were the Iowa Stalkers (91 points), Pennsylvania Hammer (64 points), Oklahoma Slam (60 points), New York Outrage (57 points), California Claw (47 points), Chicago Groove (36 points), Texas Shooters (13 points), and the Minnesota Freeze (1 point).
The Regular Season
The biggest difference between Season One and Season Two will be the format used to determine RPW䴜s team champions. Whereas Season One featured each team entering a wrestler into a single-elimination bracket at each weight class, Season Two will be carried out in a head-to-head, team dual meet format. Possibly the most significant addition to this season's meets will be the live events in each team's area, which will further add to the excitement.
The regular season will play out over a span of eight weeks. Each week will feature a dual meet between two teams. During the eight weeks, each team will wrestle in a total of two dual meets, one home and one away.
Week 1: Team 1 vs Team 8, Week 2: Team 2 vs Team 7, Week 3: Team 3 vs Team 4, Week 4: Team 5 vs Team 6, and so on...

Team Championship
After teams have wrestled in two regular season dual meets each, the two best teams will be chosen to wrestle in one final dual meet.
This final dual meet will take place in the ninth week of the season, and the winner of this dual will be crowned the RPW Season Two Team Champion.
Individual Championship
RPW fans will be in for a special treat in week ten. In the last week of the season, every wrestler on an RPW roster will compete in an intense RPW Season Two Individual Championship Tournament. This tournament will crown an individual RPW Champion at each weight class. All 56 RPW athletes will compete for this title.

Top fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger will be honored as an Outstanding American by the New York State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame
Contact: Lee Roy Smith, (405) 377-5243
Top fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger will be honored as an Outstanding American by the New York State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Sept. 17 at the Wyndham Hotel in East Syracuse, N.Y.
The Outstanding American award, offered at both the state and the national level, honors people who have wrestled at some point of their lives, but who have achieved greatness in fields beyond wrestling.
Hilfiger, who grew up and wrestled at Elmira Free Academy in Elmira, N.Y., launched his first signature menswear collection in 1984 and has since expanded the brand䴜s product lines to include everything from clothing for men, women and children, to fragrance and home furnishings. The familiar red, white and blue Tommy logo is globally recognized.
The second oldest of nine children, Hilfiger began wrestling at age 15 because he was ‰¥þtoo small to play football and too short for basketball.‰¥ÿ
‰¥þWrestling was a perfect fit,‰¥ÿ he says. ‰¥þI wrestled for three years. While I was not very successful, my brother Bobby was a true champion who I greatly admired for his strength and athleticism. My brother Andy wrestled as well for 10 years.‰¥ÿ
Lack of success on the mat, however, was not a predictor for his post-wrestling career. From the sport, he says, he learned discipline that has helped him in every aspect of life.
‰¥þI learned that you could be as successful as you wanted to be depending on how hard you worked,‰¥ÿ he says.
Hilfiger worked hard, netting $11 million within the first two years of launching his line, and growing steadily over the last two decades. The greatest accomplishment of his career, he says, is ‰¥þbeing successful enough to support many wonderful causes which encourage and help young people realize their potential.‰¥ÿ
He established the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation in 1995 to enrich the physical and intellectual well being of youth. He is also active on boards of directors for several organizations that impact children.
Hilfiger has been honored numerous times for his fashion designs, including the 1995 Menswear Designer of the Year from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
The Outstanding American Award, is, however, his first wrestling award.
He will be honored alongside other New Yorkers to be recognized for Lifetime Service to the sport from the New York State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The New York Chapter is one of 31 active state chapters across the country that serves to extend the mission of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, to ‰¥þpreserve the heritage of the sport, recognize outstanding individual achievement and inspire youth to lofty goals.‰¥ÿ The National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Tickets for the award banquet in Syracuse are available by calling Jack Stanbro at (607) 729-9562 or e-mailing Jstanbro@stny.rr.com.
When ABC‰¥ús ‰¥þExtreme Makeover: Home Edition‰¥ÿ was looking for a wrestling mat to include as part of a room design for a well-deserving family, they contacted Resilite Sports ProductsFor more information on the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, visit www.wrestlinghalloffame.org.
NORTHUMBERLAND, PA :åÊåÊ When ABC‰¥ús ‰¥þExtreme Makeover: Home Edition‰¥ÿ was looking for a wrestling mat to include as part of a room design for a well-deserving family, they contacted Resilite Sports Products, the world‰¥ús largest mat manufacturer.
‰¥þWe were more than happy to provide a mat for such a worthy project,‰¥ÿ said Paul Gilbert, President of Resilite Sports Products. ‰¥þWe are extremely dedicated to the sport of wrestling, and as a company are excited that we were able to help these young athletes.‰¥ÿ
‰¥þWrestling teaches so many things to kids on so many different levels. Discipline, patience, confidence, goal-setting, and dedication are just a few. Our mat can provide that place within their home to develop their skills and technique as they learn and grow within the sport,‰¥ÿ said Mike Pyle, National Sales Manager.
Resilite wrestling mats are manufactured to the highest standards within the industry. Resilite provides mats to some of the top wrestling programs in the world. Each wrestling mat manufactured is put through an extensive quality process from start to finish. That is the reason why Resilite mats have been specified for world competitions to training at home for nearly 50 years.
‰¥þNot all mats are created equal,‰¥ÿ said Jeff Baker, Director of Marketing. ‰¥þPeople assume that a mat is a mat, but that‰¥ús simply not the case. ‰¥þBaker continued, ‰¥þ At Resilite, we use an electronic surface impact tester to simulate an actual fall onto a wrestling mat. This testing has helped us to develop the lightest weight and most shock-absorbent wrestling mats available.‰¥ÿ
Warren Tischler, a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, founded Resilite in 1959. His personal wrestling experience at the University of Pennsylvania, lead him to develop a high-quality, vinyl-coated wrestling mat to provide the most protection possible in an athletic mat. ‰¥þWe at Resilite are committed to the safety of our athletes and the importance of impact protection‰¥ÿ, said Gilbert. ‰¥þKeeping our athletes protected is our top priority.‰¥ÿ

Kerry McCoy- Stanford Cardinal Head Coach- a two-time Olympian, four-time World Cup Champion and three-time NCAA All-American, Penn State 1997
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford head coach <http://gostanford.collegesports.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/mccoy_kerry00.html>Kerry McCoy, who helped sophomore <http://gostanford.collegesports.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/gardner_tanner00.html>Tanner Gardner to All-America honors this past year, announced the Cardinal's 2006-07 schedule today. McCoy will begin his second season on The Farm next fall as he prepares the 2006-07 Cardinal squad for one of the most challenging schedules in program history.
Stanford ended the 2005-06 season with a 8-7 record in dual matches and a seventh-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships. Next season, the Cardinal will wrestle in 18 duals and will travel to the most competitive tournaments in the country as Stanford prepares to vie for the conference title and earn multiple bids to the NCAA Championships.
Stanford will begin its quest for the 2007 Pac-10 Championship with a challenging regular season schedule that includes four teams who finished last season ranked in the top-25. Stanford will face off against all nine Pac-10 opponents this season, helping the Cardinal prepare for the conference tournament, which will be held in Bakersfield next March.
The Cardinal will jump right into its competitive schedule just one week after the intrasquad meet. Stanford will begin the season with wrestle-offs on Sat., Oct. 28 at noon, setting the stage for the first competition at the Avalon Duals in Edinboro, Pa., on Sunday, Nov. 4. The Cardinal is slated to take on Mercyhurst, Maryland and Edinboro - who ended the 2006 campaign with a No. 16 ranking.
The Cardinal will then travel to Fargo, N.D. on Nov. 11 for the Bison Open before returning to the West for its first Pac-10 competition at Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 17, followed by the Cal Open on Sat., Nov. 18. The next weekend, Stanford will head to Fresno for the first-ever California Dual Meet Championship, where the lineup is yet to be determined.
In December, Stanford will return to the Las Vegas Invitational and the Reno Tournament of Champions before making its first trip to Greensboro, N.C. for the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30.

Rich Bender-USA Wrestling will join us LIVE from the Jr. Nationals. Rich will join us to talk about Team USA and what we can expect from world competition in the near future.
Note to National Wrestling Media
Due to the sometimes ungodly length of my Email News releases (and Lehigh's release of its story just before John Clark was firmed up), I'd like to remind all media outlets that Lehigh has 2 new full-time assistants (Jon Trenge & Tim Dernlan) plus a 3rd assistant on his way, arriving in time to begin on Sept. 1, after fulfilling six weeks of job commitments.
Speaking for the Board of Directors of the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club (which retained Kerry McCoy for 5 yrs and Trenge last year), we're really thrilled to add the healthy & athletic Buckeye standout, John Clark, with a career penchant for scoring points. This gives Lehigh great weight class balance among new workout partners (125, 165, 197) -- the best ever for a Strobel staff (supplanting the 2004-05 staff of Kutz-125; Ayres-157; McCoy-264). While Greg can still demonstrate very well on the mat, he is not considered a 'training partner.'
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New Lehigh Volunteer Coach (Head Coach, LVAC): JOHN CLARK - Ohio St '04
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buckeye NCAA 5th & 6th at 165 lbs in '03, '04; also a Big Ten 2, 2, 3, 6.
Clark finished 4th in Ohio State career wins with 134, ranks 3rd all-time in takedowns (486) & also 3rd in total team points scored over four years (430).
A 2-time NY state champ out of Canton, NY, John spent a year in sales for Sterling Paper, then was named to Kerry McCoy's Stanford staff last summer. He also performed well as Director of Stanford's student intramural program before deciding to move back East for '06-07 (he'll begin on Sept. 1).
John's older brother, Mitch (Ohio State NCAA 1st, 2nd at 177) is now on Cornell's staff, while younger brother Charlie (National Prep Champ for Blair Academy) will be an Ohio State junior.
John was seeded 8th, 6th and 10th at Nationals and owned five wins (in 4 NCAAs) vs. All-Americans, including two vs. CMU's David Bolyard. All nine of John's NCAA defeats came vs. A/As, including 5 vs. finalists (Tyrone Lewis-2, Troy Letters, Robbie Waller, Carl Fronhofer); the only loss to a non-top 4 A/A was to Lehigh's Chris Vitale, 11-9.

Reminder - Voting for ESPY Nominee Anthony Robles Ends Midnight, Sunday, July 9
Online voting for the 2006 ESPY Award nominees will conclude at midnight on Sunday, July 9. High school national champion wrestler Anthony Robles of Mesa, Ariz. has been nominated for a 2006 ESPY Award for "Best Male Athlete With A Disability." Robles' nomination marks the sixth consecutive year that a wrestler has been nominated for an ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) Award.
Nominees are selected by a panel of ESPN staff and esteemed journalists. To vote for Robles, visit <http://www.espys.tv/>www.espys.tv, click on "Vote Now" and then click on the "Best Male Athlete With A Disability" category and select Robles.
Winners are determined solely by online voting.
"This is an incredible honor," Robles said of his nomination. "Not only have so many great wrestlers been nominated for these awards before, but so many great athletes are nominated every year. The ESPY Awards are for the best of the best, and for them to include me in that category with athletes that I see as an inspiration is just an amazing feeling for me."
"So many people have helped me to be successful in all areas of my life, including in wrestling. My family, friends, coaches and teammates have all been supportive of me and my career and without them by my side every day, this nomination may not have been possible," Robles added.
Also nominated in the "Best Male Athlete With A Disability" category are high school football player Bobby Martin, who was born with a condition called "congenital amputation" which left him with no legs and nordic skier Steve Cook, who won three medals at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games.
Last year, a record three wrestlers were nominated for ESPY Awards. Cael Sanderson was nominated for "Best Male Olympic Performance," Rulon Gardner was nominated for "Best Comeback" and Steve Mocco was nominated for "Best Male College Athlete."
Born with just one leg, 17 year-old Robles capped off an amazing career on March 26 by winning the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) national title at 112 lbs. with a 9-1 victory in the finals in Pittsburgh, Pa. The NHSCA invites only seniors in high school who won state titles to its national meet. Robles became the first disabled wrestler to win a title at the NHSCA national championships.
As a junior, Robles placed second in the NHSCA national championships for juniors.
The win also finished off a perfect 53-0 senior season for him. For his four-year career, Robles posted a record of 131-15 and won two Arizona high school state titles for Mesa High School. He was also undefeated as a junior. Amazingly, Anthony never wrestled until his family moved from just outside of Los Angeles to Mesa before his freshman year.
"I think God gave me a gift by only giving me one leg," Robles said after winning his national title. "Other people may not see it that way, but I do."
His high school coach, Bob Williams, calls him "the most inspirational athlete I've ever seen."
Last weekend, Robles signed a National Letter of Intent to wrestle at Arizona State Univ., a college wrestling powerhouse, where he plans to study Business. In high school, he posted a 3.5 GPA. He aspires to someday become a sports agent and also compete in mixed martial arts.åÊ
The ESPY Awards, created by ESPN in 1993, will be held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif. on July 12. The show will be televised by ESPN on Sunday, July 16.
Past wrestling ESPY winners include Kyle Maynard in 2004 for "Best Athlete with a Disability," Cael Sanderson in 2002 for "Best Male College Athlete" and Rulon Gardner in 2001 for "Male USA Olympic Athlete." In 2003, Eric Larkin, also an Arizona State wrestler, was nominated for "Best Male College Athlete."

His coach, Bob Williams, calls him "the most inspirational athlete I've ever seen."
This past weekend, Anthony signed a National Letter of Intent to wrestle at Arizona State Univ., a college wrestling powerhouse, where he plans to study Business. In high school, he posted a 3.5 GPA. He also hopes to one day compete in mixed martial arts competition.
Fresno State/California Needs Your Help...Program Dropped
CALL TO ACTION
"A Line in the Sand Has Been Drawn."
As you may have already heard, Tom Boeh, the A.D. at Fresno State
University made the decision to drop the wrestling program...No
WARNING at all. Fresno "Central Valley" is the hotbed
of California wrestling and has had a very rich tradition. The
loss of this program would impact wrestling in California significantly.
To help with the process of fighting this issue, and re-instating
the program, can you post or pass along the following information?
Email the following personnel:
John Wetly, President of FSU
<mailto:johnw@csufresno.edu>johnw@csufresno.edu
Tom Boeh, Athletic Director
Ph. 559-278-3178
<mailto:tboeh@csufresno.edu>tboeh@csufresno.edu
In addition to sending e-mails, please join the California wrestling
community in the first of several demonstrations to re-instate
Fresno State Wrestling. The following information is from the
Californiawrestler.com:
The first demonstration will be at the home of A.D.
Tom Boeh, 9436 Saybrook Drive, Fresno 93720.
His house is located just southwest of Champlain and
Perrin in Woodward Park area.
Send this to other coaches, family and friends of
wrestling. We need big numbers out there to make a
statement and an impact.
If you truly care about getting the wrestling program
reinstated, then you will be there! Al Fontes supports
this! Selma Wrestling supports this, as does McLane
Wrestling. I know the wrestling community is very
angry and upset. Well, it's time for our voices to be
heard!
There is power in numbers! Be a part of the solution!
Make poster board size signs expressing your concerns.
Mr. Archie Tover Sr. and I are working on contacting
the media. If any of you have "connections", then use
them to help get the media coverage that this issue
deserves!
It's time to rally the troops!

Asics East Coast National Beach Wrestling ChampionshipsIrvine, CA (June 5, 2006) ASICS America Corporation is
proud to once again announce its sponsorship of the world's newest
sport: Beach Wrestling. This year's event will be contested over
two days, Saturday August 12th and Sunday August 13th in Long
Beach, NY. Last year's inaugural event attracted 212 participants
from 11 states, and was hosted by the Metropolitan Wrestling Association
(MWA). It was held just off an elevated 2 mile long boardwalk,
with the surf beaches of the Atlantic Ocean in the background.
Local, regional and national attention was generated through media
outlets including Fox 5 Good Day (New York) TV show, USA Today,
Newsday, WINS radio, and the College Sports Television Network
(CSTV). LiveSportsVideo.com provided Internet production worldwide.
The competition will be sanctioned by USA Wrestling, the National
Governing Body of wrestling in the United States, who will also
be hosting the USA National Beach Wrestling Championships in Palm
Beach, FL on August 19th. FILA, the worldwide governing body for
wrestling, will premier the first ever World Beach Wrestling Championships
in Turkey this October.
The ASICS East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships will
be held where thousands of people go to relax, exercise and enjoy
a beautiful environment. Last year's event attracted over 12,000
spectators, while enhancing the general public's interest in,
understanding of, and appreciation for amateur wrestling.
Revenues generated from this competition will be donated to the
Metropolitan Wrestling Association's (MWA) Beat The Street's program,
and an ASICS equipment donation will be made to the Long Beach
Recreation Department's wrestling club to help outfit their members.
The MWA's goal is to establish folkstyle wrestling in 100 middle
schools and 100 high schools in New York City by the year 2010,
and has to date raised over one million dollars of the $3.5 million
needed to meet the ambitious goals of the organization. There
are currently 25 high schools with wrestling in NYC.
"The City of Long Beach is very pleased to be hosting the
ASICS East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships",
said Commissioner of Parks & Recreation, Joe Brand. "Last
year's inaugural one-day competition was a huge success and we
are all hoping that this year's two day event will attract an
even greater response. Word has definitely spread around the wrestling
community that the event was competitive, and professionally run.
Not only do the wrestlers have a great time, but the spectators
get to spend the day at our beautiful beaches, soaking up the
sun, enjoying the ocean, and watching skilled wrestlers compete
for the crown."
The event will have 6 divisions: middle school, high school, college,
veterans, girls and women.

UFC
Will Host One-legged National Champion Wrestler at UFC 60 this
WeekendUltimate Fighting Championships (UFC) will host Anthony Robles,
a national champion wrestler born with just one leg, at their
UFC 60 event at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. on Saturday,
May 27. During the event, Anthony will be honored by the UFC for
his amazing accomplishments.
The UFC brings together the some of the top mixed martial arts
competitors in a world to compete in a controlled environment.
Many of the top UFC stars are former elite-level wrestlers, including
Randy Couture, Matt Lindland, Tito Ortiz and Matt Hughes, who
will fight in the UFC 60's feature bout.
Born with just one leg, 17 year-old Anthony Robles
of Mesa, Ariz. capped off an amazing career on March
26 by winning the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA)
national title at 112 lbs. with a 9-1 victory in the finals. The
NHSCA invites only seniors in high school who won state titles
to its national meet. Robles became the first disabled wrestler
to win a title at the NHSCA national championships.
The win also finished off a perfect 53-0 senior season for him.
For his four-year career, he posted a record of 131-15 and won
two Arizona state titles. He was also undefeated as a junior.
Amazingly, Anthony never wrestled until his family moved from
just outside of Los Angeles to Mesa before his freshman year.
He aspires to someday compete in mixed martial arts after he completes
his collegiate wrestling career at Arizona State Univ., where
he will study Business.
Recently, Anthony has been featured on ESPN's Cold Pizza,
CNN, Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends and this week
will be featured on ABC World News Tonight as their Person of
the Week. He is expected to be nominated for a 2006 ESPY Award
for Best Disabled Athlete.

"Call" to the Wrestling Family to the 2006 FCA Couples
Retreat Featuring Nate Carr
Greetings to the wrestling breakfast prayer team!
Something to pray for and personally consider.........
FCA's Midwest Couples Retreat featuring Hall of Famer Nate
Carr and his
wife Linda ...July 21-23 at Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena, Il
God has really laid it on my heart to "call" the
wrestling family from
across the nation to this event to have their marriages blessed...to
work
on balance between work and family....not at just any Christian
couples
retreat, but one with a wrestling "preacher/coach"!
Please pray that the word of this special event would reach
the hearts of
every member of our "family"....pray about whether you
are to attend or
maybe invite another coupole to attenc with you....if you have
a name of a
coach you want me to personally contact and invite, give me the
inforamtion
and I will do it!
For coaches I do not want finances to be an obstacle, so I
am committed to
providing financial assistance to those that need it to attend.....ask
me
about special wrestling coaches scholarships.
I will raise what ever is needed.
If you have inroads with wrestling publications and /or websites
and can
get the word out that way it would be greatly appreciated. Go
to
www.illinoisfca.org and click on couples retreat for the brochure.
Since
the printing we have added Dennis Swanberg "America's Minister
Of
Encouragement" (dennisswanberg.com) to the program...believe
me, we are
going to LAUGH and WRESTLE and grow in our understanding of VICTORY
in
MARRIAGE as we spend time with Nate, Linda , and Dennis throughout
the
week-end.
E-mail me or call me anytime on my cell 217-841-3199. Again
let me know if
there are others you want me to contact.
We are working together to win...for Him!
Tim
PS To find out more about the retreat location, check out

In fact, I'm thinking I need to develop a plan to let every
wrestling coach
in the Midwest know of this rare opportunity to retreat and work
on the
balance between coaching and marriage ...not at just any Christian
couples
retreat, but one with a wrestling preacher/coach!
...God has really laid it on my heart to "call" the
wrestling coaches
from across the nation to this event to have their marriages blessed.
I am
committed to not letting finances be an obstacle.

ATTENTION COACHES - TEAM CAMP
While traditional team camps provide for only one or two matches
daily, Gold Medal Team Camp offers every member of your team an
entire daily session dedicated to live wrestling, intense drilling,
and serious training. Instead of wrestling a short match and then
sitting around for the duration of the session like most team
camps, Gold Medal Team Camp provides each wrestler continuous
wrestling with multiple quality partners. By forgoing the typical

Lost One of its Greatest Leaders with the Passing of John T. Vaughan
Wrestling lost one of its greatest leaders on April 29 with the passing of John T. Vaughan, 91, in Tampa, Fla. Vaughan, a supporter of amateur wrestling and a pioneer in metal-heating technology, died from complications resulting from a stroke, his wife Helen said.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday May 6 in Tampa, with a memorial service to be held in Cleveland, Ohio at the Vaughan Hall of Fame in the Veale Convocation Center at Case Western Reserve University.
Vaughan was one of the founders of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, serving as president and chairman of the Board of Governors. He was inducted as a Distinguished Member, the Hall's highest and most coveted honor, in 1992.
"John Vaughn was one of the greatest leaders the sport of wrestling in the United States has ever had," said Jim Keen, Sr., Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. "He was a tremendous force for advocating and financially supporting the mission of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum and the sport's national governing body, USA Wrestling."
He led the capital campaign that enlarged the Hall of Fame, improved the museum and established an endowment. The new wing added as a result was named the John Vaughan Hall of Honors.
"As difficult as it was for John and his wife Helen to travel the past few years, he actively attended and participated in our board meetings, banquet and induction ceremony," Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum said. "On behalf of our Board of Governors, I want to extend our heartfelt sympathy to Helen and the entire Vaughan family for the loss of this great man. We intend to prepare a memorial display in the John T. Vaughn Hall of Honors that will celebrate his enormous impact on the sport during his lifetime."
Vaughan also helped to create USA Wresting when it was the National Wrestling Federation and was instrumental in helping it to become the national governing body for the sport of wrestling in the United States. He served on the USA Wrestling Board of Directors for many years and was active on many of its committees. Internationally, he was a member of the marketing commission of the International Wrestling Federation, FILA.
In addition to leadership, he was an ardent financial supporter of wrestling on every level, from sponsoring the Greco-Roman National Team to supporting several collegiate teams, to sponsoring wrestling tournaments. The largest youth wrestling tournament in the world, held each summer in Fargo, N.D., was recently renamed in his honor as the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet and Junior National Championships.
"We will deeply miss his friendship, his optimism and his leadership for the sport he so passionately loved," Smith said. "Yet we wish to celebrate the great life he lived and the example he provided as a leader and ambassador for the sport of wrestling."
Born in 1914, Vaughan's love affair with wrestling began early in life. During the 1930's, he competed for the then Case Institute in Cleveland, Ohio for three seasons--two of them undefeated--and continued to wrestle for a YMCA team until World War II.
After graduating from Case in 1937 with a degree in electrical engineering, he turned his knowledge and experience to the development of induction heating, a revolutionary method of hardening metals through electricity. Vaughan worked for Tocco, the research and development arm of the Ohio Crankshaft Company, and during the war, was part of the team that hardened the nose of the armor-piercing bullet that finally penetrated the steel plates of the indomitable Panzer tank. After the war, as induction heating came into general use in industry, Vaughan contributed many technical papers and secured over 10 patents.
In 1952, he formed his own company to manufacture restaurant equipment and transformers for induction heating processes and in 1958 moved the company from Cleveland to Tampa.
In 1964, partnering with Case classmate Tinkham Veale II, Vaughan founded one of the first public conglomerates, the Alco Standard Corporation, organized on the principle of pooling capital and services to strengthen small businesses. By 1982, Alco Standard incorporated 126 partner companies in eleven countries employing 16,700 workers in manufacturing, service, and distribution.
In addition to his wife Helen of Lutz, Florida, Vaughan is survived by a brother, Daniel Vaughan of Chatham, MA, three children, Mary Kay Vaughan of Washington D.C., Nancy Miholland of Port Townsend, Washington, Byron Vaughan of Land o Lakes, Florida, two step children, Doreen Lavelle of Herndon , Virginia, and John Ferlita of Land 0 Lakes, Florida, and five grandchildren.

high school wrestling rules changes as approved by the National
Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)
Overtime Procedure, 275-Pound Weight Class Changed
in High School Wrestling
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 10, 2006) - A change in the overtime
procedure and an increase of 10 pounds in the 275-pound weight
class are
among the revisions in high school wrestling rules for the 2006-07
season.
A total of 14 rules revisions were approved by the National
Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling
Rules
Committee at its March 26-27 meeting in Indianapolis. The rules
changes
were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
After successful experimentation in several states last year,
a
potential of one additional minute was added to the overtime period.
Beginning next season, if no score occurs in the sudden-victory
period,
two 30-second tiebreakers will take place. Scoring in these two
tiebreakers will be conducted as in a regular match. If the score
remains tied at the conclusion of the two tiebreakers, one additional
30-second period will be conducted, with the first person scoring
declared the winner. If no points are scored, the offensive wrestler
wins the match.
Previously, only one 30-second tiebreaker was conducted after
the one-minute overtime period. The new rule provides for one
additional
30-second tiebreaker and another 30-second period if the score
remains
tied after the tiebreakers.
For the first time since 1987, the limit on the heavyweight
class was increased from 275 to 285 pounds. Jerry Diehl, assistant
director of the NFHS and rules committee liaison, said student-athletes
are bigger than they were when the limit of 275 pounds was established
19 years ago. He said the committee made the change to encourage
additional high school athletes to compete in wrestling.
Dave Gannaway, assistant executive director of the Illinois
High
School Association and chair of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee,
noted that the additional 10 pounds will provide larger athletes,
particularly football players, an increased opportunity to wrestle.
In other rules revisions, the committee altered Rule 6-6
regarding the correction of errors. Beginning next season, any
error
(other than bad time and positioning) must be corrected prior
to the
start of the next period. For the correction to be made during
the last
period, it must be corrected prior to the wrestler/coach leaving
the mat
area. Previously, changes could be made after the match or within
30
minutes of the completion of a dual meet.
"Coaches and their scorekeepers have the responsibility
to
recognize scoring errors as they occur," Diehl said. "It
is unfair to
attempt a reconstruction of what transpired in a previous period,
if it
is questioned in the subsequent period."
The definition of when a match begins was revised in Rule
5-18-2. Beginning next season, a match (in dual matches) begins
when the
proper wrestler reports to the scorer's table. Previously, by
definition, a match started with the action of the first period.
Diehl
said the committee made this change to support the current
interpretation of penalizing a wrestler who reports to compete
and is
improperly equipped.
Following is a summary of other changes approved for high school
wrestling next year:
* Head coaches and captains are required to meet with the
referee prior to each dual meet.
* Technical violations and potentially dangerous holds
added to the list of items that must be verbally
communicated to the referee when an assistant referee system is
used.
* When the referee and assistant referee meet to confer,
they shall meet away from the scorer's table. (previously was
in front of table)
* Restriction for garment extending below the singlet was
modified.
* Decision on when to award additional near-fall points
for acts by the defensive wrestler has been clarified.
* A wrestler who properly reports to the scorer's table
for a dual match cannot be withdrawn or replaced without
causing the individual to be disqualified and the weight
class forfeited.
* Penalty for pulling back the fingers clarified to state
the act of grasping is not an automatic violation.
* Hand(s) to the face and/or raking the eyes added to the
list of illegal holds.
* The term "fleeing" has been added to Rule 7-3-2.
* An exception was added to note that a match will not be
stopped to penalize the offensive wrestler for stalling when the
defensive wrestler has come to the standing position.
These 14 rules revisions will take effect next season, along
with the landmark weight-management guidelines approved last year
by the
committee for implementation in 2006-07. These guidelines were
approved
in an effort to discourage rapid-weight loss by student-athletes.
In addition, the following points of emphasis were developed
by
the Wrestling Rules Committee for the 2006-07 season: dealing
with
apparent concussions, unnecessary roughness and slams, weigh-in
procedures, uniform requirements, and socks and use of other special
equipment.
Wrestling is the sixth-most popular sport for boys at the high
school level, with 243,009 participants during the 2004-05 season,
according to the High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted
by
the NFHS. It ranks eighth in school sponsorship with 9,562 high
schools
nationwide conducting the sport. In addition, a total of 4,334
girls
participated in high school wrestling in 2004-05.

Henson vs. Mena on Real Pro Wrestling
Real Pro Wrestling will continue its historic launch of matches for free on iTunes with the release of the 121-pound Season 1 semifinal match between Sammie "The Bull" Henson of the Pennsylvania Hammer and Mike Mena of the Iowa Stalkers.
This is the 5th match overall posted for free on iTunes, giving sporting fans around the globe an opportunity to view these historic bouts.
This match is not only a clash of styles, but also a clash
of personalities. The 1998 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver
medalist returned to the mats in 2004, and has continued to drive
back towards the top spot in the country. Henson is loud, crude
and obnoxious on and off the mat. Never one to hold back his words,
Henson has also never been to known to hold back on his aggression
on the mat. Mena is quiet and reserved off the mat, but turns
into a silent assassin on the mat. In the last few years, he has
bolted to the top of the U.S. ladder and will look to get closer
with a win over Henson.

NETWORKS CO-FOUNDER CHRIS BEVILACQUA
TO LEAD NEW CSTV REGIONAL NETWORKS VENTURE
NEW YORK, January 23, 2006 - Chris Bevilacqua, co-founder of CSTV Networks will take over the reins of the company's new regional networks division as the President of CSTV Regional Networks, it was announced today by CSTV CEO and President Brian Bedol.
Recently acquired by CBS Corporation, CSTV Networks is the leading digital and cable programming company dedicated to college sports. Plans were announced last year for a 2006 launch of a network dedicated to the Mountain West Conference, when the conference transfers all media rights to CSTV. The company also has plans to develop other regional properties.
"One of our strongest assets is the solid relationship and great support we have with schools and conferences, and Chris has been at the forefront of developing these partnerships," said Bedol. "I know quite well how challenging it is to grow a network, and launching a new one takes a unique level of creativity, focus and energy. I'm happy that Chris has agreed to take on this role, the critical next step in our company's evolution."
Bevilacqua will continue to lead future rights negotiations for CSTV and CSTV Online. CSTV currently holds comprehensive rights to Conference USA, including football and men's basketball, and is set to announce a variety of partnerships with leagues and conferences that range from comprehensive media and marketing rights to specially designed broadband and new media offerings.
"CSTV is committed to creating opportunities for our conference partners that maximize their revenue, visibility and exposure as well as their ability to connect with fans, alumni and families across the country," said Bevilacqua, a former NCAA All-American wrestler and team captain for Penn State who captured a gold medal at the 1983 World Espoir Wrestling Championships. "We are interested in continuing to create new models that best serve the needs of our partners."
Prior to co-founding CSTV with Bedol, Bevilacqua served as director, global negotiations and league affairs at Nike, Inc., negotiating sponsorship, television and licensing partnerships with professional leagues and governing bodies, NCAA schools and individual athletes. Prior to Nike, Bevilacqua served as director, corporate sponsorships for The Baseball Network (TBN), a joint venture between Major League Baseball (MLB) and the NBC and ABC television networks. Earlier, he was manager of sports programming for NBC Sports. As an independent associate producer, he was honored with an Emmy Award for his work at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.
CSTV Networks, Inc., now part of CBS Corporation, connects
more fans to more college sports than any other company. Its many
platforms for programming distribution include CSTV:College Sports
TV, televising regular-season and championship events for 35 men's
and women's college sports; CSTV.com and its network of nearly
250 official athletic sites; CSTV All Access, broadband services
providing live audio and video of more than 7,000 events annually;
as well as satellite television and radio, in-flight entertainment,
wireless networks and more. CSTV was acquired by CBS in January

ASICS
and Brute Wrestling support the Beat the Streets program in New
York with grants to benefit young wrestlers
Metropolitan Wrestling Association
01/12/2006
The USA Wrestling/Metropolitan Wrestling Association (MWA) "Beat the Streets Program" has received grants from ASICS and Brute Wrestling to outfit 20 teams with wrestling shoes, head guards and shorts. Each boy and girl in the program will be provided the equipment as part of the enrollment in the program.
The donations save the MWA over $30,000 and allows the organization to invest money towards adding more Middle School wrestling teams to next year's program.
ASICS is a USA Wrestling national sponsor, and has been providing donations and grants to amateur wrestling since 1958. ASICS has consistently supported amateur wrestling throughout the world. ASICS was named as a sponsor of FILA, the international wrestling federation, during ceremonies at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Brute Wrestling has been a strong supporter of wrestling programs within the United States at all levels for decades. Brute Wrestling has provided significant support to the Beat the Streets program as part of its investment in the sport.
"Without the corporate help of ASICS, Brute Wrestling and Dollamur, the growth rate for wrestling in New York City would not have expanded from one middle school in 2005 to 20 middle schools in 2006, said Al Bevilacqua, Chairman of the Beat the Streets Program. "We have raised over a quarter of a million dollars from many private donors who have committed helping us build the base of wrestling in the United States. We will continue to do so until we are successful in meeting that goal. These sponsors share in our vision of growing the base of wrestling in the United States. We have approximately 600,000 wrestlers in the United States now. We could double that in 10 years through a National Beat the Streets effort. "
About the Beat the Streets Program
Our goal is very simple in New York City. We want to invest in providing a wrestling mat, coaching stipends and equipment for the 275 middle schools in the New York City public schools. Our first program at the Baruch Middle school in lower Manhattan, had 26 boys and girls. This season, they have 53 kids. We will have well over 400 kids in the program by the end of March. Every time we place a mat in a middle school, 30 kids will join. The more mats, the more kids. We simply sell $10,000 sponsorship programs that will "kick back" millions of dollars to wrestling in 10 years.
In addition, we are helping hundreds of thousands kids beat the streets. This program is not just growing wrestling but giving kids a chance to participate in a great activity that is "magic" for all kids.

I
am writing to offer my award winning wrestling film to you to
screen at wrestling tournaments you may host.
A few years ago I switched from coaching wrestling at Schurr High (alongside Wrestling Hall of Fame member Joe Gonzo, Gonzales) to South El Monte High from 1999-2002. After the spring semester of 2002 I decided to switch careers overall. I am now an independent filmmaker fulltime. I recently made a film that has impacted the film community and seems to be impacting the wrestling community as well. The film is titled UnderDOG.
"UnderDog" is a comedy about a young boy who is the worst wrestler on his team. Struggling with the desire to be accepted by his teammates, our hero learns that feeling like a winner can happen even when you lose. Dan Gable said to me "You should be awarded for the things you do to represent out sport in Hollywood." It was an honor to meet Gable and to receive such a warm remark from him. I believe I am lucky to have made an impact by connecting two things that I love so much, wrestling and film.
For the past three years I had to start from scratch and develop a new resume as a filmmaker. I produced many projects in a variety of genres but UnderDOG is very special to me. The film has won many awards and has been shown in film festivals all over the world. Although the film had great success in the film festival circuit I believe that the true audience for this film is the wrestling community.
In an attempt to reach out to the wrestling community I am inviting wrestlers across the country to view the ten minute film online for free. I am also interested in reaching out to wrestling tournament directors and hope they will consider screening the film before the Championship Finals at various wrestling tournaments all over the country, including the state championships.
The film recently screened before the championship finals of the West Coast Classic in December 2005. The audience of over 400 wrestlers really enjoyed the film as they could all relate to the characters struggle. Viewers even identified many southern California wrestlers featured in the film. Shot on location at Northview High School, the film features many state and nationally ranked wrestlers such as Chad and Corey Beason of Temecula Valley, Nick Leon, Caleb Flores, Larry "Boy Medina of Northview, Jacob Hyland of Fountain Valley, Raul Peraza of South El Monte, Mike and Tim Suehiro of Schurr, and others. This project was made by wrestlers for the wrestling community. Please help us share this experience. It's only a ten minute film but it leaves an impact on the audience. I believe it will enhance the overall tournament experience as it did at the West Coast Classic in Rosemead, California.

P.S.
Many people don,t know this but I started my career in film in
1989. When I was wrestling at Rio Hondo Community College in southern
California my coach received a phone call from Hollywood because
they were looking for wrestlers for a Walt Disney movie titled
Spooner. The film starred Robert Urich and Jane Karmerik. I auditioned
and got the part of Tim Braden, "the lightweight wrestler
with a heavyweight heart. The film aired on national television
and on the Walt Disney Channel in the early 1990,s. Since then
I went on to become a teacher and wrestling coach. But always
kept a foot in the film industry as an actor and filmmaker overall.
With my recent career change I have been successful in establishing
myself as the "go to guy for scenes that require amateur
wrestling. I have written, directed, coordinated stunts and produced
projects for companies like Nike, Adidas, Motrin Medication, SBC
Global and others. I am now slated to produce a few feature films
about our sport! Look out for my emails, as I would like to incorporate
the wrestling community on these projects. During the production
of UnderDOG I was able to cast many southern California wrestlers.
This was very special to me because now I was in a position to
introduce wrestlers to the film community just as I was introduced
back in 1989.

National
Wrestling Hall of Fame announces the Class of 2006 Distinguished
Members; Brands, Henson, Saunders, Smith to be inducted
in the 30th anniversary class; The first woman will be inducted,
along with three brothers of Distinguished Members
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum has announced the selection of the Class of 2006 Distinguished Members to be inducted at its annual Honors Weekend Banquet and Induction Ceremony June 3, 2006 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The event will mark the 30th anniversary Class of the Hall of Fame & Museum.
Four wrestling greats will be added as Distinguished Members in 2006. They are:
· Terry Brands of
Colorado Springs, Colo.
· Josiah Henson of
Tulsa, Okla.
· Tricia Saunders of
Phoenix, Ariz.
· Pat Smith of Stillwater,
Okla.
This historic group of inductees includes the first woman chosen as a Distinguished Member. In addition, all three of the other inductees are brothers of wrestling greats who have already been inducted as Distinguished Members.
Included is the first four-time NCAA Div. I champion in wrestling history (Smith), a four-time World champion and wrestling pioneer (Saunders), a two-time World champion and Olympic medalist (Brands) and an Olympic medalist and Olympic referee (Henson).
The Hall of Fame's Board of Governors approved these selections at its semi-annual meeting held in Las Vegas on December 1, 2005.
"I want to thank our Board of Governors and the various screening and selection committees involved in the six-month process that determines our honorees for induction. This is another exceptional class of inductees whose merits transcend our sport," said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum.
Brands will join twin brother Tom Brands as a Distinguished Member. He was a World champion in freestyle wrestling in 1993 and 1995, and captured an Olympic bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Brands won World Cup and Pan American Games titles. He was a three-time finalist and two-time NCAA champion for the Univ. of Iowa. Brands currently works as USA Wrestling's National Freestyle Resident Coach.
Henson's older brother Stanley Henson is a Distinguished Member. Henson won a bronze medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. He went on to be a respected international wrestling official, becoming the first American to officiate at the Olympics in the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia. Henson was a long-time leader in U.S. wrestling and the Olympic movement. He was an undefeated wrestler and two-time EIWA champion for the U.S. Naval Academy.
Saunders becomes the first woman inducted as a Distinguished Member. She won four World gold medals and a World silver medal in women's freestyle wrestling, and completed her freestyle wrestling career without ever having lost to an American opponent. Saunders was the first U.S. wrestler to win a World gold medal in women's wrestling. She also served as the coach of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team in women's wrestling, the first time that the sport was in the Olympic Games. Saunders is considered a pioneer in the development of women's wrestling.
Smith will join his older brother, John Smith, as a Distinguished Member. He became the first wrestler in history to win four NCAA Div. I national titles, competing for Oklahoma State Univ. He won his historic fourth NCAA title at the 1994 NCAA Championships held in Chapel Hill, N.C. Smith was a member of two Oklahoma State teams that won NCAA team titles. Along with brothers Lee Roy and John, the Smiths became the first set of three brothers to claim NCAA titles. He won four conference titles, and holds the Oklahoma State record for consecutive matches without a loss. Smith placed second in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials behind three-time Olympian Kenny Monday. He serves on the coaching staff at Oklahoma State, which has won three straight NCAA team titles.
Complete biographies of the inductees will be posted each day this week on TheMat.com (www.themat.com), with Brands on Tuesday, Henson on Wednesday, Saunders on Thursday and Smith on Friday.
Additional honorees will be selected and announced in January in the categories of Outstanding American, Order of Merit, Medal of Courage, and Outstanding Official.

It was announced today by Pete Derzis, senior vice president, ESPN Regional Television. The Wrestling Invitational will bring together two nationally prominent wrestling programs, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, to host the doubleheader event. The matches will be televised live on ESPNU starting at 1 p.m. ET.
"We are excited to showcase several of the nation's top wrestling programs in Oklahoma City," Derzis said. "We are hoping to establish a top-notch event that will give wrestling an opportunity to grow within the community and on ESPNU."
"The ESPNU Double Sport Wrestling Invitational has the promise to become one of the leading annual events in this sport," said Burke Magnus, vice president and general manager, ESPNU. "We are thrilled to present the best in college wrestling to college sports fans across the nation."
At 1 p.m., the Oklahoma Sooners will meet the Pride of Hofstra, followed by a match-up between 2005 NCAA National Wrestling Champion Oklahoma State and the nationally ranked Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The ESPNU Double Sport Wrestling Invitational will commence the wrestling season at Ford Center, which will also host the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships a month later with coverage on ESPN and ESPNU.
"It is exciting that wrestling is getting some national recognition," said Oklahoma State Coach John Smith. "There is no question that we appreciate ESPN for taking an interest in a very strong sport in a good area for wrestling."
"This is going to be an exciting event for wrestling, because two of the nation's best teams will be com-peting side-by-side," said Oklahoma Coach Jack Spates. "This is also an honor for Oklahoma wrestling to be competing against an outstanding opponent in Hofstra. This will be an outstanding challenge to our wrestlers and we know we need to come prepared."
"We're elated to be a part of the ESPNU Double Sport Wrestling Invitational," said Minnesota Coach J Robinson. "It should be a great event for the fans, as well as our student-athletes. It's important for all of us in the sport to work together to make sure that collegiate wrestling continues to grow. We're grateful that ESPNU and Double Sport are committed to putting together a world-class event."
"We are excited about participating in the ESPNU Double Sport Wrestling Invitational in February," said Hofstra Coach Tom Ryan. "I am sure it is going to be a great day of college wrestling with four exciting and dynamic programs. In addition, it will be a good experience for our team to get a preview of the National Championships at the Ford Center in front of the great wrestling fans of the state of Oklahoma. We appreciate ESPN's and Double Sport's promotion of college wrestling."

"We are delighted to once again showcase our city as one of the premier college event locations in our region," said Tim Brassfield, executive director of the Oklahoma City All Sports Association. "Oklahoma City has a rich heritage when it comes to wrestling and we hope to help ESPNU in establishing an event that will become a traditional ritual for wrestling fans."
"Double Sport is honored to be working together with ESPN and looks forward to shining a national spotlight on collegiate wrestling," said Mario Mercado, founder and president of Double Sport. "Bringing four of the country's top programs together is a great way to display the tremendous athletes competing in NCAA Division I wrestling today."
Double Sport
Mario Mercado, a former Syracuse University and New York Athletic
Club wrestler and current wrestling coach at the Renzo Gracie
Academy, founded DOUBLE SPORT with the unique interests of wrestlers
in mind, and has already teamed with Olympic gold medalist Karem
Gaber. Together, with a team of sport fashion designers, doctors,
and coaches, Mercado has constructed top notch competition and
training gear. The Double's two-piece design offers an athletic
jersey "look" on a traditional uniform by offering contemporary
styles so that athletes and schools can customize their Double
with colors, names, logos, and jersey numbers. Using a more contemporary
design, The Double is poised to launch the sport of wrestling
into the mainstream, and give athletes the strongest and best
in competition and training gear. The new state-of-the-art material
blends moisture resistant and anti-germ technology into an incredibly
functional uniform.
ESPNU
ESPNU was launched in March 2005. The ESPNU schedule will
feature more than 300 live events (regular-season and championships)
in the network's first year. Action includes a variety of top
football and men's and women's basketball, mixed with baseball,
softball, volleyball, lacrosse, ice hockey, wrestling and more.
ESPNU also offers comprehensive studio programming, replays of
ABC Sports, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Regional Television games, plus
specials and more. In addition, the network has a wide-ranging,
long-term agreement with the NCAA calling for extensive coverage
of numerous NCAA Championships, including sports from each of
the three collegiate seasons.
In the 2005 Beta Research Cable Subscriber Study Interest in Emerging/Mid-sized/VOD Networks, ESPNU was ranked sixth (tied) among men 18-34 for high interest in watching each network, out of the 40 emerging/digital networks assessed. This was the first time ESPNU was evaluated by Beta Research.
ESPNU has secured distribution agreements with DIRECTV (Channel
609), Echostar's DISH Network (Channel 148), Adelphia, Insight
Communications, Mediacom, Verizon, several smaller affiliates
and is close to distribution agreements with others. The 24-hour
television network is the key component of the multi-media ESPNU
initiative that will deliver college sports content across ESPN's
family of services, such as ESPN.com, ESPN The Magazine, Mobile
ESPN, ESPN Radio, ESPN Interactive, ESPN360, merchandising and
more.
ESPN Regional Television

sports programming, producing more than 740 sporting events a
year. In addition to event ownership, ERT produces 400 events

Competing in Pool A of the tournament will be Minnesota, Central Michigan, American University, Tennessee-Chattanooga, and Virginia Tech. Competing in Pool B will be Ohio, Binghamton, Sacred Heart, Pitt-Johnstown, and Drexel. Each team will wrestle four duals against teams in their pool only. Read below for a link to the complete tournament schedule.
The Journeymen/Brute Northeast Collegiate Wrestling Duals was created to promote college wrestling and to encourage local high school wrestlers to pursue a higher level of college wrestling. There isn,t a college with a wrestling team within an 80-mile radius of Albany. Title IX withered up such programs as Syracuse (I), University of Albany (III) and Union College (III).
Frank Popolizio is the Northeast Duals tournament organizer. He is also owner of Journeymen Athletics of Niskayuna, a wrestling training facility that also helps high school wrestlers make the transition to college.
"Since collegiate wrestling has been virtually non existent in the Albany area, bringing an elite-level college wrestling tournament to this area is exciting, he said. "But more importantly it acts as a visual bridge for high school wrestlers. Our athletes need to see collegiate wrestling up close in order to aspire to do it. It's one thing to conduct camps and clinics, but it's another level to have live upper Division I wrestling happening right in your own neighborhood."
Popolizio said seeing top-level Division I wrestling for the first time was something he,ll never forget.
"I can vividly recall the first D-I collegiate wrestling match I saw in person, he said. "It had a profound impact on me and inspired me to do what I'm currently doing with Journeymen Wrestling. That match was among the most exciting sporting events I've ever seen Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma in a Bedlam match. The building was packed and the place was electrifying. There's no reason why that same feeling can't be duplicated in the Northeast. People love wrestling just the same; however, I'm not sure if anyone has taken the time and effort needed to show our community exactly what they've been missing. My goal is to reach out to fans and athletes alike and show them exactly what college wrestling is all about."
Minnesota coach J Robinson has previously talked about the importance of this event.
"I think it,s a great opportunity to bring college wrestling to the area, Robinson said. "This is another chance to promote the sport in an area that needs more college wrestling.
Robinson also liked the chance for his team to get a guaranteed number of matches against opponents they might not traditionally compete against.
"It,s also a chance for our guys to get a guaranteed four matches, said Robinson. "We,re excited to go in knowing we,ll get an opportunity to get a guaranteed number of matches, and we,re excited to help this tournament grow.
Popolizio is excited to have wrestling legends such as Robinson and Dan Gable involved in promoting the event.
"J Robinson is a great asset in our sport, says Popolizio. "J has been the quintessential marketer and promoter of our sport, so having him a part of this is extra special. Obviously J has the luxury and flexibility to compete against whoever he wants in the nation; however, for the betterment and promotion of the sport, he decided to commit to the Journeymen/BRUTE Northeast Collegiate Duals. He knows Minnesota's presence here is bigger than just another day trip."
Gable recently wrote a letter to wrestling fans, encouraging them to participate and support Saturday,s tournament.
"This event is special to the area and I need the help
of every wrestler, former wrestler, coach, and wrestling fan,
said Gable. "Often we say we "love wrestling even long
after the battles on the mat are over; however, sometimes we fall
short in showing our support. The event is strategically planned
to take place over Thanksgiving break, when many of the high schools
are not yet competing and people have time off from work. As an
ambassador of the sport, I,m asking for your help. Now is the
time to support collegiate wrestling in an area where it once
flourished and reaffirm that we want it back! No matter what age
or demographic, please be there for the Journeymen Northeast Collegiate
Wrestling Duals on November 26th!

"Pre-Season" Training Camps
It is crucial to maintain steady training even during the wrestling season. You must make the time to find new partners, new training methods and to correct in-season mistakes. Kolat "In-Season" Training Camps are specifically designed for this purpose. We offer two and three day training camps for youth and high school wrestlers which involve intense combination drilling, situational wrestling, and live wrestling.
Every athlete reaches a point during the season when their wrestling becomes stale, and this is the perfect time to change up your training. Kolat "In-Season" Training Camps are a great way to refresh, refocus, and push to a title!
In-Season camps are kept small so space is limited please get registered as soon as possible.

TEAM KOLAT ANNOUNCES PIEDMONT SURFACE TOOLING AS PRESENTING SPONSOR
Baltimore, MD, November 15, 2005-Cary Kolat has announced that Piedmont Surface Tooling, a North Carolina based company will be the new official sponsor of Team Kolat.
Piedmont specializes in diamond wheels and diamond saw blades that are used in the stone industry to cut granite and marble used for tiles, countertops, and etc. within its industry. They also specialize in diamond profile wheels for CNC machinery.
We are very excited that they have decided to come onboard and help our club team build into a nationally recognized powerhouse on the east coast. We feel that this is a mutually beneficial relationship which allows the team to promote Piedmont and their expertise within their business and allows us to recruit and add additions to our coaching staff. We want to create future state, national and hopefully world caliber wrestlers from our club and to do that it takes training. With Piedmonts generous donation, we will be able to travel and train throughout the United States giving our athletes exposure to some of the best competition in youth and high school wrestling.
Piedmont has also agreed to sponsor all our, "The Mark of Champions 2006 Summer Camps" to assist me in my quest to build the nation's best summer wrestling camps in the country. We will offer eight weeks of camp this summer with Piedmont being involved in all aspects to help the youth wrestling in the U.S. to improve to the next level.
TEAM KOLAT CLAIMS FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPION AND 3 ALL-AMERICANS AT CLIFF KEEN KICK-OFF
This is our first big event for the year and we felt like we put on a strong showing of our wrestling skills with 9 members of Team Kolat competing in this years event. Although we did not get as many All-Americans and National Champions as we would have liked it was a good start to the season.

HOW
TO BUY A PAIR OF WRESTLING SHOES - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Franklin Park, IL November 13, 2005 - WrestlingGear.Com
HOW TO BUY A PAIR OF WRESTLING SHOES - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
We will discuss several things you need to know if you are buying wrestling shoes for the first time or if it has been a while since you purchased shoes. You will find out more about Youth vs Adult sizes, Wide Width Shoes, Proper Sizing, Setting a Budget, Color Selection, and Split Sole vs Uni-sole shoes.
YOUTH SIZES VS ADULT SIZES
The market for wrestling shoes is small for youth size shoes (under a men's 5.0). Therefore the color selection and options are fairly limited until you hit around a size 5.0. For example, adidas offers 2 colors and Asics offers 4 colors to choose from. Recently adidas and Asics have made some of their top wrestling shoes at available starting at a size 4.0.
Once your wrestler reaches a size 5.0, you now have access to shoes in all sorts of colors and designs with prices ranging from about $45 to $130. We often get comments from customers that we do not offer a wide variety of youth wrestling shoes; we currently offer every youth wrestling shoe available from adidas, Asics, and Matman.
WIDE WIDTH SHOES
"Do wrestling shoes come in wide widths?" This is our most common question regarding wrestling shoes. Just as the size of the market limits your selection in youth wrestling shoes, no one offers wide width wrestling shoes. This being said, we find adidas shoes are cut wider than other manufacturers. I have a wide foot with a high in step and find adidas works well for me now. We can make this recommendation based on feedback from our customers as well.
Even though we find adidas works well with wide feet, several wrestlers swear Asics fit their wide foot the best. Keep in mind every foot is different so it is best to shop with a company like WrestlingGear.Com that offers a sizing guarantee. We ship back and forth to you at our cost if you have a sizing issue.
PROPER SIZING
Normally adding a half size to adidas and Asics shoes works pretty well. Each wrestler likes to have his or her shoes fit differently, but this is a good rule of thumb. Some wrestlers like their shoes so tight that blood will have a hard time flowing to their feet. Generally, I like to see the width of a thumb at the toe to allow for both comfort and a little growth.
If you have a wide foot, we recommend adding at least a half size or even a full size in some circumstances to your normal gym shoe size.
The common error we see in cases that we have a sizing issue is customers do not start with their wrestler's normal gym shoe size. They "think" it is a size 9.5 and it really is a 10.5. The key is to find your wrestlers most recent pair of gym shoes and use that to purchase your wrestling shoes.
Another mistake is using a wrestling shoe made by different manufacturers to size your shoes. For example, you shouldn't use a pair of Asics to size a Matman shoe. Each manufacturer's shoes fit differently, even within the same brand. WrestlingGear.Com makes sizing recommendations based on customer's feedback. For example, each shoe has information on its web page whether we recommend adding a half size or even a full size to the normal gym shoe size.
SETTING A BUDGET - YOUTH AND ADULT SIZES
For youth sizes, your budget range will be much narrower than the range for an adult shoe. For example, a pair of youth wrestling shoes will run about $33 to $44 depending on which brand you choose. The adult price range is much wider, from $36 to $130.
What do you get for the more expensive shoes? I think you get a little more stylish shoe, better material usually more leather than nylon, lighter material, better sole, and a better lace guard mechanism.
COLOR SELECTION
Most often color is the second determinant after budget for what shoes a customer buys. Once you decide on your budget, you will be limited in your color options. For the most part entry level and intermediate level shoes come in the standard freestyle colors: red, royal blue, and- of course-black. Black is most often carried by most retail stores that are general sporting goods stores and often times you will have to shop with a catalog company to buy the red and the royal blue shoes. Sporting goods stores usually stop at the intermediate level shoe, so if you want an elite shoe you will almost certainly have to find a catalog or internet-based store to shop with.
SPLIT SOLE OR UNI-SOLE
Many wrestlers have strong feelings about split sole or uni-sole for the bottom of their shoe. Usually whatever type of shoes you have when you start wrestling is what type you tend to stay with. Asics shoes are all uni-sole and adidas shoes are all split soles; at least this is the case with the current year models. So if you have to have either one of these types of soles, the brand you shop with is already decided.
SUMMARY
We tried to discuss some of the different options you have when buying wrestling shoes. Often times the two most important factors in buying shoes are your budget and what color you want. After you decide this your options will be significantly reduced and you can focus on the split sole vs. uni-sole decision, if you like the lace guard mechanism or not, and the size you are looking to purchase.
Drop us a note via our contact form on our website at http://www.wrestlinggear.com to let us know what you thought of the article. We tried to write something that would help a new wrestler and parents figure out what wrestling shoes to purchase.

Job
Opening: TheWrestlingMall.com Looking For Senior Editor
Attention Wrestling Fans,
For almost three years I have worked as the Senior Editor of The Wrestling Mall. It,s been a position I have thoroughly enjoyed, and a position where I have had a chance to meet and work with a number of great people and be a part of a number of great wrestling events.
However, another career opportunity has come up, and I will be reducing my role with The Wrestling Mall. While I still plan to be involved with the Web site and the sport of wrestling, it means we must find a replacement to handle the day-to-day operations of the Web site. Therefore, we are now searching for a Senior Editor. If interested please read the entire job description below and apply as instructed.
Thank you to everyone who made this experience one that I will never forget.
Matt Krumrie
The Wrestling Mall
info@thewrestlingmall.com
JOB OPENING: Senior Editor, TheWrestlingMall.com
TheWrestlingMall.com, one of the leading amateur wrestling Web sites in the country, is looking for a qualified Senior Editor who can step in right away and keep us moving in the right direction.
The Wrestling Mall, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is one
of the top resources on the Internet for amateur wrestling news.
We cover it all, from high school, to college and international
news, to the newly formed Real Pro Wrestling league.
The Senior Editor plays a key role in covering wrestling at all
levels. The Senior Editor will be responsible for all editorial
content on the Web site, maintaining and updating the Web site,
writing feature stories, covering events locally and nationally,
hiring and managing freelance writers, editing and posting press
releases, calling coaches and wrestlers for interviews, creating
story leads, and entering results, rankings and other information
into the Web site database. In addition, the Senior Editor will
be responsible for writing press releases promoting our 2005-06
Live Web casts of select college and high school matches, and
working closely with sports information directors to come up with
story ideas, news, information and tidbits.
The position is full-time from October through March, and 20-25 hours per week from April through September. This is a salaried position and includes employer-paid health benefits. Senior Editor must be able and willing to travel. Event coverage during the 2005-06 college wrestling season includes the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invite, the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, North Carolina, the National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the Big Ten Tournament in Bloomington, Indiana, and the NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City. Other local events, such as covering select Minnesota Gophers home matches and Augsburg college matches are also part of the job. Offseason events coverage includes the Junior and Cadet Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, and possible USA Wrestling events such as the Olympic and World Team Trials.
The Senior Editor must have strong news judgment, and be able to determine what is the big news and hot story everyone wants to read, as well as be able to write headlines and learn the Web site management tools to post articles and maintain the Web site. Familiarity with updating Web sites and HTML is helpful, but can be taught. The right candidate would be someone with a journalism background, preferably with an emphasis in sports writing. However, strong news skills and writing experience is key. The right person must also be proficient using computers to communicate and using programs such as Adobe Photoshop to format pictures, understand where and how to get images, and be self-motivated and able to talk with coaches and athletes in person and over the phone. This is a high-paced job during the wrestling season, and the ability to multi-task and handle a variety of projects at one time is crucial. The right person will also be able to think outside the box, formulate and suggest new ideas and try new things to continue the success of the Web site.
The person must also live within the Twin Cities area, or be willing to relocate to the Twin Cities. This is a great job for someone who wants to be involved with the sport of amateur wrestling, and play a key role in the delivery of news and information to the wrestling community.
For more information or to apply, please send a resume, references, and any other information to Jesse Krebs at Webmaster@TheWrestlingMall.com, or call 612-333-9950, extension 301.

National
Federation of State High School Associations Initiates Program
to Help Schools Affected by Hurricanes
Contact: Bob Gardner
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (October 5, 2005) - High schools interested
in
helping schools affected by the recent disasters in Louisiana,
Mississippi and Texas can adopt a school with a similar nickname
through
the Mascot Adoption Program (MAP) initiated by the National Federation
of State High School Associations (NFHS).
Schools across the United States are encouraged to initiate
fund-raising efforts, or perhaps use donations from ticket proceeds,
to
provide funds for schools damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina
and
Rita.
"As the national organization for high school sports, we
have
received calls from schools across America wanting to help those
affected by these disasters," said Robert F. Kanaby, NFHS
executive
director. "There has been a great outpouring of sympathy
and concern,
and I expect we will have many schools that will become involved
in
assisting those schools in the Gulf South that have suffered great
losses."
The MAP program will be orchestrated through the NFHS Web site,
www.nfhs.org. A list of the schools affected by these disasters
has been
posted, along with the nicknames of the schools. A total of 130
schools
(92 in Louisiana and 38 in Mississippi) are included in the initial
list. Schools interested in becoming involved with this fund-raising
effort can find a school that has a similar nickname and choose
to adopt
that school by entering all the necessary information on the Web
site.
When the sponsoring school completes its fund-raising
activities, the school will send its contribution directly to
the
disaster-affected school in the Gulf South.
"Once a school selects another school to adopt, we encourage
the
sponsoring school to publicize, within its student body and community,
the names of the school and mascot it has adopted," Kanaby
said.
"Schools helping schools, student-athletes and activity participants
helping their counterparts - this is a great opportunity to help
these
schools and individuals that are in desperate need and provide
a service
leadership opportunity to all."
For more information on the Mascot Adoption Program, contact Bob
Gardner, chief operating officer at the NFHS in Indianapolis.

Raising money for Mark Strickland Jesuit High Coach and former
Old Dominion Wrestler
I'm a little late in getting this email out, but "better
late then never," right? You know how we wrestlers procrastinate.
I promised that I would send this out to everyone I knew in the
wrestling community, and that I would also ask those people to
keep the Strickland family in their prayers as well. So, if you
practice a religion or faith, I/we ask that you remember this
family (as well as everyone left in the wreckage of Katrina) in
your communication with your higher power.
The auction, as of right now (11:00 AM EST), ends in 2 days and
4 hours. I would hope that bids would be for the family and not
just the mat, but for those that are interested, the wrestling
mat sample is signed by Gold Medalist Cael Sanderson, Rulon Gardner,
Dan Gable, Kevin Jackson, Tom Brands, John Smith, Silver Medalist
Matt Gahfari, and World Champion Dremiel Byers.
The link to the actual eBay auction is further below, in Paul
Swisher's original email, however I have added a link to an article
about the "campaign" that appeared on TheMat.com that
provides further information:
Autographed wrestling mat sample, signed by eight wrestling
legends, placed on EBay to raise funds for New Orleans coach who
lost home
Link: http://www.themat.com/pressbox/pressdetail.asp?aid=13275
Please forward to all you know in the wrestling community - if
you feel it is appropriate. I know we are all busy, but at the
same time, we are all very fortunate to not have had to lose our
homes hell not to lose EVERYTHING. Take a few minutes for
the Strickland Family.
Also, if anyone is not interested in doing the whole eBay
thing, or the autographed mat at all, or wishes to make an anonymous
contribution or provide some other means of support, there is
information both in THEMAT.COM article (link above) and on the
auction webpage providing additional contact information for the
family and how to reach them.
Yours in Wrestling,
Greg Purnell
Friends,
For those of you who know Mark Strickland former Old Dominion
