NWCA Announces Arizona State as Host of 46th All-Star Wrestling Classic

One of the most pretigious wrestling events in the country will be hosted at Wells Fargo Arena on Nov. 21.

TEMPE- Arizona State University will be hosting the 46th annual National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic Presented by The Marines at Wells Fargo Arena Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m., as announced by the NWCA on Thursday. The event will feature 20 of the top wrestlers from around the country, along with some local feature matches, and the complete lineup will be released starting at the end of October.

"The All-Star Classic being held at ASU is a first and a great opportunity for ASU wrestling and the greater Arizona wrestling community," head coach Shawn Charles said. "I would like to personally thank the NWCA for giving us the chance to host this prestigious event."

Charles, one of only 12 wrestlers from ASU to have competed in the All-Star Classic, won by decision over Nebraska's Tony Purler in 1993.

This event is coming on the heels of a championship ending to the 2010-11 season as Sun Devils Anthony Robles and Bubba Jenkins Bubba Jenkins each were crowned national champions of their respective weight classes. The wins, which gave the Sun Devils two finalists and two champions in the same year for the first time since 1993, punctuated two impressive careers as the seniors wrestled their final matches on the raised stage inside the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. ASU was the only program in the nation last season to have multiple champions as eight other schools each had one champion. The team placed sixth overall at the championships.

"We are pleased that ASU and Coach Shawn Charles have stepped up to host this signature event and showcase a renewed sense of pride behind their team, which just a few years ago was briefly dropped," NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said. "Having the top athletes in the country coming to compete in this event shows the relentless resolve of the coaches, athletes, and fans in our sport."

The NWCA All-Star Classic had been a long-standing traditional event and used to be referred to as the East-West Meet until 1988, when it became the All-Star Classic. This will be the eighth time in the event's 46-year span that it has been held in the West, with Oregon hosting it four times (1977, 1979, 1990, and 2007), California twice (2009 and 2010) and Utah once (1985). The United States Marine Corps has been a long standing presenting sponsor of this signature meet for eight of the past 10 years.

New Format for Division I National Dual Meet Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT - The NWCA/Cliff Keen Division I National Dual Meet Championships will take on a new format for the 2011-12 season.

The tournament will feature four, six-team regional locations, with each of the four regional champions advancing to a national championship.

The teams for the 2012 event were selected primarily off the final 2010-11 NWCA Team Rankings as determined by the NWCA Coaches Poll. Twenty-two of the top 25 teams from last year's final coaches poll ranking have accepted invitations, including eight of the top ten teams. The four regions for the 2012 tournament will be:

- Midwest (host TBD), Iowa, Iowa State, Oregon State, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Northern Iowa.

- Cornell (host), Central Michigan, Oklahoma, Purdue, Illinois, and American.

- Rutgers (host), Minnesota, Kent State, Michigan, Missouri, and Cal Poly.

- Oklahoma State (host), Boise State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Tennessee-Chattanooga.

"We're excited to be part of this event along with several of the other premier college wrestling programs in the country," said CMU head coach Tom Borrelli. "This new format will not only create a lot of excitement for our fans, but it also gives us a great opportunity to advance and grow the sport of wrestling."

Regional competitions will occur the weekend of Feb. 11, 2012, with exact dates and times varying by site. The four regional champions will compete for the national title the following weekend at the campus site of one of the four participating institutions.

In the second year of implementation and beyond, a new qualifying structure will be established which will place emphasis on the outcome of regular season dual meets. One team in each of the Division I conferences will be declared the dual meet team champion by the end of January, with at-large teams selected (based on their success in the current year) to round out the 24-team championship field.

The ultimate goal of this event is to create a premier national dual meet championship that will become a platform for growing spectator and media interest in wrestling both at the institutional and national levels. The initial rollout in the 2011-12 season is designed to assess how the dual meet championships fit into the existing wrestling calendar and also to determine the revenue generating potential for the purposes establishing a revenue-share with participating teams in future years.

"This new concept is one of three critical components of the strategic plan being developed by the NWCA and the NCAA Wrestling Committee," said Brian Smith, NWCA President and head coach at the University of Missouri. "We need to create more excitement around regular season dual meets, especially our conference dual meets. Every mainstream spectator sport in America has an emphasis on every regular season game/competition which determines their advancement into the postseason. Right now the infrastructure of intercollegiate wrestling is geared toward an individual championship at the end of the season and until that changes, we will struggle with growing the spectator and media base on most college campuses."

Ticket and more specific event information for the 2012 tournament will be available at www.nwcaonline.com and other selected websites after the Midwest regional site is confirmed, but no later than Sept. 1.

His team finished 7th at the EIWA Championships, with two wrestlers earning trips to the NCAA Championships. He had six wrestlers earn All-Ivy League Recognition as well this season, including one first team selection in Kevin Lester.

In each year since Buckley has been the head coach his team has successfully made the All-Academic Team, five of those years were in the Top 10.

St. Cloud State head coach Steve Costanzo garners the honors for Division II, he was also Bob Bubb Award Winner in 2003 when he was the head coach at Dana College.

His team placed second at the NCAA Championships in 2010-11, which is the best they have done in team history. They also earned a third place finish at the 2011 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.

Costanzo's thirteen year career holds 47 All-Americans which is almost even to his record of 46 NWCA All-Academic Athletes. In the past four seasons his team has finished the year in the Top 20 Academically.

Representing Division III is Ron Beaschler, the head coach at Ohio Northern, who wears many hats other than just coach. He is currently serving as the chairperson of the Department of Human Performance and Sports Sciences, he is an assistant professor in the Health and Physical Education Department and coordinates the sport management program at Ohio Northern.

Amidst those jobs he also will be starting his term as the NCAA Secretary Rules Editor a longtime position that was held by Bob Bubb until 2011.

Beaschler is currently the all-time winningest coach in school history and also holds the longest tenure as head wrestling coach at ONU.

Tim Jager of Morningside College has been coaching at the NAIA school for seven seasons. He is currently the President of the NAIA Coaches Association. He was also the 2011 GPAC and NAIA North Region Coach of the Year after he guided the Mustangs to their first-ever GPAC and NAIA North Region Championships

Jager's team also came in No. 2 on this year's NWCA/NAIA All-Academic Team with five wrestlers receiving individual honors.

Highline Community College head coach Scott Norton has been with their program since 2003. He had four All-Americans for the second year in a row, with his team placing 10th at the NJCAA Championships.

The Highline team placed third in their region behind the eventual first and second place teams at the NCAA Championships Clackamas CC and North Idaho College.

Mike Tellez of Rio Hondo Community College has been the head coach for the past five years; he has had 13 All-Academic Wrestlers in that time. He has also won three conference championships and has seen a dramatic improvement with his team in his time at Rio Hondo.

This year his team faced adversity at their first tournament of the year when one of his wrestlers, Jesus Cruz, collapsed during a match and went into cardiac arrest, he passed away after arriving at the hospital. Coach Tellez kept his team together during this difficult time and they finished the season placing 20th at States.

"I want to personally congratulate my fellow coaches who are receiving the Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award this year. They are all tremendous ambassadors for our sport and they represent the highest standard in coaching," said NWCA President Brian Smith.

44th NWCA All- Star Classic Presented by the Wrestling Alumni of the College of William & Mary

By Tammy Tedesco

The NWCA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the 44th NWCA All-Star Classic Presented by the Wrestling Alumni of the College of William & Mary as they partner with the NWCA to raise awareness of the California State Fullerton Wrestling Program situation, and to highlight the talent showcased on November 22, 2009 at Titan Gym on the campus of California State Fullerton.

William & Mary had their first and only ever All-Star participant in 1975, when Mark Belknap a two-time All-American at 134 pounds defeated Jim Miller of Northern Iowa. Twenty years later in 1995 the William & Mary program was dropped. Another athlete who saw his share of hardship was Rob Larmore who started his career off at Tennessee, who dropped the program his freshman year when he then transferred to William & Mary and in 1990 he also earned All-American status.

This year they are pledging their support to help other Universities like California State Fullerton keep the dream alive and allow young athletes to keep competing well into the future.

"Wrestling at William & Mary was a very big part of our lives during some of our most important formative years as young men. Wrestling taught us lessons and values that have served us very well throughout our adult lives. "The words that would come to one's mind if one was to read the resumes of our group can be described as a basket of superlatives," said Kirk Hankla. "We think that the dropping of university wrestling programs across the country is wrong and short sighted. Of all the sports, we believe that none provides the sense of pride and work ethic that derives from participation in the sport of wrestling."

This particular group of wrestling alumni is working to preserve the sport that was near and dear to them in college. They have created The Society for the Preservation of Traditional Sport (SPOTS), a 501c3 non-profit organization that will focus specifically on wrestling and other "Olympic" style sports that are in the same situation. The NWCA All-Star Classic is a way to help launch awareness of SPOTS to the public and allow others to join forces in preserving the sports that have helped to change the lives of many. To learn more about this organization go to <http://www.thespots.org>www.thespots.org.

From past experiences Hankla knows the feeling of seeing his college program dropped, "It is much harder to start or re-start a wrestling program than to save one that is still in existence. When wrestling was dropped at William & Mary, a knife of sorts was driven in to the cores of our souls; it twists each time another wrestling program is dropped. Given what wrestling has meant to us, we have resolved that we will do what we can to see that the mistake which was perpetrated by the College of William & Mary is not repeated again and again. We hope that you will join us, a group of former collegiate wrestlers that attended a university on the other side of the country, to save wrestling at Cal State Fullerton."

The 44th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic will take place on Sunday, November 22, 2009, at 2 p.m. on the campus of California State Fullerton in Titan Gym. Tickets can be purchased through TicketLeap: http://savefullertonwrestling.ticketleap.com/ .
