"The Rocky Mountain Nationals is one of the most outstanding wrestling events in the nation! I look forward to being a part of the Rocky Mountain Nationals this year."                               Ken Chertow, United States Olympian & Founder of Ken Chertow Camps

"I'm highly impressed by Rocky Mountain Nationals and it's tournaments. The things you look for in a tournament is excellence of competition and good  organization. The RMN tournaments are at the top of each of those two criteria."   John B. Fritz, Director of Athletics, former Wrestling Coach, Penn State University

"The RMN Event series are the best tournaments in the country. They are professionally run and produced. They are first-rate tournaments and a true complement of the sport of wrestling." Ron Granieri, President, Colorado School of Wrestling

EIWA Tournament Highlights

Steve Sutton (141) - After a two year hiatus from the wrestling team, Steve made a comeback in an effort to help the team and to be able to leave the sport with pride.  He accomplished both of these goals.  His first match saw him wrestle the #8 seed and it was quite an exciting match.  The wrestler from East Stroudsburg gave 2008 NCAA all-American, Matt Kyler, a very close match at the 2007 EIWA Tournament.  Although he was dominating Sutton on his feet He was strong in his feet but unbeknownst to him, he was unaware of Sutton's strength on top and chose bottom for his choice going into the second period.  Although he gave it all he could to keep from getting turned on bottom, he gave up two stalling calls which equated to one point for Sutton.  In the third, Sutton naturally chose top and turned him once as well as getting two more stall calls on behalf of his ESU opponent.  With the score tied at nine a piece, Su! tton flipped his opponent over to his back and pinned him with seconds left on the clock.  It was quite a way to start the round.  He got a shout-out from Jason Bryant, the tournament's emcee announcing that many fans might know his name from his thrdr place finish in 2003 (and NCAA berth). Although Steve would lose his next two bouts, it was still a memorable moment from the weekend for someone that hadn't competed in two years.

Anthony Constantino (149) - As a former NCAA Qualifier who lost his spot last year to star freshman, Matt Dunn, Anthony emerged this year on a mission to go out on a high note to conclude his career.  As the #6 seed in a loaded weight class, he lost a very close match to Cesar Grajales from Penn, the eventual EIWA Champion.  Following that loss, he rattled a off a couple victories and found himself in a rematch against the the #5 seed, DJ, Meagher from Cornell (Anthony had lost to him by a score of 8-1 only a few weeks before). The winner of this match would determine who would find them selves in the consolation finals, thus guaranteeing themselves an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  It was a very close match with no score after the first period.  Anthony had a strong game plan going into this match and it paid off.  He shut down all of Meagher's offensive attacks and scored a takedown of his own in the second period.  In t! he third period, he clinched the match with another takedown by a score of 4-1 and thus qualified for the NCAA Tournament.  Anthony lost his final match of the weekend in the consolation finals but still had a fine tournament.

Ryan Flores (HWT) - Last year as a high school senior, Ryan capped off his senior year with his second state tittle as well as a finalist in the high school national finals.  Coming in this year, we had very high expectations for him.  Unfortunately, he was injured the entire first semester and did not make his debut until the WIlkes-Barre Tournament where he won his weight class defeating various talented wrestlers from the northeast.  He then wrestled well during the second semester while we rotated between him and senior Jed Wade, who was also having a good season.  Ryan ended up representing us at the EIWA Tournament and did incredibly well.  This weight class was also a loaded weight class and as the #7 seed, I knew he was significantly better than his seed and that no one wanted to draw him early in the tournament.  After a bye first round, he drew the #2 seed from Penn, Trey McClean.  Fifteen seconds going into the match, ! McClean shot a high crotch on Ryan and had Ryan bouncing on one leg.  Ryan, with outstanding use of his hips, locked around his opponents head and fell backwards as McClean pushed into him.  McClean rolled over his back where he did not move as Ryan was awarded the pin in :35 seconds.  Next up for Flores was Levon Mock, a 2007 NCAA Qualifier and the #3 seed.  Within the first twenty seconds of the match, Flores used his patented "foot stomp" and threw Mock to his back.  It looked certain that Mock was pinned but unfortunately he fought off his back.  Mock scored a reversal of his own as did Flores and when the bout was over, Flores won by a score of 11-6.  In the finals, it was a very tight match against the #1 seed and #5 nationally ranked Ed Prendergast from Navy.  The score was 1-0 Prendergast going into the third as Flores had the choice and decided to go down. Flores, severely outsized decided to go down.  A! s Prendergast was on top, Flores tried to utilize hi ships by ! creating a scramble so he could reverse Prendergast.  Unfortunately, Flores gave up a set of back points and lost the match by a 5-1 score.  It was a well fought match and Flores became the talk of the EIWA Tournament.

NCAA Tournament

Brandon Kinney, Anthony Constantino, and Ryan Flores each represented Columbia University at the NCAA Tournament.  Unfortunately, Ryan Flores was the only member of the team that won a match in St. Louis.  We certainly did not have the best draws however, we did not wrestle like we know we could have.  For Brandon and Anthony, these were their last matches of their career but for Ryan, this served as great experience so he know what tp expect when he is there next year.  Regardless, we are proud of them since they dedicated themselves to become the best throughout the entire season and helped us win various dual meets this year.Invitation to the AAU Grand National

Ken Chertow

Holiday Inn Denver International Airport and Convention Center is a great location for our camp. (Note that it is being upgraded and will become a Crown Plaza soon, likely by the time summer camp arrives.) We will sleep, eat and wrestle in this great facility. We will have a huge wrestling area and will divide the wrestlers by size, age, and experience. We will have spacious guest rooms, indoor pool and whirlpool, and fitness center. We offer free shuttle service to the nearby airport. For families attending the hotel offers easy access to the city's famous sights, including the Denver Children's Museum, Denver Art Museum, the Denver Mint, and the Pro Sports Stadiums and Arenas in town.

2009 Bearcat Invitational

My name is Cain Beard and I am the head wrestling coach at Rock Hill High School in Rock Hill, SC. I would like to get some teams from Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Virginia to come to our Bearcat Invitational on January 2-3, 2009. The Bearcat has traditionally been one of SC's toughest tournaments and we want to continue to improve the quality of the wrestling year in and year out. Could you possibly post something on your website about our tournament or would you know of some websites that I could post an advirtisement on? Thanks for all of your help.

Sincerely,

Cain Beard

2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships

ST. LOUIS – February 28, 2008 – The wrestling fans are coming.  More than 18,000 of them will descend on St. Louis for the 2008 NCAA® Division I Wrestling Championships at Scottrade Center, March 20-22, 2008.  The event, hosted by the St. Louis Sports Commission and the University of Missouri, marks the fourth time that the Gateway City has hosted the championships this decade.

In appreciation of NCAA wrestling fans and the special nature of the championships, the St. Louis Local Organizing Committee has prepared an unprecedented schedule of events to surround the matches themselves. These events aim to celebrate collegiate wrestling, involve the region’s youth wrestling community and provide a festive atmosphere for local and visiting fans:

·       The festivities kick off just after the mats hit the floor at Scottrade Center.  On Tuesday, March 18, the St. Louis Sports Commission will host a Youth Wrestling Clinic for young wrestlers ages 10-16.  The clinic will feature instruction from college coaches and student-athletes. Participants will also receive a free commemorative T-shirt.  For registration information, call 314/206-7388 or visit www.stlsports.org/wrestling/group.php.

·       The National Wrestling Coaches Association will host their annual awards social on Wednesday, March 19, at the Hard Rock Café in St. Louis Union Station, just a block from the arena.  The NWCA will honor its 2007 and 2008 scholastic and collegiate award winners at the event.  For more information, visit www.nwcaonline.com.

Williams Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - Williams College hosted nine other teams today for the Williams Invitational wrestling tournament. The Ephs placed second overall, just three and a half points behind Roger Williams, with 141 points. Following the Ephs were Ithaca College and Johnson and Wales University (JWU) finishing with 135 and 102 points, respectively. See the final team results below.

Rob Klein of Muhlenberg, champion of the 149 pound weight class, was named the Most Oustanding Wrestler of the tournament. Klein defeated the first and fourth seeds on his way to an 11-5 victory over Jon Paxos of Ithaca in the finals.

Host Williams placed 11 wrestlers in the tournament, including four champions. Ethan Cohen '09, Corey Paulish '11, Carl Breitenstein '10, and Kyle Ayer '09 each won their weight class. Tri-Captain Cohen won his first two matches with a 17-2 tech fall and 43-second pin before becoming champion by forfeit. Paulish, a freshman, defeated the number one seed, Brian Zane of Norwich, 7-5 in the semifinals before winning a tough 3-2 decision over Chad Winowich of Ithaca. Breitenstein, the number one seed at 157 pounds,  dealt out three major decisions before defeating the number two seed, Nick Sanko of Ithaca, 5-4 in the finals. Ayer, shutout the number four seed, Sam Collara of Simpson, 8-0 in the semifinals on his way to pinning the second seeded Pat McCrohan of JWU in the finals.

Freshmen Josh Mattana, finished in third place at 125 pounds after losing to the number one seeded John Gregory of Ithaca, in the semifinals. Tri-Captain Mike Penza '09, had a great day finishing in fourth place, his only two losses coming at the hands of the second seeded Aljamin Sterling of Morrisville. Dylan Rittenburg '10 also finished  in fourth place, rattling off four straights win after losing his first round match. Tri-Captain Nic Miragliuolo '08 finished fifth after losing a close 3-2 semifinals match to Jon Paxos of Ithaca.

The Ephs faceoff next with SUNY Cortland at Springfield College on January 8th.

Southern Scuffle

125

Seeds: 1) Jayson Ness-Minnesota, 2) Dave Tomasette-Hofstra, 3) Michael Sees-Bloomsburg, 4) Eric Morrill-Edinboro, 5) Nic Bedelyon-Kent State, 6) James Nicholson-Old Dominion, 7) Justin Staylor-Virginia Tech, 8) Drew Forshey-North Carolina

Analysis: Ness is the only returning All-American and a heavy favorite, yet this is still a solid weight class. His biggest threats come from Tomasette and Sees, both ranked in D1CW’s top ten. Tomasette and Sees met earlier this season at the Northeast Duals, in a match the Hofstra wrestler won by major decision 13-3.

Potential Upset: Bedelyon has already proven he can be a threat after his early season pin of Sees. He has spent parts of his true freshman season ranked in the top 25. ODU’s Nicholson has been able to hang with some of the nation’s best so far this season. He will be a tough match for Sees if seeds hold up.

Prediction: Ness over Tomasette 6-2

133

Seeds: 1) Lou Ruggirello-Hofstra, 2) Mack Reiter-Minnesota, 3) Eric Albright-Virginia, 4) Dan Mitcheff-Kent State, 5) Mike Grey-Cornell, 6) Joe Baker-Navy, 7) Jeff Hedges-UNC Greensboro, 8) Ricky Deubel-Edinboro, 9) Kyle Hutter-Old Dominion

Analysis: The most likely final is a rematch of the NWCA All-Star meet. Reiter, the 2x All American lost in part because of his inability to get up from bottom. It also was a problem in Reiter’s loss to Iowa State’s Nick Fanthorpe. The rest of the field, after Ruggirello and Reiter, is a very solid and capable group. Anyone from the 3 seed to the 9 seed is capable of placing third or even pulling an upset to advance to the final.

Potential Upset: While I’ve said that everyone at 133 is capable of winning, I’ll give a shout out to the quietly undefeated Kent State wrestler Dan Mitcheff. Mitcheff will most likely see Grey in the quarters. The two met at the Body Bar Invit., where Mitcheff was victorious 9-7.

Prediction: Reiter over Ruggirello 4-3

141

Seeds: 1) Charles Griffin-Hofstra, 2) Manuel Rivera-Minnesota, 3) Joe Caramanica-NC State, 4) Adam Frey-Cornell, 5) Drew Lashaway-Kent State, 6) Ryan Williams-Old Dominion, 7) Levi Jones-Boise State, 8) Chris Bencivenga-UNC Greensboro, 9) Alex Krom-Maryland
Analysis: Another very tough weight class with two of 2006’s champions Frey (133) and Rivera, as well as Rivera’s finals opponent Alex Krom of Maryland. The top six seeds at 141 are all ranked in the top 16 of D1CW’s NCAA rankings. Someone to keep an eye on is NC State’s Caramanica. He does still does not get a whole lot of respect, despite a fourth place finish at Las Vegas and a current top ten ranking. A semi-final win against Rivera can definitely change that perception.

Potential Upset: Ryan Williams is a dangerous 6th seed. He owns a few wins over top 25 opponents and took top seed Charles Griffin to sudden victory overtime in Las Vegas.

Prediction: Frey over Rivera 5-3

149

Seeds: 1) Dustin Schlatter-Minnesota, 2) Darrion Caldwell-NC State, 3) Scott Ervin-Appalachian State, 4) Eric Medina-Maryland, 5) Kyle Fried-Binghamton, 6) Adam Hall-Boise State, 7) Kaylen Baxter-Old Dominion, 8) Clint Sponseller-Kent State, 9) Vincent Ramirez-North Carolina, 10) Bryce Saddoris-Navy

Analysis: This is the one everybody has been talking about. Schlatter/Caldwell. Many questions surround this match. Will Schlatter’s excellent defense slow down Caldwell? Will Caldwell get sloppy and exposed by Schlatter? Can Schlatter handle the offensive onslaught than Caldwell will throw at him? Will Caldwell be able to wrestle 7 minutes with Schlatter?
Caldwell comes into this match with a pin of Schlatter’s longtime rival Brent Metcalf of Iowa, as well as a major decision over 2007 runner up Josh Churella and win over JP O’Connor in the Las Vegas semi’s and finals, respectively. Schlatter on the other hand, comes in undefeated, but does not score proficiently like Caldwell when facing top competition. I like the underdog in this one….

Potential Upset: The five seed Kyle Fried of Binghamton deserves recognition for the fine season he is putting together. The current top-ranked CAA wrestler Fried recently majored last years CAA Champ Mike Roberts of Boston U. All of this aside, I don’t see a whole lot of upsets taking place at 149. The 3 and 4 seed Ervin and Medina are very tough and capable of making a finals run, but I don’t call a 3 seed being the 2 seed a huge upset.

Prediction: Caldwell over Schlatter 7-6

157

Seeds: 1) Gregor Gillespie-Edinboro, 2) Jordan Leen Cornell, 3) CP Schlatter Minnesota, 4) Tyler Sherfey-Boise State, 5) Matt Moley-Bloomsburg, 6) Kurt Gross-Kent State, 7) Jon Bonilla-Bowman-Hofstra, 8) Ben Fiacco-North Carolina

Analysis: The final at 157 has the potential for “Schlatter’s Revenge”, sort of. Gillespie upset returning champ Dustin Schlatter in the 2007 NCAA Semi’s, on his way to a championship of his own. A year later and a jump in weight, now Gillespie may have to deal with Dustin’s older brother CP. A potential roadblock for this match stands in returning All-American Jordan Leen. Leen recently was victorious in Reno and could meet CP in the semi’s if seeds hold up.

Potential Upset: 2x MAC Champ Kurt Gross has the six seed. Gross has not seen much action this season, but if he is in top form he could give the bottom bracket some headaches.

Prediction: Gillespie over Schlatter 7-2

165

Seeds: 1) Mack Lewnes-Cornell, 2) Scott Glasser-Minnesota, 3) Chris Brown-Old Dominion, 4) Keegan Mueller-North Carolina, 5) Jarrod King-Edinboro, 6) Kurt Swartz-Boise State, 7) Michael Chaires-Virginia, 8) Ryan Patrovich-Hofstra

Analysis: 165 will be one of only two weight classes (197 is the other) without any past All-Americans wrestling. Youth is the key word here. Five of the eight seeded wrestlers are freshman and none of the eight are seniors. What I am saying is, after a few rounds the seeds could go out the window. Mack Lewnes’ two titles this season (Body Bar, and Reno) makes him the favorite, but anyone here can go on a hot streak and win the title.

Potential Upset: Kurt Swartz, a redshirt freshman from Boise State. He already has a few quality wins on his resume, but is yet to become a household name. Also, I think that this will be a big weekend for Virginia freshman Michael Chaires. He is competing as a true freshman and was one of the top recruits nationally in 2007.

Prediction: Lewnes over Brown 6-3

174

Seeds: 1) Matt Stolpinski-Navy, 2) Mike Letts-Maryland, 3) Steve Anceravage-Cornell, 4) Gabe Dretsch-Minnesota, 5) Alton Lucas-Hofstra, 6) Phil Moricone-Edinboro, 7) Josh Patterson-Binghamton, 8) Eric Decker-Virginia Tech, 9) Neal Martin-Appalachian State

Analysis: This weight class just gives me the feeling that anything can happen. The one seed Stolpinski already has four losses (five counting the All-Star match), yet he is the only returning All-American. Two wrestlers lumped in the middle of the seeds, Dretsch and Lucas, scare me as much as anyone. Both can be world-beaters, but have had problems with consistency over their careers.

Potential Upset: Aside from Dretsch/Lucas, if you want to call them upsets, I am keeping an eye on Binghamton’s Josh Patterson. Patterson upset Alton Lucas at 2007’s CAA tournament, then gave Rider’s Doug Umbehauer all he could handle. He looks dangerous here as a seventh seed.

Prediction: Anceravage over Lucas 4-1

184

Seeds: 1) Roger Kish-Minnesota, 2) Rocco Caponi-Virginia, 3) Josh Haines-Maryland, 4) Ryan Goodman-NC State, 5) Jesse Strawn-Old Dominion, 6) Eric Chine-Kent State, 7) Michael Moore-Cornell, 8) Matt Parsons-Navy

Analysis: This is one weight class with a clear-cut favorite. He is Roger Kish, former a NCAA Runner-Up. After him comes the Big 3 of the ACC. Caponi, Haines, and Goodman make up the conference’s deepest weight class, and this tournament will give an indication of where to rank the three.

Potential Upset: After the top four seeds there is a big drop. For any of those wrestlers to lose it would be considered a huge…..well, upset. If one happens here, I’ll go on record now saying I will miss it.

Prediction: Kish over Caponi 8-2

Seeds: 1) Joe Rovelli-Hofstra, 2) Hudson Taylor-Maryland, 3) Darren Burns-UNC Greensboro, 4) David Mendoza-Old Dominion, 5) Brent Jones-Virginia, 6) Pat Bradshaw-Edinboro, 7) Dennis Drury-North Carolina

Analysis: This is a weight that appears to have very little difference between the top three seeds. Rovelli, Taylor, and Burns are all ranked 6th, 10th and 12th respectively by D1CW. In my opinion the potential semi between Taylor and Burns could be one of the best matches in the tournament. My thinking is that a “home-mat advantage” for Burns will carry him into the finals and to a title.

Potential Upset: Pat Bradshaw looks like a tough match as a sixth seed. He is currently 2-0 this season against the 4th seed Mendoza. I’m not quite sure how that happens, but since he’s 1-1 against the 7th seed Drury, I guess it all works out.

Prediction: Burns over Rovelli 4-2

285

Seeds: 1) Ed Prendergest-Navy, 2) Zach Hammond-Cornell, 3) Mike Spaid-Bloomsburg, 4) Joe Fendone-Edinboro, 5) Jermail Porter-Kent State, 6) Scott Steele-Navy, 7) Nick Smith-Boise State, 8) Justin Dobies-North Carolina

Analysis: What a predicament Navy has!!!! Prendergest recently won Reno and is a returning EIWA Champ, while teammate Scott Steele beat him in a wrestle-off and in the Navy Classic Finals. Aside from the Midshipmen, this is a very solid group with one All-American, three seed Mike Spaid.

Potential Upset: While I will give the usual precursor that “they most likely won’t score much, so there will be lots of close matches and probably multiple upsets”, I still will single out two. The first is Nick Smith. He owns a victory over a ranked opponent (Zach Shaeffer of Pitt) this season, to go along with other quality wins. Also I have to mention my pick to win Steele. He is seeded sixth, so in theory he must pull a few upsets in order to win.

Prediction: Steele over Prendergest 3-1

2008 Brute Adidas Nationals

To All Past Brute-adidas Nationals Participants:

We are pleased to announce registration for the 2008 Brute-adidas Nationals is now OPEN!

Thanks to all of your feedback and input, we have made a variety of changes and additions for the 2008 Brute-adidas Nationals to ensure all participants, coaches, parents and fans will experience a first class event.

Below are many of the changes for this year's event which we are certain you will enjoy!

1. We have secured a larger and more user friendly arena in downtown Kansas City in the new Power & Light District which will afford us arena seating with better sight lines for all fans and parents. This will also allow us the ability to restrict the floor area with the proper security personnel so that only on deck participants and coaches will be on the floor during the event, thus increasing visibility for fans and parents to watch matches from the elevated seating area.
2. We have added an additional day to the event to ensure an earlier completion time each night.
3. Registration for this year's event will be in a larger area and broken down into 2 different times and days. 1-8 graders will register and weigh-in on Thursday evening, and 9-12 graders will register and weigh-in Friday evening.
4. All Participants will be required to register and weigh-in in their completion singlet, to ensure a more professional and safe environment for everyone.
5. Registration and weigh-ins will occur simultaneously, thus we will only have 1 line and several areas for registration, cutting down on the wait time.
6. All medical waiver releases and insurance forms have been added to online registration for this year's event, hence there will be no need to carry them to registration the day of the event, which should streamline registration.
7. There will be NO SEEDING for this year's event, although our tournament software program will separate past Brute-adidas National place winners till later rounds.
8. Due to popular demand, we have added FREE additional Technique Clinics and Seminars for Parents, Coaches, athletes and fans. These events will take place on both Friday and Saturday from 1-5pm in the afternoon.
9. We have changed registration for 9-12 graders to Friday evening which will allow additional states the ability to attend and participate in this year's event.
10.  2X - NCAA Champion and OUTSTANDING WRESTLING, BEN ASKREN of Missouri will be on hand for the FREE clinics and autograph sessions.
11. All participants will receive a free poster during registration for the autograph session.
12. We have downsized the number of weight classes for this year's event which will ensure more wrestlers per weight class and streamline the awards presentation.
13. All Championship and All-American rounds for all Grade 1-12 will occur on Sunday and we have planned a bigger and better parade of All-Americans and video.
14. All Matches for each grade division will be pre-assigned to a mat so wrestlers will know where and when they will be competing.

In addition to all the above improvements, we will stiff offer the follow which makes the Brute-adidas Nationals a favorite for all:

1. Custom Brute-adidas Nationals singlet's for all finalist in each weight in each grade division
2. Championship shirts for Coaches of finalist
3. Adidas watch for all champions
4. All-American certificates for the top 8 place finishers in each weight class in each grade.
5.      FREE Athlete autograph sessions, seminars and clinics for all attendees by world class coaches and athletes.

Additional changes to be noted:

1. Early registration for $45.00 for participants will be in effect prior to March 1st, 2008. After that date registration will be $65.00.
2. The downtown KC Marriott is the tournament headquarters (across the street from Municipal Auditorium) and will have discounted rooms available in our block till March 1st, 2008, after this date regular room rates will apply if available.  Please note that there is also a National Volleyball tournament the same weekend in the convention center, so hotels will be at a premium, please book your reservations early.
3. Similar to last year, if you stay at one of our partner hotels, you will receive one (1) reduced rate coupon for a $20.00 adult all-session admission at hotel check-in. You will need to bring that coupon to the ticket window at Municipal auditorium to receive your discounted adult admission.
4. Late Registration ($65.00) will be in effect from March 1st through March 28th at 11:59 pm. There will be no registration permitted after March 28th. We want to be sure to have enough time to have all matches and pairings assigned prior to the event.

For more information on the Brute-adidas Nationals or to register, please log onto www.bruteadidasnationals.com

For your convenience I have also attached a 2008 Brute-adidas Nationals brochure for your review.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you all in downtown Kansas City in March!

Manheim, Pa The National Wrestling Coaches Association has released the draws for four of the seven collegiate dual meet championships to be held Jan. 14-15 at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa at the 2006 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals presented by PayDay PRO.

The top seed in the Division I tournament is defending National Duals champion Oklahoma State. The Cowboys, who are going for their 34th NCAA Division I tournament title, will face Kent State in the opening round. Second-ranked and second-seeded Minnesota faces CAA champion Hofstra.

Third-seeded Oklahoma will face Cornell and fourth-seeded Michigan faces Northern Illinois.

Iowa is the fifth-seed and will face Nebraska from the Big 12, while host Northern Iowa will face sixth-seeded Central Michigan from the Mid-American Conference. Seventh-seeded Iowa State takes on Northwestern.

Traditional powers Wartburg, Wisconsin-La Crosse and Augsburg are the top seeds in the Division III tournament. Last year, Augsburg beat Wartburg in the final. Wartburg is ranked #1 in Division III after a dominating effort on an East Coast swing last weekend and are 14-0 coming in.

Fourth-seeded Luther College of Iowa is ranked 5th and seeded fourth.

In the 16-team NAIA tournament, top-seeded Lindenwood is the favorite and will face Campbellsville, a second-year program from Campbellsville, Ky. Dickinson State (N.D.), Dana College (Neb.) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University round out the top four seeds.

The Junior College tournament expands to an eight-team bracket and Northwest Wyoming and Labette (Kansas) Community College are the top two seeds.

Full tournament coverage can be found on the National Wrestling Coaching Association's media website, <http://www.intermatwrestle.com/>www.intermatwrestle.com throughout the course of the event.

December 29-30 - Greensboro Coliseum's Special Events Center (Wrestling
begins at 10 am on Thursday, 9 am on Friday. Championship matches are
slated for 6:30 pm on Friday. Schedule also includes 10 high school dual
meets on Friday beginning at 3 pm). There is also a free clinic for all
high school, middle school and youth wrestlers and coaches at 7:30 pm
Thursday, sponsored by The Body Bar.

Realtime results will be available on-line through SouthernScuffle.com and
UNCGSpartans.com.

NOTES: 31 teams and more than 500 wrestlers will compete over two days at
the Southern Scuffle. Because of the tournament's expansion this season,
the tournament was moved to the Greensboro Coliseum's Special Events
Center. The previous two tournaments, held at Fleming Gym, featured 23
teams. At the Special Events Center, up to 10 mats will be used at one time
up through the championship round on Friday night, something that was not
possible before the move... According the the NWCA rankings that are used
towards NCAA seeding, of the 54 ranked wrestlers that are expected to
appear at the Southern Scuffle, nine are in the Top 5 of their respective
weight classes including Ben Askren of Missouri, the top-ranked wrestler at
174 lbs. He was also the 2003 Southern Scuffle champ at 174. The tournament
also features Minnesota's Cole Konrad at 285 lbs., who was the NCAA
runner-up last year and currently sits ranked second in his respective
weight class. In addition, Lehigh's Troy Letters is ranked No. 3 at 165
lbs. Letters was the national champion at 165 in 2004 and the runner-up in
2003. Last year, Letters finished third at the national championship
meet... The 133 lbs. weight class may be the most highly competitive
division of the tournament as four of the Top 10 ranked wrestlers are
expected to compete in the tournament. Overall, six of the Top 20 wrestlers
at 133 are slated to compete at the Scuffle... At 141, seven of the Top 20
in both divisions are scheduled to participate in the event... Overall, 19
of the 54 ranked wrestlers are currently ranked in the Top 10 of their
respective weight classes... UNC Greensboro will have four wrestlers who
are currently nationally ranked in their respective weight classes. Joe
Kemmerer, ranked No. 8 at 125 lbs.; Tyler Shovlin, ranked No. 11 at 285
lbs.; Daren Burns, ranked No. 15 at 197 lbs.; and Kevin Artis, ranked No.
18 at 141 lbs., will wrestle for the Spartans...
